Head Coach Wes Landrum Wes Landrum College: Frostburg State

Head Coach Wes Landrum enters his ninth year as head coach of the Frostburg State women’s softball program in the spring of 2014. Landrum has guided the Bobcats to six-straight conference tournament finals, including runner-up showings in the CAC in each of the last three seasons. Frostburg State advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2010 and captured the 2013 ECAC South Region Championship, both for the first time in school history. Landrum has led FSU to 20 or more wins in six of his eight previous seasons, including a school record 33 victories a year ago and a then school record 30 wins in 2010. Frostburg State has also posted a 73-25 record at Bobcat Field under Landrum’s guidance, including a remarkable 34-7 mark in the last three seasons. For the third-consecutive season, FSU advanced to the CAC Tournament Finals in 2013 after earning the third seed. Frostburg posted a school-record 33 wins on the season (33-12) and the Bobcats rolled to the ECAC South Region Tournament Championship after outscoring its four opponents 33-9. Taylor Vandegrift became the program’s first-ever NFCA All-American after being selected to the third team. The Bobcats established themselves as one of the best hitting teams in the country, finishing fourth in the nation in home runs per game (1.04), fifth in slugging percentage (0.526), 10th in scoring (7.29) and 14th in batting average (0.351). The 2012 season mirrored Frostburg’s first year in the league as the Bobcats advanced to the CAC Finals after earning the third seed in the league tournament. FSU, which finished 23-18 overall and 8-4 in the CAC, hit .308 and finished second in the league in slugging percentage (.419), home runs (28) and walks (98). Caitlin Lovend, who has 21 career home runs and is second in school history, became the program’s first-ever Capital One Academic All-American. In 2011, FSU overcame some early season struggles to advance to the CAC Tournament Championship game in its first year as a member of the conference. The Bobcats earned the third seed in the league tournament and closed out the season with a 13-6 record. Frostburg finished second in the CAC in batting average (.283), runs (168), home runs (23) and walks (98). Landrum guided the Bobcats to new heights in 2010 as the Bobcats finished 30-16 overall, 16-4 in their final year in the AMCC and won 13 of 15 games prior to entering the NCAA Tournament. As the No. 2 seed, FSU breezed through the AMCC Tournament with shutouts over La Roche (3-0) and top seed Mt. Aloysius (1-0) before downing Medaille in the title game (7-1). Four players were placed on the All-AMCC teams and Landrum was named the league’s Coach of the Year. FSU set school records in games played (46), at-bats (1,241), hits (377), stolen bases (56) and fielding percentage (.953). Frostburg also tied school marks for ERA (2.25) and complete games (42). In his first five years at the helm, Landrum led Frostburg to 104 overall victories, 54 wins in the AMCC and five appearances in the AMCC Tournament. The Bobcats advanced to the tournament championship game in both 2008 and 2009 and made the program’s second-ever appearance in the ECAC Tournament in 2009. FSU also had 22 All-AMCC honorees during that stretch. Landrum began his coaching career as FSU’s top assistant in the fall of 2002 and helped the Bobcats quickly become one of the top teams in the AMCC. In two seasons as an assistant, FSU won 39 games and set 28 school records in 2004. In ‘04, the Bobcats claimed their first-ever regular-season AMCC title, hosted the AMCC Tournament for the first time and earned a berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament, the first post-season invitation in the program’s history. Landrum has coached 29 All-AMCC selections, including the 2010 Pitcher of the Year, 2003 and 2007 Newcomer’s of the Year and the 2004 and 2010 (Co-) Player’s of the Year. FSU has also enjoyed great success in the classroom during Landrum’s coaching tenure, ranking among the top National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III academic squads in 2004. The Bobcats have also had four NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete selections over the past few years and two Capital One Academic All-American selections.

Assistant Coach Megan Layne College: St. Francis

Assistant Coach Megan Layne joins the Frostburg State women’s softball coaching staff for her second year in 2013-2014. She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree from Saint Francis University with a double major in English literature and communications. Last season, Layne helped the Bobcats set a school record for wins (33-12) and advance to the CAC Tournament Finals for the third-straight season. Frostburg earned the 2013 ECAC South Region Tournament Championship and finished fourth in the nation in home runs per game (1.04), fifth in slugging percentage (0.526), 10th in scoring (7.29) and 14th in batting average (0.351). At Saint Francis, Layne was awarded the Dr. Philip Benham Female-Scholar Athlete of the Year in April of 2012. She also received NEC recognition as a junior for the Co-Pitcher of the Week and the Rookie of the Week honors as a freshman. In 2011 and 2012, Layne earned the Academic All-District Award and was also nominated for Academic All-American honors as a sophomore. As a senior, she had the lowest ERA (2.17) and the most appearances (25) among her teammates. She started 11 games and pitched 103 innings. In 2011, she started 29 of her 36 appearances and led the team with nine wins and three shutouts. This past summer, she participated on the American International Sports Team for softball. Her team took second place in the Prague Softball tournament against international teams. She

was also a member of the Red Flash softball team from 2009-2012. Layne was actively involved with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and was the editor of the Troubadour at SFU, while also maintaining a presence with the Saint Francis Honor Society and honor roll.

Kerri O’Malley College: Frostburg State

Student Assistant Coach Kerri O’Malley joins the Frostburg State coaching staff for her first season as a student assistant coach after playing for the Bobcats in both 2012 & 2013. Last season, she started 42 games, hit .283 with 24 runs, 32 hits and 17 RBI. FSU posted a school record 33 wins and captured

2014 Season Preview Finding a way to overcome the loss of four multi-year starters, including an All-American, could pose problems for ninth-year head coach Wes Landrum and his Frostburg State University softball team. However, Landrum believes his team won’t miss a beat and will be able to produce similar numbers to last season’s record-setting squad that proved to be one of the top hitting teams in the nation. “We won’t be able to replace both Taylor (Vandegrift) and Shari (Beavers) offensively right away, but I believe over time our athleticism and the return of five of our top seven hitters will help fill the void without a doubt,” said Landrum. “I believe our strong suit will still be offense and we have the potential to put together another very special year.” Landrum is confidently optimistic about the upcoming spring season and why shouldn’t he be? A year ago, the Bobcats led the CAC in numerous offensive categories, rolled to the ECAC South Region Tournament Championship and set the program record for wins (33). And a closer look inside the numbers reveals why Landrum and his coaching staff think the 2014 season could be even better. Frostburg returns two NFCA All-Region selections, one ECAC All-Star and six All-CAC honorees, including the 2013 Rookie of the Year. The returning players accounted for 204 runs, 253 hits and 175 RBI last spring. The impressive (gaudy) returning numbers also correlate with pitching. In the circle, Frostburg returns two starters, 28 of its 33 wins, 126 strikeouts and just 104 runs in 239 innings pitched. With all of the talent and momentum Landrum and his team bring into the spring season, the Bobcats might have what it takes to take home the league crown in 2014.

LOVEND

------ Leading the charge at the plate for Frostburg will be the threesome of senior Caitlin Lovend, junior Bailey Ellsworth and sophomore Renay Aubel. Both Lovend and Ellsworth hit over .400, while Aubel set the single-season school record with 16 home runs. The group also accounted for 168 hits, 126 runs and 132 RBI. Lovend, a three-time First Team All-CAC honoree, finished fifth in the nation in RBI per game (1.36) and drove in a school record 62 base runners. She also finished 19th in the nation in home runs (12) and 42nd in walks (0.62). She enters her final year as the school’s all-time leader in batting average (.445), walks (73) and RBI (141). She is second all-time in runs (110), hits (162), home runs (33) and total bases (286). Aubel burst on the scene as a freshman. She set the singleseason home run record and finished fourth in the nation with 16 en route to earning NFCA All-Region, ECAC All-Star and First Team All-CAC honors. She finished second on the team with 56 RBI, third with a .715 slugging percentage and fifth with 45 hits. Ellsworth enters her third year as the team’s No. 2 hitter in the lineup. A speedy offensive threat, Ellsworth finished third on the team in batting average (.429), hits (63) and runs (46). She led the Bobcats and finished second in the CAC with 16 stolen bases on 17 attempts. Landrum is confident that a trio of sophomores will become larger contributors to the lineup this season as they become more comfortable. Lauren Capece, Taylor Blevins and Allison Williams also saw significant playing time as freshmen and the coaching staff is expecting better offensive numbers this spring. Capece appeared in 44 games and made 42 starts a year ago, the most playing time of the group. She finished fourth on the team with five home runs and also contributed 14 RBI, 26 hits and 33 runs. Blevins hit .341 in 85 at bats as a freshman, while appearing in 39

2014 Season Preview games (36 starts). She finished with 29 hits, 24 runs, six doubles, two triples and 13 RBI. She finished third with a .462 on-base percentage and was third with five stolen bases. Williams has played very well throughout the preseason and she has grown into one of the top role players on the team. A year ago, she played in 30 games and registered 11 hits, 11 runs and seven RBI. In the circle, a pair of sophomores have formed one of the CAC’s top one-two punches. The duo accounted for 28 wins and 126 strikeouts in their first seasons of collegiate action. Mary Ann Moore garnered CAC Rookie of the Year and First Team All-CAC honors after finishing second in the league with 20 wins and finishing third with 113 strikeouts as a freshman. She also finished 12th in the country and tied for the CAC lead with three saves. She allowed just 60 earned runs in 180.1 innings pitched for a 2.33 earned run average. This season, Landrum and his staff expect Moore to have an expanded offensive role with more at bats. At the plate last spring, she finished with 19 hits, 10 runs and nine RBI. Nicole Bradford finished with an 8-3 record in 18 appearances, while serving as Frostburg’s No. 2 pitcher. She tossed six complete games and struckout 13 batters in 58.2 innings. With all of the talent returning to the lineup from a year ago, it would be hard to imagine that any freshmen or first-year players would be able to crack into the lineup and make significant contributions. However, Landrum raved about the talent and playing abilities of his six newcomers and expects them to push the returners for playing time. Junior Maddie White enters her third year of collegiate athletics, but first with the Bobcat softball team. She was a two-year starter for the Frostburg volleyball team, leading the squad in kills (250) as a sophomore. She has transitioned and played well so far this spring and should see time in both the infield and outfield. Junior Savannah Hose is a super athlete and is the fastest player on the team. She should see time in the outfield after transferring from Potomac State College (W.Va.). As a sophomore, she hit .533 with 56 hits, 24 RBI and 45 runs. She led the team with a .829 slugging percentage. Freshman Hannah Tavik brings a successful high school career to the Bobcat lineup. A very smart player with a good bat, Tavik will see time in the circle and on the left side of the infield. She was a three-time Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) All-Conference Softball Player and was a Baltimore Sun All-Metro First Team selection as a senior. Freshmen Emily Zengel and Megan Tracey will contribute to the middle part of the infield at shortstop and second base. Zengel is a very quick player that possesses good hands, while Tracey is a scrappy player with a good arm. Rounding out the group is freshman Haley Leonhauser. Landrum noted that she is a hard worker and a great teammate that was willing to take on the backup catcher role. Leonhauser should also see time in the outfield.

MOORE

Schedule Landrum and his staff will have their work cut out for them this season if they want to match last year’s school record 33 wins. Frostburg faces a brutal slate this spring that features four teams ranked in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top-25 Preseason Poll and a total of six teams that appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Third-ranked Salisbury might be Frostburg’s toughest test as the Sea Gulls finished the spring with a 42-4 record that included an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Championship game. SU has won the CAC 17-straight years but will be pushed by both Frostburg and 17th-ranked Christopher Newport (34-13). Twentieth-ranked Rowan (41-9) and 25th-ranked North Central (35-12) pepper the Bobcats’ early season schedule. Rowan will be FSU’s third opponent of the spring, while North Central will be the final opponent of Frostburg’s annual spring break trip to Clermont, Fla. Washington (Md.)(27-19) and Fontbonne (34-12) round out the NCAA Tournament teams on Frostburg’s spring schedule.
