From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students.

Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed

classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.

Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence

to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate

chology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.

Head Coach Fifth Season

Guy Robertson is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Frostburg State baseball program and the 12th coach in the programs 65-year history. In his first four seasons with the Bobcats, Robertson has guided FSU to four consecutive conference tournament appearances, and earned a berth in the 2011 NCAA Tournament after winning the Capital Athletic Conference. Robertson has led the Bobcats to a 107-59 record in his first four seasons and finished with an 11-7 record in their first season in the CAC. Robertson has pushed FSU to 28-straight 20-plus win seasons. Last spring, FSU went 28-15 overall and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007, after earning the No. 2 seed and knocking off the top-seeded Salisbury Sea Gulls in the semifinal round. For the second-consecutive season, Robertson earned Coach of the Year honors for the conference. Senior Greg Ross was named the CAC Player of the Year and First Team selection, while the Bobcats placed four other players on the All-CAC Teams, including second basemen Matt Greene, pitcher Josh Davis, catcher Garrett Price, and infielder Doug Anuszewski. Ross was also named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-America First Team, D3baseball.com All-America Second Team, as well as ABCA Mid-Atlantic Pitcher of the Year and First Team selection. Greene was named to the Mid-Atlantic Third Team and was named an ECAC South All-Star. As a team, the Bobcats finished in the top half of the CAC in nearly every statistical category. Frostburg hit .291 as a team (third) and had a .417 slugging percentage (second). The Bobcats also had the second best earned run average (3.51), opposing batting average (.256), and strikeouts (301). In 2011, Robertson's Bobcats finished with an overall record of 32-13, tied for the second most wins in a season and the most wins since 1999, and a 16-4 in the AMCC. With the best record in the AMCC, Frostburg State was named regular season champions and held the No. 1 seed going into the tournament. After falling to Medaille in the opening game, FSU rebounded and won the next three games to face Penn State Behrend in the Tournament Championship. Though the Bobcats fell 8-3 to the Lions, FSU had one of the most successful seasons in recent history. Four Bobcats were placed on the AMCC All-Conference team including Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), who was named conference Pitcher of the Year and Robertson was named Coach of the Year. Over the course of the season, Robertson saw seven single-season records set, including runs scored (60), hits (78), doubles (24), homeruns (14), RBIs (60), extra base hits (40) and total bases (148). Quayle was joined by Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) as NCBWA/ D3baseball.com Pre-Season All-American selections for the 2011 season. Greene was named a D3baseball.com Second-Team All-American follow-

ing the 2010 campaign. In 2009, Robertson guided the Bobcats to a 25-16 overall record, a 15-3 AMCC slate and a trip to the ECAC South Regional Championship. The Bobcats won 13-of-14 games during the middle part of their season and earned the No. 2 seed in the AMCC Tournament. FSU finished near the top of the AMCC in both pitching and fielding. The Bobcats posted league lows in ERA (4.79), runs allowed (217), earned runs (165) and walks (114). FSU also posted the highest fielding percentage in the conference (.955). On offense, Frostburg State hit .308 as a team with 382 hits and finished third in the league in homeruns (28), stolen bases (103) and walks (170). In his first season at the helm, he led the Bobcats to their 25th-straight 20-plus win season as Frostburg State posted a 22-14 overall mark, while finishing second in the AMCC with a 14-4 record. After just a 3-9 start, Robertson got his team on the right track as the Bobcats rebounded to win the next nine games and finish the season with 19 wins in their final 25 contests. Frostburg State, which advanced to the AMCC Tournament for the 11th-consecutive season, placed five players on the All-AMCC teams. Robertson arrived at Frostburg after serving as the Director of Recruiting for the Baseball Factory in Columbia, Md. from July 2006 to September 2007. While there, he helped place kids with colleges and universities all across the country at all levels. Robertson served as the head coach at NCAA Division I Coppin State from 2002 through 2006. He is the school's all-time leader in winning percentage, second all-time in both CSU wins (64) and MEAC wins (30). He also holds the school record for victories in a single-season (21). In 2005, he was selected as the MEAC Coach of the Year after posting a 10-7 league record. Prior to CSU, he served as the head coach for the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plains Collegiate Summer League and the St. Cloud River Bats of the Northwoods Collegiate Summer League. Robertson has also served as an assistant coach for both Towson and Georgetown University's. Throughout his coaching career, Robertson has coached several camps and clinics and has served on the NCAA Regional Selection Committee. He coached camps for the University of Maryland, William and Mary, Naval Academy, Robert Clemente Baseball Camp and has helped with the Baseball Weekly Instructional Series. A native of Westminster, Md., Robertson played four years of baseball at Elon where he earned his bachelor's degree in sports management in 1999. He later earned his masters of science in physical education and exercise science from McDaniel in December of 2003. He and his wife, the former Lisa Bumgarner, are the proud parents of Alexandra (5) and Gabriella (4).

2012 Season Preview

Despite losing 17 seniors and all but one win from the pitching staff from last season’s NCAA Tournament team, 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Guy Robertson does not look for 2012 to be a rebuilding year for the Frostburg State baseball team. “We have the ability to go out and compete for a conference championship,” he said. With the loss of a lot of experienced veterans, Frostburg will not be able rely on just a few players to carry the load as it did last season. However, FSU possesses a “deep and well-rounded team with a lot of guys that can do a lot of different things.”

strides and will get the ball significantly more this year,” said Robertson. The 6-2 sophomore will come out of the bullpen early, but may become a spot starter as the season moves on.

For the second consecutive season, the team received at least one vote in the National College Baseball Writers Association/ D3Baseball.com preseason poll. Six teams that are currently either ranked or receiving votes dot the schedule, ensuring that the Bobcats will be tested often.

FSU will lean heavily on some senior leadership coming out of the bullpen this year. Last season, senior Tico Mendoza appeared in six games and earned a start against Mount Aloysius late in the season. He finished with a 4.26 ERA over 12 2/3 innings pitched.

Pitching The Bobcats will roll out a brand new pitching staff for the 2012 season. Most returners will have to pitch more than in seasons past with the departure of most of the rotation. Looking to step into the starting roles will be senior captain Zach O’Dell, junior Joe Markiewicz, Jr., and transfers Cody Ellsworth and Doug Politz. Robertson has high expectations for the veteran O’Dell. “It’s time for him to take the reins a little bit and be a leader.” O’Dell enters the 2012 season after making a team-leading 13 relief appearances in 2011 and posting a 6.50 earned run average. Despite coming out of the bullpen all last season, he has made five starts in his career going 1-2 with two no-decisions. Cody Ellsworth begins his first season as a Bobcat and will get plenty of work. The junior southpaw played two seasons at Potomac State College and helped the Catamounts to back-toback Region XX Championships and an appearance in the 2011 JUCO World Series. Fellow transfer Doug Politz comes to Frostburg by way of Fairmont State University. In his two years with the Fighting Falcons, Politz made 13 starts and finished with a 4-4 record and a 4.83 ERA. He also earned a West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week Award in 2009.

2011 Season Preview

Despite not seeing any action in 2011, Joe Markiewicz, Jr. has earned the chance to crack the starting rotation as well. In a similar situation is Kenny Georgius. Georgius took the hill for only 2/3 of an inning last spring, but “has made tremendous

Fellow senior Tristen Beyer and sophomore AJ Rosenthal will be called on to throw a lot of innings in their first spring with the Bobcats. Beyer spent two seasons at Allegany College of Maryland before spending last season at Shepherd University. Rosenthal, who also doubles as a kicker for the football team, has been impressive early. The Bobcats will have three lefties coming out of the bullpen in returners Ryan D’Arcy and David O’Brien and transfer Ryan Derr. D’Arcy picked up a win last season in a relief appearance against Juniata after striking out two batters in 1 1/3 innings. Junior David O’Brien made ten relief appearances in 2011, posting an 8.44 ERA over 10 2/3 innings pitched. Derr, who is injured to start the season, transferred from West Virginia State University. With three reliable lefties coming out of the bullpen, manager Guy Robertson will be able to be play matchups throughout the season. Freshman Andrew Rodgers will also be fighting for time in relief. Outfield Unlike the pitching staff, the outfield will have three familiar faces. Seniors John Barrett and Shane Boyd return as well as sophomore Matt Donaldson. Barrett will be slotted in the middle of the Bobcat order and will see most of his action in left field. Last season, Barrett started 42 of 43 games for FSU and batted .309 with 26 runs batted in. He finished second on the team with eight doubles and six round trippers, and added four three-hit games. Barrett is also a reliable fielder after committing only two

10 All-Americans

errors for a .958 fielding percentage. Boyd and Donaldson are more “table setters” and will hit at the top or bottom of the order for FSU. Boyd will man center field, with Donaldson playing in right. Boyd has made 29 starts so far in his career and has hit .271. Donaldson made 30 starts in his freshman campaign and played in 34 games overall. He hit .255, but led the team with three triples and was fourth on the team in runs scored. Both Donaldson and Boyd have the ability to swipe bases as well, with Donaldson stealing bases on 9-of-10 attempts to lead the team and Boyd grabbing 11 bases throughout his career. Also patrolling the outfield will be transfers Leighton Cooper and Mike Virbickis. “Cooper and Virbickis will push for time and have definitely made an impression on the coaching staff.” Cooper started his collegiate career as a redshirt at the University of Notre Dame, before transferring to Darton for the 2010 season. At Darton, Cooper earned 13 starts and tied for the team lead in triples despite limited playing time. Virbickis played two seasons at Potomac State College before transferring to Frostburg. Senior Torian Cyrus was used primarily as pinch runner last season, but did make three starts in the outfield. Cyrus stole a base against eventual Division III Champion Marietta in the NCAA Tournament. He will once again be called on for some spot starting and as a weapon on the base paths. Freshman Nick McElfish is also vying for time in his first season in a Bobcat uniform. Infield Much like the outfield, the infield will show a lot of resemblance to last season. Second Team All-CAC performer Doug Anuszewski, who, “along with Barrett will anchor the middle of the order,” will make the switch from the corner infield positions to shortstop for his senior season. Anuszewski led the Bobcats in batting average (.356) and on-base percentage (.438) in 2011. He finished the year with six doubles and four home runs and also recorded 13 multi-hit games. Joining Anuszewski and Barrett in the heart of the FSU lineup will be first baseman Tyler Hawthorne. Hawthorne hit .282 and collected 31 hits and 48 total bases in his freshman season. Hawthorne led the team with 14 doubles. He also blasted his first career home run on March 22 against Gallaudet. Senior Adam Summerfelt will be manning the hot corner in 2012. Summerfelt made 27 starts last season and appeared in 36 games. Summerfelt has improved his batting average in each of his first three seasons at FSU including hitting .347 last season with five doubles, one homer, and 22 driven in. The senior came through in clutch situations last season as he hit .352 with runners on base and led the team with four sacrifice flies. After battling injuries the past two seasons, middle infielder Pat Sapp is healthy and ready to go for 2012. As a freshman, Sapp led the team in hitting with a .385 average and 50 hits. He was second on the team in slugging (.538) and RBIs (33). Sapp has shown great patience at the plate, as he has drawn 33 walks so far in his career and has been a terror on the base paths with 19 stolen bases. Behind the dish will be senior Garrett Price. Price, a Second Team All-CAC selection, hit .306 last season and knocked in 20 runs. He came up huge in last season’s CAC Tournament Championship game against Mary Washington by

Filling in for him will be junior Adam Baxley. Baxley has appeared in 12 games in his first two seasons at Frostburg mostly as a defensive replacement. Also providing depth behind the plate will be sophomore Will Warrick and freshman Thomas Jones. College of Southern Maryland transfer Jon Keeler will provide a key bat off the Bobcat bench in the early going. Keeler will be called on to pinch hit early in the season while Price mans the DH role but will become the primary DH once Price slides back to catcher.

advancing to the NCAA Tournament. In the heart of the conference schedule, FSU travels to No. 1 Marietta for a non-conference showdown on March 28. Last season, the Pioneers knocked Frostburg out of the NCAA Tournament. After traveling to York (Pa.) on March 31-April 1, the Bobcats return to Bob Wells Field for an eight-game homestand before heading into the annual CAC Tournament on April 17. Frostburg will entertain Lebanon Valley and Catholic in the non-conference and CAC foes St. Mary’s and Wesley.

Senior Daniel Jester will be used as a utility infielder and could see time anywhere from shortstop and third base to catcher. Jester had six starts in the middle infield a season ago and had two of his six hits against Marietta in the NCAA tourney.

After the CAC Tournament, the Bobcats will face three tough opponents in three days. Frostburg will travel to No. 21 Shenandoah on April 26 and follow that up with a doubleheader at Penn State Altoona the following day. The Bobcats end their three game stretch when they entertain La Roche on April 28 at 4:00 p.m.

Sophomore Will Jones has impressed the coaching staff in the early season with his improvement as a hitter and will see time as a DH and a pinch hitter. Senior second basemen John Northam will be used primarily as a defensive replacement late in games while junior transfer J.K. Filauro will back up Anuszewski and Summerfelt on the left side of the infield.

Coach Robertson thinks the difficult schedule will help his team improve and gain confidence in the fact that they can compete with top-notch competition day-in and day-out. “It doesn’t let up with conference rolling right around. We have mid-week games with Shenandoah and Marietta. We play a quality opponent almost every time out.”

Schedule

With the ability to contend for a conference title, the Bobcats are still faced with filling some holes in the pitching staff and veterans stepping into increased roles.

Frostburg faces a challenging and competitive schedule again in 2012. The Bobcats face six opponents that are either currently ranked or receiving votes in the preseason NCBWA/D3Baseball. com poll. Frostburg will be tested early as they face No. 25 BirminghamSouthern in its first weekend of the season on February 19 at the Methodist Tournament. The CAC schedule will be difficult early as the Bobcats open CAC play on the road against two of the top teams in the conference. FSU has a three game set against Mary Washington on March 3 and 4, before traveling to conference rival Salisbury the following weekend. Salisbury opens the season at No. 9 after
