GUY ROBERTSON

Known as one of the top coaches on the east coast, Guy Robertson enters his twelfth season at the helm of the Frostburg baseball program in 2019 as the program’s second-winningest coach. Robertson enters the ‘19 campaign with a 295163 (.644) overall record through 11 seasons, including an impressive 113-56 (.669) mark over the last four seasons. The Bobcats amassed 23 wins in 2018 and made it to the CAC Tournament. The 2018 season featured senior pitcher Greg Schneider making it to his third-straight All-CAC First Team honor and setting Frostburg records in starts (44), innings pitched (291.2), strikeouts per nine innings (11.88) and extending his strikeout record to 385. Outfielder Kyle Burger and designated hitter Logan Corrigan were both named to the All-CAC Second Team, Burger’s second time being honored and Corrigan’s first. Sophomore Mike Livingston saved six games in his first year as a Bobcat, already putting him tied for fifth in the record books. Overall, Frostburg led the conference in strikeouts per nine innings, posting a mark 10.93, in 2018. Under the tutelage of Robertson, Frostburg has notched a total of 43 All-CAC honorees, 63 CAC All-Academic selections, eight All-Americans since 2011, a draft pick with MLB’s Atlanta Braves and claimed a pair of conference championships. Frostburg posted a 30-14 season in 2016 and made the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season, ending the year as the only team in the conference to reach the 30-win mark. The Bobcats had a league-high 13 conference wins and made an appearance in the 2016 CAC Championship game. Frostburg began the 2016 season with five straight victories and led the conference in hits (461), home runs (43) and strikeouts (341).

ican honors after setting the single-season Frostburg and CAC record for saves with 12. Zach Keeler was honored as an academic All-American for the second time in 2016, making him the first male athlete in Frostburg history to earn two Academic All-American honors. Robertson pushed his Bobcat baseball program to new heights during a record-setting season in 2015. His Bobcat squads have advanced to the conference tournament in each of his nine seasons with three NCAA Tournament appearances. The Bobcats finished the 2015 season ranked second in the country in wins (43) and in both major national polls (ABCA & D3baseball.com). The win total eclipsed Frostburg’s school record by eight victories and set the CAC record as well. Frostburg opened the 2015 season 12-0, tossed Division III’s first no-hitter, and captured both the CAC regular-season and tournament titles. Following the tournament crown, FSU posted four wins en route to its first-ever NCAA Mideast Regional Championship and the Bobcats collected two wins in their first-ever appearance in the NCAA World Series. In 2015, four of his players earned All-American status, while Robertson was named the ABCA South Region Coach of the Year, D3baseball.com South Region Coach of the Year, ECAC South Coach of the Year and the CAC Coach of the Year. The Bobcats paced Division III statistically in walks (237), fielding percentage (.975) and home runs (46). Frostburg finished third nationally in both runs (410) and winning percentage (.827), fifth in double plays (48) and hits (568) and sixth in shutouts (7). 2019 BOBCAT BASEBALL tories in the CAC since FSU joined in 2011, eight All-Americans, a draft pick with MLB’s Atlanta Braves and a 2011 NCAA Tournament appearance. Robertson guided the Bobcats to 28-13 record and an 11-5 slate in the CAC in 2014. Frostburg made its fourth-straight appearance in the CAC tournament while six Bobcats earned a spot on the All-CAC teams. The Frostburg pitching staff led the CAC with 285 strikeouts while the Bobcats led the league in batting average (.338), doubles (110), triples (22), extra-base hits (149), and slugging percentage (.478). Frostburg State finished 25-15 overall with an appearance in the CAC Tournament in 2013. Junior Kevin Kean became FSU’s third All-American since Robertson’s arrival and he helped the Bobcats lead the CAC in doubles (104), home runs (20), scoring (7.3 runs per game), slugging percentage (.457) and triples (.40). FSU finished third in the country in doubles per game (2.6), 13th in slugging percentage and 22nd in home runs. On the mound, the Bobcats allowed the fewest walks per nine innings (3.06) in the CAC, while striking out the most batters per nine innings (6.9). In 2012, the Bobcats finished 22-20 overall, 10-8 in the CAC and earned the third seed in the league tournament. Frostburg led the league in home runs (21), triples (18), finished third in walks (162) and was fourth in stolen bases. FSU also struck out the most batters in the league (266). Three seniors were named to the All-CAC teams. In 2011, FSU went 28-15 overall and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007, after earning the No. 2 seed and knocking off the top-seeded Salisbury Sea Gulls in the semifinal round. For the second-consecutive season, Robertson earned conference Coach of the Year honors. Senior Greg Ross was named the CAC Player of the Year and First Team selection, while the Bobcats placed four other players on the All-CAC Teams. Ross was also named to the ABCA All-America First Team, D3baseball.com All-America Second Team, as well as ABCA Mid-Atlantic Pitcher of the Year and First Team selection. Greene was named to the Mid-Atlantic Third Team and was named an ECAC South All-Star. Following the 2011 season, Ross was drafted in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Atlanta Braves and spent seven seasons in the Minor Leagues. As a team, the Bobcats finished in the top half of the CAC in nearly every statistical category. Frostburg hit .291 as a team (third) and had a .417 slugging percentage (second). The Bobcats also had the second best earned run average (3.51), opposing batting average (.256), and strikeouts (301).

Robertson served as the head coach at NCAA Division I Coppin State from 2002 through 2006. He is the school’s all-time leader in winning percentage, second all-time in both CSU wins (64) and MEAC wins (30). He also holds the school record for victories in a single-season (21). In 2005, he was selected as the MEAC Coach of the Year after posting a 10-7 league record. Prior to CSU, he served as the head coach for the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plains Collegiate Summer League and the St. Cloud River Bats of the Northwoods Collegiate Summer League. Robertson has also served as an assistant coach for both Towson and Georgetown Universities. Throughout his coaching career, Robertson has coached several camps and clinics and has served on the NCAA Regional Selection Committee. He coached camps for the University of Maryland, William and Mary, Naval Academy, Roberto Clemente Baseball Camp and has helped with the Baseball Weekly Instructional Series. A native of Westminster, Md., Robertson played four years of baseball at Elon where he earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management in 1999. He later earned his masters of science in physical education and exercise science from McDaniel in December of 2003. He and his wife, the former Lisa Bumgarner, are the proud parents of Alexandra (12) and Gabriella (10).

In 2010, Frostburg posted a 32-13 overall record, the second most wins in a season at the time and won the AMCC regular season championship. Robertson was crowned AMCC Coach of the Year and Frostburg set seven single-season school records. Matt Greene was selected as a D3baseball. com Second Team All-American. In ’09, Robertson led Frostburg to the ECAC South Region Championship and 25 overall wins.

In his first season, Robertson guided Frostburg to 22 wins and the program’s 11th-consecutive trip to the AMCC Tournament. Robertson arrived at Frostburg after serving as the Director of Recruiting for the Baseball Factory in Columbia, Md. from July 2006 to September 2007. While there, he helped place kids with colleges and universities all across the country at all levels.

10 Brett Miller joins the Frostburg State coaching staff for his first season as a graduate assistant in 2018-19. Miller arrives at Frostburg after spending one year at Monmouth University, serving as an assistant baseball coach where he performed a variety of administrative duties, developed individualized practice plans and assisted the team’s hitting coordinator and head coach in the development of effective practice routines. Prior to his stint at Monmouth, Miller worked for two years at The College of New Jersey as the Lions hitting coach and recruiting coordinator. Miller helped lead TCNJ to back-to-back 32 win seasons, two NCAA Tournament appearances (2016, 2017) and a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship in 2017. Miller has coached Matt Curry and Joe Cirillo, who each garnered AllAmerican honors for TCNJ in 2017. In addition, infielder Tommy McCarthy was named the 2018 NJAC Player of the Year. Miller spent two years as an intern with the TCNJ athletic department where he worked various NCAA and NJAC Tournament events. Miller has worked as an instructor with the Dave Gallagher Baseball Academy since 2014 and served as the operations coordinator for the academy from May 2014-February 2015. As the head coach of the Allentown American senior legion team he coached his squad to 58 wins and a pair of district final appearances. A two-time CAC All-Academic selection, Miller graduated from York (Pa.) in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management. He was a member of the Spartan baseball team as an outfielder.

Troy Hervey is entering his first season as an assistant coach for the Frostburg State baseball team in 2019. He has been brought on to work with the Bobcat pitching staff. Prior to joining the Bobcat coaching staff, Hervey was the Head of Baseball for the last three summers at Camp Winadu in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. While with the summer camp, he coached and evaluated over 250 kids between the ages of 7-15 in all aspects of baseball. Hervey also organized two 12-team leagues, created coaching plans for individual kids that received private instruction and maintained five different ballfields. Hervey acted as a volunteer assistant coach for Salem International University, located in Salem, West Virginia, from September 2015 to May 2017. He acted as the full-time pitching coach, creating charts used for scouting to better the pitching staff. While he was with Salem International, every pitching statistical category improved after his first season of coaching and the pitching staff gained an average of six miles per hour on their fastballs after he was hired. While attending college at Ohio Valley University, Hervey played baseball for four years, was named a team captain and was a G-MAC AllConference Honorable Mention in 2013 for pitching. Hervey earned his Bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2018 from Ohio Valley University.

Cody Harman enters his second season as a graduate assistant coach for the Frostburg State baseball program for the 2019 season. Harman will work primary with the Frostburg catchers after serving as the Bobcats’ starting catcher in the 2016 and 2017 seasons,

Harman

Harman started 67 games behind the plate in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. The 2016 Bobcat baseball team won 30 games (30-14), took home Capital Athletic Conference regular season crown and was named one of 13 at-large bids for the NCAA playoffs.

ASSISTANT COACHES

Harman finished his two-year career at Frostburg as a .300 hitter (71-237) with four doubles, a triple and two home runs. He scored 45 runs, drove in 31 more and swiped 12 bases in 13 attempts. Behind the plate, Harman caught 31 baserunners attempting to steal. As a senior, Harman pitched 24.1 innings and posted a 3-1 record on the mound, including wins over CAC foes Southern Virginia and York (Pa.). Harman is also a graduate assistant for the Frostburg State intramurals and club sports program.

2019 BOBCAT BASEBALL The Frostburg State baseball team will look for a 2019 Capital Athletic Conference Championship to propel the Bobcats into the Division II ranks and head coach Guy Robertson has the necessary pieces to leave the league where it has been several times last several years; at the top. Although the Bobcats graduated 11 seniors from last spring, Robertson is excited to see what his returners and his new players can do on the field. “This group has a different feel. This team has a sense of who they are, and they’re a more determined group. We don’t have a superstar-type, but what we do have is a lot of guys who understand their role and have the ability to play up, which has me excited,” Robertson said. “We have to be able to hit one-throughnine in the lineup and whoever we plug in will have to pick up the reins. Same thing with our starters and relievers, we’ll have to pass the ball around and feel good about what we’re doing and I think this group has the capability of doing just that.” The Bobcats return seven seniors from last year’s 23-14 team that posted upsets of No. 1 SUNY Cortland (8-5) and No. 13 Shenandoah (7-3) and started the spring with 11 wins in their first 12 contests. FSU was picked to finish fourth in the 2019 CAC Baseball Preseason Poll on February 6.

“We have a lot of young guys that can do a lot of different things. It’s nice to see it start to come together over the last week to 10 days, kicking the rust off from a long break and getting back in the swing of things and seeing the guys get excited,” Robertson said of his squad. “The energy has remained really high and the attention to detail has remained really high, and that’s been one of the things that

impress me the most.” Below is a position by position preview of the 2019 Bobcat baseball squad: COACHING STAFF Robertson enters his 12th season of leading the Bobcats, boasting a 295-163 overall record. He has turned the Bobcat baseball program into one of the best in the region with 43 All-CAC selections, 63 CAC All-Academic selections, eight All-American selections and a pair of conference championships since 2011. Cody Harman, a former catcher for the Bobcats, is the only assistant coach that is returning from last season’s squad, as he enters his second season under Robertson. Troy Hervey and Brett Miller are both entering their first year as assistant coaches for Frostburg. PITCHING STAFF There will be some turnover in the starting rotation from last year, as Greg Schneider, the ace of the Bobcat staff for the past four years, graduated. Two of the three starting pitchers entering this season are new to the club and the third was the anchor of the Bobcats bullpen last year. However, the coaching staff isn’t worried about the three new pitchers that are scheduled to toe the rubber in the first inning this season. Junior Mike Livingston spent his first year with the Bobcats in the backend of the bullpen, leading the team with 15 relief appearances and six saves, which ranked second in the CAC last season. This

season, he’ll be making an adjustment to the starting rotation and bringing his closer’s mentality with him. “Livingston’s a guy that is built for the moment, he doesn’t get too high and he doesn’t get too low,” Robertson explained. “He just has the right mentality on the mound where he will compete and battle until there’s nothing left in his tank.” Transfer students Caleb Smith and Colby Lee will join Livingston in the rotation, and Coach Robertson is happy about what he sees from them early on. “I’m super excited about what they bring to the table and what they’ve done. I expect them to get the ball a lot, they have worked extremely hard and are deserving of this opportunity.” Behind the rotation, the Bobcats have a bullpen led by returning senior Dan Ryczek. He’ll be looked at as a leader not just in the bullpen, but on the entire team. “Ryczek has been here for three years and has seen a lot of good things and has seen some bad things,” Robertson said. “I hope that he’s a guy that has some perspective on the positives and the negatives and can help the pitchers understand what’s going on and how to go about their business.” Ryczek will be used as a middle reliever with the chance to make a few starts if the need arises. Two other arms that Robertson is looking forward to bringing out of the ‘pen are the arms of Chris Roosevelt and Franco Velasquez, both junior transfers. “Roosevelt is super athletic, I’m hoping that he can anchor the

2019 BOBCAT BASEBALL get into the playoffs and we got in. It’s tough, there’s a lot of good teams and a lot of good players, you just have to be prepared every day. What we have leading up to the CAC schedule is nice because I think it will help prepare us for that.” The CAC is regarded as one of the best baseball conferences in Division III and this year is no different, as Christopher Newport and Salisbury are both listed in the Top 25 Poll, No. 13 and No. 22, respectively. INFIELDERS The offense and the infield will be led by senior third baseman Nick Fuhrmann and senior catcher Jason Paredes. Last season, Fuhrmann posted a .299 average, collecting 35 hits, 27 RBI and a team-leading four home runs. The third baseman appeared in 33 games, starting 31 of them, and his hits, RBI, total bases (55), runs (23), and slugging percentage (.470) all were among the top-five on the team. Paredes hit .277 last season, scored 17 runs, hit two homers and drove in 10 RBI. “Our seniors Furhmann and Paredes will be relied on to keep the guys together and connect the past to the future,” Robertson said of his only two senior position players. “Both those guys do a really good job of taking that leadership role and keeping guys focused on the task at hand, but also know how to keep it light as well.”

D’Amico battled some injuries, but still managed to post a .286 average and a .500 on-base percentage in his first season at FSU. Clegg played in 27 games, started 13, and wreaked havoc on the base paths, scoring 13 times and stealing five bases in five attempts.

Frostburg begins the 2019 campaign on Friday, February 15 at 12:00 p.m. against Rutgers-Newark. The game will take place at J.P. Riddle Stadium in Fayetteville, N.C., home of the Coastal Plain League’s Fayetteville SwampDogs. The Bobcats are scheduled to return to home to Bob Wells Field on Monday, March 18 when they take on Pitt-Greensburg. FROSTBURG STATE UNIVERSITY From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

State-of-the art athletic facilities provide the student-athlete with the resources necessary for success. Recent expansion of the weight room and fitness areas and renovation of the Bobcat Hall of Fame room are just some of the improvements completed. Newly implemented renovations and construction of new baseball and football locker rooms include oak lockers, branded dĂŠcor, lounge furniture and modern audio/video equipment. The new athletic training clinic is equipped with brand new Hydroworx warm and cold pools.
