From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students.
Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed
classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.
Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence
to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate
chology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.

D r. J o n a t h a n G i b r a l t e r University President Dr. Jonathan C. Gibralter joined Frostburg State University as its 14th president in March 2006, bringing a solid record of educational and community leadership. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton, a master’s from New York University and a doctorate from Syracuse University. He worked in the mental health field before entering higher education, where he has served for more than 25 years as a faculty member and administrator. Under Dr. Gibralter’s leadership, FSU has improved enrollment; renewed its focus on marketing, branding and raising the institution’s profile; and successfully completed a comprehensive $15 million campaign, “Staking Our Claim: The Campaign for Frostburg.” This campaign was completed ahead of time and exceeded the established goal by $1.7 million. The University has also developed a Strategic Plan to guide its growth and focus its efforts. Dr. Gibralter is working with the entire Frostburg State University community and has already improved retention and graduation rates. Dr. Gibralter has aligned FSU with the issues of climate change and sustainability. He is a charter signatory and a member of the steering committee of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. In September 2009, FSU submitted a Climate Action Plan to the ACUPCC, with strategic steps for the campus to reduce carbon emissions. In April 2010, Dr. Gibralter was named to the Second Nature’s National Transportation Policy Task Force, comprised of college and university presidents with the goal of combining institutions working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and national transportation policy. In June 2010, Dr. Gibralter accepted
BOB WELLS FIELD
the Climate Leadership Award on behalf of the entire Frostburg State University community for its determined efforts to be more sustainable. His collaborative approach to higher education has engaged faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends in planning for the future of Frostburg State University.

With the best record in the AMCC, Frostburg State was named regular season champions and held the No. 1 seed going into the tournament. After falling to Medaille in the opening game, FSU rebounded and won the next three games to face Penn State Behrend in the Tournament Championship. Though the Bobcats fell 8-3 to the Lions, FSU had one of the most successful seasons in recent history. Four Bobcats were placed on the AMCC All-Conference team including Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), who was named conference Pitcher of the Year and Robertson was named Coach of the Year. Over the course of the season, Robertson saw seven single-season records set, including runs scored (60), hits (78), doubles (24), homeruns (14), RBIs (60), extra base hits (40) and total bases (148). Quayle was joined by Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) as NCBWA/D3baseball.com Pre-Season All-American selections for the 2011 season. Greene was named a D3baseball.com Second-Team All-American following the 2010 campaign. In 2009, Robertson guided the Bobcats to a 25-16 overall record, a 15-3 AMCC slate and a trip to the ECAC South Regional Championship. The Bobcats won 13-of-14 games during the middle part of their season and earned the No. 2 seed in the AMCC Tournament. FSU finished near the top of the AMCC in both pitching and fielding. The Bobcats posted league lows in ERA (4.79), runs allowed (217), earned runs (165) and walks (114). FSU also posted the highest fielding percentage in the conference (.955). On offense, Frostburg State hit .308 as a team with 382 hits and finished third in the league in homeruns (28), stolen bases (103) and walks (170). In his first season at the helm, he led the Bobcats to their 25th-straight 20-plus win season as Frostburg State posted a 22-14 overall mark, while finishing second in the AMCC with a 14-4 record. After just a 3-9 start, Robertson got his team on the right track as the Bobcats rebounded to win the next nine games and finish the season with 19 wins in their final 25 contests. Frostburg State, which advanced to the AMCC Tournament for the 11th-consecutive season, placed five players on the All-AMCC teams. Robertson arrived at Frostburg after serving as the Director of Recruiting for the Baseball Factory in Columbia, Md. from July 2006 to September 2007. While there, he helped place kids with colleges and universities all across the country at all levels. Robertson served as the head coach at NCAA Division I Coppin State from 2002 through 2006. He is the school's all-time leader in winning percentage, second all-time in both CSU wins (64) and MEAC wins (30). He also holds the school record for victories
Ryan Schmidt Assistant Coach Second Season
35

In his first season a year ago, Schmidt helped the Bobcats to a 25-15 overall record, that included a berth in the CAC Tournament. Under Schmidt’s guidance as the team’s primary pitching coach, the Bobcats allowed the fewest walks per nine innings (3.06) in the CAC, while striking out the most batters per nine innings (6.9). Schmidt came to Frostburg from Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio, where he served as the program's pitching coach since 2011. While with the Falcons, he developed year-long throwing programs and practice plans, helped with strength and conditioning workouts and was responsible for game day planning for the pitching staff. Schmidt helped NDC to 17 wins in 2012 with a 6.80 earned run average. Prior to serving as the pitching coach, Schmidt spent one year as a volunteer coach for Notre Dame from 2010-11. That season, he assisted the pitching coach and helped with game day planning. The Falcons finished the 2011 season with 23 wins. Schmidt earned his bachelor's degree in recreation/fitness from Northern Kentucky University in May 2010 and was a three-year member of the NKU baseball team. ence Championship, and seventh-year head coach Guy Robertson is hungry to get his 2014 team back to the top. "Our goal is to get to the top of the CAC and get to an NCAA Regional," said Robertson. Whether they win the conference outright or they attain an at-large bid, Robertson believes that he has the team this year to make it to the NCAA Regionals.

However, when he did step on the mound he was dominant as he led the team with a 0.75 ERA, an opponent average of .186 and three saves. Freshmen Ryan Callahan and Jake Stephens will look to
record and CAC Tournament appearance from a year ago. The team has proven consistently over his tenure that it's not just about getting to the conference tournament or finishing over .500, but instead it's about taking the next step. The Bobcats have a strong group of returners from last year's team that finished the regular season in third place in the CAC, and that includes two First Team and two Second Team All-CAC performers. To go along with one of the CAC's most potent offenses from a year ago, Robertson has brought in a group of newcomers that will look to shore up the infield defense and add depth to the pitching staff. The defensive play of the infield was a real concern for Robertson last season, as not only did it cost FSU a few crucial games, it affected every other facet of the game. By committing errors in the infield, more pressure was put on the pitchers and they were forced to throw more pitches and as a result weren't able to get deep enough into games. This put added pressure on the depth of the pitching staff, which is something that Robertson hopes to avoid this season. He has brought in some top-notch infielders that should shore up the defense, and as a result will help keep the pitchers fresh. This will be important as all games will now be nine innings, including double-headers, and there will also be midweek conference games. Added pitching depth and improved defense will be the key for this Bobcat team. A solid mix of returners and newcomers should enable the 2014 Frostburg State baseball team to make some noise in the CAC and hopefully achieve their goal of a NCAA Regional bid.

impressive junior campaigns a season ago and will anchor this year's starting rotation. Poretz sported a 3.44 earned run average and led the Bobcats with two complete games, including a three-hit shutout in a 3-0 FSU win over Roanoke College in the season opener. Georgius was named to the All-CAC Second Team last year following a season in which he pitched a spotless 6-0 record with a 3.72 ERA. He picked up his sixth win of the year as he pitched four innings of one-run ball as the Bobcats defeated fourth-ranked Salisbury last season 5-4. These two seniors will be looked upon to make key conference starts and build upon their success from a season ago. Sophomore Kyle McCormack was heavily used out of the pen for the Bobcats last season as he made 14 appearances and pitched 22.1 innings in relief. He did a solid job in conference play last season and will have an increased role this season as he will be used as a reliever and spot

Redinger comes from nearby Lonaconing, Md. and was brought in to be a starter and give FSU some solid innings. Huff had an outstanding fall season and will see a lot of innings out of the bullpen to start the season. Warwick will also come out of the pen, filling a short-relief role. Sophomore Logan Hunt along with freshmen Cody Shupe, Kyle Droz, and Rob Wetherbee will all look to contribute out of the bullpen.
