From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students.

Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed

classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.

Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence

to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate

chology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.

Dr. Jonathan Gibralter University President Dr. Jonathan C. Gibralter joined Frostburg State University as its 14th president in March 2006, bringing a solid record of educational and community leadership. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton, a master’s from New York University and a doctorate from Syracuse University. He worked in the mental health field before entering higher education, where he has served for more than 25 years as a faculty member and administrator. Under Dr. Gibralter’s leadership, FSU has improved enrollment; renewed its focus on marketing, branding and raising the institution’s profile; and successfully completed a comprehensive $15 million campaign, “Staking Our Claim: The Campaign for Frostburg.” This campaign was completed ahead of time and exceeded the established goal by $1.7 million. The University has also developed a Strategic Plan to guide its growth and focus its efforts. Dr. Gibralter is working with the entire Frostburg State University community and has already improved retention and graduation rates. Dr. Gibralter has aligned FSU with the issues of climate change and sustainability. He is a charter signatory and a member of the steering committee of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. In September 2009, FSU submitted a Climate Action Plan to the ACUPCC, with strategic steps for the campus to reduce carbon emissions. In April 2010, Dr. Gibralter was named to the Second Nature’s National Transportation Policy Task Force, comprised of college and university presidents with the goal of combining institutions working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and national transportation policy. In June 2010, Dr. Gibralter accepted

BOB WELLS FIELD

the Climate Leadership Award on behalf of the entire Frostburg State University community for its determined efforts to be more sustainable. His collaborative approach to higher education has engaged faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends in planning for the future of Frostburg State University.

"Our offense is without a doubt a strength of our team and I feel it will take care of itself," said Robertson. "Our offense hasn't really been a problem the last few seasons and we (coaching staff) don't feel it will be an issue again this season. If the guys step up and find even more confidence, we have the ability to be very dangerous at the plate." With the returning talent that Robertson has in his lineup, he and his staff have turned their attention to pitching and team defense. The Bobcats led the conference in fielding percentage in 2014 (.970), committed a league-low 45 errors in nearly 350 innings of action and struck out a league-best 285 batters. "We want our defense to be a strong suit, just like our offense," added Robertson. "We want to be more solid on the mound and further develop our bullpen. We (coaching staff) want to level the playing field so to speak and elevate our pitching and defense to where our offense has been the last few years." The Bobcats' overall team defense will start with the infield and the return of all four starters from a year ago. Seniors Ricky Brady (1B), Ricky Castro (2B), Kam Stewart (SS) and Zach Weiss (3B) will lead one of the top hitting and defensive infields in the CAC, if not the country. All four hit over .340 a year ago and they committed just 26 errors in a combined 157 games. Brady, Castro and Weiss earned D3baseball.com All-South Region honors and all three garnered All-CAC honors. "We want to take care of the baseball behind the pitchers and we feel we have plenty of experience to do just that," said Robertson. "While the infield should be set, we have some holes to fill in the outfield, but the group has the potential to develop into a great unit."

2015 Season Preview Leading the way will be senior Nick McElfish and the coaching staff will be relying on him to provide experience and leadership to the unit. McElfish hit .344 a year ago and didn't commit an error in 32 games in the outfield. Robertson and his staff also stressed the need to strengthen the Bobcat bullpen. "For us to be successful this year, we will need to finish games and we need to find strength in our late inning pitchers," added Robertson. "The bullpen could be by committee for much of the season until the guys become more comfortable, but all of them are very capable." Juniors Nick Huff, Kyle McCormack, and Zach Lawhorn along with freshman Tyler Hoffman will all see time in the bullpen and will play a major role in the late innings for FSU. Huff, McCormack and Lawhorn each recorded a save last spring and all three finished the season with 20 strikeouts. Hitters A closer look at the Bobcat hitting lineup reveals just how potent the offense could be again this spring. Castro (.439), Weiss (.399) and Brady (.385) finished 1-2-3 in terms of batting average, while Castro led the Bobcats, the CAC and finished 38th nationally in hitting. Castro was named an ABCA All-South Region selection. A First Team All-CAC honoree, Weiss finished with 73 hits, just six shy of setting the school record and he led the Bobcats with 98 total bases. Meanwhile, Brady, a Second Team All-CAC honoree, led the team in on-base percentage (.510) and home runs (7). The often overlooked

Stewart led Frostburg in runs (42), RBI (48), triples (9) and walks (26). Combined the foursome led Frostburg State in 16 different statistical categories and could elevate the Bobcats into one of the best hitting teams in all of NCAA Division III. Notes The Frostburg State baseball program enters the season with 1,186 career wins in 68 years and the Bobcats are going for their 14th-consectuive season with 20 or more wins ‌ Head coach Guy Robertson enters the 2015 campaign with 182 wins over his previous seven seasons at the helm. Schedule Frostburg State opens the season on Saturday, February 14 with a doubleheader at Roanoke at 12:00 pm. The Bobcats are slated to open their home schedule on Wednesday, March 25 with York (Pa.) at 3:00 pm.
