Head Coach Wes Landrum Wes Landrum College: Frostburg State

Head Coach Wes Landrum enters his seventh year as head coach of the Frostburg State women’s softball program in the spring of 2012. Landrum has guided the Bobcats to four-straight conference tournament finals, including a runner-up showing in the CAC last season. Frostburg State advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2010 for the first time in program history after playing in the 2009 ECAC Tournament. He has led FSU to 20 or more wins in four of his six previous seasons, including a school record 30 victories in 2010. Frostburg State has also posted a 58-20 record at Bobcat Field under Landrum’s guidance, including a remarkable 19-2 mark in the last two seasons. Last year, FSU overcame some early season struggles to advance to the CAC Tournament Championship game in its first year as a member of the conference. The Bobcats earned the third seed in the league tournament and closed out the season with a 13-6 record. Frostburg finished second in the CAC in batting average (.283), runs (168), home runs (23) and walks (98). Landrum guided the Bobcats to new heights in 2010 as the Bobcats finished 30-16 overall, 16-4 in their final year in the AMCC and won 13 of 15 games prior to entering the NCAA Tournament. As the No. 2 seed, FSU breezed through the AMCC Tournament with shutouts over La Roche (3-0) and top seed Mt. Aloysius (1-0) before downing Medaille in the title game (7-1). Four players were placed on the All-AMCC teams and Landrum was named the league’s Coach of the Year. FSU set school records in games played (46), at-bats (1,241), hits (377), stolen bases (56) and fielding percentage (.953). Frostburg also tied school marks for ERA (2.25) and complete games (42). In 2009, Landrum led the team to a 26-18 overall record, a 10-8 slate in the AMCC and a 9-3 record at home at Bobcat Field. The Bobcats earned the sixth and final seed in the AMCC Tournament and knocked off No. 4 Pitt-Greensburg (3-1), No. 3 Medaille (5-2) and No. 2 Mt. Aloysius (3-0) on their way to the championship contest. The team led the AMCC in homeruns (25) and walks (151) and finished third in runs scored (216) and fourth in both hits (304) and triples (14). On defense, the Bobcats were second in the league ERA (2.25), wins (26) and strikeouts (221) and were fifth in fielding percentage (.947). In 2008, Landrum led Frostburg State to an improbable run through the AMCC Tournament as the No. 5 seed. FSU, which finished the year 21-22 and 9-9 in the conference, advanced all the way to the league championship before falling to Penn State Behrend in two games. The Bobcats, who finished the season with seven wins in their final 10 games and placed three players on the All-AMCC teams, finished second in the league in homeruns (23) and third in runs scored (228), wins (21) and ERA (3.82). Landrum guided the Bobcats to a 16-19 overall record and an 11-7 AMCC slate in the 2007 season. FSU was 9-1 at home but struggled away from Bobcat Field posting a 7-18 record. Frostburg State finished the regular season fifth in the AMCC (11-7) and was eliminated in the conference tournament opening round, with a 3-2 setback to Medaille. Five players earned All-AMCC honors including the league's Co-Newcomer of the Year, Katelyn Coffey. In 2006, FSU finished 24-18 overall and 13-5 in the AMCC. The Bobcats opened the season with a 3-7 record before winning 12 of the next 14 contests. Frostburg State earned the No. 4 seed in the AMCC Tournament downed No. 5 La Roche in the opening round, but was eliminated with losses to top-seed Penn State Behrend (3-0) and third seed Lake Erie (3-1). FSU placed four players on the all-conference team including three first-team selections. In 2005, Landrum led the Bobcats to 17-19 overall record and an 11-7 mark in the AMCC. FSU finished fourth in the AMCC regular-season standings and was also fourth at the AMCC Tournament. Landrum took over the Bobcats with a 5-8 record and guided the team to 11 victories in its next 14 games, including six-straight wins to close out that stretch, which pushed FSU to 16-11 overall and 11-1 in the AMCC. Bad weather forced the Bobcats to close out the regular season with three key AMCC road doubleheaders in a four-day span, and FSU dropped all six contests, including four by just a single run, to fall to 16-17 overall and 11-7 in the league. Seven Bobcat players earned All-AMCC honors, including three who were named to the first team. Landrum began his coaching career as FSU’s top assistant in the fall of 2002 and helped the Bobcats quickly become one of the top teams in the AMCC. In two seasons as an assistant, FSU won 39 games and set 28 school records in 2004. In ‘04, the Bobcats claimed their first-ever regular-season AMCC title, hosted the AMCC Tournament for the first time and earned a berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament, the first post-season invitation in the program’s history. Landrum has coached 29 All-AMCC selections, including the 2010 Pitcher of the Year, 2003 and 2007 Newcomer's of the Year and the 2004 and 2010 (Co-) Player’s of the Year. FSU has also enjoyed great success in the classroom during Landrum’s coaching tenure, ranking among the top National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III academic squads in 2004. The Bobcats have also had four NFCA All-America ScholarAthlete selections over the past few years and a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.

Assistant Coaches Brittany Lounge College: Salisbury

Assistant Coach Brittany Lounge enters her second year as an assistant coach for the Frostburg State softball team. Lounge joined the Bobcats from Salisbury University where she earned Dean’s List honors and was a member of the National Athletic Academic Honor Society. She earned her degree in elementary education with a minor in mathematics while posting a 3.5 GPA. On the field, Lounge served as Salisbury’s designated hitter throughout her career. As team captain in 2010, she earned Second Team All-Capital Athletic Conference honors and also was named Third Team All-Atlantic Region by Louisville Slugger and the NFCA. In 2009, she contributed to Salisbury’s run to the Division III World Series. Lounge also ranks seventh in NCAA history with 46 career sacrifices. She is pursuing her master’s in special education at Frostburg.

Christa Fullwood College: Gardner-Webb

Assistant Coach Christa Fullwood enters her first year as a graduate assistant coach for the Frostburg State University softball team in 2011-12. Fullwood was a standout student-athlete for NCAA Division I Gardner-Webb University from 2007-10. She re-wrote the career record books and took home numerous honors. She is first in career batting average (.380) and fielding percentage (.992), second in RBIs (107) and doubles (31) and third in home runs (20). She also holds single-season records in batting average (.460 in 2009), total bases (106 in 2010) and walks (27 in 2010). As a senior, Fullwood was named to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second Team, NFCA Scholar-athlete, Lowes Senior Class Award Finalist and was a Seahawk Classic All-Tournament Team selection. She was a two-time GWU Offensive MVP (2009 & 2010), two-time First Team All-Big South selection (2009 & 2010), two-time Big South All-Academic team honoree (2009 & 2010), two-time NCCSIA All-State University Division First Team (2009 & 2010) and two-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll student (2009 & 2010). As a junior, Fullwood ranked in the top-10 in both the country and Big South with a .460 batting average, was named the GWU Female Athlete of the Year and was selected to the Big South and Samford University Bulldog Bash All-Tournament teams. Fullwood played both basketball and softball at Mars Hill College as a freshman in 2006-07. She was a Dean’s List student both semesters and was named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Fullwood graduated from Gardner-Webb in May of 2010 with a double major in psychology and sociology and finished with a 3.69 GPA. She is currently pursuing her MBA at Frostburg State.

2012 Season Preview A mild Frostburg winter has those thinking spring in higher spirits these days, and Frostburg State head softball coach Wes Landrum can be counted among that group. After a successful first season in the Capital Athletic Conference that included a berth in the conference championship round, the Bobcats are looking to build upon their feats in 2012. “Every year is always so unique from the standpoint of where you fit in to the conference,” Landrum said. And because of the CAC tournament occurring in mid-April, a couple weeks earlier than many conferences, finding out about your team must happen on an accelerated basis. That shouldn’t pose too large of an issue for Frostburg. The Bobcats have more upperclassmen in the starting lineup than freshman or sophomores. That level of experience breeds a certain level of maturity on the club and should encourage growth from the younger players.

LOVEND

Landrum saw plenty of growth from last season’s CAC Co-Rookie of the Year and ECAC Second Team All-Star, Caitlin Lovend. After hitting .402 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs as a freshman, she returns to the middle of the Bobcat order. While the chances of a sophomore slump are slim, Landrum is aware of some potential pitfalls. Teams will be more than willing to pitch around Lovend, so she must be willing to stay patient and not chase bad pitches. “She just needs to stay within herself,” he said. “She’s our most talented hitter. She’s going to have to be successful for our offense to be successful.” Lovend’s move to first base places junior Megan Butzner behind the plate in 2012. Slowed last season due to injury and offensive struggles early in the year, Butzner looks ready to make a full recovery. The irony is that the hamstring injury may have been a blessing in disguise. It forced her to change her stride, which is what Landrum felt was the problem that hindered her offensive output. Butzner also had a great understanding of how to handle the pitching staff. “She can make good changes on the fly. That’s why I love her behind the plate.” The staff that Butzner will work with is led by senior Lauren Scrivener. With the expected increase in innings pitched, she has worked very hard to add some new pitches to her repertoire. She pitched 85 1/3 innings and posted a 4-6 record with a 3.86 ERA. “She understands that her workload is going to increase and that she has to be better,” Landrum said. “Her confidence level is higher than it was last year. I expect good things from her.” Junior Shari Beavers joins Scrivener on the staff. A broken ankle has set her back, but Landrum predicted that she will see her 11-inning output from 2011 increase tenfold. Senior Jordan Wright will also vie for innings this season. A pitcher in junior college, Wright played first base and outfield in her first year with Frostburg. “We just have to get her back into the flow of pitching,” Landrum said. “She throws the ball hard. It’s just a matter of working on some basic mechanics.” Beavers and Wright will pull double duty when they aren’t pitching. Beavers is projected to be the team’s starting shortstop. Her responsibility will be to provide power and also protection in the order for Lovend. In 2011, Beavers hit five home runs and had 18 RBIs and was second to Lovend on the team with a .559 slugging percentage. Fifteen of Beavers’ 28 hits were extra-base hits. “She’s a very strong, super athletic girl that has the ability to make any necessary adjustment.”

2012 Season Preview With versatility being her biggest asset, Wright will add second base and left field to her pitching responsibilities. Newcomer Kerri O’Malley is competing for time at second base. A junior, she transferred from CCBC-Catonsville. She played shortstop in high school and college, and those good hands and solid understanding of the game should translate nicely to second base. A good all-around player, O’Malley’s gap-to-gap hitting shouldn’t lag at all behind her defense. Landrum is impressed with his veteran group’s ability to step up and take charge. Junior Taylor Vandegrift exemplifies that thought with her move to center field. She starred at shortstop last season, hitting .364 in 34 starts. Vandegrift tackles a couple of new adventures in 2012. Besides moving to center field to fill the hole vacated by Brooke Tapman, she will also lead off for the first time in her career. “She’s athletic and fast enough to play center field,” Landrum said. “We needed someone to take control, and we see her filling that role for us.” Offensively, Vandegrift may be the Bobcats’ most advanced overall offensive player. She’s the team’s most versatile slap-hitter. The goal for her is to hit better than that .364 average she posted in 2011. “Center field and leading off are two things she’s never done before. But she’s mentally prepared to make the switch.” Junior Megan Foy returns to her starting position at third base. A natural shortstop, Foy looks more comfortable each time she takes the field at third. The Bobcats are looking for her to continue to improve offensively and defensively. She’s back to hitting the ball on a line this spring and has made a conscious effort to improve upon her nine errors committed last season. Sophomore speedster Emilee Ray will compete for one of the corner outfield positions. She’s gaining more confidence each time out and will have many more at-bats to improve offensively. The primary goal is get Ray on base, and her spot at the bottom of the order will serve as an extra lead-off hitter to set the table for Vandegrift, Lovend and company. “Whether stealing bases or scoring from first base on a double, we need her to use her speed,” Landrum said. “I’m excited to have her play some more.” Freshman Bailey Ellsworth is also in the competition for the other corner outfield spot. She came into the program as a part-time slapper but will be doing it consistently with the Bobcats. Because of that emphasis, Ellsworth should grow exponentially as a hitter as the season progresses. “She’s fast, aggressive and a good athlete. She has the ability to pick up on the little things.” Seniors Beth Whitehead and Jenna Delaney both have the ability to play a variety of positions around the diamond. Whitehead is a smart baserunner and should get some opportunities in that regard. Delaney has expanded her defensive skill set to include playing the outfield and second base after primarily being a third baseman. Newcomers Emily Tempestilli and Amanda Hennessee round out the roster. Tempestilli transferred to Frostburg from Hood College and has been hurt for much of the preseason. Hennessee will back up at first base and see some time as the designated player. “We’ll definitely have some options and we’ll try to play the hot hand,” Landrum said. “We can play in a variety of ways. We may hit fewer home runs, but we have a deeper lineup top-to-bottom than we did last year.” There’s much to like about the 2012 version of the Frostburg State softball team. And while the team can show off its versatility by having players be able to handle multiple positions, there’s really only one position that will suit the Bobcats: the top of the CAC leaderboard come mid-April. “Our expectation is to be in the conference final again,” Landrum said. “Hopefully the results are better for us this time around.”
