Head Coach Becky Fletcher B ecky

FLETCHER HEAD COACH Wash. & Jeff.

Rebecca Fletcher enters her fifth year as the head volleyball coach at Frostburg State University in the fall of 2015. Frostburg turned a corner in 2014 after finishing 13-17 overall while capturing the FSU Tournament Title. The Bobcats, who won seven-straight matches over the middle of the season, were fourth in the conference in digs (1,730), sixth in kills (1,116) and sixth in assists (1,023). Fletcher’s 2013 Bobcat squad finished with seven wins and appeared in the CAC Tournament for the third-straight year. FSU snagged three big conference wins for a sixth-place finish in the CAC, while finishing sixth in the conference in blocks (157) and service aces (211). In 2012, the Bobcats finished fifth in the CAC regularseason standings and appeared in the CAC Tournament for the second-consecutive year. Frostburg, which posted five wins on the season, finished fifth in the league in assists (919), kills (1,003), blocks (246) and digs (1,651). In her first year at the helm, Fletcher led the Bobcats to 15 wins and a berth in the CAC Tournament. The Bobcats posted five wins in league action and were 4-1 at Bobcat Arena. FSU led the league in digs (2,326) and finished second in digs per game (17.62). Fletcher joined the Frostburg coaching staff after a fouryear stint as both the head men’s and women’s volleyball coach at the State University of New York Institute of Technology (SUNYIT). Fletcher accomplished a lot in four

years with the Wildcats, turning around a struggling women’s program while starting the men’s program from scratch in 2008. On the women’s side, Fletcher led SUNYIT to three North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament appearances and a pair of runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2009. She was named the league’s Coach of the Year in 2008 and won 61 total matches in the last three years. For the men, Fletcher guided the team to five wins in its inaugural season in 2008 while in 2010, the men’s squad led the nation in team and individual digs. This spring, the Wildcats made their first postseason appearance in the program’s brief history. In 2009, Fletcher was honored by the AVCA as one of thirty up-and-coming coaches under the age of 30 years old in the sport of volleyball at all collegiate levels. Prior to her time at SUNYIT, she served as a graduate assistant at Utica College for one year in 2006. Fletcher graduated in 2006 with a bachelor of arts degree in biology and pre-health from Washington & Jefferson College. She was a three-time All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference selection and was named the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2002. In 2005, W&J won the PAC Tournament title and advanced to the ECAC Tournament.

Paige Hiatt enters her second year as the Frostburg State University assistant volleyball coach for the 2015 season. In 2014, Hiatt helped the Bobcats to 13 wins and the FSU Tournament Championship. Hiatt came to Frostburg after serving as Southern Virginia’s head coach in 2013. She led a young Knight squad to a 15-9 overall record, including a 6-3 record against Capital Athletic Conference teams in its first season as a member of the league. The Knights also boasted an 8-2 record at home. Prior to Southern Virginia, Hiatt has served as girl’s volleyball assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach at Lone Peak High School in Utah for three seasons (2007, 2010, 2012). In addition to Lone Peak, Hiatt has coached club

volleyball of varying age groups in Utah and Idaho from 2005-12. A 2010 graduate, Hiatt played women’s volleyball at Idaho State University where she earned All-Big Sky honors her senior season at libero and served as team captain her final two years. Hiatt holds the single-season digs record (503) and ranks fifth on the all-time career digs list (1,096) at Idaho State. As a student-athlete at Lone Peak, she led her varsity squad to back-to-back state championships (2003-04), the two-time team captain earned 4A Utah’s Most Valuable Player award in 2004. 2015 Season Preview Without a doubt, the Frostburg State volleyball team turned a corner in 2014 with 13 wins, including the FSU Tournament Championship trophy and fifth-year head coach Becky Fletcher is optimistic that her ’15 squad can continue the upward trend.

And why shouldn’t she be optimistic as the Bobcats

return their statistical leader in kills, assists, digs and service aces from a year ago. What’s more, Frostburg will have just two seniors this fall, as much of the younger talent on the roster resides in the sophomore class.

“A significant part of our lineup resides with the

sophomores and they have shown great improvement following their first year of collegiate play,” said Fletcher.

The two seniors leading the way will be Aimee

Petrides and Caitlyn Collins. The duo helped the Bobcats to a pair of CAC Tournament appearances in their first two seasons and they will be crucial this fall if FSU wants to

[ PETRIDES ]

return to the postseason.

Petrides appeared in a team-high 109 sets a season

ago and paced the Bobcats in kills (324) and kills per set (2.97). She finished sixth in the CAC in kills and should make a push for all-conference honors in her final season.

“Aimee has been a big part of our team throughout

her career and will be a four-year starter,” added Fletcher. “She has a heavy arm and has a great collection of shots.”

Collins returns to the backline for Frostburg after

finishing second on the roster in assists (51) and fifth in both digs (129) and aces (19).

“Caitlyn is the team’s utility player as we (coaching

staff) can fit her anywhere in the lineup,” said Fletcher. “Without question, she is the hardest working member of the team. She brings a great presence to both the front and back lines.”

A trio of sophomores each appeared in over 100 sets

last year and should be even better with a year of collegiate action under their belts.

2015 Season Preview

Naya Cheatem is arguably the team’s most athletic

player and returns to the net after finishing second on the roster a year ago with 270 kills and a 2.52 kill per set average. She finished second on the team with 49 blocks and registered 10 or more kills in 13 matches.

Madelyn Torres burst on the scene as a freshman

after grabbing a starting spot in preseason as the Bobcats’ primary setter. She took advantage of the opportunity by finishing second in the CAC with 883 assists and 8.21 assists per set. She also registered a team-high 63 service aces.

Like Torres, Lindsey Scepura earned a starting posi-

tion in preseason and never relinquished her spot on the court. Scepura led Frostburg and finished sixth in the CAC behind 448 digs. She posted 10 or more digs in 25 matches and 20 or more digs in eight matches.

Sophomores Jessica Bugtong and Zoe Harris will

also see a lot of court time this fall and will fill some holes in

the Bobcat lineup.

Frostburg kicks off its 2015 season on Tuesday,

September 1 at Waynesburg at 7:00 pm.

Ab out Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

About Frostburg resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
