GUY ROBERTSON

Known as one of the top coaches on the east coast, Guy Robertson enters his tenth season at the helm of the Frostburg baseball program in 2017 as the program’s second-winningest coach. Robertson has not had a losing season in his time with the Bobcats and owns the second highest winning percentage (.662) in school history, following a 30-14 season in 2016. Frostburg made the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season and ended the year as the only team in the conference to reach the 30-win mark. The Bobcats had a league-high 13 conference wins and made an appearance in the 2016 CAC Championship game. Frostburg began the 2016 season with five straight victories and led the conference in hits (461), home runs (43) and strikeouts (341). Robertson coached a team that earned several individual accolades in 2016, including Nick Huff, who earned Hero Sports D3Baseball All-American honors after setting the single-season Frostburg and CAC record for saves with 12. Zach Keeler was honored as an academic All-American for the second time in 2016, making him the first male athlete in Frostburg history to earn two Academic All-American honors.

to new heights during a record-setting season in 2015. He now boasts 255 wins during his tenure at Frostburg. His Bobcat squads have advanced to the conference tournament in each of his nine seasons with three NCAA Tournament appearances. The Bobcats finished the 2015 season ranked second in the country in wins (43) and in both major national polls (ABCA & D3baseball. com). The win total eclipsed Frostburg’s school record by eight victories and set the Capital CAC record as well. Frostburg opened the 2015 season 12-0, tossed Division III’s first no-hitter, and captured both the CAC regular-season and tournament titles. Following the tournament crown, FSU posted four wins en route to its first-ever NCAA Mideast Regional Championship and the Bobcats collected two wins in their first-ever appearance in the NCAA World Series. In 2015, four of his players earned All-American status, while Robertson was named the ABCA South Region Coach of the Year, D3baseball.com South Region Coach of the Year, ECAC South Coach of the Year and the CAC Coach of the Year. 2017 BOBCAT BASEBALL in the CAC since FSU joined in 2011, eight All-Americans, a draft pick with MLB’s Atlanta Braves and a 2011 NCAA Tournament appearance. Robertson guided the Bobcats to 28-13 record and an 11-5 slate in the CAC in 2014. Frostburg made its fourth-straight appearance in the CAC tournament while six Bobcats earned a spot on the All-CAC teams. Frostburg State finished 25-15 overall with an appearance in the CAC Tournament in 2013. home runs (21), triples (18), finished third in walks (162) and was fourth in stolen bases. In 2011, FSU went 28-15 overall and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007, after earning the No. 2 seed and knocking off the top-seeded Salisbury Sea Gulls in the semifinal round. For the second-consecutive season, Robertson earned conference Coach of the Year honors. Over his first three years at the helm, Robertson guided the Bobcats to 79 wins, including a 45-11 mark in the AMCC. In 2010, Frostburg posted a 32-13 overall record and won the AMCC regular season championship, while Robertson was crowned AMCC Coach of the Year. In ’09, Robertson led Frostburg to the ECAC South Region Championship and 25 overall wins. In his first season, Robertson guided Frostburg to 22 wins and the program’s 11th-consecutive trip to the AMCC Tournament. Robertson arrived at Frostburg after serving as the Director of Recruiting for the Baseball Factory in Columbia, Md. Robertson served as the head coach at NCAA Division I Coppin State from 2002 through 2006. Prior to CSU, he served as the head coach for the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plains Collegiate Summer League and the St. Cloud River Bats of the Northwoods Collegiate Summer League. Robertson has also served as an assistant coach for both Towson and Georgetown Universities. A native of Westminster, Md., Robertson played four years of baseball at Elon where he earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management in 1999. He later earned his masters of science in physical education and exercise science from McDaniel in December of 2003.

Tim Miller arrives at Frostburg for his first season as the top assistant coach in the fall of 2016. Miller’s primary duties will be to work with the Bobcat pitching staff and assist in all recruiting endeavors.

John Buerkle enters his first season as a graduate assistant coach for the Frostburg State baseball program in the fall of 2016. Buerkle will work with the Bobcat hitters, outfielders and assist in recruiting efforts.

Miller comes to Frostburg after spending a season with the Fayetteville SwampDogs of the Coastal Plain League.

Buerkle, who brings an extensive baseball pedigree as a player and coach, recently spent time as a student assistant with Pitt-Greensburg in 2016. He assisted a team that had eight all-conference players and collected the most conference wins (13) in history.

Miller served as the pitching coach at the University of Pitt-Greensburg in 2015-16, where the team saw unprecedented levels of success. The team set a school record for wins (24) in 2015 and conference wins (13) in 2016. Miller coached all-conference pitchers Cam Smith, Adam Dodson and Brandon Rowland. Under the direction of Miller, pitchers at Pitt-Greensburg set or tied 14 different school pitching records.

As a player at Pitt-Greensburg, Buerkle recorded the highest career fielding percentage (.989) in school history and won the 2015 AMCC All-Sportsmanship Award. Buerkle also earned All-Region honors in 2013 at the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) South Campus.

Miller spent three years as a pitching coach at South Park High School (Pa.) from 2011-13. With a 48-17 record over a three-year span, South Park became the first school to win a district title with a 24-0 record.

Buerkle has logged over 200 volunteer hours at baseball camps and clinics around the region. He graduated from Pitt-Greensburg in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in political science.

Miller spent two years as the pitching coach at Cannon-McMillian High School (Pa.) in 2007-08. While there, the team captured its only title in school history with a victory in the PIAA 4A State Championship game in 2008.

2017 BOBCAT BASEBALL With the start of the 2017 season just around the corner, head coach Guy Robertson and the Bobcat baseball team will look to continue the winning tradition of the program this season. The Frostburg baseball program provided plenty of excitement in 2016 with 30 victories, the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) regular season title and an at-large bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

and boasts a 255-130 (.622) overall record, which includes 73 victories in the past two seasons.

Tim Miller joins the Bobcat coaching staff for his first season as the team’s pitching coach. Miller, who graduated from Washington & Jefferson in 2011, spent last season as the pitching coach at the University of Pitt-Greensburg.

Frostburg won a slew of close games in 2016 and finished the season with the most victories (30) and conference wins (13) in the CAC. The at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament was the first in program history.

John Buerkle steps in for his first season as the team’s Graduate Assistant. Buerkle was a student assistant at Pitt-Greensburg last season. He recorded the Pitt-Greensburg school-record for the highest career fielding percentage (.989).

Perhaps the most heralded returner on the Bobcat roster is junior Greg Schneider. Schneider spent the majority of 2016 as a pitcher, but Robertson and the staff look to return him to his “super-utility” role he played two seasons ago, where he earned 2015 D3baseball.com All-America honors. Schneider had 11 hits and 10 RBI in 43 at-bats in 2016.

Robertson is happy, yet cautiously optimistic, with the progression and development of his squad in the preseason.

Bennett Schiltz is in his second year as an assistant coach. Schiltz was a member of the 2015 Frostburg baseball team that collected a school-record 43 wins, won the 2015 CAC Championship, and made the program’s first and only appearance in the NCAA World Series.

“I know that we had a good fall,” Robertson said. “We have a group that is very committed, very driven and motivated to be successful.” Frostburg returns five position players and nine on the mound, but also brings in a plethora of new talent that will look to contribute immediately. “We think we brought in a really good mix of new talent to come in with what we have returning,” Robertson said. Robertson hopes that the new additions can help fill the void left by the graduation of 12 seniors. Frostburg also returns three players that received all-conference honors from the CAC a season ago, and Robertson expects those returners to take on a familiar role. “I don’t anticipate the guys that are coming back to play a different role than they did last year,” Robertson said.

2017 SEASON PREVIEW

The Bobcats were one of the top power-hitting teams in the conference a year ago, amassing 43 home runs and 461 hits. Frostburg also finished second in the CAC in triples (13), runs (334) and RBI (295).

The 2017 schedule features 40 games, six games against 2016 NCAA Tournament teams and six games in Fayetteville, N.C. Frostburg opens the 2017 season with a doubleheader at Roanoke on Saturday, February 11 at 12:00 p.m. The Bobcats will play 15 home games, beginning with a doubleheader on March 25 against Penn State Harrisburg. COACHING STAFF Robertson, whose Bobcats are receiving votes in the 2017 D3baseball.com preseason poll, is in his tenth season at the helm of the Bobcat baseball program. He has not had a losing season in his tenure

CATCHERS Senior Cody Harman returns as the Bobcats most experienced catcher. Harman started 40 games in 2016 and notched a .279 batting average and 19 RBI. Junior Kyle Burger, a Fairfax, Va. native, will provide a potent left-handed bat from the catcher position. Senior Rob Wetherbee and freshman Brady Ward will also compete for time behind the plate in 2017. INFIELDERS Senior JT Tipton enters the 2017 season just one start shy of 100 for his career. Tipton has been a stalwart in the Bobcat infield, accounting for 14 starts his freshman season, 41 starts as a sophomore and 44 starts last year. He hit .248 last season with seven doubles and 18 RBI, but the slick-fielding senior excelled on the defensive end, posting a .964 fielding percentage. Headlining the list of newcomers in the infield are juniors Logan Corrigan, Matt Bougourd, Matt Jeffery, Patrick Bosley and Jesse Lee. Corrigan, a left-handed hitter and pitcher, will see some time on the mound this season for the Bobcats. The Bobcats also bring in two new underclassmen to the infield in freshmen Nick Bass and Devin Griffith. OUTFIELDERS Senior Devin Bell is among the most noteworthy returners in 2017. Bell was a 2016 All-CAC first team selection and hit a conference high 13 home runs in

Senior Brad Garrant returns after earning All-CAC second team honors in 2016. Garrant started in all 43 games he played in and hit .325 with five home runs and 35 RBI. Senior Micah Headd and junior Evan Colon also return after appearing in a combined 23 games for the Bobcats in 2016. Junior Colton Sivic and freshman Myles Lockridge will compete for playing time and add depth in the outfield this season. PITCHERS Senior Ryan Callahan posted a 4-2 record with a 3.63 ERA in seven starts. The left-hander struck out 31 batters and held opponents to a .212 batting average. Fellow senior Connor Gorman looks to develop and find a more consistent role this season after he made four appearances and one start in 2016. Schneider was one of the team’s most dependable pitchers in 2016, where he went 6-2 with a 3.49 ERA in 11 appearances (10 starts). Schneider, who was named a 2017 D3baseball.com Preseason All-America selection, led the CAC in strikeouts (91) and strikeouts per nine innings (12.22). Junior Lane Ward threw the third most innings (49.0) of any Bobcat pitcher in 2016. He finished the year with a 4-2 record and 39 strikeouts. Junior Tyler Hoffman looks to take a step forward in 2017, in terms of both numbers and outings. Hoffman appeared in seven games in 2016 and struck out five. Juniors Daniel Richardson and Garrett Wiles will look to add stability to the Bobcat pitching staff in 2017. The juniors appeared in a combined 16 games and had 21 strikeouts.
