CARRIE SAUNDERS Head Coach 5th Season
Carrie Saunders enters her fifth year as the head coach of the Frostburg State women’s basketball team in 2018-19. Last season Saunders led the Bobcats to their first Jim Crawley Tournament title in a decade with an overtime win over Rutgers-Camden. Despite a slew of injuries and illness, the Bobcats clawed their way to the CAC Tournament for the second-consecutive season. It marked the first time that Frostburg women’s basketball reached postseason play in consecutive seasons since 2011. Junior guard Victoria Diggs led the conference in scoring at 15.6 points per game and was awarded First Team All-CAC honors. She also led the conference and posted the sixth-best freethrow percentage (87.7%) in league history. The Bobcats proved to be one of the top shooting teams in the conference in 2017-18 and led the CAC in free-throw shooting (70.3%) and finished second in three-point shooting (32.0%). Frostburg also finished third in threes made per game (6.2) and blocked shots per game (4.0). In 2016-17 Saunders helped guide the Bobcat women’s team to their first CAC Tournament appearance since 2012-13 and also became the first Frostburg head coach to earn Coach of the Year honors by the league. Saunders was named the CAC’s Co-Coach of the Year, while sophomore guard Victoria Diggs was named the CAC Rookie of the Year. Diggs averaged 11.3 points per game and senior forward Kirsten Rayner, an All-CAC Second Team selection, concluded the 2016-17 season sixth in the conference in scoring at 13.2 PPG. Frostburg finished the 2016-17 season second in the conference in steals (11.8), third in scoring average (68.0), third in three pointers made (160), third in assists (14.4) and fourth in blocks (4.1). In 2015-16, Frostburg collected three wins and finished runner-up in the Jim Crawley Tournament for the second-straight season. The Bobcats finished fifth in the CAC in offensive rebounding (14.8), sixth in assists (12.5), sixth in blocks (3.5), seventh in total rebounding (39.2) and eighth in three-pointers made (86). The Bobcats capped the 2014-15 campaign with five wins in their final eight games. FSU finished 6-19 overall and was runner-up at the Jim Crawley Tournament. Saunders took over the reins of the program after serving as a graduate assistant for the last two years. The Bobcats saw steady improvement during her two seasons as an assistant. Frostburg increased its win total in each season, and capped the 2013-14 campaign with five wins in its final nine games. The Bobcats scored 19 points per game higher than the 2012-13 campaign and finished third in the Capital Athletic Conference at 68.8 PPG. In addition to its improved scoring, FSU led the league in offensive rebounds (17.3) and finished second in total rebounds (42.5), steals (13.2) and blocks (3.4). Saunders came to Frostburg after a four-year playing career at NCAA Division II Shepherd University. She finished 14th in school history in scoring and ranked second in field goals made and attempts during her career. As a junior, she was the recipient of both the Coach’s Award and Sara Cree Distinguished Athlete honor. Saunders completed her master’s degree in education from Frostburg State in May 2015 and received her bachelor’s degree in communication and new media from Shepherd in 2011.

2018-19 Season Preview
The Frostburg State women’s basketball team is primed for a breakout season in its final year as a member of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) and Division III. The Bobcats return eight contributors and bring six talented newcomers into the fold under fifth-year head coach Carrie Saunders. Year in Review Despite battling illness and injury throughout the 2017-18 season, the Bobcats captured 12 wins for the second-consecutive year and earned the sixth seed in the CAC Tournament. The Bobcats’ return trip to the conference tournament marked the first time since 2011 that FSU made postseason appearances in successive seasons. “During those times where we had so many injuries and illnesses, it made some of the younger kids step up,” said Saunders. “Going into this year, we’ve got those kids that are back as returners that are seasoned and ready.” Frostburg took home its first Jim Crawley Tournament championships in 10 years with an overtime victory over Rutgers-Camden, and picked up a signature conference win over in-state rival Salisbury in Bobcat Arena. FSU proved to be one of the top shooting teams in the conference last year, leading the CAC in free-throw shooting (70.3%) and finishing second in threepoint shooting (32.0%).The Bobcats also finished third in threes made per game (6.2) and blocked shots per game (4.0). Headliners Frostburg welcomes back seven of its top 10 players in terms of minutes played last season, including five players who started at least a dozen games last year. “This is the most veteran team we’ve had for a while,” said Saunders. “From the tip this year, I’m looking for us to come in already having some of that chemistry with the starting five-top six and not dropping off any.” Junior guard Victoria Diggs returns after an All-CAC First Team campaign in which she led the CAC scoring at 15.6 points per game. “She’s the type of kid who doesn’t get flustered and that’s what makes her successful,” said Saunders. “You can throw anything at her and she’s still the same, no matter if we’re up by 20 or down by 20 she’s still competing and working hard.” Diggs proved to be one of the premier shooters in the conference, posting the sixth-best free throw percentage in league history (87.7%) and ranked second in the league in three-point percentage (41.0%). In addition to leading the way in scoring, she also led the Bobcats with 2.7 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
FrostburgSports.com “[Kelly] is playing like a fearless senior,” said Saunders. “She’s shooting the ball well, but she’s also controlling the offense. It’s a new offensive system for us and she’s become a vocal leader within that offense.” Senior Jasmine Tirado-Viscalla tied Diggs for the team-lead with 64 assists last year. “Jasmine is doing a great job of seeing the floor and distributing the ball,” said Saunders. “The biggest things she gives us is her court vision and her defense. If she wants to lock down on the defensive side of the floor, she can lock down anyone.” Junior Victoria Yoder provides versatility off the bench after starting a dozen games in both the frontcourt and backcourt last season. She chipped in 6.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game and finished second on the team with 45 offensive rebounds. “Yoder is a player that can play multiple positions and we will be looking for her to do that again this year,” said Saunders. “She is also very quick and athletic which allows her to be a strong force on both ends of the court. Her best asset however, is that she will not let anyone outwork her, she is truly a player that never quits.” Sophomore guard Kayla Wilson burst onto the scene in the second half of last season, averaging 11.3 points per game over the final 10 games with seven double-digit scoring efforts. “Kayla Wilson is a crafty guard who can create her own shot against any defender but has a knack of distributing the ball as well,” said Saunders. “She is an all-around threat and we are looking for her to step into a large role this season.” New Faces Coach Saunders and her staff are excited to bring in six new Bobcats after losing just one senior to graduation last season. “The exciting thing about the newcomers is that we filled the role of each of the positions we were lacking last year,” said Saunders. “We brought in a point guard, a three-guard and some post players. We kind of filled in those voids we had last year.” This year’s list of newcomers consists of sophomore Jada Holland, along with first-years Anhai Allen, Desirae Shepard, Drew Dunathan, Tatiana Gibson and Anna Reese.
In the frontcourt, the Bobcats can turn to experienced juniors Sydney Stotler and Amanda Emory. The duo combined for 74 starts over their first two seasons at Frostburg. “When they first got here they had the challenge of being thrown into college basketball immediately, which is the best thing that could have happened for them, “said Saunders. “Sydney is a great defender, she gets her hands on everything, she can block shots but she’s also a calming force on the defensive side of the floor. Amanda this year has come in as an offensive force and she had worked extremely hard and this is the best she has looked in the preseason.” Stotler ranked second on the roster at 8.4 points per game and led FSU in rebounding (6.0), field goal percentage (51.9), blocks (29) and steals (33). Emory contributed 6.2 points per game and was second on the roster with 5.6 rebounds per game and 18 blocked shots. Her 46 offensive rebounds were the most by a Bobcat last season. Senior guard Megan Kelly ranked eighth in the conference in three-point percentage (34.5%) and ninth in three-pointers made (41) on her way to 6.4 points and 2.3 assists per game last winter.

About Frostburg

From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students.
Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which
housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.
Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University
owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located.
Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed
the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
