2019 Season Preview The 2019 edition of the Frostburg State women’s lacrosse team features a young roster eager to prove itself in FSU’s final season in the Capital Athletic Conference.

[ MORGAN CAVEY ]

Head coach Hayley Whear’s roster includes a pair of seniors, one junior, nine sophomores and nine first-years. The Bobcats are looking to improve on a five-win campaign in 2018 that included a tie and three other matchups that were one-goal games in the second half. “Goals are to build confidence as we move through in all aspects of the field,” said Whear. “Individually I want them to grow confidence and build up their own self-esteem as they move on and find their niche and where they fit into this program.” The Bobcats will turn to seniors Morgan Cavey and Abigail McClure and junior Molly Biggers to provide on-field leadership in 2019. “The seniors’ leadership in the offseason has helped prepare the rookies and underclassmen to achieve our goals this spring,” said Whear. “Being their last season, they are more motivated than ever to finish strong in the CAC.” Frostburg returns a nine-player sophomore class that had an opportunity to contribute immediately last season. “Last year was your first year to find yourself out there and get to know how to play and catch up to the speed of college lacrosse,” said Whear. “Last year we gave them a little bit of leeway, this year they’re seasoned players and our expectations are twice as high. They know that and they have stepped up to the occasion.” Whear welcomes another nine-player class of first-year players that are expected to contribute in the 2019 season. “I think that they’re going to play a bigger role than they might expect to,” said Whear. “That’s going to come with experience and trying to gain confidence as they move through. They are ready to take that step and they will continue to grow as the season goes on.” On the Attack Offensively, the Bobcats are led by one of the most prolific scorers in the CAC and FSU history in Morgan Cavey. Last spring, she led the CAC with 4.25 points per game and her 55 goals were the second-most in Frostburg State women’s lacrosse history. “Morgan’s just a natural player,” said Whear. “She has a lacrosse IQ that’s extremely high and she gets it. She knows what she wants to do two plays in front of what we’re on. Being able to see that and know that so far in advance has helped her progress through the years.” Sophomore Stephanie King tallied 15 goals and a team-best 17 assists last spring “Those returners stepped up last year when we needed them to and this year again those expectations are there,” said Whear. “Steph’s been doing a huge job at practice trying to figure out these new players and how she and Morgan are going to work with them on the attacking end.”

2019 Season Preview Sophomore Wynnanne Walters and first-year Shelby Brunett are expected to contribute in the offensive third. In the Middle The Bobcats feature a revamped midfield unit with even more options at draw control. That group includes Morgan Cavey, Summer Cavey, sophomore Lindsay Kohlmann and Biggers. “This year [the draw control unit] is bigger than last year,” said Whear. “Last year we had three that were straight middies and it was difficult to expect their legs to run all game. The draw is such an important part of our game that to put that expectation on just three people is really hard.” Biggers transitions to the midfield after finishing second among returners in goals (26) and draw controls (35) last spring. “[Biggers] has shown from moving from attack to midfield that we have to be flexible as a team,” said Whear. “We need to find our strengths and push ourselves out of our comfort zones for the betterment of the team.” Sophomore Summer Cavey led Frostburg and finished seventh in the CAC with 63 draw controls and finished second on the roster with 12 caused turnovers. She ranks second among returners with 33 points in her debut season for the Bobcats. “Summer is a workhorse in the midfield, she continually fights for a full 60 minutes every game,” said Whear. “She leads by example on the field and is one of our most reliable players.” First-years Mackenzie Cramer and Bridget Weiss look to round out the midfield group. Getting Defensive McClure returns between the pipes after a dozen starts and 81 saves in 2018. “Leadership is important in general in a goalie,” said Whear. “They see everything from their perspective. They’re the only ones on the field that have that perspective out there and to be able to communicate that and have the defense listen to you and understand so their defensive unit can work together.” Defensively, the Bobcats must replace four contributors from last year’s squad. Sophomore Sam Coffey looks to lead that unit includes sophomore Teresa Stabler, first-year Emily Chick and a slew of newcomers. “Our new defensemen have that energy and drive to really want to be here. Abby’s leadership back there will help everyone get on the same page.”

[ ABIGAIL MCCLURE ]

Schedule Notes The CAC looks to be as competitive as ever with three teams ranked in the preseason IWLCA Top 10. In addition to a grueling conference slate, the Bobcats have non-conference schedule that includes five opponents that were finalists in their respective conferences last year. “I like to play more competitive games throughout,” said Whear. “We try to schedule good teams that we know will be competitive games. A lot of the games we’ve played before and we’ve been on the losing end them so this year we’re expecting to flip some of those.” Frostburg women’s lacrosse will travel to Hilton Head, S.C. for a pair of games against Centre and Hope during spring break. The Bobcats will host eight contests at Bobcat Stadium, which features new turf and a new video scoreboard for the 2019 campaign. With the exit of Marymount (Va.) and Wesley from the CAC, all seven remaining teams will qualify for the conference’s postseason tournament.

About Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all

situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
