Head Coach Wes Landrum Wes Landrum College: Frostburg State

Head Coach Wes Landrum enters his eighth year as head coach of the Frostburg State women’s softball program in the spring of 2013. Landrum has guided the Bobcats to five-straight conference tournament finals, including runner-up showings in the CAC in each of the last two seasons. Frostburg State advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2010 for the first time in program history after playing in the 2009 ECAC Tournament. He has led FSU to 20 or more wins in five of his seven previous seasons, including a school record 30 victories in 2010. Frostburg State has also posted a 65-24 record at Bobcat Field under Landrum’s guidance, including a remarkable 26-6 mark in the last two seasons. The 2012 season mirrored Frostburg’s first year in the league as the Bobcats advanced to the CAC Finals after earning the third seed in the league tournament. FSU, which finished 23-18 overall and 8-4 in the CAC, hit .308 and finished second in the league in slugging percentage (.419), home runs (28) and walks (98). Caitlin Lovend, who has 21 career home runs and is second in school history, became the program’s first-ever Capital One Academic All-American. In 2011, FSU overcame some early season struggles to advance to the CAC Tournament Championship game in its first year as a member of the conference. The Bobcats earned the third seed in the league tournament and closed out the season with a 13-6 record. Frostburg finished second in the CAC in batting average (.283), runs (168), home runs (23) and walks (98). Landrum guided the Bobcats to new heights in 2010 as the Bobcats finished 30-16 overall, 16-4 in their final year in the AMCC and won 13 of 15 games prior to entering the NCAA Tournament. As the No. 2 seed, FSU breezed through the AMCC Tournament with shutouts over La Roche (3-0) and top seed Mt. Aloysius (1-0) before downing Medaille in the title game (7-1). Four players were placed on the All-AMCC teams and Landrum was named the league’s Coach of the Year. FSU set school records in games played (46), at-bats (1,241), hits (377), stolen bases (56) and fielding percentage (.953). Frostburg also tied school marks for ERA (2.25) and complete games (42). In 2009, Landrum led the team to a 26-18 overall record, a 10-8 slate in the AMCC and a 9-3 record at home at Bobcat Field. The Bobcats earned the sixth and final seed in the AMCC Tournament and knocked off No. 4 Pitt-Greensburg (3-1), No. 3 Medaille (5-2) and No. 2 Mt. Aloysius (3-0) on their way to the championship contest. The team led the AMCC in home runs (25) and walks (151) and finished third in runs scored (216) and fourth in both hits (304) and triples (14). On defense, the Bobcats were second in the league ERA (2.25), wins (26) and strikeouts (221) and were fifth in fielding percentage (.947). In 2008, Landrum led Frostburg State to an improbable run through the AMCC Tournament as the No. 5 seed. FSU, which finished the year 21-22 and 9-9 in the conference, advanced all the way to the league championship before falling to Penn State Behrend in two games. The Bobcats, who finished the season with seven wins in their final 10 games and placed three players on the All-AMCC teams, finished second in the league in home runs (23) and third in runs scored (228), wins (21) and ERA (3.82). Landrum guided the Bobcats to a 16-19 overall record and an 11-7 AMCC slate in the 2007 season. FSU was 9-1 at home but struggled away from Bobcat Field posting a 7-18 record. Frostburg State finished the regular season fifth in the AMCC (11-7) and was eliminated in the conference tournament opening round, with a 3-2 setback to Medaille. Five players earned All-AMCC honors including the league’s Co-Newcomer of the Year, Katelyn Coffey. In 2006, FSU finished 24-18 overall and 13-5 in the AMCC. The Bobcats opened the season with a 3-7 record before winning 12 of the next 14 contests. Frostburg State earned the No. 4 seed in the AMCC Tournament downed No. 5 La Roche in the opening round, but was eliminated with losses to top-seed Penn State Behrend (3-0) and third seed Lake Erie (3-1). FSU placed four players on the all-conference team including three first-team selections. In 2005, Landrum led the Bobcats to 17-19 overall record and an 11-7 mark in the AMCC. FSU finished fourth in the AMCC regular-season standings and was also fourth at the AMCC Tournament. Landrum took over the Bobcats with a 5-8 record and guided the team to 11 victories in its next 14 games, including six-straight wins to close out that stretch, which pushed FSU to 16-11 overall and 11-1 in the AMCC. Bad weather forced the Bobcats to close out the regular season with three key AMCC road doubleheaders in a four-day span, and FSU dropped all six contests, including four by just a single run, to fall to 16-17 overall and 11-7 in the league. Seven Bobcat players earned All-AMCC honors, including three who were named to the first team. Landrum began his coaching career as FSU’s top assistant in the fall of 2002 and helped the Bobcats quickly become one of the top teams in the AMCC. In two seasons as an assistant, FSU won 39 games and set 28 school records in 2004. In ‘04, the Bobcats claimed their first-ever regular-season AMCC title, hosted the AMCC Tournament for the first time and earned a berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament, the first post-season invitation in the program’s history. andrum has coached 29 All-AMCC selections, including the 2010 Pitcher of the Year, 2003 and 2007 Newcomer’s of the Year and the 2004 and 2010 (Co-) Player’s of the Year. FSU has also enjoyed great success in the classroom during Landrum’s coaching tenure, ranking among the top National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III academic squads in 2004. The Bobcats have also had four NFCA All-America ScholarAthlete selections over the past few years and a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.

Assistant Coach Christa Fullwood enters her second year as a graduate assistant coach for the Frostburg State University softball team in 2012-13. In her first year with the program, she helped the Bobcats to 23 wins and a berth in the CAC Championship Finals. Fullwood was a standout student-athlete for NCAA Division I Gardner-Webb University from 2007-10. She re-wrote the career record books and took home numerous honors. She is first in career batting average (.380) and fielding percentage (.992), second in RBIs (107) and doubles (31) and third in home runs (20). She also holds single-season records in batting average (.460 in 2009), total bases (106 in 2010) and walks (27 in 2010). As a senior, Fullwood was named to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second Team, NFCA Scholar-athlete, Lowes Senior Class Award Finalist and was a Seahawk Classic All-Tournament Team selection. She was a two-time GWU Offensive MVP (2009 & 2010), two-time First Team All-Big South selection (2009 & 2010), two-time Big South All-Academic team honoree (2009 & 2010), two-time NCCSIA All-State University Division First Team (2009 & 2010) and two-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll student (2009 & 2010). 2013 Season Preview For the Frostburg State University softball team, 2013 marks its third season in the Capital Athletic Conference and for head coach Wes Landrum, the Bobcats are hungry for another chance at grabbing the conference title and possibly making an NCAA appearance. FSU has appeared in the CAC finals in each of its first two years in the conference. “Our kids have seen what it takes to win in this conference; I think we are much more prepared than in previous years to finally grab that CAC title,” Landrum said. The 2013 version is a mix of experience and youth, as the Bobcats return their top six hitters from a season ago along with eight newcomers who are looking to make an immediate impact on the team. The expectations are high for this bunch and the coaching staff couldn’t be more enthusiastic about the talent and athleticism that this year brings.

LOVEND

Infield The Bobcats return both starters in the middle of the infield this season in seniors Shari Beavers and Kerri O’Malley. Beavers is slated to be the primary shortstop this year along with contributing innings in the circle. “Shari is very comfortable at shortstop; she’s a very athletic playmaker.” Starting 40 of 41 games last season, Beavers finished second on the team in home runs (9), slugging percentage (.635) and doubles (6). She finalized her junior year with 26 runs, 38 hits, and 31 RBIs giving her Second Team All-CAC honors. O’Malley returns to the Bobcat lineup after a solid first season in an FSU uniform. A junior transfer from CCBC-Catonsville, O’Malley filled the second base position very well, starting 37 games. “Kerri is a fearless defender and she always seems to be in the right spot. O’Malley brings a strong arm to the infield and could see sometime at shortstop if Beavers is on the mound. Anchoring first base, junior Caitlin Lovend is coming off a standout 2012 season. Lovend showed off her slugging talents last year with 13 home runs, moving her into second on the all-time home run list with 21. Lovend’s accolades added up last season including a First Team All-CAC selection for the second year in a row, an ECAC First Team All-Star, a Capital One Academic All-American and an NFCA All-Region selection. She was ranked sixth in the country in home runs, fifth in on-base percentage (.573), seventh in slugging percentage (.886) and ninth in home runs per game (.032) and batting average (.496). Lovend undeniably made an impact on the conference as well, leading in batting average, RBIs (49), total bases (109), on base-percentage (.545) and slugging percentage (.886). Along with her impressive stats she has moved into a leadership role, especially for the newcomers this season. “Caitlin sets a good example for the entire team; she has really proven to be a leader on and off the field.” Sophomore Amanda Hennessee enters the 2013 season battling an injury. She is working to get back on the field after grabbing First Team All-CAC honors as a DH a season ago. Hennessee notched 17 RBIs and posted a .353 slugging percentage as a freshman. Capping the infield returners is Emily Tempestilli. The junior infielder made eight appearances last year and has improved since last spring. Tempestilli will compete for time at third base. The infield welcomes three newcomers in freshmen Renay Aubel, Lauren Capece and Allison Williams. Aubel is a freshman and will see time at the corners. The coaching staff is hopeful that she will make an impact early in the season as she possesses a strong arm and a strong bat. Capece will see time at second and third base. A First Team All-County and an All-Conference selection as a junior and senior in high school, Capece brings versatility and a good glove to the Bobcats. Williams is also in competition for the second base position. She has shown improvement since entering the offseason in the fall. The coaching staff is enthusiastic about getting Williams to the plate for some key at bats. Outfield In the outfield, the Bobcats return two starters from a season ago in senior Taylor Vandegrift at center and sophomore Bailey Ellsworth in left. Vandegrift was faced with significant changes going into her junior year. She moved to centerfield from the infield and batted lead-off for the first time in her career. “With a year of experience under her belt she is a lot more comfortable with both the bat and glove this season.”

2013 Season Preview A versatile slap-hitter, Vandegrift started every game last year and garnered Second Team All-CAC honors for the second year in a row. Last season she was second on the team in overall batting average (.404), on base percentage (.446), runs scored (33) and hits (59). Ellsworth, also a slap-hitter, started 28 games as a freshman and is looking at making a bigger impact this year as a sophomore. “Bailey is the fastest kid on the team, she brings great energy and she has expanded her offensive game coming into this spring.” Her speed definitely showed a year ago when she led the team in stolen bases on 9-of-9 attempts. Ellsworth recorded a .337 batting average and a .406 on base percentage last season. The two returners are joined by three newcomers vying for a spot in the outfield. Freshman Taylor Blevins, the only true lefty (bats left, throws left) on the roster will compete for a starting spot. “She is a good fit for our team, a great athlete and throws the ball well,” Junior transfer Mary Kehoe is new to the Bobcats this season; she brings good speed to the team and will compete for time in the outfield. Catching The coaching staff feels very comfortable with the options behind the plate returning both catchers from last season. Senior Megan Butzner made 39 appearances last season and started all 39. Coming off a sophomore injury, she had a solid season in 2012, recording 18 RBIs and 34 hits in 130 appearances at the plate. “She is an asset to us behind the plate; she understands the pitching staff exceptionally well.” Butzner posted a .982 fielding percentage, the highest on the team tied with fellow catcher, Lovend. She could also see time in the outfield to give the Bobcats an aggressive defensive option. Lovend will definitely see some time behind the plate this season after appearing in seven games as a catcher last spring. “Caitlin is a defensive catcher and she’s good at throwing out runners.” Joining the catching staff is freshman Alexa Nadwodny who will see innings behind the plate. Landrum noted how she is improving and becoming much more confident at the position. Pitching The Bobcats graduated two starting pitchers in Jordan Wright and Lauren Scrivener that accounted for a total of 22 wins a season ago. The coaching staff is looking towards freshmen Mary Ann Moore and Nicole Bradford to fill the vacant spots at the mound this season. Moore is a talented newcomer who Landrum says will see plenty of innings because of her immense potential. “She brings more depth to the staff; we are looking forward to seeing her on the mound.” When Moore isn’t in the circle, she will see time in the outfield. The coaching staff is impressed with her progress on that front as well. Bradford brings a different style to the mound as she is more of a finesse pitcher. “Nicole has a unique pitching style and will be able to change it up and throw different stuff at batters.” Beavers will also contribute to the pitching rotation after making six appearances in the circle in 2012. “Shari will see some more innings than last year as she has worked hard this offseason and it is showing this spring.” Schedule The beginning of the schedule will be essential to benchmark where the team is and what areas need to be improved upon. The Bobcats open their season on March 1-2 in Virginia Beach, Va. for the Beach Blast Tournament where they will face Rutgers-Camden, Mount Saint Vincent, Shenandoah and Wilkes. The next weekend, FSU travels to the Salisbury Invitational to compete against Lynchburg, Virginia Wesleyan, Baruch and Washington and Jefferson. Baruch (17-25) made an NCAA appearance last season. Frostburg begins Capital Athletic Conference play at Mary Washington who finished second in the CAC last season. Possibly the most anticipated match up will be against Salisbury. SU, winners of the last 16 CAC tournaments, comes off a 35-5 season and an NCAA appearance. The Bobcats will face the Sea Gulls, April 20 at noon.
