Coaching Staff Justin Anderson College: Mary Washington
Head Coach Justin Anderson enters his third year as the head coach of the Frostburg State University swimming teams in 2015-16. In Anderson’s second season with the Bobcats, he led both the men’s and women’s squads to the most successful finishes at the CAC Championships in Frostburg history; both the men and women finished sixth. He guided the women to breaking five school records; including three individual records by freshman Macey Nitchie. Nitchie broke records in the 50-yard freestyle (24.79), 100-yard freestyle (53.79) and 200-yard freestyle (1:56.07). The 200-yard medley relay team of Macey Nitchie, Sara King, Jaclyn Franzak and Kaitlyn Donch recorded a new record of 1:54.24; breaking the record held from the previous year. The 400-yard medley relay of Nitchie, Maci Qunitanilla, Donch and Franzak broke the school record in 4:10.00. On the men’s side Anderson coached freshman Christian March to record breaking performances in the 100-yard breaststroke (57:61.) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.23). Anderson ended his record breaking season by sending four individuals (March, Nitchie, Donch and Jon Shepard) and two women’s relay teams to the ECAC Championships. Both the women’s 200-yard and 400-yard medley relay teams captured Frostburg’s first-ever points at ECAC’s earning ninth-place finishes. In his first season at the helm, Anderson guided the women’s team to seven wins, both squads captured sixth place at the CAC Championships and Anderson was named the CAC’s Women’s Co-Coach of the Year. For the second-consecutive season, the foursome of Kaitlyn Donch, Jaclyn Franzak, Meredith Johnson and Maci Quintanilla set the school record in the 200-yard medley relay. To cap the season, both Donch and Jonathan Shepard represented the Bobcats at the ECAC Championships. Anderson came to Frostburg after a pair of coaching stints at Trinity College (Conn.) and the University of Mary Washington (Va.). Anderson served on the Trinity coaching staff as an assistant since August 2011. He headed the program’s recruiting efforts and implemented practice plans. He helped recruit the first-ever male swimmer to achieve NCAA provisional qualifying times in multiple events and he guided the women’s team to their highest GPA in program history and the tenth highest GPA in the nation. He also assisted the aquatics director with planning and coordinating the facility schedule and lifeguard coverage. He coached the Bantams to over 200 personal best times, 29 varsity school records, 12 firstyear records and six NCAA provisional qualifying performances.
A 2010 graduate of the University of Mary Washington, Anderson served as an assistant at his alma mater in 2010-11 where he coached some of the top athletes at the Division III national level. He outlined and implemented daily practices, assisted in recruiting efforts and aided in the recruitment of the program’s first-ever U.S. Open qualifying swimmer. He helped the UMW swimmers establish nine team records, eight Capital Athletic Conference records, with two NCAA automatic qualifying times and 15 NCAA provisional marks. Anderson helped two of the Eagle swimmers to 2011 NCAA Championship AllAmerican honors and he was part of the CAC Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year. As a student at Mary Washington, Anderson competed as a sprint/middle-distance freestyler, breaststroker, and IM’er. He was a two-time Scholar All-American for the Eagles, three-time conference record holder and the Mary Washington and Capital Athletic Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2010. A captain and four-year letter winner, Anderson racked up numerous awards as a member of the UMW team, including 22 allconference awards, 12 conference championships and team MVP honors. He also gained NCAA Championship-provisional qualifying standards three times during his career. Anderson earned his bachelor’s degree from UMW in May ‘10. He was a six-time Dean’s List student and graduated with a 3.68 G.P.A. in English. He earned his master’s degree in English for writing, rhetoric and media arts from Trinity College in May ‘13.

2015-16 Season Preview
Coming off a record-setting 2014-15 season, head coach Justin Anderson has a lot to look forward to and big expectations for the
Frostburg State men’s and women’s swimming teams in the 2015-16 season.
In Anderson’s second season with the Bobcats, he led both the men’s and women’s squads to the most successful finishes in Frostburg
history at the CAC Championships; both teams finished in sixth place and scored more points than ever before. He guided the women to breaking five school records; including three individual records by freshman Macey Nitchie and two relay records.
On the men’s side Anderson coached freshman
Christian March to two record-breaking performances as well as earning an NCAA “B” cut, the first in 20 years for the Bobcats. Anderson capped his recordbreaking season by making history once again, as he led his women’s team to capture Frostburg’s first-ever points at the ECAC Championships in March.
This season should prove to be nothing less than
another record-breaking year, as both of Anderson’s teams display more depth than ever before. The men’s team boasts 21 swimmers including eight returners and 13 newcomers. While the women feature a 19 swimmer roster, returning six and adding

“Win more dual meets, improve our standing,
score more points at the conference championship and continue to break records,” remarked Anderson on his goals and expectations for the upcoming season. “Our theme this year is every race, every place, meaning whether you are a top scorer or not, every point helps. I want the team to focus on each individual race to get as many points as possible so we can be competitive in every meet.”
As both teams prepare for their first meet of the season Oct. 17, the newly added depth on both sides will prove to be key. “This will be
the first year we will be able to field a full squad in every single event which will be exciting going into our first meet” said Anderson. Women
The Frostburg state women’s swim team enters its 2015-16 season behind the record-breaking performances of sophomore Macey
Nitchie as well as other key returners in Sydney Fazenbaker, Chrissy Alessandrini and new freshmen Bobcats Maddie Weinberger and Emily Turner.
Nitchie returns as the Bobcats top-scorer as well as the school record holder in the 50-yard, 100-yard and 200-yard freestyles and as
the freestyle leg in the record breaking 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays. “She should continue to improve even more this year,” said Anderson. “She had some pretty drastic drops over last season and will be competitive to win a conference championship in each of her individual events this season as well as continue to break school records.”
Fazenbaker will return as a breaststroke scorer for the
Bobcats and will continue to score points for the Bobcats in those events as well as improve in the distance and sprint freestyle events.
Alessandrini, a senior, will return as a versatile swimmer
for the Bobcats, she will serve as an integral part in the Bobcat free events, as well as in the IM and butterfly events for the Bobcats.
ALESSANDRINI
Weinberger will fill a gap for the Bobcats in the
breaststroke events, after the graduation of top Bobcat breaststroker Kaitlyn Donch. Her incoming times will place her on pace to break some of the Bobcat school records and will put her as a top performer in those events at the

Freshman teammate Turner will enter the Bobcat lineup as a top distance freestyle and backstroker for the Bobcats and should be
a conference finalist and contributor throughout the season for FSU. Men
Anderson is confident that his 2015-16
Bobcat men are the strongest they have been in a decade. He returns top-scorer and record holder Christian March as well as Bobcat contributors, James Williams, Alek Combs, Marquell Proctor, Christian Blocker and Deionn Yarberough. The Bobcat men welcome freshmen Sidney Horton and Mike Jones to the lineup as potential top-scorers for FSU.
March will enter his sophomore year
holding both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke records for the Bobcats,

as well as earning a NCAA provisional time in the 100-yard breaststroke, the first Bobcat to do so in 20 years. He will continue to be a top-scorer for the Bobcats and is expected to improve in the breaststroke events as well as the sprint freestyle events, and is on pace to break the 50-yard freestyle record; he was just shy of the record last season. “He should look to compete for a couple of conference championships, as well as qualify for NCAA’s in both the breaststroke events as well as the sprint freestyle events,” said Anderson.
Williams will continue to be a force in the backstroke events and will look to be a conference finalist for the Bobcats. Combs will enter his
junior season as a butterfly specialist for the Bobcats as well as a contributor in the distance free events and will look to make conference finals for his third-straight year.
Proctor, Blocker and Yarberough will look to improve in their individual events this season as well as add depth to the Bobcat relays to
earn points for FSU.
Horton, a newcomer looks to be a top-scorer in the sprint freestyle events and will be a big point contributor for the Bobcats in those events as well as relays. Jones will also enter his first season as a Bobcat and he will look to contribute as a top butterflier, IMer and relay member as the Bobcats look to qualify their first ever relay for the ECAC Championship.
Sophomore Zach Shattuck will enter this season after
coming off a summer of competing internationally at the Parapan Am, and will continue to excel and tear down U.S. Paralympic records as he looks to make his way to Rio for the 2016 Paralympic Games.
Anderson will go into the 2015-16 season with more
depth in the coaching staff as well, with the addition of

recent Virginia Tech grad, Rebecca Yost. He also will return James Martin to the coaching staff who was a key part of Anderson’s success in the 2014-15 season as well as with the recruiting efforts for the new season.

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
