ANDERSON College: Mary Washington Head Coach Justin Anderson enters his fourth year as the head coach of the Frostburg State University swimming teams in 2016-17. Anderson continued his success in his third season at the helm as year was highlighted by sophomore Christion March earning the programs first ever CAC Honors. March finished second in the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes at the CAC Championships to earn Second Team honors. March also broke his own records in those events with times of 56.36 (100 yard) and 2:03.36 (200 yard) and earned NCAA Provisional cut times in both events. March also collected a record in the 50-yard free (21.35) and freshman Sidney Horton broke the school’s 100-yard IM record (58.44). Both teams swam to the highest number of points at the CAC Championships in program history as the women finished sixth with 282 points while the men finished sixth with 236 points. Anderson coached a program-record seven ECAC qualifiers including two swimmers, March and freshman Maddie Weinberger to ECAC Championship finals in two events. On the women’s side, Anderson led the team to 10 school records, including five by sophomore Macey Nitchie. Nitchie broke records in the 50-yard free (24.50), 100-yard free (53.17), 200-yard free (1:54.98), the 500-yard free (5:20.69) and the 200-medley relay (1:53.68). Freshman Maddie Weinberger broke school records in the 50 (30.56) 100 (1:06.34) and the 200-yard breaststrokes (2:25.93), the 100-yard IM (1:04.49) as well as the 200-medley relay team of freshman Emily Turner, Weinberger, senior Chrissy Alessandrini and Nitchie. Turner broke a record in the 50-yard backstroke (29.02). Anderson also guided the women to their first .500 season in over a decade. Anderson capped his third season guiding sophomore Zach Shattuck break 30 class SB6 Paralympic American Records in short-course and long-course meters and yards distances. This summer, he coached Shattcuk at the U.S. Paralympic Team Trials where Shattuck swam to four gold medal finishes. In Anderson’s second season with the Bobcats, he led both the men’s and women’s squads to the most successful finishes at the CAC Championships in Frostburg history; both the men and women finished sixth. He guided the women to breaking five school records; including three individual records by freshman Macey Nitchie. Nitchie broke records in the 50-yard freestyle (24.79), 100-yard freestyle (53.79) and 200-yard freestyle (1:56.07). The 200-yard medley relay team of Macey Nitchie, Sara King, Jaclyn Franzak and Kaitlyn Donch recorded a new record of 1:54.24; breaking the record held from the previous year. The 400-yard medley relay of Nitchie, Maci Qunitanilla, Donch and Franzak broke the school record in 4:10.00. On the men’s side Anderson coached freshman Christina March to record breaking performances in the 100-yard breaststroke (57:61.) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.23). Anderson ended his record breaking season by sending four individuals (March, Nitchie, Donch and Jon Shepard) and two
women’s relay teams to the ECAC Championships. Both the women’s 200-yard and 400-yard medley relay teams captured Frostburg’s first-ever points at ECAC’s earning ninth-place finishes. In his first season at the helm, Anderson guided the women’s team to seven wins, both squads captured sixth place at the CAC Championships and Anderson was named the CAC’s Women’s Co-Coach of the Year. For the second-consecutive season, the foursome of Kaitlyn Donch, Jaclyn Franzak, Meredith Johnson and Maci Quintanilla set the school record in the 200-yard medley relay. To cap the season, both Donch and Jonathan Shepard represented the Bobcats at the ECAC Championships. Anderson came to Frostburg after a pair of coaching stints at Trinity College (Conn.) and the University of Mary Washington (Va.). Anderson served on the Trinity coaching staff as an assistant since August 2011. He headed the program’s recruiting efforts and implemented practice plans. He helped recruit the first-ever male swimmer to achieve NCAA provisional qualifying times in multiple events and he guided the women’s team to their highest GPA in program history and the tenth highest GPA in the nation. He also assisted the aquatics director with planning and coordinating the facility schedule and lifeguard coverage. He coached the Bantams to over 200 personal best times, 29 varsity school records, 12 firstyear records and six NCAA provisional qualifying performances. A 2010 graduate of the University of Mary Washington, Anderson served as an assistant at his alma mater in 2010-11 where he coached some of the top athletes at the Division III national level. He outlined and implemented daily practices, assisted in recruiting efforts and aided in the recruitment of the program’s first-ever U.S. Open qualifying swimmer. He helped the UMW swimmers establish nine team records, eight Capital Athletic Conference records, with two NCAA automatic qualifying times and 15 NCAA provisional marks. Anderson helped two of the Eagle swimmers to 2011 NCAA Championship AllAmerican honors and he was part of the CAC Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year. As a student at Mary Washington, Anderson competed as a sprint/middle-distance freestyler, breaststroker, and IM’er. He was a two-time Scholar All-American for the Eagles, three-time conference record holder and the Mary Washington and Capital Athletic Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2010. A captain and four-year letter winner, Anderson racked up numerous awards as a member of the UMW team, including 22 allconference awards, 12 conference championships and team MVP honors. He also gained NCAA Championship-provisional qualifying standards three times during his career. Anderson earned his bachelor’s degree from UMW in May ‘10. He was a six-time Dean’s List student and graduated with a 3.68 G.P.A. in English. He earned his master’s degree in English for writing, rhetoric and media arts from Trinity College in May ‘13.

2016-17 Season Outlook
In his fourth year with the Frostburg State swimming teams, head coach Justin Anderson looks to roll into the 2016-17 season on the
wave of success his teams have built over the last few seasons.
Anderson’s teams have improved their win records and total points scored at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships every year
and Anderson does not expect that trend to stop this season. The men’s team made history last season as Anderson coached sophomore Christian March to the program’s firstever CAC honors. March finished second in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events at the CAC Championships to earn Second Team All-Conference honors. The women’s team captured its first .500 season in over a decade and both the men’s and women’s teams saw its first ECAC finalists in program history.
This season should prove to be nothing less than another
history-making year as Anderson’s teams return all of its top talent as well as a wealth of newcomers that will provide depth and strength in different areas. The men’s team
Christian
boasts a 20-man roster with 10 newcomers and 10 returning swimmers, while the women feature a 16-member roster,
returning eight and adding eight new members.
“Our women’s team will see added depth in the butterfly,
MARCH
mid-distance and distance freestyle groups to help bolster our relays,” remarked Anderson. “On the men’s side, we look to strengthen our backstroke and butterfly group, as well as improve in the Individual Medley and freestyle events.” Men
Anderson is confident his 2016-17 men’s team will capture its best dual meet record in over a decade. Already two weeks into the
season and the Bobcats have collected four victories against Hampden-Sydney, Barton, Goucher and Stevenson and Anderson does not see the winning trend slowing down any time soon.
“I feel confident that our team will come away with more regular-season wins, we will have more points at the conference championships
and we have a great chance at beating some teams at the CAC Championships this year,” said Anderson.
The Bobcats enter the season behind All-Conference swimmer March as well as other key returners in senior Alek Combs, junior Deion
Yarberough, junior Marquell Proctor and junior Daniel Ryczek. Anderson will also look to freshman Jacob Auerbach to fill in some holes in the backstroke and sprint and mid-distance freestyle events.
March returns as the Bobcat record holder in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.36), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:03.36) and the 50-yard freestyle (21.35). He earned All-Conference honors, NCAA provisional cut-times and made ECAC finals in the breaststroke events and Anderson expects nothing less than another impressive season from March. “I see Christian earning our first Conference Championship title this season,” Anderson said. “He should compete for top spots in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events and potentially the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard IM. Last year, he was right on the bubble to qualify for the NCAA Championships, and this year he should definitely make the leap to qualify for NCAA

Championships.” Combs returns to the pool for one final season as a Bobcat and Anderson expects him to have his best year yet in the butterfly events. “Alek should finish out his career as a four-year conference finalist and point scorer in the butterfly events.” Anderson said.

2016-17 Season Outlook
Anderson will look to Yarberough and Auerbach to be competitive and score points for FSU in the backstroke and sprint freestyle events.
“Both men will compete for relay spots and I expect them to be conference finalists in several events this season,” Anderson said.
Proctor will also add depth to the roster in the
freestyle and butterfly events and Anderson will count on Ryczek to return as a top distance freestyler for the Bobcats.
Anderson is also excited to see junior Zach
Shattuck continue to break Paralympic American records, he currently holds 32 records and continues to progress and improve on his performances from the U.S. Paralympic Trials this summer. Women
The Frostburg State women’s swim team opened
its 2016-17 season with a 4-0, undefeated record and two new-school records in the 400-Medley relay and the 400-meter freestyle relay, adding to the 10 school records the team collected last season.
Anderson’s women’s team returns a wealth of
talent including team record holders junior Macey

Nitchie, sophomore Maddie Weinberger and sophomore Emily Turner.
Last season Nitchie broke five school records in the 50-yard freestyle (24.50), 100-yard freestyle (53.17), 200-yard freestyle (1:54.98),
500-yard freestyle (5:20.68) and the 200-yard medley relay (1:53.68). Anderson will count on Nitchie to continue to be one of the Bobcat’s top-freestylers and believes she will have her best season yet. “Nitchie will be competitive for Conference Championship titles, she will continue to improve in each of her individual events and I can see her earning some NCAA provisional cuts this season,” Anderson said.
Weinberger returns as the team’s top-breaststroker and currently holds team records in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.36), 200-yard
breaststroke (2:25.93) and the 100-yard IM (1:04.49). Along with Nitchie, Anderson believes Weinberger will be a top-competitor for a Conference Championship title in the breaststroke and IM events. He expects her to continue to lower her records and qualify for an NCAA provisional cut time.
Turner, the Bobcats current record-holder in the 50-yard backstroke, will continue to improve and place higher at the Conference
Championships. Anderson will rely on Turner as an important piece of the Bobcat relay teams as well as a point-scorer throughout the season. In the sprint and mid-distance freestyle and butterfly events, Anderson will look to newcomers Elizabeth Meyers and Rebecca Marsh to step-in and contribute as point-scorers as well as compete for relay spots throughout the season. In the mid-distance and distance freestyle events Anderson expects freshman Valerie Yoder and senior Sydney Fazenbaker to be key contributors during the regular season as well as compete for spots in the “A” final of the Conference Championship in those events.

as a team to win close races,” Anderson remarked. “If the first two weeks are any indication of how the season is going to be, I have full confidence that this will be our best year yet.”

Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
