ANDERSON HEAD COACH M A R Y WA S H I N G T O N

Justin Anderson enters his fifth year as the head coach of the Frostburg State University swimming teams in 2017-18. Anderson continues to guide his Bobcat men’s and women’s programs to new heights and the 2016-17 season wasn’t any different. The Bobcat women’s team finished with 10 wins, while the men won nine meets on the season and the women again set a program record by scoring 361 points at the CAC Championships. Christian March and Macey Nitchie were both crowned as the CAC Male and Female Swimmers of the Year after both won three individual league titles and both won three First Team All-CAC certificates. Anderson again led a record number of swimmers to the ECAC Championships as 13 Bobcats competed at the Naval Academic in early March. Zach Shattuck became Frostburg’s first-ever ECAC Champion as he won the mixed Paralympic 100-yard freestyle. The Frostburg men’s and women’s teams finished second among Division III teams at the ECACs. Anderson continued his success in his third season (2015-16) at the helm and was highlighted by Christian March earning the programs first ever All-CAC honors. March finished second in the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes at the CAC Championships to earn Second Team honors. March also broke his own records in those events with times of 56.36 (100 yard) and 2:03.36 (200 yard) and earned NCAA Provisional cut times in both events. March also collected a record in the 50-yard free (21.35) and Sidney Horton broke the school’s 100-yard IM record (58.44). Both teams swam to the highest number of points at the CAC Championships in program history as the women finished sixth with 282 points while the men finished sixth with 236 points. Anderson coached a program-record seven ECAC qualifiers including two swimmers, March and freshman Maddie Weinberger to ECAC Championship finals in two events. On the women’s side, Anderson led the team to 10 school records, including five by sophomore Macey Nitchie. Nitchie broke records in the 50-yard free (24.50), 100-yard free (53.17), 200-yard free (1:54.98), the 500-yard free (5:20.69) and the 200-medley relay (1:53.68). Freshman Maddie Weinberger broke school records in the 50 (30.56) 100 (1:06.34) and the 200-yard breaststrokes (2:25.93), the 100-yard IM (1:04.49) as well as the 200-medley relay team of freshman Emily Turner, Weinberger, senior Chrissy Alessandrini and Nitchie. Turner broke a record in the 50-yard backstroke (29.02). Anderson also guided the women to their first .500 season in over a decade. Anderson capped his third season guiding sophomore Zach Shattuck break 30 class SB6 Paralympic American Records in shortcourse and long-course meters and yards distances. This summer, he coached Shattcuk at the U.S. Paralympic Team Trials where Shattuck swam to four gold medal finishes. In Anderson’s second season with the Bobcats, he led both the men’s and women’s squads to the most successful finishes at the CAC Championships in Frostburg history; both the men and women finished sixth. He guided the women to breaking five school records; including three individual records by freshman Macey Nitchie. Nitchie broke records in the 50-yard freestyle (24.79), 100-yard freestyle (53.79) and 200-yard freestyle (1:56.07). The 200-yard medley relay team of Macey Nitchie, Sara King, Jaclyn Franzak and Kaitlyn Donch recorded a new record of 1:54.24; breaking the record held

from the previous year. The 400-yard medley relay of Nitchie, Maci Quintanilla, Donch and Franzak broke the school record in 4:10.00. On the men’s side Anderson coached freshman Christina March to record breaking performances in the 100-yard breaststroke (57:61.) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.23). Anderson ended his record breaking season by sending four individuals (March, Nitchie, Donch and Jon Shepard) and two women’s relay teams to the ECAC Championships. Both the women’s 200-yard and 400-yard medley relay teams captured Frostburg’s first-ever points at ECAC’s earning ninth-place finishes. In his first season at the helm, Anderson guided the women’s team to seven wins, both squads captured sixth place at the CAC Championships and Anderson was named the CAC’s Women’s Co-Coach of the Year. For the second-consecutive season, the foursome of Kaitlyn Donch, Jaclyn Franzak, Meredith Johnson and Maci Quintanilla set the school record in the 200-yard medley relay. To cap the season, both Donch and Jonathan Shepard represented the Bobcats at the ECAC Championships. Anderson came to Frostburg after a pair of coaching stints at Trinity College (Conn.) and the University of Mary Washington (Va.). Anderson served on the Trinity coaching staff as an assistant since August 2011. He headed the program’s recruiting efforts and implemented practice plans. He helped recruit the first-ever male swimmer to achieve NCAA provisional qualifying times in multiple events and he guided the women’s team to their highest GPA in program history and the tenth highest GPA in the nation. He also assisted the aquatics director with planning and coordinating the facility schedule and lifeguard coverage. He coached the Bantams to over 200 personal best times, 29 varsity school records, 12 first-year records and six NCAA provisional qualifying performances. A 2010 graduate of the University of Mary Washington, Anderson served as an assistant at his alma mater in 2010-11 where he coached some of the top athletes at the Division III national level. He outlined and implemented daily practices, assisted in recruiting efforts and aided in the recruitment of the program’s first-ever U.S. Open qualifying swimmer. He helped the UMW swimmers establish nine team records, eight Capital Athletic Conference records, with two NCAA automatic qualifying times and 15 NCAA provisional marks. Anderson helped two of the Eagle swimmers to 2011 NCAA Championship AllAmerican honors and he was part of the CAC Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year. As a student at Mary Washington, Anderson competed as a sprint/middle-distance freestyler, breaststroker, and IM’er. He was a two-time Scholar All-American for the Eagles, three-time conference record holder and the Mary Washington and Capital Athletic Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2010. A captain and four-year letter winner, Anderson racked up numerous awards as a member of the UMW team, including 22 allconference awards, 12 conference championships and team MVP honors. He also gained NCAA Championship-provisional qualifying standards three times during his career. Anderson earned his bachelor’s degree from UMW in May ‘10. He was a six-time Dean’s List student and graduated with a 3.68 GPA in English. He earned his master’s degree in English for writing, rhetoric and media arts from Trinity College in May ‘13.

He is pursuing a master’s degree at Frostburg State.

2017-18 Season Preview Head coach Justin Anderson is looking for the Frostburg State swimming teams to build off a record-breaking 2016-17 season, and to set the bar even higher for the 2017-18 campaign with several key returners and a talented incoming class. During the 2016-17 season the men’s and women’s swim teams boasted their best records under Anderson at 9-7 and 10-5 respectively. Both teams finished sixth at the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championships, with the women scoring a programrecord 361 points. The Bobcat teams had another first, as seniors Christian March and Macey Nitchie were selected as the CAC Swimmers of the Year for the 2016-17 season. Additionally, the duo each took home three First Team AllCAC honors after capturing wins in their respective events. This season, Frostburg State looks to top last year with the returning talent and newcomers. With 16 incoming freshmen mixed with plenty of returners, the Bobcats are deeper than ever and looking to have yet another historic season. “We are deeper than we have ever been, we have a lot more talent on each side and a work ethic and level of dedication we’ve never had before” said Anderson. “Looking at rosters for the upcoming season, I feel we will be more competitive in every conference meet than we have been before. It’s going to be more exciting than it has been in the past because most conference meets should come down to the last couple races,” remarked Anderson.

MARCH

Women After scoring the most points at the CAC Championship in school history, the women’s swimming team is looking to move up in the conference standings this season. Nitchie, the 2016-17 CAC Women’s Swimmer of the Year, is looking to cap her career as a Bobcat in a big way. She currently has 61 career individual wins including three CAC championship wins along with 16 relay wins. Nitchie holds six individual school records that include the 50 (24.00), 100 (52.08), 200 (1:52.80), 500 (5:20.69), and 1,650 yard freestyle (18:44.23) and is looking to top those this upcoming season. “(Nitchie) is looking for lifetime bests this year and to qualify for the NCAA championships. She wants to have fun with the process and do things no Frostburg women’s swimmer has done in decades. I’m excited to help her make this year her best yet,” Anderson said. The Bobcats are returning their core of relay competitors this year, who hold three school records in the 200 yard medley (1:51.38), 400 yard medley (4:04.79), and the 400 yard freestyle (3:43.98). The combination of Nitchie, juniors Emily Turner and Maddie Weinberger and sophomores Rebecca Marsh and Elizabeth Myers were all contributors to those record-setting relays last season. Weinberger, who earned second team all-conference honors in the 100 (1:07.69) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:29.62), looks to compete for a league title this year. She holds the school record in the 100 (1:04.49) and 400 yard IM (4:54.3), 50 yard butterfly (27.97) and the 50 (30.56), 100 (1:06.34), and 200 yard breaststroke (2:25.93). Weinberger swam her way to 21 wins last season as a sophomore. Turner is coming off a season of lifetime bests after breaking the school record in the 50 yard backstroke (28:83). She should push for all-conference honors in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke in addition to the 200 and 500 yard freestyle. Marsh, who has contributed to the recording-breaking relay teams, will also look to be a top-scorer for the Bobcats in the mid-distance and distance freestyle events. Sophomores Elizabeth Myers and Val Yoder are expected to progress following breakout freshmen campaigns. Myers will primarily participate in the sprint

2017-18 Season Preview butterfly and freestyle events, while Yoder will compete in the mid-distance freestyle events and 200 butterfly, both have the potential to be major contributors to multiple relays. According to Anderson, Yoder has shown great depth across the board in her freestyle events and looks better than ever in training. Sophomore Megan Culbertson will also play a key role and look to be a top-scorer for the Bobcats in the sprintfreestyle and breaststroke events and will be competitive for a spot on the all the freestyle relays. Six incoming first years will help fill in the gaps in backstroke, butterfly, and mid-distance freestyle events. They are: Joanna Cruz, Meaghan Doyle, Lexie Hancher, Megan Hendershot, Alice Ricci, and Taylor Stanback. Men Anderson is looking for big things out of the men’s swimming team this year. The Bobcats will be led by March, the 2016-17 CAC Men’s Swimmer of the Year. Frostburg returns multiple individuals who figure to build off an impressive 2016-17 season, led by senior Taylor Wade and sophomore Jacob Auerbach. Frostburg also brought in a strong first year class of Anthony Giuseppetti, Luke Holloway, Brady Peterson, Scott Walton, Cayden Abramowitz, Sawyer Conklin, Arran Mills, Andrew Wible, and Nick Insley who coach Anderson expects to be top-scorers for the Bobcats this season. March is looking to qualify for the NCAA championships this year and continue his record-breaking success. He holds the school record in the 50 yard freestyle (21.10), 100 yard IM (56.65), 50 yard butterfly (24:40), and 50 (26.44), 100 (55.94) and 200 (2:03.25) yard breaststroke. Looking to add more this year, March currently has 61 career individual wins with three of them coming from the 2016-2017 CAC championships. “March is looking to do some things in training and competition he’s never done before. He has the right mind set and attitude to make this his best season yet and to make it to the NCAA Championships,” Anderson said. Auerbach, who was a three-event conference finalist last year in the 500 and 1650 yard freestyle and the 100 yard backstroke, looks to be a force in the back and free events as well as in the relays this year. He qualified for the ECAC finals in the 1,650 yard freestyle last winter. Wade will be a leader on the team this season as he contributes greatly to the positive training atmosphere and leads by example in his dedication. He will also compete to be a top-scorer in the breaststroke events this season. With a strong incoming freshmen class, Anderson would like to see the newcomers step in and make an immediate impact. Giuseppetti will be a big contributor in the sprint freestyle and backstroke with high IM versatility. Holloway has potential to have immediate impact in the sprint freestyle and be strong in the butterfly and breaststroke events. Peterson will immediately contribute in the butterfly events and potentially on the medley relays, while Walton and Abramowitz will be assets in the breaststroke. “It’s exciting to have such a talented group of first year athletes. They are going to be able to push our upperclassmen every day in practice and especially at meets. As they improve, they’ll also be helping the rest of the team to become the best they can be.” Anderson noted. First year Connor Gioffreda will compete in three events in Mexico City at the 2017 World Para Swimming Championships and enters at eighth in the world in the 50 yard butterfly (36.45) after setting the time at a Para-World Trials event in Colorado Springs on July 23. He will also compete in the 200 yard IM and enters the event ranked 13th (3:19.99), along with the 400 yard freestyle, where he is currently 19th at 6:22.13. “I’m excited to see what he can do at the world championships come the end of November. He has been working incredibly hard and I think he has an opportunity to make the finals at his first major international competition,” Anderson said. “We are focused on being better every day. Something we talk about every day is holding each other accountable and destroying yesterday; whatever we have done in the past, we want to improve upon it and move onward and upward.” Anderson remarked.

About Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
