2013-14 Season Preview The Justin Anderson era at Frostburg State University officially began this September and the first year head swimming coach has already seen some significant results. The Bobcat men’s and women’s swimming teams opened their 2013-14 season on Oct. 5, at York (Pa.) and Anderson sees a bright future with both teams. “One of my goals from day one has been to maximize point potential and to take full advantage of the talent we have on both the men’s and women’s teams,” stated Anderson. “I have already seen some huge strides in the pool in just a few weeks of practice and I’m excited to see how much we can improve throughout the year.” Anderson enters his first year with the mindset of increasing his team’s intensity and focus. He has instilled a four-pillar model on which he hopes to build a great program. “The upperclassmen have done a great job of buying into what we (coaching staff) are trying to do and that is to focus on the CAC Championships at the end of the season,” noted Anderson. “We have really pushed the teams to train harder with longer, high intensity, technique focused workouts and everyone has done a great job in responding.” Anderson’s four-pillar model consists of integrity, commitment, work ethic and fun. “Another one of my goals is to work on team bonding and the upperclassmen have done a great job of making the team feel like a family. We are also recruiting several talented swimmers who are motivated to improve, set records, win championships and qualify for the NCAA’s. We have a team and a stable of recruits who are excited to help us rebuild the program and renew the proud tradition of Frostburg swimming,” added Anderson. “Even though we are just a few weeks into our season, many of the swimmers have already posted personal-best times and as a team we are already faster at this point than a year ago.” Women In his first year, Anderson will look to a group of five juniors and a sophomore to provide the best opportunity for the women’s team to succeed in 2013-14. Junior Kaitlyn Donch will focus primarily on the distance freestyle events this season, but will also focus on the breaststroke and individual medley. Last season, she captured nine wins in freestyle events and added another three victories in the 100-meter breaststroke. In total, she registered 29 top-five finishes and the coaching staff will help her focus on overall point production this year, including finishing in the top-eight at the CAC Championships. She finished ninth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.82) and 12th in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:28.13) at the CAC Championships last February. Junior Jaclyn Franzak concentrated on the sprint freestyle events last year at the CAC Championships, but will focus more on the 100 and 200 butterfly and as well as the 200 IM this season. Anderson noted that she has been great with the increased fly training and has earned one of FSU’s first wins of the season at York (Pa.) in the 50-yard butterfly (30.89). As a sophomore, Franzak posted three wins in the 100-yard butterfly. Junior Sara King enters just her second year of competitive swimming, but the coaching staff sees great potential over her final two years at FSU. This season, she will focus more on the distance freestyle and backstroke events and move away from the sprint freestyle. She totaled four wins last season in the sprint freestyle events and took fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (6:18.69) at York (Pa.) in the season opener. Juniors Elizabeth Jarrell and Meredith Johnson were the team’s best sprinters a year ago and that shouldn’t change in 2013-14. Jarrell grabbed 16 top-five finishes in the sprint freestyle events, including a win in the 50-yard freestyle (28:31) against West Virginia Wesleyan. Meanwhile, Johnson posted nine top-five finishes in the sprint freestyle events, including a win in the 200-yard freestyle (2:20.90) against Penn State Altoona. The duo has shown improvement throughout the season thus far and should continue to get better as the season progresses. Sophomore Maci Quintanilla will concentrate on the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 200 IM this season in her second year as a Bobcat. She totaled eight top-five finishes in the 100 backstroke with two wins last year and the coaching staff is confident that she could easily finish in the top-16 in all three events at the CAC Championships this winter. The foursome of Quintanilla, Donch, Franzak and Johnson earned fifth place in the 200-yard medley relay (1:57.12) at the CAC Championships last season and set a school record in the process that had stood for nearly 20 years. The coaching staff is excited about the returning strength in the relay teams as the 200 and 400 medley squads return intact from last year. Men The FSU men’s swimming team will be anchored by a pair of senior captains this season as Jesse Gregory and Vincent Faiella return for their final year as Bobcats. The tandem have embraced the changes made by Anderson this season and provided veteran leadership to the rest of the team. Gregory will focus on the 50 and 100 freestyle along with the 200 and 400 IM in his final year. Last season, he took 16th in the 200-yard IM (2:15.34) at the CAC Championships and the coaching staff feels he has the potential to crack the top eight this season. He posted 19 top-five finishes a year ago, that included a win in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. Faiella stood out to the coaching staff from the very beginning with his willingness to swim wherever would benefit the team the most. He will focus on the distance freestyle along with the butterfly and IM. Last season, he posted 20 top-five finishes in the freestyle events while adding two more in the 100-yard butterfly. He kicked off his junior season with a win in the 200-yard freestyle (2:11.69) and later added a victory in the 800-meter freestyle (11:09.30). Senior Drake Dobish and junior Jacob Aylward have both rejoined the men’s team after missing the last two seasons. Dobish will concentrate on the backstroke, along with the sprint and mid-distance freestyle events, while Aylward will focus on the backstroke and distance freestyle. Both possess great attitudes and are willing to help the team in any way they can. Junior Jeffrey Page will concentrate on the sprint butterfly and sprint freestyle events this year. He returned this preseason with an increased focus and intensity. The coaching staff expects to see big drops in his times throughout the season. He provides a positive attitude and solid leadership and returns after posting 24 top-five finishes as a sophomore. Junior Brian Sentz will focus on the breaststroke this year and returns to the roster after an offseason filled with rigorous training. His work in the offseason paid off immediately as he set a personal best in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:24.63) in the season opener against York (Pa.). A year ago, he captured six top-five finishes in the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Jonathan Shepard returns after a standout first year with the men’s team. He will again focus on the 100 and 200 breaststroke after posting the team’s best individual performance at the CAC Championships. He finished in the A-Final in two events, taking sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.35) and eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.15). He finished his first season with nine total wins in the breaststroke. Shepard will also swim in the 200 IM and the coaching staff feels that with some hard training, he could qualify for the CAC finals in all of his events. Freshman Aleksander Combs fills a huge gap left by four-year standout Caleb Stair. He will focus mainly on the 100 and 200 butterfly and distance freestyle events. The coaches are confident that he could reach the finals in all three events at the CAC Championships.

2013-14 Swimming Media Guide

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
