Baby Showers Anyone except the expectant couple can throw a baby shower. Any relative, close friend, or close co-worker should feel perfectly okay about planning a baby shower. Most baby showers are held before the baby is born, later on in the pregnancy.

list. This simply helps to avoid leaving out some important people or inviting someone that they would prefer not to include. Co-ed baby showers are becoming increasingly common, so you may want to consider inviting the men along.

It is common courtesy to speak with the expecting parents first before setting a date for the shower. This ensures that the guests of honour will be available, as well as any other friends, relatives that they would want to be there. And remember… no long weekends!

Plan to send invitations out early enough to give the guests at least a few weeks’ notice: This allows them enough time to work the shower into their schedules and shop for the perfect gift. If you’re the guest of honour, sending out thank you cards or even a small gift or token to the guests of the shower is always a nice gesture and is likely to be wellreceived amongst the guests.

It is also acceptable to have the shower after the baby is born. This works out well as guests can then tailor their gifts to the gender of the baby, and of course, everyone is delighted to see the baby faceto-face! Who to invite? Again, it is always a good idea to consult the guest of honour before finalizing the 6

Tip: have your guests all fill out an envelope with address to help lessen the load when you’re ready to send out your thank you cards. Source: theCMR.com - Provided by Michelle Colbron Heritage Education Fund Representative

Babyshower GAME

Do you know your Baby Food? Purchase a selection of baby food jars. Include meat, vegetable, fruit and mixed varieties for extra fun. Cover the labels on the jars with a piece of opaque paper. Write numbers on the jars so you can identify them. When you're ready to begin the game, give each guest a sheet of paper and a pencil, then open the jars. Guests will examine each jar of food by smelling the food, or even tasting if they like. Then they are to guess what type of food is in the jar. The guest with the most correct guesses, wins. Many women experience nausea and vomiting during their pregnancy. That’s because of the changes in your hormones. Certain smells and movements can make the nausea worse. The good news is that the nausea usually disappears after the first trimester. • Brain, liver, kidneys, bloodstream, and digestive system are developing

• Fetus weighs about 1.1 kg (2.5 pounds) and is approximately 37 cm (15 inches) in length Swelling. Many women notice some swelling in their feet and ankles in the third trimester. Pregnant women naturally retain more water in their bodies, so this is perfectly normal. To reduce swelling, put your feet up, avoid crossing your legs, wear loose clothing and get plenty of rest and exercise.

• Fetus weighs about 2.2 kg (5 pounds) and is 40 to 45 cm (16 to 18 inches) long Heartburn. Heartburn is caused by the pressure of the growing baby and hormone changes during pregnancy that allow stomach acid to move up to your throat. Some women take an antacid medicine to help with heartburn. An antacid reduces the amount of acid in your stomach. Not all antacids are safe for pregnant women. Check with your doctor or health care provider before you take one. • • • •

Preparing for the hospital Don’t leave it until the last minute to pack your hospital baby bag! If you go into labour early the last thing you’re going to want to do is to scrabble around to get everything together that you need to take with you to hospital. Once your baby is born, most first time mums stay in hospital for at least one night, but you might be home with baby in your arms on the same day, or you may even have to stay several days. You can pack a second bag to leave at home. Fill it with spares of everything, so that if you run out your birthing partner can easily find what you need and bring it along to hospital for you.

Umbilical Cord Blood Banking

By Kayvan Vakili, Marketing Manager Progenics Cord Blood Cryobank

Why save umbilical cord blood? Banking your baby’s cord blood is a once-in a-lifetime opportunity that could save the life of your baby or other family members. Cord blood contains stem cells, which are immature cells that can divide and renew with an unlimited capacity. Hematopoietic (blood-forming) Stem Cells (HSCs), a major type of stem cell normally found in bone marrow, are also present in high concentrations in umbilical cord blood. HSCs replicate continuously and some of them differentiate and mature into all the components of the blood and immune system. Every day, HSCs produce billions of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets that are essential for our health. Thus far, cord blood stem cells have been used to treat over 70 malignant and non-malignant life-threatening diseases, and have saved the lives of over 20,000 patients. Furthermore, with 14

advances in research, cord blood may be used to treat more diseases in the future, especially in regenerative medicine to repair damaged tissues and organs for treatment of diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, spinal cord injury and more. Clinical trials in regenerative medicine using cord blood are already underway and the results are promising. Choosing the best cord blood bank When choosing a cord blood bank, there are a number of factors to consider. First, make sure the bank is AABB accredited, which means that American Association of Blood Banks has inspected the cord blood bank and confirmed that it is in compliance with AABB Standards. Furthermore, cord blood banks in Canada must be registered with Health Canada. Since most major banks are AABB accredited and registered with both Health Canada and the FDA, there are other factors to consider that differentiate the quality of various banks. Most important is the yield of total

Kingston’s Baby bump & beyond expo 2013

nucleated cells that the bank can achieve from processing. Simply put, the yield is the percentage of total nucleated cells that the bank can extract and store from the cord blood. This is very important because the more cells that are stored, the higher the chance of a successful transplant should you need your sample. Second, the hematocrit (or percentage of red blood cells in your sample) should be the lowest possible after processing, since a high concentration of red blood cells can damage cord blood stem cells during cryopreservation (freezing). Finally, the viability of the cells must be considered. The more time that passes between collection of the blood and processing, the greater the number of cells that will die, therefore, the shorter the time frame between collection and processing, the better. Always ask the cord blood bank what their results are. If they downplay the importance of these factors or will not tell you, then you might want to consider other options. The best way to ensure you

have made the right choice is to do your own research and find unbiased sources of information that can tell you what is truly important when banking your baby’s cord blood.

Eliminate sleepless nights for baby with a bedtime routine (NC) One of the most pressing issues for new parents is sleep – or lack thereof. Babies thrive on routines, especially when it comes to bedtime. While you will never completely control the way your child snoozes, a regular schedule is an invaluable step in the right direction. A better night’s sleep can start with the bathtub. End the Day with a Bath By making bath time the last thing you do before tucking your little one in, you end the day with a soothing, memorable experience. Baths not only wash away the day’s mess and provide a bonding opportunity, but they can also make it easier for your baby to drift off. Infused with a gentle blend of lavender 18

and chamomile, which are known for their relaxing and soothing properties, Johnson’s Baby Bedtime products form a routine that’s clinically proven to help babies and toddlers fall asleep faster. So treat your baby to a warm routine by starting with a bath, a gentle massage with baby lotion, and a few minutes of quiet time, and help your baby drift off to a better night’s sleep. Be Consistent This seems simple, yet bears repeating nonetheless: be consistent. A bedtime routine means just that – it truly becomes a routine when it happens every night, not occasionally. By going through similar steps – in this case, ensuring baby’s bedtime routine always

Kingston’s Baby bump & beyond expo 2013

starts with a bath – your child’s internal clock will eventually expect to sleep at the same time each evening. Your Routine is Portable Throughout the fall and winter, holidays are great opportunities for your friends and extended family to spend time with your baby. Naturally, this often means traveling and spending nights away from home, which can considerably alter your schedule. While you might not be able to recreate every aspect of your daily routine, by simply using the same bath time routine and products, your baby will sense that it’s time to call it a night (which means you’ll get a better sleep too).

Newborn in the fall? Three tips for a stress-free season

(NC) Fall is a busy time of year for any family, between back-to-school, extracurricular activities, and one holiday after another. Add a newborn to the mix, and it can seem unmanageable. Cindy Zizek, registered nurse, mom of two and Playtex spokesperson provides three tips for making day-to-day life more manageable, enabling busy parents to reduce their stress and focus instead on memorable moments with their families: • Identify the usual time-wasting suspects in your life, and make a change. As Zizek explains: “From negative relationships that bring you down to worrying about things that are out of your control, identifying unnecessary stressors and r emoving them from your life will provide you with peace of mind and let you gain back some precious moments every day.” • Reserve some daily “me time.” Whether it's five minutes or a half-hour, scheduling some moments of peace 20

into your otherwise hectic day can give you just the boost you need to carry on. “Refuel your batteries,” Zizek says. “When you feel drained, you have little to give to your family or to yourself. Wake up extra early for some alone time, go for a walk or sneak in a chapter of a novel while baby naps. Whatever you do, choose something you love.” • Asking for help benefits everyone. “Contrary to what many parents fear, asking for help isn't a sign of weakness,” says Zizek. “In fact, it shows that you identify what your family needs and brings you one step closer to achieving it.” If someone asks if they can do something for you, take them up on it. “No matter how small the task, having that item removed from your already lengthy to-do list is a good thing,” says Zizek. “Look to other channels for stress reduction. Online parenting resources like Playtex Mommyville (www. mommyville.ca) provide a community of support from parents going through the same experiences you are.”

Teething Symptoms & Soothing Tips

Is your baby drooling more than usual? He or she might be teething. Cutting a tooth is an uncomfortable and sometimes painful experience for babies and toddlers and it can be heartbreaking to watch as a parent. Whether your little one already has a few pearly whites or is about to have one pop up for the first time, we have some helpful teething information and tips to help make this latest developmental milestone a smooth one. When Does Teething Begin? It’s that first gummy smile that melts a parent’s heart! But it’s not long until the gummy smile turns into a toothy grin. Teeth typically begin to emerge as early as three months and as late as a year, but most often between five and seven months. The first to appear are often the top and bottom, central incisors 22

(middle teeth) followed by side incisors, first molars, which break through between 10 to 14 months and canines which appear at 15 to 18 months. Remaining molars appear between 24 to 30 months. Typical Teething Symptoms • Drooling - Excessive drooling is often a leading indicator your baby’s teething. Along with drooling can come other symptoms including a rash on the chin, coughing and loose bowel movements due to swallowing excess saliva. • Biting - Your little one might start chewing on anything in her sight. Teething babies often do this to help alleviate the pressure from the tooth or teeth trying to break through the gums. • Fussing- As a result of feeling uncomfortable, she may be irritable

Kingston’s Baby bump & beyond expo 2013

and more fussy than usual. • Rubbing Ears - Pain from the gums can often travel to the cheeks and ears, leading babies to rub and pull. • Low-Grade Fever - It’s common for teething babies to experience a low fever. If your baby has a high fever or is less than three months with a temperature, take her to the doctor. Soothe Teething Pain • Anything Cold - Cool compresses can be a wonderful pain relief. Some cool teething relief items include: frozen teething rings, frozen wet washcloths, and frozen bananas. • Massage - Ease discomfort by pressing your (clean) fingers on your baby’s gums and massaging them for him or her. • Wash - Help alleviate the symptoms of rash by wiping away excess drool with a warm, clean cloth and applying diaper rash ointment or

petroleum jelly to affected areas when necessary. • Teething Gel - Consider using a teething gel if your baby’s discomfort isn’t letting up. Because this is a numbing agent, be sure to apply only a small amount to the affected gum area only to avoid baby’s lips and tongue from becoming numb. • Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen - Both are effective pain relievers. If you have any questions about doses or brand, please speak with your paediatrician. While this is a difficult stage, the good news is that teething doesn’t last forever. By understanding the symptoms and following some soothing tips, your little one will be back to herself in no time with some extra teeth to add to his or her smile. Kids in the Kitchen

The kitchen offers an excellent place for you to teach your children cooking and baking techniques, healthy food choices, and bond. When it comes to kitchen safety, teach them to: • Use oven mitts. • Wash hands before preparing meals. • Ensure pan handles face in while on stove top. • Never leave cooking food unattended. • Wash hands and tie hair back before handling any food. • Always wash hands after handling raw meat or poultry (which can cause salmonella poisoning.) • Immediately wash any dish or utensil that comes into contact with raw meat or poultry. • Never place metal in the microwave. • Clean spills as soon as they happen. Doing so will help prevent falls. • Use equipment and appliances properly (this includes knives, food processor, blender, oven, etc.) Once kitchen safety has been discussed, it’s time to get your kids involved with baking their favourite treat or cooking the next family meal. 26

Age Appropriate Tasks Very young children (under four years), can help with such simple tasks as: • Stirring ingredients with a wooden spatula or spoon. • Handing you ingredients as you need them. • Holding down the button to the blender or food processor. • Holding your hand as you whisk or stir. • Also consider purchasing play utensils to help them feel like a full part of the cooking process. Preschool aged kids can be more involved by: • Cleaning fruits and vegetables. • Whisking ingredients together. • Cracking an egg. • Cutting soft food such as cheeses and fruits with a butter knife. • As they are learning to read, you should also allow them to practice by reading out the ingredients and directions in the recipe book. Older children can handle more responsibility. If you are comfortable and after discuss-

ing knife safety, you can teach them how to use knives to cut ingredients. They can also: • Peel potatoes. • Mix ingredients with a hand held beater. • Count and measure (this is an excellent way to teach them conversion and measuring by weight). Clean Up Once the meal is prepared, it’s time to clean up! Cleaning up is an important habit, teaching your kids responsibility and independence. • Very young children can wipe counters with a towel and sort clean utensils.

• Preschoolers can fill the sink or dishwasher with soap, sweep the floor with a broom and wipe down counters using nontoxic cleansers. • Older children can wash the dishes or put dishes into the dish washer. They can then put dishes away once clean. Teaching your kids how to be little cooks does take patience. But by getting kids involved in the kitchen, you are helping them develop important life skills and develop a positive relationship with food. Five tips to foster the love of reading this fall (NC) Reading is a gift – it takes you on a journey, opens your eyes, raises questions and exposes you to new thoughts and ideas. With the following five tips, you can make sure your child will read more and have fun while doing it: 1. Designate Reading Time Setting daily reading time with your child is an effective way to motivate him or her to read more. Whether it is during breakfast, after school or before bedtime, a set time of day infuses routine and stability, giving your child something to look forward to. 2. Learn a New Word a Day Pick out a word in an encyclopedia, or have your child flip to a random page and select a word with his or her finger, then study it and learn the spelling and meaning behind the word. If you would like to go even further, you can encourage your child to use that word in a sentence the following day to help with memory retention. 3. Learn Through Listening Audio books, learning songs and trivia challenges help build comprehension skills and vocabulary. For a tool to help the learning to read and write process, the LeapReader (by LeapFrog) has a library with over 150 stories, work and audio books, along with a wide range of 28

activities that are sure to stimulate their minds and help foster enhanced reading and writing skills. 4. Keep a Journal A journal is a great way to bolster your child’s creativity and enhance reading and writing skills. To add another layer of learning, encourage kids to use some of the new words they have been learning to further enhance their vocabulary. A short daily journal entry will help keep their skills sharp. 5. Start a Book Club Organize a book club amongst your children’s friends. Host a get-together once a month, where they can discuss the latest book they are reading. Make it fun by serving some snacks and drinks (you can even theme them around the story). These tips will help ensure reading is an enjoyable experience that you and your child will relish. By making reading fun, you will ensure that your child enhances his or her skills and it will be a memorable experience that you can share together for years to come.

Flu Season...

It’s Baaaack!

The winter months have a tendency to bring us together. And all of that togetherness often leads to the unintentional spread of a variety of illnesses, including influenza. A communicable respiratory disease that produces such symptoms as headache, sore throat, cough, fever and muscle aches, influenza (also known as the “flu”), tends to be most active between the months of November and April, when we spend the majority of our time indoors. This highly contagious illness can land you in bed for several days and lead to serious complications which could result in hospitalization or even death. It’s therefore important to take the necessary steps to both avoid it and spread it. Here are some tips to keep yourself, your family and those around you healthy this season: Get the Flu Shot The flu shot offers the best protection against influenza. Getting vaccinated helps to prevent infection and reduce the severity of the illness. Because the virus tends to change from year to year, the 30

Government of Canada updates its vaccines annually. It’s therefore important to get “the shot” every autumn in order to allow your body to produce the antibodies that will protect you from the various strains that may affect your system. Who should get immunized? Everyone six months of age and older should get a flu vaccine. It is especially important for individuals who are at a higher risk of developing the flu to get vaccinated every year. These people include: • Pregnant women • Kids younger than two but older than six months (babies younger than six months are too young for the vaccine) • People 50 years of age and older • People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions • People who live in or work in nursing homes, long-term care facilities or hospitals • Parents of babies less than six months of age For additional information about Canada’s flu vaccine program, including information on who should or shouldn’t receive the flu shot, please visit the Health Canada website.

Wash Your Hands Because the flu can be passed on to others through objects that were touched by infected people, it’s important to wash your hands frequently. Kids have a tendency to touch their eyes, nose and mouth which is how the virus enters the system. Teach them to wash their hands properly and consider bringing hand sanitizer whenever you leave the house. Get Enough Sleep Lack of sleep can weaken the immune system. It’s therefore important to get enough. Put the kids to bed at the same time each night and, six hours before you go to bed, avoid consuming caffeinated or alcoholic beverages. Eat Healthy A proper healthy diet can boost the immune system. Vitamins play a big role in preventing such illnesses as colds and the flu. Stay away from processed foods and stock up on fresh vegetables, fruit and 100% fruit juice.

Flu Season Etiquette Because the flu is easily spread through such bodily fluids as mucous and saliva, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and respect other people. Some “flu etiquette” rules to follow include: • Coughing into your elbow – Teach your kids to cough into their elbow rather than their hands. • Frequent hand washing – Teach your kids how to properly wash their hands and be a good role model by washing your own hands frequently. • Staying away from daycare or playdates – If your child has a fever of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit or higher or a runny nose that is “green and hard to clean”, it’s best to keep her away from other kids until the illness has passed. With flu season upon us, it’s important to take steps to protect yourself, your family and the people around you from this contagious seasonal illness. PLANTING THE S.E.E.D FOR A SUCCESSFUL TOMORROW

Education in Haiti is a privilege not a right. Only those families that can afford elementary education get to go to school, and even that is a struggle for most. Therefore 70% of the population is left uneducated and unemployed. At SEED we are making life changes for children and adults one step at a time, with your support. Education in Haiti costs as little as $300 USD per year (that’s .82 cents a day).
