GUY ROBERTSON

Known as one of the top coaches on the east coast, Guy Robertson enters his eleventh season at the helm of the Frostburg baseball program in 2018 as the program’s second-winningest coach. Robertson enters the 2018 season with a 272149 (.646) overall record through 10 seasons, including an impressive 90-42 (.681) mark over the last three seasons. The Bobcats amassed 17 wins in 2017 and boasted five all-conference selections. With 103 strikeouts in 2017, pitcher Greg Schneider set the program record for career strikeouts (292) on his way to his second straight All-CAC First Team honor. JT Tipton, Brad Garrant, Matt Bougourd and Kyle Burger were also named All-CAC Second Team selections in 2017. Under the tutelage of Robertson, Frostburg has notched a total of 42 All-CAC honorees, 63 CAC All-Academic selections, eight All-Americans since 2011 and claimed a pair of conference championships. Frostburg posted a 30-14 season in 2016 and made the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season, ending the year as the only team in the conference to reach the 30win mark. The Bobcats had a league-high 13 conference wins and made an appearance in the 2016 CAC Championship game. Frostburg began the 2016 season with five straight victories and led the conference in hits (461), home runs (43) and strikeouts (341).

Nick Huff, who earned Hero Sports D3Baseball All-American honors after setting the single-season Frostburg and CAC record for saves with 12. Zach Keeler was honored as an academic All-American for the second time in 2016, making him the first male athlete in Frostburg history to earn two Academic All-American honors. Robertson pushed his Bobcat baseball program to new heights during a record-setting season in 2015. His Bobcat squads have advanced to the conference tournament in each of his nine seasons with three NCAA Tournament appearances. The Bobcats finished the 2015 season ranked second in the country in wins (43) and in both major national polls (ABCA & D3baseball.com). The win total eclipsed Frostburg’s school record by eight victories and set the CAC record as well. Frostburg opened the 2015 season 12-0, tossed Division III’s first no-hitter, and captured both the CAC regular-season and tournament titles. Following the tournament crown, FSU posted four wins en route to its first-ever NCAA Mideast Regional Championship and the Bobcats collected two wins in their first-ever appearance in the NCAA World Series. In 2015, four of his players earned All-American status, while Robertson was named the ABCA South Region Coach of the Year, D3baseball.com South Region Coach of the Year, ECAC South Coach of the Year and the CAC Coach of the Year.

Robertson’s coaching resume at Frostburg not only shows 255 overall wins, but 68 victories in the CAC since FSU joined in 2011, eight All-Americans, a draft pick with MLB’s Atlanta Braves and a 2011 NCAA Tournament appearance.

Robertson guided the Bobcats to 28-13 record and an 11-5 slate in the CAC in 2014. Frostburg State finished 25-15 overall with an appearance in the CAC Tournament in 2013. Junior Kevin Kean became FSU’s third All-American since Robertson’s arrival and he helped the Bobcats lead the CAC in doubles (104), home runs (20), scoring (7.3 runs per game), slugging percentage (.457) and triples (.40). In 2012, the Bobcats finished 22-20 overall, 10-8 in the CAC and earned the third seed in the league tournament. Frostburg led the league in home runs (21), triples (18), finished third in walks (162) and was fourth in stolen bases. In 2011, FSU went 28-15 overall and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007, after earning the No. 2 seed and knocking off the top-seeded Salisbury Sea Gulls in the semifinal round. For the second-consecutive season, Robertson earned conference Coach of the Year honors. Senior Greg Ross was named the CAC Player of the Year and First Team selection, while the Bobcats placed four other players on the AllCAC Teams. Ross was also named to the ABCA All-America First Team, D3baseball.com All-America Second Team, as well as ABCA Mid-Atlantic Pitcher of the Year and First Team selection. Greene was named to the Mid-Atlantic Third Team and was named an ECAC South All-Star.

Following the 2011 season, Ross was drafted in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Atlanta Braves and has spent the last five seasons in the Braves farm system. Ross finished the 2014 season with the AA Mississippi Braves. As a team, the Bobcats finished in the top half of the CAC in nearly every statistical category. In 2010, Frostburg posted a 32-13 overall record, the second most wins in a season at the time and won the AMCC regular season championship. Robertson was crowned AMCC Coach of the Year and Frostburg set seven single-season school records. Matt Greene was selected as a D3baseball.com Second Team All-American. In ’09, Robertson led Frostburg to the ECAC South Region Championship and 25 overall wins. In his first season, Robertson guided Frostburg to 22 wins and the program’s 11th-consecutive trip to the AMCC Tournament. Robertson arrived at Frostburg after serving as the Director of Recruiting for the Baseball Factory in Columbia, Md. from July 2006 to September 2007. While there, he helped place kids with colleges and universities all across the country at all levels. Robertson served as the head coach at NCAA Division I Coppin State from 2002 through 2006. He is the school’s all-time leader in winning percentage, second all-time in both CSU wins (64) and MEAC wins (30). He also holds the school record for victories in a single-season (21). In 2005, he was selected as the MEAC Coach of the Year after posting a 10-7 league record. Prior to CSU, he served as the head coach for the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plains Collegiate Summer League and the St. Cloud River Bats of the Northwoods Collegiate Summer League. Robertson has also served as an assistant coach for both Towson and Georgetown Universities. A native of Westminster, Md., Robertson played four years of baseball at Elon where he earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management in 1999. He later earned his masters of science in physical education and exercise science from McDaniel in December of 2003.

Tim Miller is in his second year as the top assistant coach for the Frostburg State baseball squad in 2018. Miller continues to work with the Bobcat pitching staff and assists in all recruiting endeavors.

John Buerkle enters his second season as a graduate assistant coach for the Frostburg State baseball team in the 2018 season. Buerkle tutors Bobcat hitters, outfielders and assists in recruiting efforts.

In 2017, FSU pitchers posted 8.48 K/9, good for third in the Capital Athletic Conference. The FSU hurlers also allowed the second-fewest walks (149) in the CAC and finished in the top half of the conference with a team ERA. Junior pitcher Greg Schneider was named All-CAC First Team and D3baseball.com South Region Third Team. Schneider led the conference in strikeouts (103) and set the Frostburg single-season mark for strikeouts per 9 innings (12.58).

In 2017, Buerkle helped the Bobcat hitters finish second in the Capital Athletic Conference in batting average (.319), runs (292), extra base hits (128) and slugging (.455). All three starting outfielders (Brad Garrant, Kyle Burger and Matt Bougourd) were named All-CAC selections at the conclusion of the season.

Miller arrived at Frostburg after spending a season with the Fayetteville SwampDogs of the Coastal Plain League. Miller served as the pitching coach at the University of Pitt-Greensburg in 2015-16, where the team saw unprecedented levels of success. The team set a school record for wins (24) in 2015 and conference wins (13) in 2016. Miller coached all-conference pitchers Cam Smith, Adam Dodson and Brandon Rowland. Under the direction of Miller, pitchers at Pitt-Greensburg set or tied 14 different school pitching records. Miller spent three years as a pitching coach at South Park High School (Pa.) from 2011-13. With a 48-17 record over a three-year span, South Park became the first school to win a district title with a 24-0 record. Miller spent two years as the pitching coach at Cannon-McMillian High School (Pa.) in 2007-08. While there, the team captured its only title in school history with a victory in the PIAA 4A State Championship game in 2008. Miller graduated from Washington & Jefferson in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. A native of South Park, Pa., he currently resides in Frostburg, Md.

As a player at Pitt-Greensburg, Buerkle recorded the highest career fielding percentage (.989) in school history and won the 2015 AMCC AllSportsmanship Award. Buerkle also earned All-Region honors in 2013 at the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) South Campus. Buerkle has logged over 200 volunteer hours at baseball camps and clinics around the region. He graduated from Pitt-Greensburg in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in political science. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Buerkle currently resides in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He is pursuing a master’s degree in business administration from Frostburg State University.

Cody Harman enters his first season as a graduate assistant coach for the Frostburg State baseball program for the 2018 season. Harman will work primary with the Frostburg catchers after spending the last two seasons as the Bobcats’ starting catcher. Harman started 67 games behind the plate in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. The 2016 Bobcat baseball team won 30 games (30-14), took home Capital Athletic Conference regular season crown and was named one of 13 at-large bids for the NCAA playoffs. Harman finished his two-year career at Frostburg as a .300 hitter (71-237) with four doubles, a triple and two home runs. He scored 45 runs, drove in 31 more and swiped 12 bases in 13 attempts. Behind the plate, Harman caught 31 baserunners attempting to steal.

ASSISTANT COACHES

Buerkle spent the 2016 season as a student assistant with Pitt-Greensburg. He assisted a team that had eight all-conference players and collected the most conference wins (13) in history.

As a senior, Harman pitched 24.1 innings and posted a 3-1 record on the mound, including wins over CAC foes Southern Virginia and York (Pa.). Harman is also a graduate assistant for the Frostburg State intramurals and club sports program.

FROSTBURG STATE UNIVERSITY From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

State-of-the art athletic facilities provide the student-athlete with the resources necessary for success. Recent expansion of the weight room and fitness areas and renovation of the Bobcat Hall of Fame room are just some of the improvements completed. Newly implemented renovations and construction of new baseball and football locker rooms include oak lockers, branded dĂŠcor, lounge furniture and modern audio/video equipment. The new athletic training clinic is equipped with brand new Hydroworx warm and cold pools.
