From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students.

Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed

classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.

Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence

to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate

chology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.

Three seniors were named to the All-CAC teams. In 2011, FSU went 28-15 overall and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007, after earning the No. 2 seed and knocking off the top-seeded Salisbury Sea Gulls in the semifinal round. For the second-consecutive season, Robertson earned conference Coach of the Year honors. Senior Greg Ross was named the CAC Player of the Year and First Team selection, while the Bobcats placed four other players on the All-CAC Teams. Ross was also named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-America First Team, D3baseball.com All-America Second Team, as well as ABCA Mid-Atlantic Pitcher of the Year and First Team selection. Greene was named to the Mid-Atlantic Third Team and was named an ECAC South All-Star. As a team, the Bobcats finished in the top half of the CAC in nearly every statistical category. Frostburg hit .291 as a team (third) and had a .417 slugging percentage (second). The Bobcats also had the second best earned run average (3.51), opposing batting average (.256), and strikeouts (301). In 2010, Robertson's Bobcats finished with an overall record of 32-13, tied for the second most wins in a season and the most wins since 1999, and a 16-4 in the AMCC. With the best record in the AMCC, Frostburg State was named regular season champions and held the No. 1 seed going into the tournament. After falling to Medaille in the opening game, FSU rebounded and won the next three games to face Penn State Behrend

in the Tournament Championship. Though the Bobcats fell 8-3 to the Lions, FSU had one of the most successful seasons in recent history. Four Bobcats were placed on the AMCC All-Conference team including Britton Quayle, who was named conference Pitcher of the Year and Robertson was named Coach of the Year. Over the course of the season, Robertson saw seven single-season records set, including runs scored (60), hits (78), doubles (24), homeruns (14), RBIs (60), extra base hits (40) and total bases (148). Quayle was joined by Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) as NCBWA/D3baseball.com Pre-Season All-American selections for the 2011 season. Greene was named a D3baseball.com Second-Team All-American following the 2010 campaign. In 2009, Robertson guided the Bobcats to a 25-16 overall record, a 15-3 AMCC slate and a trip to the ECAC South Regional Championship. The Bobcats won 13-of-14 games during the middle part of their season and earned the No. 2 seed in the AMCC Tournament. FSU finished near the top of the AMCC in both pitching and fielding. The Bobcats posted league lows in ERA (4.79), runs allowed (217), earned runs (165) and walks (114). FSU also posted the highest fielding percentage in the conference (.955). On offense, Frostburg State hit .308 as a team with 382 hits and finished third in the league in homeruns (28), stolen bases (103) and walks (170). In his first season at the helm, he led the Bobcats to their 25th-straight 20-plus win season as Frostburg State posted a 22-14 overall mark, while finishing second in the AMCC with a 14-4 record. After just a 3-9 start, Robertson got his team on the right track as the Bobcats rebounded to win the next nine games and finish the season with 19 wins in their final 25 contests. Frostburg State, which advanced to the AMCC Tournament for the 11th-consecutive season, placed five players on the All-AMCC teams. Robertson arrived at Frostburg after serving as the Director of Recruiting for the Baseball Factory in Columbia, Md. from July 2006 to September 2007. While there, he helped place kids with colleges and universities all across the country at all levels. Robertson served as the head coach at NCAA Division I Coppin State from 2002 through 2006. He is the school's all-time leader in winning percentage, second all-time in both CSU wins (64) and MEAC wins (30). He also holds the school record for victories in a singleseason (21). In 2005, he was selected as the MEAC Coach of the Year after posting a 10-7 league record. Prior to CSU, he served as the head coach for the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plains Collegiate Summer League and the St. Cloud River Bats of the Northwoods Collegiate Summer League. Robertson has also served as an assistant coach for both Towson and Georgetown University's. Throughout his coaching career, Robertson has coached several camps and clinics and has served on the NCAA Regional Selection Committee. He coached camps for the University of Maryland, William and Mary, Naval Academy, Robert Clemente Baseball Camp and has helped with the Baseball Weekly Instructional Series. A native of Westminster, Md., Robertson played four years of baseball at Elon where he earned his bachelor's degree in sports management in 1999. He later earned his masters of science in physical education and exercise science from McDaniel in December of 2003. He and his wife, the former Lisa Bumgarner, are the proud parents of Alexandra (6) and Gabriella (5).

Sixth year head coach Guy Robertson has guided the Frostburg State baseball team to back-to-back Capital Athletic Conference Tournament appearances, including the 2011 tournament title, and 2013 shouldn’t be any different. The Bobcats return eight seniors from last year’s 22-win ball club, including key starters in the lineup and on the mound. FSU has appeared in its conference tournament in each of Robertson’s five previous seasons and the Bobcats possess the talent to contend for the league title. The coaching staff has also taken a different approach to this year in the form of a team motto that has taken on a life of its own. The theme throughout the entire year, not just as the season approaches, has been “Win the Day”. “Win the Day’ was something I came up with early in the fall semester to get the message across to the players that they needed to do whatever they can to get better on a daily basis,” Robertson said. “It has really inspired a sense of team unity and camaraderie among the players.” “Win the Day” doesn’t just pertain to effort at practice or during games, but motivates each player to overcome any daily obstacle such as things like class, practice changes, injuries and even weather. “We (coaching staff) really wanted the idea or theme to be team-oriented and the guys have responded very positively,” added Robertson. “I feel our players are all headed in the same direction as a team and without a lot of individual goals. All 32 guys have the same team goals in mind and I believe that is what is going to make this team very good.”

2013 Season Preview

Robertson and the coaching staff noticed that the team’s attitude and effort was much stronger during the fall season than in previous years. The returning players and newcomers were able to gel and come together quickly in the fall because everybody was following the team goals.

8

2013 Season Preview "Win the Day" Couple the team’s sense of unity along with the return of 10 key starters, and the Bobcats should turn heads this season and make a push for the CAC title.

Pitching The 2013 starting rotation will rest on the shoulders of a pair of seniors and a junior transfer with tremendous potential. Senior captain Doug Politz returns to the mound with the most wins of any player on the roster from a year ago. Politz finished 5-2 in 14 appearances that included a complete game shutout victory over then ninth ranked Salisbury on the Eastern Shore. Against the Sea Gulls, Politz struckout eight while allowing just two hits as the Bobcats posted a 7-0 victory. He should set the tone for the rest of the staff as his leadership and work ethic provide a great example for the team. Robertson noted that Politz has worked very hard to be 100 percent for the season opener. Senior Cody Ellsworth started to turn a corner torward the end of last season and is expected to throw more innings this spring. He threw just 16.1 innings, but took advantage

of increased innings late in the spring and showed a lot of promise. He tossed 5.1 innings, allowed one run and struckout four in a start against nationally ranked Shenandoah in late April. Junior Austin Poretz is the most physically gifted pitcher on the staff and could develop into one of the top pitchers in the CAC. He will need to develop his secondary pitches in order to become a complete player. Poretz played baseball as a freshman for Liberty University in 2009, tossing 15.2 innings, with one save and nine strike outs. Senior Joe Markiewicz, junior Kenny Georgius and junior A.J. Rosenthal return to the rotation after contributing big innings a year ago. Markiewicz and Georgius could become midweek starters and long relievers as the season moves along. Markiewicz threw 31.2 innings last season in nine games with two victories. The amount of innings he threw allowed him to improve as the season went along. He should become a more reliable and dependable pitcher no matter the role the coaching staff has for him this spring. Georgius has improved every year he has been at Frostburg and continues to work on the little things to get better. He appeared in 10 games with nine strike outs as a sophomore. Rosenthal is coming off a record-breaking year after setting the school mark with eight saves. He appeared in 18 games, tossed 29.2 innings, earned a pair of victories and struckout 10 batters. He will continue in the relief role and will see most of his innings out of the bullpen. Newcomers Connor Cooper, Zach Lawhorn, Curtis Randall, Logan Hunt, Dylan Shupe and Kyle McCormack will be relied on in various roles on the mound this season. The depth they will provide this season will be extremely important to the overall success of the staff. Hitting & Fielding The coaching staff has overhauled the roster from a year ago due to the graduation of seven seniors from the offense. The Bobcats will possess a good mix of returning strength and talented newcomers that will provide a nice upgrade from a season ago. Coach Robertson believes there could be as many as seven new players in the starting lineup. “We have a very deep lineup without a lot of weaknesses,” added Robertson. “We will have tough outs throughout the lineup, no matter who is at the plate.” One of the areas the coaching staff concentrated on during the offseason was to shore up the overall team defense. Robertson believes with the talent the staff

Juniors Kevin Kean (centerfield) and Dylan Shupe (catcher) along with freshman Ryan McGuigan (shortstop) will instantly shore up the team defense and should earn starting spots heading into the season opener. Senior captain Adam Baxley (catcher) will provide a leadership role for the club this season. Baxley started 35 games last year with 18 hits and 14 runs scored. Senior captain Garrett Price also returns behind the plate after appearing in 13 games last spring. Price hit 10 hits with three RBIs in 36 trips to the plate. Seniors Pat Sapp and J.K. Filauro are both solid middle infielders that will provide depth and help shore up the defense. Sapp started all 42 games with 36 hits while Filauro started 24 games with 19 hits. Juniors Danny Morris (third base) and Maurice Adams (first base) will provide stability to their respective positions despite 2013 being their first season with Frostburg. Robertson is confident in their ability to help solidify the defense at the corners. Senior Jon Keeler will provide depth along the infield and the coaching staff hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Garrett Price seeing time in the infield as well. Both could see action as the designated hitter as the season moves along. Keeler appeared in 25 games with 14 hits a year ago.

A pair of transfers will make a push for starting positions in the outfield. Junior Rob Jennings enters the season as the likely starter at left field, while junior Brandon Remalia will push for the starting spot in right. Junior Matt Donaldson will battle with Remalia for time in right field. The coaching staff looks forward to the return of junior Mike Virbickis after he suffered an injury in the fall season. He appeared in 30 games with 12 hits and 10 RBIs last season as a sophomore.
