E D I TOR’S NOT E FRV Bali – IT TAKES YOU PLACES

The weather has been beautiful lately on the island. Blue skies abound, which was perfect for another Bali high season to roll through town. The Arturro Summer Party was a big hit and well attended at the Alila Seminyak on August 18, which FRV was honoured to be part of again this year. You can see the report inside. Ku De Ta’s White Party and the Pacha Festival Bali were the other highlights of a very busy Indonesian Independence weekend at the peak of the season. It seems high seasons come and go way too quickly nowadays but this one was more than memorable. The new Bali continues to grow fast with new spots opening and closing as fast as lily pads on a golden Balinese morning, but some are defintely here to stay. One notable place of uncontrollable speed in development is Canggu. It’s hard to fathom how fast that area has grown in the past

two years. And for many, Canggu is the only place they have ever known in Bali. There now seems to be a grand disconnect from the north part of southern Bali to the old Kuta/Seminyak area and it makes one wonder what will be next. Just like the new information age things are changing so fast that no one has a clue as to what will come next. On one side this is exciting, on the other daunting. But here we are trying to keep up with it all with another edition of FRV. Inside this edition, we once again feature more outstanding articles on dining, accommodation, fashion and travel. We check to see what’s new with the Sunday Brunch options around the island and let me assure you there are some excellent ones out there. Speaking of Canggu, Ji Restaurant is sitting right on top of the action there on Batu Bolong and offering great panaramic views and

Japanese dining. We visit two new, outstanding restaurants, Spice Seminyak and out in Gianyar, Genius Cafe. We have a special offer for FRV readers at Genius too - check inside. There is also plenty of travel too including getaways just near home right here in Bali, with a trip around the central mountain area, over to East Java and then to Gili Air. We also sail on the Ombak Putih from Flores back to Bali and visit Yunnan Province, China for a stimulating visit to a foreign musician based there, amongst many other journeys and visitations around the region. We hope you will enjoy reading through this edition of FRV Bali magazine. If you have any comments or would like any more editions of FRV please let us know and direct your messages to editor@frvbali.com

Bits & Pieces SOM CHAI BAR AND RESTAURANT Som Chai, located on Jalan Raya Kerobokan, Seminyak, is the latest destination restaurant from Will Meyrick and his Sarong Group offering sophisticated and artfully themed dining and drinking with a Thai influence. It will open its doors on September 10. Enjoy fine dining in a ‘secret’ cavern of ballroom proportions and a bar that hosts nocturnal adventures set to the awesome beats of live DJs. Som Chai Eat presents Thai cuisine with a menu derived from a diverse range of regional cooking styles, encompassing the very essence of excellent Thai food and pays homage to an ancient, forgotten era: the era of the first Kings of Siam. To accompany Som Cahi Eats, Som Cahi Drink allows the night to unfold with performance artistes, live music and resident

ULU CLIFFHOUSE TO OPEN SOON Another hot spot in the making is the Ulu Cliffhouse, which is also scheduled to open this September. With breathtaking panoramic views over the Indian Ocean and Uluwatu, the enormous clifftop club will be setting the pace in the Bukit area. It features direct access to the beach, a 25-metre infinity pool, an onsite spa, a boutique store and tantalising food and drink options – from its terraced restaurant to a stunning cliffside bar overlooking the ocean. Created by Shed London and F&B entrepreneurs – Out & Out Hospitality whose operations span Singapore (Operation Dagger, Oxwell & Co) and Bali (KILN

on Petitenget and the new Mandala House), the designled beach club will enhance its natural environment with modern edges, effortless style and a youthful playfulness. “We can’t wait to unveil Ulu Cliffhouse to the community, with the aim of upending the traditional beach club offering in Bali. Beyond cocktails by the beach, Ulu Cliffhouse will have its very own recording studio, a live music programme set to establish the venue as a leading music destination, and a cliffside bar perched on the rocks, offering guests a sundowner experience like no other,” said Jacques Dejardin, Managing Director, Out & Out Hospitality.

DJs invoking a hedonistic sensory exoticism. The venue pays homage to Old Chinatown in Bangkok where cutting edge bars and cafes are opening up under the awnings of the old town, creating new adventures in night time entertainment. Quintessential cocktails, selected artisan beers and classic mixed drinks, along with fine wines are served, and for those looking for light bites to accompany their drinks, signature street food snacks are served at the bar. Som Chai Drink will be open daily from 5.30pm – 1.00am and Som Chai Eat from 6.00pm – 11.00pm. NEW IN BALI

Ayana Launches New Kubu Beach Club Exclusive to In-House Guests. Designed to be a main attraction for beachfront relaxing & dining, Kubu Beach Club is only accessible to in-house guests of Ayana Resort and Spa Bali, Rimba Jimbaran Bali by Ayana and The Villas at Ayana. Tucked away from the stress of daily life, the club is designed to intertwine lazy days in the sun with fun filled memorable moments for all the family. Come dusk, guests will be thrilled by the flawless sunset views on the horizon. To accompany the traditional design, the kitchen serves an eclectic range of simple international dishes and local comfort foods. Menu items range from hearty favourites such as snapper ceviche and charcoal bun cheese burger to traditional Balinese dishes including signature rice dishes as well as the well-loved local favorites ‘Rujak Gula’ seasonal fruits marinated with palm sugar and tamarind, ‘Bakso balung’ an oxtail beef meatball soup and traditional chicken or pork satays. Warm and friendly service goes beyond expectation with a more creative approach that makes guests feel included in the overall experience. The Beach Bar reflects the aesthetic of true Balinese camaraderie, with an endless flow of ice-cold beers, fresh coconut water and vintage Balinese Tiki cocktails and Arak based classic cocktails.

AYANA takes guests back to a more rustic time in Bali’s legendary holiday lifestyle, with the launch of Kubu Beach Club’s 1960s heritage Bali vibe. Located on one of Bali’s last remaining hidden white sand beach coves, and accessible only through AYANA’s 90-hectare estate, Kubu Beach Club’s supreme setting showcases aquamarine waters, dramatic limestone cliffs and intrinsic Balinese architecture inspired by island elements such as shell, wood, bamboo, stone and traditional rooftops made with “lontar” leafs, similar to the island’s classic palm leaf. The club is exquisitely appointed with a contemporary wooden deck, comfortable hammocks, Balinese style lean-to cabanas, and natural whole teakwood loungers.

14

Guests can expect an inside preview into the golden age of Kuta’s bygone era with authentic amenities such as beachside massages performed under the coconut tree using natural coconut oil and a hair-braiding service and temporary tattoos. Thanks to Ayana’s innovative cliff-side inclinator, recently installed to service Kubu Beach Club, guests can choose to experience the invigorating 197-step journey, or a quick 35-second ride up and down Ayana’s inspiring cliff-front terrain. Kubu Beach Club is open every day from 9am – 7pm, with lunch service starting at 11am. Families staying at AYANA are welcome to enjoy a delicious and comforting meal with their children. Small groups are encouraged to plan ahead when booking private dining events and beachfront cocktail parties. With a capacity of up to 80 guests, Kubu Beach Club is the perfect additional to the resort’s already impressive facilities. Book a weekend at the luxury resort and this beach club is all yours for the taking - without busy outside company. FRV www.ayana.com

DELICIOUS BALI FOOD

Ji Restaurant Batu Bolong. Location:

Text:

BALI - CANGGU

DAVID TRAUTS

Ji Restaurant (pronounced Gee and meaning temple in Japanese) is a beautiful space and a surprising dining experience. Focused on Japanese and Southeast Asian cuisine, the multi-leveled restaurant, which is officially called Ji at Bale Sutra 1706 on the lower floors, and Ji Terrace By The Sea upstairs offers much for tourists and locals alike in the now bustling Canggu area. Being part of the Tugu Group, which has had a luxurious hotel, steeped in Indonesian history and local artefacts on Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong for over 20 years, knowledgeable guests would already be aware that they are in for a design treat, but upstairs in the new Ji Terrace they might be surprised to find an lavish array of delicious Japanese dishes conceived by Chef Colin Buchan and his culinary team. After doing a short tour of the downstairs area of Ji at Bale Sutra, including the street facing Front Bar, where guests can try myriad cocktails and a selection of sake, and The Red

16

Room, which is an over 300 year old, reconstructed Chinese temple, now a spacious dining room in tones of red, we headed upstairs to the second floor passing the main bar and other intimate dining spaces and right to the top where you find Ji Terrace By The Sea. The terrace has 180 degree views of the Indian Ocean and Old Man’s Beach, one of Canggu’s favorite surfing and tourist locales. Ji is a bustling hot spot around sunset as tourists and locals arrive for a (Happy Hour) cocktail or two, enjoy the sounds of the guest DJs and sit down for a view of the famous Bali sunset. The two

menus from Bale Sutra and Ji Terrace are available in all parts of the restaurant so there is plenty to choose from. We started with a couple of tasty cocktails, a coconut and Cachaca Coco Sexo (100k) and lemon grass infused vodka, sake and crème de ginger beer mixed, the Cherry Shogu Martini (100k). Obviously having a cocktail in hand is the only way to enjoy a blazing red sunset. After sitting down at the table overlooking the whole spectacle of Canggu Beach and dying embers of another sunset, we chose a selection of Japanese favourites, which promptly

Here’s cheers to another glorious Bali sunset.
