Jody Pepple Head Coach 12th Season Jody Pepple begins her 12th season as head coach of the Frostburg State University women’s basketball program after serving as the team’s top assistant from 1995-2001. Pepple has guided the Bobcats to a 151-141 overall record in her previous 11 years and she is the second winningest coach in the program’s 48-year history. She led Frostburg State to the NCAA Tournament and AMCC Tournament Championship in 2005, along with ECAC Tournament berths in 2004 and 2006. Twenty-one players have earned all-conference honors under her guidance including the AMCC’s Player of the Year in both 2002-03 and 2004-05. Last season, Frostburg finished with a 5-20 overall record and 3-13 mark in the CAC. FSU posted wins over Pitt-Greensburg, Penn State Altoona, Hood, Wesley and Stevenson. In 2010-11, Pepple successfully led the Bobcats through their first year in the Capital Athletic Conference, annually one of the toughest leagues in NCAA Division III. Frostburg finished 10-16 overall and 9-7 in the conference. The Bobcats shook off a slow start to earn the fifth seed in the CAC Tournament behind nine wins in the final 12 games of the regular season. FSU finished the year second in the league in points per game (60.3), three-pointers (124) and assists per game (13.2). Pepple led the women’s team to their second best finish during her time at the helm of the program in 2009-10. The Bobcats finished 19-8 overall and 15-5 in AMCC, just behind her 2004-05 squad that finished 21-7 overall and 16-2 in the conference. FSU advanced to the AMCC Tournament semifinals, led the league in rebounding margin (+6.9) and finished fourth in the league in both scoring offense (67.7) and scoring defense (60.1). Seniors Brittany James and Caryn Wright both surpassed the 1,000-point barrier bringing the total to 10 players that have reached that plateau during Coach Pepple’s time as a coach at FSU. In 2008-09, FSU finished 16-10 overall and third place in the AMCC (13-5). The Bobcats led the league in rebounding margin (+5.7) and finished second in offensive rebounds (16.65), defensive rebounds (26.54) rebounding offense (43.2) and rebounding defense (37.5). In 2007-08, Pepple reached a milestone in her career as she eclipsed the 100-win plateau and became the second winngest coach in school history. Despite the team posting just a 9-16 overall record and a 6-12 AMCC mark, Pepple’s career mark stands at 101-87. After a slow start, the Bobcats turned it on late in the season and finished the year with four wins in their final five games. FSU advanced to the AMCC Tournament for the seventh-straight season and Elizabeth Carrington became the 16th player to be named to an All-AMCC team during Pepple’s tenure. In 2006-07, the Bobcats posted their fourth-straight winning season under sixth-year Head Coach Jody Pepple. Her squad was 17-9 overall and 12-6 in the AMCC and just

missed a spot in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament. FSU kicked off the season by starting 4-0 and winning both the Fifth Annual FSU/Jim Crawley Tournament and the Gallaudet Tournament. FSU finished the season strong with sevenstraight wins to clinch an AMCC Tournament opening round game at Bobcat Arena. In that contest, the fourth-seeded Bobcats fell to fifth-seeded Lake Erie on a game-winning basket with four seconds left on the clock. In 2005-06, the Bobcats finished 18-10 overall and 13-6 in the AMCC. Frostburg State earned a No. 3 seed in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament and advanced to the semifinals, losing to eventual runner-up Pitt Greensburg 66-62. For the second time in three years, FSU earned a berth into the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament, where they lost to Johns Hopkins in the opening round, 56-38. Frostburg State ranked second in the AMCC in steals per game (13.29) and turnover margin (3.25) and third in scoring offense (68.0 ppg), field goal percentages (41.8), blocked shots per game (3.11) and assists (14.89). In 2004-05, Pepple guided the Bobcats to a 21-7 overall finish, a 16-2 mark in the AMCC, both the AMCC regular-season and tournament titles and FSU’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 1996-97 campaign. The Bobcats defeated rivals Penn State Behrend (63-53) and Pitt-Greensburg (81-62) in the AMCC Tournament to earn the league’s first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. However, in the opening round, McDaniel downed FSU 71-65.

2012-2013 Season Preview

B O B C ATS

Armed with its top two scorers from a year ago, the Frostburg State University women’s basketball team enters the 2012-13 season prepared to compete in the Capital Athletic Conference. With a solid core of returning leadership and plenty of new faces under 12th year head coach Jody Pepple there is reason to be optimistic this season will indeed result in continued improvement. The Bobcats look to shake off a tough 2011-12 campaign with a brand new look and an up-tempo style of play. Pepple has five returners back this season, including her top two scorers in junior shooting guard Elaina Hummel and senior point guard Stephanie Straka. The Bobcats also are returning one more guard in sophomore Ronje’ James and two in the post with senior Brynn Arnone and sophomore Bobbi McDonald. Along with those five faces, Frostburg welcomes seven newcomers who will contribute to the new and improved philosophy of the women’s basketball team. We are going to change the tempo of the game,” said the Bobcats coach. “We want to push the ball and play a fast paced game. Since we don’t match up with big lineups we need to play smarter basketball and make teams run with us. We are going to have a lot of pressure in our full court and half court defense, which is different for us in past years; we want to press to force teams to make mistakes.” Guards As the only junior on the team and last year’s top scorer, the Bobcats will lean on Hummel for her offensive contribution especially from long range. Hummel will continue to be the Bobcats’ top offensive threat as she posted a 12.0 points per game average complete with 299 points and 40 three pointers last year. She will also look to be automatic from the line after her impressive 93.7 percentage last season. Straka will continue her role as floor general from the point guard position heading into her final year. “Steph is our playmaker; she’s good at feeding the ball as well as knowing when to slash to the basket for to make a play for herself.” Last year Straka led the team in three-point percentage (39%), field goal percentage (45%) and field goals made (110). Pepple commented “As the two top guards from last year, I am looking to Straka and Hummel to help guide the freshman into our system and play our style of basketball.” Sophomore James rounds out the returners from the guard positions. Pepple is excited about James’ development from having a year of experience under her belt. James averaged 7.1 points, 1.5 assists and 1.9 steals per game last year. “She has progressed at being more consistent, Pepple said, “Because she is taller than Elena and Steph we expect her to crash the boards and get rebounds as a vertical, athletic guard.” The Bobcats will be very guard heavy with the addition of four freshmen. Shalanda Haney and Kathryn Bickerstaff will battle to be the first wings off the bench. Haney was heavily recruited because of her defensive mindedness and ability. “She is a fast learner and she is very quick on her feet which will be very helpful when we press.” Offensively she fills a slasher role and will need to learn to score at the collegiate level. After coming off a solid freshman year playing field hockey, Bickerstaff is transitioning to basketball season. Bickerstaff has a solid shot and is a very physical guard. “Kate is very smart, she always knows where to be, and we look forward to getting her involved into the fast-paced tempo of the collegiate level.” Brionna Hall and Rebecca Oliva will finalize the guard positions. Hall and Olivia are both shooting guards. “Hall definitely has the green light to shoot the three.” Both guards have long ball capabilities to contribute to the scoring for the Bobcats. Forwards Leading the post players this year is senior Arnone. “Brynn came in and has had a great preseason; she is in shape and looks very strong.” Arnone is going to man the paint as the Bobcats look to run a 4-out offense this year due to being so deep at the guard positions. Arnone is a face-up post player and looks to have a good season after last year’s 3.2 rebounds per game average. She will also help out defensively after leading the team in blocked shots, averaging 1.2 a game last season.

MCDONALD Sophomore Bobbi McDonald is the final forward to return for the Bobcats. After a consistent season, McDonald looks to become more of an impact to the team this year. “Bobbi is very team-minded, she contributes to our team defense very well; you can always hear her talking and directing our defense which is a big help.” Freshman Courtney Young will see time at both forward positions. Young has a solid post-up ability but can also step out and hit a 12-15 foot jumper. Young plays a very physical and tough game that will allow her to have a presence in the paint to get rebounds. A true 5, Deara Parker looks to come off the bench to give the Bobcats another physical, low post player on the blocks to help grab some boards. Freshman Jodie Gaul will fill the role as a swing player due to her versatility to play a 3, 4 or 5 position. “She has soft hands and gives us another option to pull up and hit a jumper from 12-15 feet out.” Schedule The Bobcats face a very tough schedule this season and will play five teams that visited the NCAA Tournament last year including Juniata (26-3), Mary Washington (30-1), York (24-6) Lebanon Valley (26-4) and Wisconsin Eau-Claire (21-7). The Bobcats face Juniata and Mary Washington back to back very early in the season. “These games will be a good test for us to see where we are at; we are going to take it one game at a time no matter who we play.” CAC play will be equally competitive this year with Mary Washington and York coming off strong seasons last year. “We are just focusing to get better and eliminating turnovers, “Pepple concluded, “we have a bunch of new phases and we are “reloading” not rebuilding. We have changed our team philosophy and as a team we are truly excited to begin this season.” Rowan will be the Bobcats first opponent of the year during FSU’s 10th Annual Jim Crawley Tournament as they open up the season in Bobcat Arena at 6:00 pm this Friday.

About Frostburg

FrostburgSports.com

B O B C ATS

From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students.

Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which

housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.

Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University

owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located.

Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed

the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
