Webb Hatch Head Coach 15th Season Webb Hatch begins his 15th season as the head men’s basketball coach at Frostburg State University as well as his 40th year of coaching. In his first 14 years at the helm, Hatch has guided the Bobcats to 180 overall wins including 90 in the AMCC and 22 in their first three years as a member of the CAC. The winningest coach in the program’s 71-year history, Hatch has also led FSU to one Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament championship, a pair of AMCC Tournament second-place finishes and one Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region Runner-Up showing. Last year, FSU finished with 10 wins and earned a berth in the CAC Tournament following a fifth-place regular-season finish. The Bobcats finished third in the conference in scoring (69.8), third in rebounding (35.2) and third in field goals made (643). Senior Christian Jackson finished second in NCAA Division III in scoring (25.8), set FSU’s single-season scoring mark and finished just seven points shy of setting the CAC scoring record. In 2011-12, Frostburg posted an even 13-13 overall record, but grabbed 10 wins in the CAC and made a trip to the CAC Tournament. Frostburg led the league in scoring (72.4), tied for the conference lead in steals (9.7) and finished second in field goals (682), three-pointers (158), offensive rebounding (13.4) and assists (12.9). In 2010-11, Hatch became the school’s all-time winningest coach after leading the team to 11 wins. With a victory over Stevenson in mid-January, Hatch surpassed Oscar Lewis for the all-time wins mark. Hatch and the Bobcats kicked off the 2010-11 season in fine fashion with three-straight victories and the 2010 Pride of Maryland Tournament Championship. FSU downed No. 11 ranked St. Mary’s in the title game to capture the school’s first title in the POM Tournament. Prior to joining the CAC, Hatch led the Bobcats through 11 years in the AMCC that included 146 overall wins and 90 in the league. Hatch guided Frostburg to nine appearances in the AMCC Tournament and two berths in the league championship, that included the 2000-01 tournament title. FSU, which appeared in the AMCC Tournament semifinals six times, totaled 18 all-conference selections and annually finished near the top of the league in both scoring and rebounding. FSU combined for 36 wins over the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons, the second-highest two-year total in the program’s history (trailing only the 37 wins

Frostburg State will again boast one of the largest men’s basketball rosters in the Capital Athletic Conference this season and 15th-year head coach Webb Hatch is confident in his team’s preparation throughout the preseason thus far. With a healthy mix of returning players and newcomers, Hatch and his coaching staff feel they have significantly improved their team quickness from a year ago. Hatch also feels his 22-man roster contains more depth than any Bobcat team in recent history. “We will be a perimeter oriented team this season, despite our depth inside,” said Hatch. “Our goal is to play more up-tempo on offense, while applying more pressure in our man-toman defense.” FSU returns seven players that appeared in an average of over 17 games last season, but also welcomes 15 newcomers that will push for time on the floor. The Bobcats will have to replace their top three scorers from a year ago, including All-CAC First Team selection Christian Jackson. Guard If the Bobcats expect to be a perimeter oriented team this season, then the guard play will be a vitally important piece of Hatch’s overall scheme and team philosophy. With just a few days left in preseason practice, the point guard battle has come down to a pair of seniors in Aaron Bellamy and Brian Biscoe. While the two players have arrived at their final years on different paths, the duo should push one another throughout the season. Hatch noted that Bellamy is an extremely quick player with the ball, but is also a good shooter and pesky defender. Bellamy is a transfer from Howard C.C. and Neumann University with just one year of eligibility remaining. In his fourth and final year with the men’s team, Biscoe has appeared in 28 games as a reserve point guard. Last season, he played in 16 games, scored 12 points and handed out 16 assists. The coaching staff feels that Biscoe has improved throughout his career, and if healthy, should be able to handle the starting point guard duties. Competing for reserve minutes at the point this season will be a pair of transfers in junior Quinton Dodson and sophomore Kurt Gangler. Dodson is a left-handed player from Southern Maryland, while Gangler is from nearby Garrett College following a high school playing career at Southern Garrett. The shooting or two guard position will be a battle between three players that includes a pair of returners. The threesome will play an important role if the Bobcats are to be a perimeter oriented team this season. Sophomore Royce Hunsberger might hold the upper hand heading into the season opener after playing in 23 games a year ago with five starts. He was fourth on the team in scoring (137 pts.) and third in three-pointers (23). He scored a season-high 17 points in the Bobcats’ CAC Tournament opening round contest. Hunsberger is one of the team’s top shooters and his overall production should increase following an offseason of improved conditioning. Sophomore Nick Smoot is an extremely quick player that appeared in 10 games last season. He totaled 28 points with 15 assists, while averaging nearly 15 minutes a game. Gangler will also see time at the two-guard position with his versatility. He is a hard-nosed player that possesses a good shot. The small forward position or three spot will be powered by a pair of players that have separated themselves throughout the preseason according to the coaching staff. Junior James Peters is a left-handed transfer from Howard C.C. where he earned Defensive Player of the Year honors as a freshman. He has great range when it comes to
shooting and will be vital to the team’s perimeter offense. Junior Shawn Henson returns with plenty of game experience under his belt having played in 23 games with 12 starts as a sophomore. Henson has gotten stronger during the offseason and should improve on his 84 points and 70 rebounds from last season. Post Despite the accent on the perimeter play this season, the Bobcat depth inside will be crucial to the team and will be led by a pair of returners in senior Robert Williams and junior Jabari Kamau. Williams played in 14 games as a junior, shot 50.0 percent from the floor with 22 points and 23 rebounds. He has significantly improved during the offseason and will provide a senior presence in the middle. Kamau is the most experienced post player having played in 45 games with 18 starts during his first two years as a Bobcat. A hard-working and versatile big man, Kamau returns as the team’s leading rebounder after pulling down 134 boards as a junior. He also added 122 points, 22 steals and 16 blocks. Junior Tyler Campbell is a strong and hard working inside player in his first season with Frostburg after transferring from Harford C.C. A strong defensive presence in the paint, the coaching staff will count on Campbell to be a scoring threat in 2013-14 with his size and strength. Juniors Joshua Corbett and Torrell Goodman round out the top post players on the roster and both are in their first season with FSU. Corbett is the team’s tallest player at 6-7.
BELLAMY
Schedule Frostburg State will face one of the toughest schedules in recent memory as six opponents advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2012-13. The Bobcats open the season with a home game against Bethany (16-11) this Saturday before facing three NCAA Tournament participants in their next five games. That stretch includes home contests against preseason nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon (21-10) and Virginia Wesleyan (23-8). FSU also travels to Randolph (21-6) in late November. All three schools earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Despite the rough out-of-conference schedule, the CAC slate won’t get any easier for the Bobcats as three league opponents also advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2012. St. Mary’s (Md.) enters the 2013-14 season ranked 10th according to the D3hoops.com preseason poll. The Seahawks are the defending CAC Champions, posted a 27-4 overall record last season and advanced to the NCAA Elite 8. Both Christopher Newport (22-6) and Wesley (20-8) also advanced to the NCAA Tournament and were picked second and third, respectively, in the CAC preseason poll.

About Frostburg

From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of over 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 12 institutions and two regional higher education centers. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of 42 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several preprofessional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
