Head Coach Bryan Christiansen B r yan
CHRISTIANSEN HEAD COACH HIRAM Bryan Christiansen is in his first season as the head swimming coach for Frostburg after being hired from a national search in September. Christiansen was named the assistant coach of John Carroll University’s swim teams in 2017, where he was part of the coaching staff that was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Staff of the Year for the 2018 season, while leading both the men’s and women’s to the 2018 OAC Championship. During his tenure with John Carroll, Christiansen coached 19 conference champions, and both Men’s and Women’s Divers of the Year. JCU also set seven OAC records, 13 varsity records and had two NCAA All-Americans. Prior to his tenure with JCU, Christiansen served as an assistant coach at SUNY New Paltz from 2015-2017. He was part of a coaching staff that led their teams to second place finishes in the 2016 and 2017 SUNY Athletic Conference, coached eight conference champions while setting three SUNYAC records, 14 varsity records and 13 pool records. The SUNY New Paltz swimming teams both went undefeated in the 2016-2017 season. Christiansen has coached swimming since 2008 at the club and high school levels and still active with summer swim camps, also directing the New Paltz Elite Camp from 2016-17. Christiansen graduated from Hiram College, earning his bachelor’s degree in history in 2008 with a 3.82 GPA. He was a three-year captain of the men’s swim team and was named the MVP in the 2006-2007 season. He was part of the 800-meter freestyle relay team that finished with a time of 7:06.60 in 2008, still a Hiram College record to this day. He earned his master’s degree in communication and media technology from the Rochester Institute of Technology.

FAZENBAKER ASSISTANT COACH FROSTBURG STATE Sydney Fazenbaker is in her first season as an assistant with the Frostburg State University men’s and women’s swimming teams. Fazenbaker returns to Frostburg after a four-year swimming career for the Bobcats. She graduated from FSU with a degree in business administration with a minor in management in spring 2017, and earned her master’s degree in fashion business management from the University of Westminster in London this year. As a student-athlete, Fazenbaker was a two-year captain of the Bobcats women’s swimming squad and still owns a school record in the 200-free relay along with Becca Marsh, Maddie Weinberger and Macey Nitchie. 2018-19 Season Preview The 2018-19 version of the Frostburg swimming teams will look quite different than Bobcat fans are accustomed to seeing over the last several years. FSU still boasts talent up and down the roster, but both teams feature a few new faces and first-year Head Coach Bryan Christiansen. “We are excited to get going as the teams are ready to race and ready to win,” said Christiansen. “I think the teams will continue to progress and do well on Saturday in our season opener.” The Bobcats are fresh off another record setting season in 2017-18 as the women’s team finished third at the CAC Championships with 401 points, while the men took fifth with their highest ever point total of 331. Combined, the two teams return nearly 20 swimmers from that record-setting year and All-CAC performers on both sides.
HOLLOWAY
“The teams have good race experience and I just want to see how they swim in a meet after great practices leading up to our opener,” added Christiansen. “Our sprinters have been going really hard in practice and I want to see how it translates in a meet and our distance pace work has been really on point,” said Christiansen. A foursome of sophomores will highlight the men’s team this season. Sophomores Luke Holloway and Anthony Giuseppetti will push one another in the sprints in the early going and the staff is excited to see them compete. Holloway broke on the collegiate scene with 15 wins in his first season, including a victory in each of the final five meets. He closed the season with a win, new school record and All-CAC First Team honors at the CAC Championships in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.94. He also earned Second Team All-CAC honors in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.72) and set another school record in the 100-yard IM (55.74) at the league championships.
WEINBERGER
Giuseppetti collected seven wins during his first season at Frostburg, including a pair of victories against Elizabethtown and Marymount. He closed the winter at the CAC Championships with fifth place in the 100-yard backstroke (53.78) and ninth in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.99). Holloway and Giuseppetti, along with sophomore Brady Peterson swam to three wins in the 200 medley relay and the trio took fourth place in a school record 1:37.28 at the CACs. Holloway and Giuseppetti also contributed to a fourth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay at the CACs (3:13.25). Sophomore Sawyer Conklin and first-year Adam Stein will lead the distance crew and the coaches have been very impressed with their work ethic throughout the preseason.

2018-19 Season Preview Prior to the CAC Championships, Conklin collected wins in the 800-meter freestyle (9:44.60), the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:02.94) and the 400-meter freestyle (4:39.96). The coaching staff has also been impressed with first-year Cameron Edwards’ reaction time so far in practice and the staff thinks he will round out the relay teams. The Bobcat women’s team is loaded with returning swimmers and Christiansen was quick to point out the leadership on the squad. Seniors Maddie Weinberger and Emily Turner will serve as team captains and both have been an integral in helping the team with the transition to the new coaching staff.
TURNER
Weinberger set eight school records a year ago en route to 26 wins, including two or more wins in nine of Frostburg’s 12 meets. She closed the season with two school records and First Team All-CAC awards after winning the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.98) and 100-yard IM (1:02.78) at the CACs. Her time in the 100 breaststroke is the second fastest in CAC history.
On the academic side of things, Weinberger was named a Google Cloud Academic All-American At-Large Third Team honoree. Turner opened the 2017-18 campaign with three wins against Gallaudet and finished the season with seven total victories. She posted eighth in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.01) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.66) at the CACs. Weinberger and Turner, along with sophomore Taylor Stanback posted four wins in the 200 medley relay. Weinberger and Turner, along with junior Rebecca Marsh also collected two wins in the 400 freestyle relay and set a school record at Salem. Marsh and Megan Culbertson will also provide a veteran presence on the roster. Marsh will lead the distance crew after a great preseason. A year ago, she swam to nine wins with a sixth-place effort at the 1,650-meter freestyle at the CAC Championships. Meanwhile, Culbertson is one of Frostburg’s most versatile swimmers and posted 23 top-five efforts in every stroke from freestyle to the backstroke. Christiansen also made note of a pair of first-year swimmers in Aubree Morris (butterfly) and Haley Benedictis (sprints). The duo will be stabilizing factors for the newcomers and both will contribute to the relays.

About Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
