Corcoran excited about roll as new artistic director at Thousand Islands Playhouse continuing to celebrate our cultural heritage with Canadian work and classics like the upcoming Salt-Water Moon. Diversity is strength, as you will see in our new season. We are presenting five Canadian and three international plays, including musicals, hilarious comedies, love stories and a family drama.”
Written by Ashlie Corcoran, Artistic Director Thousand Islands Playhouse, Gananoque
For the first time since the Thousand Islands Playhouse was founded in 1982, a new artistic director has taken the reins. Ashlie Corcoran is one of the youngest, and select few female artistic directors of a regional theatre in all of Canada, and is the new driving force behind the Thousand Islands Playhouse’s play selection, creative team selection, casting, and artistic vision. “While there is more and more gender equality in theatre, the role of the artistic director tends to still held by men,” says Corcoran. “I can see that there is starting to be a sea change with regards to this, and I am thrilled that the Playhouse board could see beyond the traditional choice (of an older male) for their new artistic director.” “I think that what has been done here in the past 30 years is wonderful and needs to be celebrated. I want to build on this foundation by continuing to attract the best artists possible to our stages, and by

Originally from White Rock, British Columbia, Corcoran comes to the Playhouse with a strong background directing both theatre and opera. She began her training at Queen’s University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree in drama. She received a Master’s Degree in directing, awarded with distinction, from Goldsmiths College at the University of London. These studies were funded by a prestigious Chevening Scholarship. Corcoran has directed across North America, for such companies as the award-winning independent companyTheatre Smash (which she co-founded), the Canadian Opera Company, the Shaw Festival, the Royal Conservatory of Music, Western Canada Theatre, Resurgence Theatre and

Dogs sound the alarm of imminent seizures in children Written by Rob Mooy, Frose Creative Solutions Inc. For centuries dogs have been man’s best friend. Working and playing alongside their human companions. These days it’s not an uncommon sight to see our four-legged friends working with the military, law enforcement, herding sheep or cattle, or showing the way for people who have limited sight. Most everyone has seen these seeing-eye dogs at one time or another. But, for one local woman the need for another type of service dog came about with the birth of her second child. Samantha Knapp is a mother of six children, two with special needs. As a parent with special needs children, she discovered early that she needed help.
10
Checking into getting a service dog for her daughter she found the wait list was several years long. “I got into dog training 16 years ago when my daughter was born with severe seizures, ” she explains.“ I had learned about what a dog could do for families with special needs children but sadly, the wait list to get a (service) dog was very long.” So taking matters into her own hands the Kingston native went back to school for some extensive training through an animal behaviour college, as well as extensive training in the human disorders she would be working with. “I trained my first service dog (River) 10 years ago. She (River) is still working today and is trained for seizure alert/response and autism.” Knapp explains she taught the yellow lab

how to respond to seizures and tell if her daughter was having one. After about six months of training the puppy started anticipating the seizures and learned how to alert, before the seizure ever happened.
urge to be there for these parents. I didn’t have a mentor when I was going through the stress of having a child with life-threatening issues. It can be very lonely. This is what we do, to help families.”
“I truly believe she was able to learn this because she came to us as a puppy and learned with real seizures, not pretend seizures that are sometimes used to train dogs,” she says. “The body gives off a pheromone before a seizure hits and River, as well as two other service dogs I am training, is able to detect it. The seizures are more controlled in both of my children now because we can give an oral medication when the dog senses a seizure is coming and that will either prevent or lessen the seizure strength/length.” Wanting to help other families with similar circumstances she joined forces with Elizabeth Bailey to open Kingston 4 Paws Academy.
The training of these dogs is a long process. “It would take an entire book to fully explain,” she says. “Basically we tune into the dog’s natural abilities and reward what is helpful. For example, when a dog is first learning how to sense seizures they will sniff the patient. This gives us a great opportunity to reward the dog. The dog learns to anticipate the seizure and gets excited because they always get a really wonderful treat for telling us.” Knapp’s first dog River is so adapt at this that she can warn of an upcoming seizure as early as 12 hours before, depending on the type of seizure. Labradors are usually best suited for this type of work. They generally chose
Bailey herself has been in the dog training field for over 12 years, training multiple dogs for special needs families. She has also worked as a volunteer puppy raiser for other service dog agencies. “Our business will hopefully shorten the wait list for families,” adds Knapp. “I train both service dogs and companion dogs. It’s a very rewarding job. I train service dogs for autism, seizure work, mobility issues and PTSD.” It’s amazing how the hand life deals you, sometimes leads to something very rewarding. For Knapp it was taking a family medical issue and turning it into this new endeavour with the hopes of helping others. There is no longer a need for a parent with a special needs child to have to do everything all on their own. “I wanted to bring the first south eastern service dog school here because the increase of children with autism is rising, more people are scared for their children’s safety (due to the autism) and many children with autism also have seizures,” she adds. “I have a strong

Continued from page 11 puppies under six months of age. “Proper socialization of the pups is very important so we start at a very young age,” explains Knapp.“We want to expose them to as much as we can before they are a year old.” How do children in need qualify to get a service dog? “Families just need to apply for a service dog through Kingston 4 Paws, have proof of a medical issue that requires the help of a dog, and a supportive family willing to learn,” she adds. “The dogs are very expensive to purchase and train and it’s hard to put a dollar amount on a child’s health. I can’t give an exact dollar amount because it totally depends on what the dog is being trained for.” Knapp is quick to add that the family is not always expected to foot the entire cost of a service dog. “The families are not alone with the cost of the dog; we help them with fundraising and provide ideas of how they can afford one of our service dogs.” Dogs are chosen for families by first seeing how the child bonds with the dog. Some
12
children bond better with certain coloured dogs. Others prefer a quiet dog who likes to be a reading buddy, while others enjoy one who will play endless games of fetch. There have been many special moments for the two women, but Knapp says the biggest and best one for her as a mother is that alert she gets from her dogs when her child isn’t safe. When you see a Kingston 4 Paws dog, or any service dog, in public please do not pet or distract the dog. This animal is working and Knapp suggests asking the handler first before approaching the dog. Kingston 4 Paws Academy opened in February of this year and has started taking names for a spring puppy waitinglist. Anyone interested in becoming involved in this exciting project can call 613-766-4441, or check out their website www.4pawsacademy.ca or find them on Facebook at https://www. facebook.com/pages/Kingston-4-PawsAcademy/301177326649362.

Chiropractic care helps lesson symptoms of pregnancy and post partum Written by Dr. Jeremie Tremblay Frontenac Chiropractic and Sports Rehab
Pregnancy and post partum affects all women to a different degree. Morning sickness, vomiting, nausea, back pain, pelvic pain, shortness of breath, and rib pain are all symptoms that women can experience. These symptoms are seen as normal during pregnancy, but the intensity can be diminished with chiropractic care. The nervous system controls our whole body. The presence of spinal joint irritation is often associated with weight gain or faulty postures as a result of pregnancy. The nerves exiting your spine all lead to various parts of your body, including muscles, organs, glands, and blood vessels. Left alone, and over time, this nerve stress will negatively impact these various body systems. For example, spinal compensations resulting from the nerve irritation may result in distorted pelvic positioning, causing the baby to get into an unfavourable position for birth, or simply give women back pain.
In situation like this, Dr. Tremblay assesses the spine, muscle imbalances and postures, to implement a proper rehabilitation treatment plan. Pain is your body’s way of telling you there is something wrong. Don’t mask the pain, resolve the issue.

Become a more positive person Submitted article
Learned optimism can be beneficial, helping to minimize feelings of depression, reduce stress levels and possibly improve physical health. Optimists are better equipped to handle stress and manage incidents that would incite anxiety. Although there are plenty of people who seem to be eternally optimistic, optimism is not an inherited trait. Changing perceptions and teaching oneself to be more optimistic is possible. Being an optimist doesn’t mean turning a blind eye to problems or expecting everything to be easy. Being optimistic means learning from situations and recognizing that obstacles are there for a purpose. Men and women hoping to become more optimistic can employ the following strategies. Stop and embrace a positive event Take time to mull over something good that has happened and take credit for

your involvement. Mentally categorize this feeling for later when you need an example of the way optimism makes you feel. Surround yourself with optimists. Hang out with people who have a sunny view on life rather than those who bring you down or commiserate. Learning from example can help you develop more positive thinking patterns. Believe you can and will succeed When approaching something new, don’t set yourself up for failure. Go into it with the vision that you will thrive. Even if you don’t succeed as planned, you can use the opportunity as a learning experience and set a new plan to tackle. Erase negative phrases from your vocabulary. Using the terms “I can’t” or “It’s impossible” is a recipe for failure. Avoid complaints Complaining does little more than make the person complaining feel even worse and could bring down the people around

you. Because it won’t solve anything, there really is nothing productive about it. If you must get your feelings out, write them in a book and then tuck that book away. Take care of your body You certainly can’t be positive if you aren’t feeling 100 percent. A well-balanced diet, routine exercise, sufficient rest, and finding time to go outdoors and get some fresh air and sunshine can help keep a person on a positive path.
on the back every day. Realize that things don’t happen overnight. Becoming more optimistic will take time, but it can be done. Don’t be discouraged if it takes a little more time than you expected. Living longer and more productively comes partially from being an optimistic person and making the best of every situation.
Get involved Spending too much time isolated and alone can eventually degrade anyone’s feelings of well-being. Take the time to meet with people outside of your family and engage in different activities that take your mind off of stressors. People who are busy in a good way are more inclined to see the brighter side of life. Practice positive affirmations Tell yourself good things. Receiving praise is something that instantly can put a person in a good mood. Instead of waiting for praise from others, give yourself a pat

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month Written by Rochelle ten Haaf Awareness Coordinator Ontario Region Ovarian Cancer Canada
No screening test, significant misperceptions and limited funding are only some of the challenges of ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is the most fatal women’s cancer, yet is often overlooked and underdiagnosed. Symptoms are vague, so most women are diagnosed in late stages when 70 percent will not survive five years. Currently some 17,000 women in Canada are living with ovarian cancer and every five hours we lose someone to this disease. The most common symptoms include: bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, feeling full quickly or difficulty eating and urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency). If a woman experiences one or more of these symptoms, as new and for longer
18
than three weeks, Ovarian Cancer Canada urges her to ask a physician about these diagnostic tests: a pelvic exam, a transvaginal ultrasound and a CA-125 blood test (in combination with other diagnostic tests) Sunday, September 8, marked the 12th annual Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope in 45 communities across Canada (Sept. 22 in Kingston). “The Walk is the largest one-day national awareness event raising crucial funds for research, improved education and programs that support women living with this devastating disease,” says Elisabeth Baugh Ross, CEO of Ovarian Cancer Canada. Here are other ways to get involved with Ovarian Cancer Canada. This September, bring home sunflowers from any Longos, in Ontario, and support
Kingston’s Women’s expo 2013
the fight against ovarian cancer. For each sunflower bundle sold a $2 donation will be made to Ovarian Cancer Canada. The Expedition of Hope, on Sept 23, features a group of 20 ovarian cancer survivors, family members and friends affected by the disease, who will climb Mt Kilimanjaro to raise the Ovarian Cancer Canada flag at the summit, while raising funds for the fight against ovarian cancer. Canada website to learn more about the risks and then tell others. Host an Ovarian Cancer Knowledge is Power session, a free ovarian cancer awareness program delivered by volunteers to community groups, corporations, employees, religious denominations and health care providers. Ovarian Cancer Canada is the only national charity in Canada dedicated solely to overcoming ovarian cancer by supporting women and their families living with the disease, raising awareness and funding research to develop reliable early detection techniques, improved treatments and ultimately a cure.

Plank
Three Resistance Exercises Every Woman Should Be Doing By Andrea Myers, Personal Trainer Between sitting in front of a computer and TV, driving a car and texting on our phones, we spend a disproportionate amount of time doing things in front of us, often with slouched shoulders and hunched backs. As women, this is exacerbated by
the additional weight of our breasts pulling us forward. And regardless of bra size, we tend to avoid pushing out their chests and standing tall, and as a result, often develop a”gorilla-like” postureor the dreaded ‘old-lady hump’. These factors can lead us to have headaches, neck and shoulder tension and lower back pain. To help these areas here are three exercises that every woman should be doing to strengthen their body, improve there posture, stand taller and reduce and prevent neck, shoulder and lower back pain: 1. Row It’s amazing to think that the rowing motion could be the key to good posture, stronger abs, perkier breasts, a sexy back, and toned arms. The definition of rowing as an exercise is “to propel or convey in a manner resembling the rowing of a boat”.
Squat
20
From dumbbell rows to cable rows, this rowing motion occurs when you pull some form of resistance in toward your chest by retracting (drawing together) your shoulder blades. Rowing strengthens Kingston’s Women’s expo 2013
the muscles in your upper back, ads and biceps which helps roll your shoulders back, open your chest and make you look taller all while strengthening, toning and defining the muscles in your back and arms! 2. Squat Squats are an excellent calorie burner because they use the largest muscle groups in the body quadriceps (thigh muscles), hamstrings and the glutes (buttocks). Squats are exercises that consist of an up and down motion of the body that resembles the motion of getting out of a chair. In fact, I often suggest that a person new to trying to do squats can practice by slowly getting up and down from a chair. Then when they are ready they can stop using the chair and you’ll be doing effective squats. Some people with knee discomfort may be concerned about doing squats; they should check with their doctor or orthopaedist but some knee problems result from quadriceps or glute problems and
squats may very well help resolve them. 3. Plank Done properly, the plank engages the abdominal muscles as well as the muscles that support the spine. It’s called a ‘Plank’ because that is what you try to resemble a straight plank of wood. The goal is to mimic this straight piece of wood by supporting your body weight on your hands and feet, though you can modify as necessary. This is such a great exercise for women because it not only strengthens your abdominals, it also strengthens your back, shoulders, quadriceps and calf muscles. This is why it can be challenging to maintain good form. In addition, the plank and core exercises like them help with everyday activity, like bending to pick up a sock, carrying groceries or lifting an item off the shelf. And there you have it, three of the most important exercises for women to do for whole body strength, improved posture and pain prevention.

Your Skin is a Reflection of Your Overall Health Written by Maggie McLaren, Usana Health Science You wake up, look in the mirror and you have a “break-out.” You have that important meeting later and can’t go with a USE (unidentifiable skin eruption) front and centre on your face so you grab lotions, potions, cover-up and make-up. Hiding blemishes under makeup or special creams is like painting over rust. The damage underneath will continue to undermine the beauty on the surface. But, at this point, you’re not thinking that your skin is a reflection of your overall health, an early warning system that is letting you know something is going on inside your body. You are concerned about looking healthy, not being healthy. “Your skin is the fingerprint of what is going on inside your body, and all skin conditions, from psoriasis to acne to aging, are the manifestations of your body’s internal needs, including its nutritional needs,” says Dr. Georgiana Donadio, founder of the National Institute of Whole Health. The skin in the largest organ in the human body and has an important role to play protecting us from UV radiation, dehydration, bacterial invasions and injuries. It helps us to regulate our body temperature when it is hot or cold and helps our bodies to detoxify.

As the body overloads with toxins, many that are absorbed through the skin, the liver is unable to keep up and relies on the skin to help detoxify the body. Every skin blemish, break-out, or skin condition is caused by toxic overload. The very products that many skincare manufacturers claim ‘will help reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles’ and preserve our youth may be poisoning us. By their very nature, preservatives are designed to be cytotoxicwhich means they kill cells. Specifically they work to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi. Our skin is made up of cells and preservatives attack its integrity and when absorbed into the blood stream become a hazard to the rest of the body. Studies have shown that some preservatives in beauty products can accumulate in the body and alter sexual development in children. Formaldehyde, a solution used to preserve dead things, is used in many skin care products as a preservative. It is toxic to our cells, and isknown to cause cancer but is highly effective at killing microbes. Formaldehyde-release agents may be listed on the label as Quaternium 15, 2-bromo-2nitropropane-1,3-diol, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea or DMDM Hydanoin. Check your skin care products for these toxic chemicals—parabens (methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl), Mercury (thimeosal), Lead

ity essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals into your diet to properly nourish skin cells. Some of the important nutrients for nourishing skin are silica, zinc, omega3 fatty acids, Vitamin 3, Vitamin E, Vitamin A and selenium.
When selecting products to use on your skin, choose products that have no harmful chemicals and useself-preserving technology. A rule of thumb to remember is that if you wouldn’t eat it; don’t slather it on your skin. In addition to using skincare products that are good for you here are five other things you can do.
3. To make sure you’re getting all the nutrients your body needs, supplement your diet with nutritional supplements. To be certain that you can trust the supplements you buy are high quality, potent and absorbable, consult a copy of the book, A Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements, 5th Consumer Edition by Lyle MacWilliam. His research compares 1200 supplements on the market.
1. Hydrate your cells by drinking more water, preferably with a little dash of lemon juice. Start with a cup of warm water and lemon in the morning and drink a glass of water shortly before bed.
4. Consult with a Naturopathic Doctor, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, or other health practitioner if you suspect your skin problems may be related to a food allergy.
2. Add fruits, vegetables and foods that are organically grown and contain qual-

Feel the difference of a great hair day, every day (BPT) - Every day women are subjected to a multitude of harsh elements that strip the hair of its natural beauty, leaving it limp and lifeless. The right shampoo gives women a great hair day by unlocking a few useful secrets women need to know in order to beat bad hair days. Celebrity hair stylist, Mark Townsend, offers these three easy tips for women to feel the difference of beautifullooking hair every day. Tip No. 1 - The foundation for a great hair day starts in the shower Nearly half of women have a bad hair day when their hair feels weighed down. “The foundation to any great hair day starts when women choose a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that does not weigh hair down,” says Townsend, whose clients include many of today’s leading Hollywood stars. He recommends improved most daily moisture shampoo and conditioner, that does not weigh hair down with excess residue and delivers up to five times smoother hair, in just one wash. Tip No. 2 - Your blow dryer can be your hair’s best friend Healthy hair looks shiny because the hair cuticle lays smooth and is able to reflect

light. More than 80 percent of women feel more confident on a great hair day compared to a bad one, and one way to keep hair looking beautifully smooth is knowing how to properly use a blow dryer. When blow drying your hair, make sure that you angle the nozzle downward as you dry from the roots to the ends which helps keep cuticles flat and reduces damage. “Pointing the blow dryer directly onto hair with no angle can cause breakage and frizz,” says Townsend. He also warns against applying the hot air from a blow dryer on one area for too long; “it will dry out your hair, making it frizzier.” Tip No. 3 - An effortlessly beautiful hair style A smooth ponytail is a chic way to beat the weather. It will get your hair up and off your shoulders. One of Townsend’s biggest style secrets is perfecting a frizz-free ponytail. First, spray a reusable mascara wand with extra hold hairspray. Then, comb the wand gently over the hairline once the ponytail is set, especially in front of the ears, to smooth the little hairs into the style. “I also like to spray hairspray directly on my hands and run them over the hair that is already pulled back,” says Townsend. “This tip ensures pesky flyaways are smooth, leaving hair looking polished and beautiful.”

Starting your own business Five Steps to Succes
(BPT) - Recent figures show only a slight reduction in the unemployment rate, and job growth is at its lowest in six months. So, how can you make your business a success? 1. Self-assess and research Be honest with yourself. You need to know what you are good at and what you enjoy doing. A SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) is a great way to review your abilities . 2. Know your niche A business plan helps identify both industries with a need for your services and your competition. It will also help identify whether there might be a smaller and important niche market where your business can focus and be profitable. “If you’re a graphic designer, will you be a generalist, offering services to all types of industries, or do you have a specialization that you can build on?” Knowing your niche will enable you to develop a consistent brand identity in every aspect of your business. 3. To incorporate or not to incorporate Many are familiar with taking on freelance work, but it is important to formalize your business. It’s a good idea to invest in some legal and accounting advice to help you make the best decision about incorpora-
26
tion. Both business structures have significant advantages and disadvantages. 4. Develop a stream of business New business owners often envision being successful within a short period of time. Developing and building a business from the ground up takes time, energy and hard work. The research you did for your business plan will help you to have realistic expectations in regards to a rate of growth. 5. Network, network, network “No one can stress the importance of networking enough.” Networking may be your only means of marketing for quite some time - it is important to get in front of as many people as possible and give them your “elevator pitch” (a quick story about your business that you can say in 90 seconds or less). When meeting each person, make sure you take his or her business card; this comes in handy when following up on the contact or sending a “nice to meet you” note the next day. “Yes, try to write a quick note to each person you meet. In the note mention where you met, refer to your conversation, and remind them what your business does and how you can help them.” There are no shortcuts to success. So put in the time to reap the rewards.

Six Tips on buying a home that you should know before you begin 1. Interview a Real Estate Salesperson Choosing the right Real Estate Salesperson, for you, can make a huge difference in the entire purchasing process. Make sure you feel confident with the Salesperson you choose to work with. Although in most transactions of Purchase and Sales the Sellers pay the Real Estate Salesperson’s commission, the Buyer’s Agent is still working for YOU. Ask questions and take notes. 2. Book a no obligation appointment with a Mortgage Lender to confirm what amount of price range you qualify for in terms of a mortgage. The Mortgage Lender will often go the extra mile to assist you with organizing your budget and debt consolidation. Your Real Estate Salesperson can give you references of local Mortgage Agents. 3. Create a “Needs versus Wants” Checklist A written list of what you really want can help in narrowing down the location and specific qualities the home offers. 4. Re-Sale Value Keep in mind that you may want to consider selling your home at some point. Discuss the pros and cons of the home you are considering purchasing in terms of re-sale value with your Real Estate Agent. 5.Check out the Neighbourhood Visit the house during the day and evening hours. Take a walk around the neighbourhood and talk to the neighbours. 6. Try to have fun and keep an open mind
Sometimes a Buyer discovers more about what they really want in a home after they have viewed a number of homes that are FOR SALE, and land up purchasing a home that is much different than what they thought they wanted in the beginning. Juggling a family and a career The days when single income households were the norm are long gone. The current reality has left many women juggling the obligations of motherhood and career. Such juggling acts are seldom easy. Many mothers find themselves neglecting one obligation for the benefit of another. Here are a few tips to help make balancing work and family a little easier. Share responsibilities While the days of the single-income household may be a thing of the past, many women still feel responsible to cook family meals, clean up after the children and make it to all of their children’s sporting events or other school-related activities. Try to share these responsibilities so you can ensure you’re giving both career and family the attention each deserves. Devise a schedule where both parents tackle responsibilities equally. For example, if your spouse routinely cooks on Wednesday, then you know you don’t need to rush home on Wednesday night and you may be able to stay at the office a little later to work on a project or catch up on work. Sharing a schedule can considerably reduce the stress of juggling family alongside a career.
ful, and stress can have a very adverse effect on your health. Women with high stress levels are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and cardiovascular disease. Physically activity has a positive impact in many ways; while helping to alleviate stress it can also lower rates of anxiety and depression. It’s easy to become irritable when stressed, and no mother wants to be irritable in the presence of her children. Incorporating exercise into your daily routine is a great way to alleviate the stress of juggling a family and a career, and you can even incorporate your family into your exercise routine, going for nightly walks after dinner or playing with your children in the yard.

Get involved with your child’s school Many mothers find staying active with their children’s school is a great opportunity for them to bond with their kids and keep abreast of developments at their school. Such involvement can be minimal, such as attending a monthly luncheon with kids or agreeing to be a chaperone on one or two class trips per year. Such events are typically scheduled months in advance, so you should have ample time to arrange a break from the office without neglecting your professional responsibilities. Take advantage of work-from-home policies As technology has advanced, many companies have become much more lenient with regard to employees working from home. If your company allows you to work from home, even if it’s only once per week, then take advantage of that offer. This can provide more time with your kids and it will likely save you money on childcare. You will appreciate the opportunity to skip
your daily commute, even if it is only once a week or a couple of times per month. Plan ahead Looking ahead is another way to make managing family and career easier. Plan meals in advance to cut down on preparation time when it’s your night to cook. Try using a slow cooker, starting meal preparation in the morning or preparing part of the meal in advance so it’s ready to go in the oven the moment you arrive home. Another way to plan ahead is to look at kids’ school schedules and plan trips during the school year when school won’t be in session. A three-day weekend is a perfect opportunity to getaway to a nearby location the whole family with love, and where you can relax and reconnect without the pressures of daily life. Juggling a family and career is not always easy, but the joy of raising a happy family while balancing a successful career is well worth the long days and a few grey hairs.

Prevention is the best medicine for your eyes Written by Dr. Rebecca Chippior Your sight is a precious thing If you were to ask most people what sense they would not want to lose I believe sight would be near the top of the list. In our current technological world we can have procedures to regain function of a body part; your eyes are unique in that you have two of them to last you a lifetime. Your lifestyle choices are the best way that you can reduce your risk of sight-threatening eye conditions.
30
One of the biggest lifestyle modifications to make is to quit smoking. Most smokers are unaware that tobacco use can lead to blindness causing irreversible damage. Smoking at least doubles your risk of losing your sight to such eye conditions as macular degeneration. The good news is if you quit smoking your risk of eye disease decreases over time. Your nutrition plays a role in your general health but also your eye health. Eating a well-balanced diet is most beneficial.

Consider adding more leafy green vegetables, like spinach and kale, and eggs to your diet for example. These foods contain lutein, a photopigment that is found in our retinas. It is essential to consider your dietary intake of lutein as our bodies do not produce lutein naturally. Consider your overall health. Are you aware of your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, of high cholesterol? For example, diabetic retinopathy and macular edema are the leading causes of blindness in the working-age population. Early detection of retinopathy in individuals with diabetes is imperative in preventing vision loss. For this reason it is recommended to see an optometrist at least annually if you have diabetes. It is important to have regular eye examinations at any age to help reduce the risk of vision loss for yourself and your family. Infants should undergo their first eye examination around six months of age. Your
Dr. Rebecca Chippior child should at least have another examination by the age of three and should be seen annually until 19 years of age. Adults between ages 20-64 should have an eye examination at least every two years. Those over 65 should have their eyes checked annually. Make healthy choices for your body and your eyes will thank you for it too.
