A

s winter is now a fading memory, our thoughts turn to being body conscious. It is part of natural progression of the seasons. Perhaps surprising to some, men are not exempt from this. This is why we decided to publish timely special edition of men’s fashion from around the world. Our cover reflects the trend the human eye is attracted to right now, and impressions to which the heart responds with action. Much of the clothing that men need and like are both function oriented and romance alluring. Finding the perfect balance between the two can be as hard as finding the perfect partner. But do we give up? We never do... I hope that in this issue you can find that element which will complete your wardrobe, or spark the new acquired style with ease in function and your lifestyle. It is all out there and can be found with patience, focus, and intention to match your true personality. Be brave and bold to become who you are through clothing, and rest will follow. COVER STORY

INTRODUCING MARCO CASTELLI by Joyce Darkoh

Marco Castelli is one of the few male models to deserve the status top model; at least when looking at his quick jumpstart and the gigs he’s landed thus far. His profile on models.com tells it all – magazine features in GQ, L’Uomo, D’Scene and multiple campaign shots, not including several magazine covers that he can put on his resume. But that is no reason for him to rest; instead, Marco is working on a different career as a menswear designer and campaign director. During a recent visit in Berlin, we had the opportunity to shoot some of his incredible pieces and have this informative interview with him.

MENSWEAR ISSUE 2016

FSHN: How did you get started in the modeling business? How old were you and who discovered you? MC: I just started modeling five years ago. I was discovered while taking a walk on the Sicilian seaside close to Agrigento. A talent scout from an agency who was spending the week in Sicily noticed me during his last day and asked me if I was available for a show. I said yes, more out of curiosity than for the money he offered me. I had just turned 20, and that was the beginning of a new life, a life completely different from what I knew before. FSHN: What designers did you work for, or which shows have you walked? MC: My first modeling experience was a fashion show for Benetton. When my face became more and more popular I decided to move to Milan and try my luck. After five months, I was selected for the new international campaign for Gianfranco Ferré. After that, I started to collaborate with many other designers, such as Phillip Plein and Corneliani. My last show was during Milan Fashion Week in January where I had the opportunity to wear Ovvo Optics glasses during the show!

FSHN: What was the best experience you have had so far? Which people have you met that you like to remember back? MC: One of the greatest experiences I had was in Miami a few years ago, where I met Calvin Klein. Thanks to his appreciation for me, I realized that I could start a more creative career path. A few weeks later, I met Greg Lotus, one of the most famous photographers, and I've since worked with him several times! FSHN: Who is your favorite designer / brand? MC: I like the style of many designers, but Rick Owens is the one who has inspired me the most in the last years. And also Yoiji Yamamoto, whom I had the opportunity to work with in Tokyo! The super elegance of the early Yves Saint Laurent has always been a source of inspiration, too.

FSHN: Next to modeling you have become the brand ambassador for Ovvo Optics. Tell us how this collaboration started? MC: I got to know Ovvo Optics after a successful casting with a photographer in New York. During the photo shoot, I had the chance to meet the company's owners, Artur and Margareta, and they immediately asked me to collaborate with them to increase the social visibility of their brand. A few weeks later, after some intense days of work, they asked me to become the first official ambassador for their brand. Thanks to my knowledge of the fashion industry, it was easy for me to place such a good and innovative product in the high-end fashion shows. Their unique style combined with an innovative choice of materials makes their glasses the best choice for every fashion lover!

MENSWEAR ISSUE 2016

FSHN: This year you will present your first capsule collection consisting of exclusive menswear pieces. Tell us about the collection, where is it made, what is the inspiration? Who is your client? MC: I am extremely excited about my collection. I consider it my second new beginning since I started modeling. My collection is entirely handcrafted and 100% made in Italy. Everything started when I visited the “Made in Italy” atelier conference back in November 2015. During the event, I had the pleasure of meeting FC, a senior master dressmaker who owns an atelier in Corso Como in Milan. We clicked right away and with my dear friend, Tommaso Madè, a senior brand builder, we decided to merge our strengths and create the collection. My clients are people who are constantly looking for cutting edge clothing, but are not willing to compromise on quality and comfort. I am my own first client, because I designed the collections based on my personal needs in terms of quality and innovation. We provide custom size, unique pieces that can be considered an extension of the wearer's personality and beliefs. Our goal is achieved every time one of our clients is asked where he bought the piece he's wearing and who made it for him.

FSHN: You are traveling a lot. What are you do during your free time? How do you wind down, relax? MC: I know it sounds a little bit odd, but I like traveling during my free time as well. I love to meet new people and cultures; they are my first sources of creativity and inspiration. I love sports, reading books, eating delicious food, meditation and spas. These are the pillars of my personal life that I feel are very connected to my working life, because I put all of myself into living my life my way. In other words, I recharge my battery by exiting my comfort zone, taking new challenges and always trying to go beyond my initial beliefs and perceptions. I think I am a fighter, I always like to go a step further and push myself one step ahead the others and beyond my own limitations. This way, I feel as if I am getting the most out of my life.

FSHN: What are your next plans? MC: This is a question I ask myself every day. I think a good designer should be obsessed by this question in a positive way. Only by looking towards the future can we have the tools to shape our present. For the long term, I see myself continuing to model, since that is my privileged way to meet new people and increase my knowledge about life and fashion. In my wildest dream, I positively contribute to developing a culture of fashion that is accessible and affordable to everyone. I think this is the first step in that direction. Style Quotes

by Famous Men

“Clothes don’t make a man, but clothes have got many a man a good job.” Herbert Harold Vreeland “The man who, as is often said, can get away with wearing a trench coat over his dinner jacket, or an old school tie for a belt, is the one who in fact understands best the rules of proper dress and can bend them to suit his own personality and requirements.” G. Bruce Boyer “I can go all over the world with just three outfits: a blue blazer and gray flannel pants, a gray flannel suit, and black tie.” Pierre Cardin “Clothes and manners do not make the man; but when he is made, they greatly improve his appearance. “ Arthur Ashe “No woman really knows anything about men’s clothes. How could she? After all, she is conditioned to obsolescence, to the principle that things go out of fashion. Well-dressed men know that nothing worth-while is ever outmoded, that a superb tailor’s work is ageless.” Finis Farr “I often take a brand-new suit or hat and throw it up against the wall a few times to get that stiff, square newness out of it.” Fred Astaire

54

“Men’s fashions all start as sports clothes and progress to the great occasions of state. The tailcoat, which started out as a hunting coat, is just finishing such a journey. The tracksuit is just beginning one.” Angus McGill “There’s no such thing as a designer of menswear— it’s only history. The suit around the world is based on the English suit, which began in about 1670.” Hardy Amies “A man must face the world with sprezzatura. It literally means detachment, but a better way to think of it is quiet confidence or low-key style. The most forceful statement is understatement.” Luciano Barbera “Putting on a beautifully designed suit elevates my spirit, extols my sense of self, and helps define me as a man to whom details matter.” Gay Tales “Dressing well is a form of good manners.” Tom Ford

A GAME CHANGER IN MEN'S FASHION

SUITSUPPLY

by Joyce Darkoh

There is no doubt that some of the finest suits are made in England and Italy. But Dutch brand Suitsupply has created an entirely new market in men’s fashion that sets them apart from any other existing boutique retailer. Their combination of the use of only the finest fabrics, European styling, unbeatable in-store service and within an attainable price bracket is a revolutionary approach to men’s fashion and leaves retailers asking “How do they do that?” and customers coming back for more. In a world where off-the-rack suits have invaded the closets of men around the world, Suitsupply introduces a better option, real suiting for real men that really fit. No attention to detail is ever spared and tailoring is done on-site and while-you-wait, allowing everyone to leave with the perfect fit and encouraging relationships to be developed with every new client. Their dedication to craftsmanship is emphasized by the tailors staged in the middle of the store.

Suitsupply was started by Fokke de Jong in 2000 and in 16 years has grown to 900 employees in over 60 stores in Europe, the United States and Asia, in cities such as Milan, London, Zurich, Amsterdam, New York, Toronto Shanghai and Singapore. Bruno Mars, Idris Elba, Tim Gunn and John Travolta are just a few celebrities who have been spotted wearing Suitsupply. “Tailoring always feels very established, we have a more unsystematic approach to it,” says Fokke de Jong, CEO of Suitsupply.

“We are there for people who want to create their own space – not just to fit in, but to find their own fit, and we want to relate to our customers in a natural way and combine product knowledge with personality to create topnotch service.” Their retail stores have in-house tailors who serve as sales reps, suit experts, and stylists. In addition to their retail program, Suitsupply holds a very strong e-commerce presence, allowing the company to bring that same high-quality tailoring and personal service to customers around the world. Suitsupply online offers different style and fabric categories with specific descriptions of the details easy to understand for suit starters. For its upcoming Spring/Summer collection, Suitsupply finds its inspiration in the colorful architecture and professional full-time dandies of the Cuban capital, Havana.

MENSWEAR ISSUE 2016

Havana is an aesthetically unique city, full of beautiful incongruities and anachronism; from the well-worn slate tiles and ornate sculptural designs of Spanish colonial architecture, to immaculately maintained ‘50s American automobiles.

Accordingly, Suitsupply’s new collection reflects that serendipitous mish-mash of influences. Summer-weight cashmere, heavy Irish linens and silks come in sumptuous windowpane plaid and paisley patterns, and are rendered in a color palette that reflects the diverse, centuries-old styles of Havana: from olive green to cherry red to Havana brown, both earth tones and iridescent hues combine to form a perfect amalgam of rustic and decadent influences. Just as Havana finds itself moving quickly into the modern age, so does Suitsupply’s collection incorporation of the label’s trademark mix of historical inspirations with continental tailoring and detailing, a slim but precise fit, and durable, handcrafted construction. Pursuing the future without forgetting the past: the path forward for Havana and beyond—and now, men the world over have the threads to match. DESIGNER INTERVIEW

URBAN HEROES Stella and Alina first met while attending a fashion college in Berlin. Now they have designed their first menswear collection together. Inspired by colorful palettes, their designs full of colors, extravagant patterns and flowing fabrics invite you to escape the dark winter days in Berlin. The collection's name, Urban Heroes, reflects its clientele; the stylish, adventurous man who is open for new experiences in the urban city. FSHN sat down with the designer duo to find out about their collection and inspiration.

FSHN: Who is Urban Heroes designed for? UH: As you can see on the images, there are three very different and, at the same time, very characteristic types of guys. The pattern lines of the looks, as well as colors and materials all have a feminine touch to it to the point that they can be worn by women as well. Each look develops its own individual touch with its wearer. FSHN: How did you start working together and how did it work out? UH: One of the tasks while in school was designing classic men’s dress shirts, and we ended up looking for fabric together. There was one interesting fabric we both loved; it was available in two colors, so it was clear that we both wanted to work with this material (see image). These two shirts were the beginning of our collaboration. A: We harmonized from the beginning and truly supported each other. I sort of see our introduction as our destiny because as a designer, it is very hard to find a compatible partner that wants to share his work. S: Yes, that is true. We have similar perspectives and the same work routine. Alina has a characteristic and unusual pattern line and I appreciate lovely, and lavish details FSHN: What characterizes your designs? S: We both prefer quality fabrics with longevity. Our designs are not seasonal. They are designed for people who love the design and do not follow shortlived fashion trends. Our main priority is a collection of selected pieces that can be worn over a longer period of time. FSHN: What are the challenges in menswear? A: All in all, women are more into fashion than men. Menswear is a very difficult process, but that is exactly what challenges us to design men's clothing. We hope that men will be more fashion conscious, and of course, that our designs meet their expectations.

74

FSHN: Which designer has inspired you? UH: Definitely Dries van Noten. We love his designs, especially his menswear collection, which is extravagant and yet, it is still wearable. He just knows how to mix colors and high quality fabrics. And it's amazing that he refrains from using advertising and campaigns. FSHN: What are your favorite places in Berlin? A: Last summer, I discovered the Volkspark Pankow, a green oasis in the middle of the city but still far away from its hecticness; a place where you can take some time out. S: I love my own backyard; it's surrounded by old ruins. I live right in the city, and still, it is very peaceful to where I even plant herbs and vegetables during spring and summer. FSHN: What are your plans for the future, are you planning your own label? UH: We are not certain yet if we want to launch our own label. There will be a few more collaborations in the future for sure, simply because our teamwork was so much fun and the vibes between us were perfect. We believe in constantly gaining own experiences to broaden our horizon. That also means that we have to travel abroad. Each one of us has plans to travel to different countries and check out local textiles and their traditional manufacturing. Thailand, India and Morocco is definitely on our list. Alina Naomi, 24, born in Berlin, loves Berlin's electro scene and fashion. Stella Lavinia, 25, born in MĂźnster, raised in Spain and in Berlin for the past three years. MONTHLY FASHION COLUMN

ABLY SPEAKING by Joyce Darkoh

ARE MENSWEAR MAGAZINES DEAD? If you are reading this, then you are currently holding the first Menswear issue of FSHN Magazine in your hand. After browsing through the common newsstands lately in search of new printed sources for men`s fashion and styles we came to the conclusion that very little space is given to menswear in form of magazines and articles. And it makes sense, in a way. Women can be everything they want; they can be fabulous, desirable, exciting, successful, and even masculine. Men, however, can be conservative or trendy. Full stop. Let’s be honest here, there are tons of articles and editorials that you can do about women, and it wouldn’t get boring and old. The variation in men’s fashion is quite limited, in comparison; it can be traditional in form of suit wear (and even here versatility is limited), casual or experimental, not to use the word trendy because newly designed features that are introduced on the runway rarely become fashion. Most trends in menswear are rather reinvented or adjusted to today’s use and mainstream. A few years ago, I would have argued that men simply don’t care about fashion and trends as women do. There are tons of magazines filled with womenswear out there, and each of them focus on a specific type of clientele, which is why they can co-exist next to each other. When Condé Nast shuttered Details Magazine last year, it appeared to be the gruesome confirmation that men don’t give a dime about printed men’s fashion magazines, literally.

90

But the truth is, men do care about the way they appear and dress – in a more subtle way than women, though. They appear to be more open for recommendations and advice on combining the limited items they have to create their own style, and I believe that it takes more creativity and sense for fashion than having multiple options of combinations like women do. Men follow trends, and they carefully watch what other fellas wear. I just believe that magazines should provide more DIY guides for fashionable products so men learn the principles of styling. This special issue is our contribution to promoting menswear magazines, and we filled it with fashion and topics we considered to be interesting for both men and women. We don’t expect the guys to change the way they dress, but we intend to show that men and fashion are surely two words that can be used in one sentence by introducing other guys who work in the industry and provide their expertise. I would love to hear your thoughts about this issue and menswear. Do you still read men’s fashion magazines, and why? Email to joyce@fshnmagazine.com (anonymous emails will not be considered) Until next time, Stay FSHNable Joyce

A Blast from the Past: Vintage bags by

Satchel & Page by Joyce Darkoh

The demand for vintage items has been on the rise for quite some time, but only a few companies managed to produce leather items that recreate a nostalgic authenticity. Satchel & Page is a brand that stands out from the rest, not just because of their beautiful bags that put you in a time lapse back to WWII, but also because of the quality. They are promised to last a lifetime. The inspiration behind the Satchel & Page leather collection came from Daniel's grandfather and his map case from WWII, a bag that had witnessed stories of love, courage and resiliency. The leather had aged with character and was is still going strong about 70 years later, which got Daniel thinking, "Why can’t I find products like this now?" This led to a small collection inspired by the great generation of the 1940, including map cases, mailbags, briefcases, Gladstone, and pilot’s bags. Functionality for today’s technology was added, but the original styling of the era remained the same. After a successful Kickstarter launch in 2013 with 599 backers, the company has expanded its variety by adding military and biker inspired leather jackets. Every product of the collection has a story according to Daniel. “Our latest collection was inspired by an old family suitcase that was actually used by my great grandfather when he went through Ellis Island in the early 1900s.” With this particular collection, Satchel & Page focused on durability and functionality for the demanding city environment. It features a modernized suitcase, redesigned Gladstone bag for weekend travel, a briefcase that can be carried as a backpack and a portfolio for light everyday carry.” The quality of each bag is unique, as all their bags are crafted with 6-8 vegetable tanned leather, which is 2-4 times thicker than any other comparable bags on the market and reinforced with solid copper rivets... one good reason why Satchel & Page confidently offers a lifetime warranty on everything they produce. MONTHLY MENSWEAR

Men and Fashion:

the revolutionary change

by Joyce Darkoh

A recent Euromonitor International report has shown that in 2014, the menswear market increased 4.5% to $440 billion while womenswear only increased by 3.7%. These figures are contrary to the fact that men admittedly don’t like shopping. According to Jeremy Lewis, editor of fashion magazine Garmento “The classic male archetype has been pretty misogynistic, sexist and slightly fascist and I think that’s broken down quite a bit over the last 20 years. It makes more sense in a world that is becoming less patriarchal that the male identity would shift to allow for something like fashion or style, once considered feminine and therefore unacceptable, to be adopted.” This month we asked UK influencer Toni Tran, creative head of the blog Fashitect (@fashictect) about his shopping habits, and his opinion on fashion.

FSHN: How important is fashion / “dress to impress” to you? TT: When I first started, I had no clue about fashion. It took a learning process when it came to building confidence with style, but you realise, if you believe in yourself, you will inspire others and gaining respect is key in a fast paced city like London. I've honestly always dressed for myself and not for the opinion of other people, but it's nice to get compliments in person. FSHN: Describe your favorite outfit. TT: I always start with a classic white shirt as my canvas. The textures and neutral tones of the tailored suit will depend on my mood from Navy's to Beige, be-

140

cause you can never go wrong with a nice bespoke and elegant 2 piece suit. If it's cold, a long knee length wool blend coat adds to the winter layered look. A pair of Monkstrap shoes, silver watch and sunglasses should do the trick. FSHN: How much money do you spend on clothes per month in average? TT: Nothing. Not quite the answer you're looking for from a Fashion blogger right? When I do spend, I like to treat myself to a few bespoke suits, designer shoes & bags, and there are some things a price can't put a tag to. Toni Tran, 24, London

INTERVIEW

Jason Lamberth the American designer and furniture maker

FSHN met him in his Berlin Showroom and done an exclusive photoshoot for the Menswear Issue with his wonderful designs. Jason Lamberth has been creating furniture and bespoke environments for private clients since 2001. This residence, completed in 2008, was the first LEED home in the Hamptons to be certified as Platinum. Other collaborations include Steven Spielberg, Tommy Hilfiger, Philippe Starck, Axel Vervoordt, Armani Exchange and the Exhale Spa chain, USA.

BURIED TEAK has been harvested in Indonesia for centuries. The Dutch colonists adopted the practice from the Chinese, who had been burying teak there as far back as the Ming Dynasty. Shipbuilders historically buried massive teak logs in the volcanic earth for fifteen years, thus sealing off potential decay from oxygen and insects as well as, starting the petrification process. Normally, wood takes millennia to turn to stone. In the shorter term,

166

however, silica molecules in the soil gradually replace the decomposing wood molecules, hardening the wood. As this is happening, other minerals in the soil leech out gummy resins and impurities, which makes it easier to work and deepening the color. Since many of Jason’s discoveries were left by spice traders of long ago, some logs have been hardening to a mineral density for as much as 100 years.

MENSWEAR ISSUE 2016

IRONWOOD is one of the most durable hardwood species in existence. It is resistant to fire, insects, bacteria, and fungi. Jason salvages the ironwood flooring from kilometers of old roads that have been weathering the Borneo sun and rain for at least 20 years, resulting in the deepest erosion and best patina. The ironwood truffle stools are made from recycled architectural poles found in abandoned factories and shipyards. Modern wood connoisseurs prize ironwood for its resilience outdoors as well as, its elegance and worn expressiveness when used for fine furniture and indoor flooring. The native Dayak believe Borneo Ironwood has magic power to protect them from bad spirits and wild animals as well as, bring them good luck. While westerners may think that naïve and superstitious, Ironwood is a sequential hermaphrodite, meaning it can change its sex throughout a lifetime that can last over 1,000 years. Perhaps it is this mystical power the Dayak believe animates the wood they use in their architecture, shamanic totems and talismans. Through ceremony, they invite the spirits of their ancestors to embody their ironwood relics and buildings that guide them in all their daily affairs. No doubt, such favorable ceremonies would have been performed on Jason’s ironwood offerings as well.

MODEL INTRODUCING

Gianluca di Sotto by Joyce Darkoh

The name may not sound familiar, but there’s a good chance you have seen images of top model Gianluca di Sotto before. Italian by birth, Gianluca is one of a few iconic models to initiate a beard maniac hype in the fashion industry; and he is still featured in multiple magazines, campaigns as well as spotted in designer presentations during fashion week season. Even though the model pool is swamped by bearded models by now, Gianluca is one that simply stands out. Whether it’s his colorful tattoos that seem to cover most of body, his eyes that constantly seem to flirt with the camera, or his majestic beard that has always maintained a good length - there is something fascinating about him that constantly wants you to stare and discover something new about him.

His career started in Milan, where he was discovered by a model scout, beardless, however. It is not clear how it came about that Gianluca decided to grow a beard; and, considering the fact that his brother has been bearded ever since, it may be a family thing. But his bookings increased with the length of his facial hair. “The best experience I had was doing a global campaign for Marlboro in Los Angeles”, Gianluca says. “I also walked for Philipp Plein during New York Fashion Week; that was an amazing experience, as well.” When asked for his favorite brand or designer, Gianluca says he loves fashion but he prefers to check out new labels that enter the market rather than wearing contemporary brands. His own style can be described as casual and laidback with a twist

178

of sophisticated comfort; a very individual mix of designer clothes and personal belongings. But as laidback as Gianluca di Sotto appears, when he is working, his professional model side drives him to deliver the most satisfying outcome for the client. He loves his job, he says, and there is no thought about what comes after. Traveling is one of the biggest aspects in a top model’s life, and jobs take him around the world a lot. “That is why a strong family that supports you is so import because they give you energy when you return home exhausted and away from familiar people,” he states. And those who have worked with Gianluca know how much important this aspect of his life is – one of his tattoo on his shoulder says "familia." And that says it all.

FOR THE Love OF Beards The full beard is having a renaissance. Again. And, as many times as fashion experts have announced the end of the facial hair era for the next season, beards remain popular worldwide. By now, a whole industry has been formed around this hype offering care products, apparel, and jewelry. Platforms like Face- book and Instagram refl ect only a peek of the actual "beard man" followership that keeps growing on a daily basis. Multiple bloggers have gained attention and fame by demonstrating the growth of their beard, and various style variations that can be worn with it. So, what exactly is so fascinating about beards, mustache and stubble that started a whole social movement?

One reason why many women love beards is because of the masculinity it reflects. Studies have shown that men with facial hair are considered to be more mature and better caregivers than those without. In this study, people were asked to judge the same object, once with a beard and once without, and evaluate with attributes. The person without beard was associated with sociability, cleanliness and health, whereas the same person with a beard was attributed with aggressiveness, dominance and maturity. Knowing that female primates pick their mates based on visual markers, and surely everyone has heard of gender theories, it makes complete sense that men who signal manliness and alpha man attributes to assure strong offspring are favored by most women.

by Joyce Darkoh

But how does a beard affect the man who is wearing one? Having long facial hair goes beyond following a fashion trend. It requires a lot of care on a daily basis starting from combing it in the morning, keeping it trimmed and shiny throughout the day. Studies have shown that shaved men who were equipped with a false beard and asked to judge themselves in the mirror, felt more mature and assertive than before. Looking at guys like Brioni's John O'Shea, social media star Brock O'Hurn, or model Gianluca di Sotto, then it becomes clear that wearing a beard is part of an attitude, a lifestyle that comes along with a view on life and men. It projects a sign of individuality and a touch of dominance over their own assertiveness. Other studies have shown that working men with beards are often attributed with power and competence, even with a better personality. It's no surprise then that some men join the movement in order to man up, or simply live out their love for masculinity and their slight rebellious attitude towards a genderless society. There may be several other reasons for the beard love within society that could be brought up here, but these two psychological proven theories provide little concerns that the facial hair trend will ever die out.

A tackier version of a pomade that tends to have a heavier hold. Obvious but necessary warning: Using this product will NOT make it safe to put your head inside of a kiln. BAXTER CLAY POMADE $20

CREAM

No, not made by a cow - we asked. Hair cream is an almost zero hold conditioning lotion that gives thicker hair types that perfect, “I haven’t taken a shower in two days“ look. Minus the stink. Creams also de-frizz and de-fluff curly, frizzy, coarse hair and, if used sparingly, are good option for guys with fine and thinning hair who don’t want the weight or stress of a pomade. 186

FELLOW BARBER STYLING CREAM $22

MENSWEAR ISSUE 2016

POMADE

This grooming standby is a less icky sounding term for old school hair wax or grease, but just about any (but not every) new-school product labeled this way has updated their formulas to be less sticky. They range from light-medium to light-hard hold and are used for slicking, defining and grouping/chunking anything from wavy to straight hair. The word pomade by itself is pretty generic, so look for helpful words that tell you how strong, shiny, and/or smelly the glop will be on your head.

FELLOW BARBER STRONG POMADE $22

HAIRSPRAY

Candy for pyros. The pantheon upon which the 1980s were rocked. Crack for huffers. Fellow Barber is not a fan, but when not being abused, a quick spritz of hair spray is like casting a protective net over your hair that keeps it set in times of humidity and when riding in convertibles. AMERICAN CREW GROOMING SPRAY $14.99

DRY SHAMPOO Washing does have its loopholes - turns out you don’t have to wet your head in order to get your hair clean. Not with this powder usually made from clay or cornstarch. A few sprinkles upon your noggin and it sops up all of those malodorous oils that make your hair look and smell dirty. And hark, because it dries up your hair, it can also be used as a styling agent to give you that perfect, post-all-dayat-the-beach look. ADLER DRY SHAMPOO $30

WAX & GREASE

These are the classic pomades that, as the names suggest, are waxy and greasy. They have a strong hold and will give your hair some gleam - perfect for 50’s style pompadours, or for helping guys with curly and coarse hair achieve a 60’s-like Mad Men slick. Back in the day these products were so waxy that one application meant a few days commitment, but in these ever-changing modern times, it’s possible to purchase water soluble versions, so you UPPERCUT can change things up daily. FEATHERWEIGHT WAX $22

"MATTE"

Like paint at the hardware store - anything labeled matte will make your hair absorb light and hence, not shine.

"SHINE"

Like a diamond - anything labeled shine will reflect the light and make your head look more precious.

SKINCARE

REPLETE a unisex rejuvenating elixir by Joyce Darkoh

The time when women paid more attention to their health and beauty than men has long passed. When assigned to write about Replete Skincare for this FSHN issue, I took a look around in our own bathroom just to see that my husband of ten years had stocked up more skincare products than myself. It may not be enough to use him as a prime example to prove that men actually do care about what they put on their skin, but the fact that a majority of lifestyle magazines dedicate a large section to skincare product for men should underline my personal discovery. Replete Skincare has long observed the importance of beauty care based on seasonal changes than gender differences. Elisabeth Thieriot, founder of Replete Skincare, discovered that the use of botanic supportive extracts helps to nourish and hydrate our skin during each season. The idea behind it is simple and logic - our skin requires different support as the season changes, which is independent from the gender. Using skincare that supply our skin with nutrients that consider two key biological cycles enhances biological processes that are important for balance and rejuvenation.

Replete TM Circadian Actives TM products deliver all nutrients that our skin requires within the 24hr cycle. It prevents unnecessary breakdown of cells and harm from being exposed to daylight. During the night, Replete TM Circadian Active helps the skin to detoxify and regain youth. Replete Seasonal Actives are serums that consist of nutrients made from seaweeds and other extracts building resilience and providing all necessary ingredients for healthy bones, metabolic functions, and an all over emotional well-being over a period of three months. One other important aspect that makes Replete Skincare products unique is the use of all natural, vegan ingredients and the exclusion of chemicals, fragrances and allergens at no cost of their effectiveness. As most men generally prefer fragrance-free, all-in-one products that are easy to use, this skincare line is perfect for both men and women and easy to share.

All products are free of allergens, fragrance, coloring, animal testing, parabens, and glycols. All vegan food quality ingredients. Safe for children under 3 years of age. Replete is EU certified.

INTERVIEW

Contemporary Twist On Coastal Comfort INTERIOR DESIGNER

JEFF TROTTER

by Joyce Darkoh

We first spotted Jeff Trotter on Instagram not knowing what his actual profession was. He caught our attention for two clear reasons - his profile feed, @jefftrotterdesign, which is a symphony of clean, aesthetic images of interior work, and his model-like appearance. Jeff is one of the country’s most sought after rising professionals for interior design, however, his handsome look may have mistaken him for someone with an active modeling or acting career. It’s obvious that this tall and athletic young man with a favor for casual clothing has a thing for trends and styles. It can be seen in his fresh, yet timeless design aesthetic, which is often described as having a contemporary twist on coastal comfort. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Jeff attended UCLA and started his career with a major motion picture studio in set design and art direction. He went on working for several top residential interior designers; and after six years in the industry he launched his own firm, Jeff Trotter Design. Jeff’s discerning eye for seamless blends of both traditional and comfortable elegance with contemporary undertones results in beautiful residential spaces. His work, full of laid back luxury typical for Californian lifestyle, can also be seen in large scale restaurants and hospitality design, and historic properties. FSHN had the opportunity to do this interview with Jeff Trotter and ask him for his inspiration and trends.

196

MENSWEAR ISSUE 2016

FSHN: Jeff, thank you for your time to do this interview. Tell us a bit about what project you are currently working on. JT: I have several great projects in full swing at the moment on both the West and East coast, which are keeping me busy and racking up frequent flier miles. Currently they are all either small scale or total renovations, which are my favorite type of project. I love not just designing and decorating the interior of a space, but also making active and constructive changes to the architectural bones of it as well. Renovating to me, is like breathing new life into an existing structure, and allows me to operate outside of someone's preexisting design boundaries.

I also make it a rule that I expose myself to different cultures, countries, and unique places several times a year. Travel especially, reinvigorates me and inspires me to create. This past year Turkey, Greece and Mexico were the countries of choice. FSHN: Can you remember your first project under Jeff Trotter Design? What were your concerns or fears? And how was the outcome? JT: My first project was both exciting and terrifying at the same time. It was my first opportunity to not only create and design, but also exercise my business prowess. I think it's extremely important for budding designers to understand that this "business" is not just about conceptualizing and creating pretty spaces. It is a business and requires a skill set that goes beyond picking out pillows and throws. In the end, a few mistakes were made, several lessons were learned, but those initial client's have rehired me several times since, so I guess the outcome was pretty positive. FSHN: How do you approach new projects? How much input from your clients is necessary, and how do you determine how much of your own ideas you induce? JT: Every client is different, so my approach to each project is different as well. Some instantly trust my taste and vision and let me run free to create, while others prefer to be heavily involved in my creative process. In the end, it's imperative to remember that I am hired to create a space for my client, not for myself. I listen to their functional needs and dream desires and blend those with my signature style and expert eye.

FSHN: What determined your passion for design? Was there a significant moment when you decided to choose this way? JT: I have always loved design. It may sound cliché, but I really was that kid who would redesign his room by moving furniture around, borrowing different linens form my parent's linen closet, and trying to convince my Mom to buy new bedding after watching too much HGTV. I realized early on, that when I designed, I seemed to lose all track of time. When I figured out that I could get lost in my passion and actually make a career out of it, I knew I was on the right path. FSHN: Where do you get your inspiration from? JT: I find inspiration in almost everything. I'm particularly inspired by fashion, architecture, and nature.

FSHN: Can describe your own style with colors and compositions? Do you work with contrasts, lighting, or geometrical rules? Are there any rules? JT: Contrast, texture, proportion and lighting are everything to me. I love creating visual and tactile interest through layered textures and unexpected pops of contrast. My style is often defined as tailored, livable, luxury because I strive to create spaces that are not only beautiful, but also inviting. When it comes to design "rules" it's important to know which to respect and abide by, and which to not be afraid to break. FSHN: In a previous interview, you had mentioned that you do not follow design trends too much. What are “must have’s” despite any trend? JT: My design must have's that you'll find in almost all of my projects are something marble, something from or inspired by nature and something gray. Whether I'm doing an extremely sleek and modern home in the Hollywood Hills or a coastal Spanish revival in Palm Beach, those signature design elements are guaranteed to be incorporated.

FSHN | 197

FSHN MAGAZINE

FSHN: If you had the freedom to pick any building or property what would you love to redesign or renovate? JT: I have had my eye on a piece of property in Newport Coast for several years now. If it ever goes on the market, I'd love purchase it, level the existing home, and build my dream beach house from the ground up. It would include all of my favorite design elements and must haves without any client restrictions. To create a property like that, based solely on my own wants and needs, in a location so inspired by the Pacific Ocean and beach lifestyle would be a dream! FSHN: Do you have one piece of advice for our readers on how to create a comfortable home with little means? JT: I have more than just one piece of advice. Budget is an issue for all clients, so my first tip is to not spend beyond your means. You do not have to break the bank to have a beautiful space. When operating within your budget remember these three things: 1) Do not abide by trends-trends aren't timeless and you're bound to get tired of them sooner rather than later. 2) Only invest in pieces you truly love and can see in your home for years to come. 3) Paint is one of the most inexpensive and most dramatic ways to transform a space. FSHN: Where do you see your firm, yourself ten years from now? JT: I've always been a proponent of setting big goals and working hard to achieve them. Ideally, I envision myself not just as a designer, but as a successful design brand.

Blogger TOP-LisT

Menswear bloggers we think you should follow

by Joyce Darkoh

Menswear blogger are booming, and even though we welcome the thought that this particular niche is dominated by female bloggers who earn five and six digit figures annually, the rise of their male counterpart was long due. It indicates an increase of interest in fashion and a love for details among men, and it is very beautiful to watch. So beautiful that we here at FSHN decided to put a list together that introduces some of the top dogs among menswear bloggers, and some promising new cats in the game that stand out and are worth following:

@iamgalla (USA)

Arguably one of the biggest names in men’s fashion blogging, Adam Gallagher is the founder of the blog I Am Galla. There is no doubt that Adam knows his art through and through; his site includes fashion, food and travel inspirations blogged with perfectly composed photography. Tall and handsome, as Adam is, any style he introduces, any tips he provides appear so casual and easy to follow, which explains why so many other guys follow his blog and get inspired. He is, without a doubt one of our favorite bloggers.

@danielre (Italy)

It is undoubtable that the Italians truly now their job when it comes to fashion, and that ability is genderless. Adding the fact that this successful blog was founded by Dr. Daniel Zaccone, a doctor of biotechnologies and cell biology turns this blog into a true science of the refined and sophisticated look of La Dolce Vita. His blog offers various suit, shirt and coat combinations with carefully selected accessories in a cropped headless image that clearly puts attention to the wardrobe and not the individual. The blog page The Italian Flair, one of the most successful blog sites around, offers merchandise and interesting press links, as well as a full image of Dr. Dan.

222

MENSWEAR ISSUE 2016

@hespokestyle (USA)

If there is one blogger who really deserves to be called “dapper” then it is Brian Sacawa, creative head behind the blog He Spoke Style. If one needs video tutorials, reliable style guides and product recommendations to learn about basic principles in menswear styling then this blog is a must-read source. His own images always have a twist of the classic 1960s and modern suitwear paired with his own sophisticated style (which is slightly influenced by his work as a musician). What we love about He Spoke Style is the fact that his blog reflects the initial purpose of blogging, which is expressing opinions, do recommendations and give advice.

@davidguison (Philippines)

We were unaware of the large amount of menswear bloggers in Asia, which seem to have their own audience apart from the Western followership. David Guison is by far one of them who could be called the top fashion blogger in the Philippines. His style is rather trendy and let’s say, Coachella fashion inspired; all in all, he’s a young guy who follows trends and knows how to blog them authentically. Even though his rather streetwear oriented style stands out on this list his site still draws attention thanks to aesthetic images and a clean social media feed; and after all, 524k followers cannot be wrong.

@fashitect (UK)

There are bloggers who simply post images of fashion and lifestyle, and then there are bloggers who tell you a story with their images. Toni Tran is one of them and you will understand what we mean when you visit his blog or his Instagram feed. His images are creative compositions of fashion, food and lifestyle, and literally every picture invites you to explore the details. It’s obvious that Toni works with larger product companies that prefer an editorial style to promote their product. Just for the fact that any of his images could be framed and put on the wall, we agreed that The Fashitect has to make our list.

FSHN | 223

FSHN MAGAZINE

@isnathan (Australia)

We have no idea what Nathan McCallum ’s style is exactly, but it doesn’t really matter because his Instagram feed is full of “enjoying life” and “lay back and chill” messages that we want to wear the same white t-shirt he is blogging just to be part of it. His blog name Bangarang Blog tells it all; enjoy life, stay healthy, and exercise to look like Nathan. The most entertaining part of his site is his first DIY video on how to pimp up a hat. And, yes, underneath all these fun looking images there is a precisely planned out marketing strategy with links to merchandize pages and brand sites. But it is just fine because who wouldn’t want to buy stuff from this charming bearded guy who seems to have no worries about life and such at all.

@matthiasgeerts (Belgium)

One of the reasons why Matthias made our top list is because he holds the pole position in a comparably small country; there are only a handful bloggers in Belgium, and Matthias is truly the most stylish one. His blog features fashion styles that can be worn by any average young men living a normal lifestyle in any European city. What we love the most is the fact that he recommends and reviews pieces for every wallet starting from H&M to Tommy Hilfiger. You can join Matthias while he visits amazing hotels in Asia, goes snowboarding in Austria or attends opening events for H&M or Topshop.

@keymanstyle (Germany)

There's something very cosmopolitan about Stephan, the creative head behind ....... , which is no surprise knowing that his actual profession is brand managing for an international fashion label. His styles cover all categories, from being sportive to formally chic. It seems as if Stephan can adjust to any look without looking heavily over or underdressed; someone who truly found his own individual style and shares it with his followers. His wardrobe includes basic masculine colors such as brown and blue combined with little eye catcher in form of white sneakers or a colorful pocket square. All in all, @keymanstyle stands for a solid contemporary style with a touch of English - Italian flair.

BLOGGER INTERVIEW MEET

MUSTAFA KACAR AND HIS BLOG ASTUTE ATTIRE by Joyce Darkoh

Mustafa Kacar can definitely be called the gentleman of all bloggers. The creative mind behind the blog Astute Attire never loses his sophisticated and dapper touch even if he blogs jeans or sneakers. His Instagram feed (@astuteattire) reflects a very esthetic mix of lifestyle, fashion and travel all portrait in clean and carefully chosen images, which may explain his large followership of currently 229k. Even though his name implies a foreign origin, Mustafa was born and raised in New York; only his exotic travel destination like Baku, Germany or Italy seems to reveal an inherited wanderlust.

FSHN | 225

FSHN MAGAZINE

For this issue, we had the honor to interview Mustafa Kacar and ask him how he started this successful journey and also get his opinion about fashion, blogging and a few styling tips.

FSHN: Your blog Astuteattire.com is one of the most successful blogs around. What encouraged you to start your blog? MK: It started out as just a simple platform to document and share my outfits. It's become so much more now as Astute Attire is as much about lifestyle as it is fashion. FSHN: What type of men do you address with your blog? Who are your average followers? MK: Any man who wants to be up to date on the latest in menswear, tech, auto, design, and anything in-between. My average followers are men between the ages of 17-35 spanning the US, UK, Brazil, Netherlands, and Indonesia. FSHN: Can you describe your personal style? MK: I would would describe my overall look as American Classic with a modern twist, which is true casual and effortless at its heart. FSHN: There has been a drastic change among men and fashion in the last few years. What are your thoughts on this? MK: Men's fashion changed about 5-6 years ago when guys started to pay closer attention to what and how they were wearing their clothes.

226

I think it's great that men are starting to “look good” and it's opened up an entirely new market for brands. If you look at the numbers, you'll see that menswear has easily grown in double digits in the United States and U.K. over the past 5 years. FSHN: Your blog also includes traveling and lifestyle. Which one of your travels has been the most impressive one for you so far? MK: I try and take a positive memory from all of my trips. But a couple of my favorites are waking up at 5:30 a.m. to watch the sunrise and shoot at the Piazza Navona in Rome as well as swimming in the Blue Lagoon in Oludeniz, Turkey. FSHN: How do you get inspired of what to wear and blog next? MK: It's a combination of things. If I'm working on a sponsored campaign with a brand, then I'll try and style whatever the piece is (shoe, watch, jacket) around my own personal style. If not sponsored, it'll just be something I'm wearing that day. FSHN: Who is Mustafa when there are no cameras around? What do you do in your spare time? MK: I love anything documentary related, so I'm always looking for interesting things to watch. Also, I'm big on history and food.

MENSWEAR ISSUE 2016

FSHN: Lately, a lot of young guys are starting their own menswear blog with more or less success. What is your recommendation and advice for them? MK: I guess it makes sense that since menswear is growing at such a rapid pace, so are menswear bloggers. In terms of advice? I think it's very important not to copy others and to remember to be yourself. Also, there isn't a magic formula to be successful. It's different for each person, you just need to figure out what works for you. So just be ready for a lot of trial and error. FSHN: What are three must-have items that every fashion-conscious guy should have in his wardrobe this season? MK: As the weather gets warmer, my spring must haves are: 1 Sunglasses: If you want to keep it strickly timeless, then you can't go wrong with a pair of Wayfrarers or Persols. However if you want to stand out a bit more, then try some Komono's or Kaibosh's. 2 White Sneakers: So many brands make them, and you can easily find a pair for around $75. 3 Colorful Chinos: Super verstatile and many colorways available, making it easy to transition from work to happy hour! Just make sure they are flat front and in a slimmer fit. FSHN: What are your next projects and goals? MK: I'm always looking to grow and have many different ideas and goals. Right now I have a lot of exciting opportunities coming up in automotive and tech. Also, I'm looking to focus more and more on video.

INTERVIEW

AVA PIVOT

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER & FSHN CREATIVE DIRECTOR

by Joyce Darkoh

Our creative Director and Editorial Director, Ava Pivot is no no-name in the fashion industry at all. As a matter of fact, her expertise and experience in fashion photography has given her international recognition. Multiple magazines worldwide have featured her images in form of ad campaigns, editorials or artist features. Born in 1980 in Starnberg, as a child of a renowned artistic family, Ava's love for art already began in her cradle. Her parents had prepared the path, with the mother being an excellent illustrator, and the father an engineer for Water Science and a respectable art collector, and the only one in his family who was denied to turn to art.

Today, Ava's photo spreads, including nude and fashion editorials, are published in various international magazines with large distribution. Her images are shown at international art galleries and exhibitions, and the demand for her art is steadily rising. As a mother of twins, Ava manages to keep up with her busy schedule, which includes preparing shoots, casting models, negotiating with brands and artists, and networking, networking, networking. The majority of her time, Ava spends with finding new inspirations for new shoots, and themes that could be transformed into beautiful images. If you are a current reader of FSHN Magazine then you have had the opportunity to enjoy her amazing fashion editorials in the past, as well as in this issue. But there is more to her images, something that many of her fellow colleagues intend to achieve in their art. We caught up with Ava for this interview, where she reveals the secret behind her success.

FSHN: Ava, we are doing this interview here at your studio. What are you currently working on? AP: I am preparing for a couple of important shootings that are coming up within the next few weeks. I was booked to shoot with a few male top models and for a huge campaign, so everything has to be planned out. Moodboards have to be made, Make - up and hair have been booked, location has been searched, and I have to meet with stylists to discuss the theme and mood behind the shoot.

228

FSHN: How long have you been working as a photographer? How did it all start? AP: I actually started my career at Dorrinck & Hartenfels in Hamburg, where I learned the trade of classic photography, which is similar to analog photography. I then met my mentor, the famous Jacques Toffi, one of the greatest artists and horse photographers worldwide, and became his assistant. I then completed master school and finished my degree in Illustration and Graphic Design.

MENSWEAR ISSUE 2016

I love horses and equitation was my hobby back then, so I did a lot of horse photography while working on getting my portfolio filled with big fashion jobs. I did a few lookbooks, and campaigns then already, for brands like Delmod and KimKara, just to name a few. Then there was a time when I took a break from photography, and I exclusively worked as a free-lanced graphic designer, even though my heart was always with photography. That is why, after five years of abstinence, I finally returned to my original profession back in 2012, and have been shooting eversince. FSHN: In your opinion, what is important when you compose your images? AP: For me, images have to tell a story; they have to show the face behind the face, and I think that is what photography is about. An editor of chief of a large magazine once said that my work is characterized by the fact that it shows people's 'self 'and not just their visual look. I find it important to transfer 'soul and emotion' and manifest a very fine, wonderful sensuality, and I believe it requires a special intuition and sensitivity for the use of natural light so you can use your own visual language to make images that are rarely intensive. FSHN: You are also known for your nude photography. How do you manage to keep them esthetically clean and artistic despite the nudity? AP: It's the soul that I want to see, in the eyes, in the stories that are told through images. Arousing emotions and promoting them. Even fashion should have soul, and arouse passion. For me, good nude photography requires strong sensuality; it's much more important than nudity itself. The mood has to fit; it has to be sensitive. There's a quote by Coco Chanel that means a lot to me: Female nudity you have to give the men with the teaspoon, not with the big dipper." For me, an image is only truly erotic if the spectator's imagination is stimulated and running. Revealing everything is boring indeed. However, thanks to today's media, this is still standard, even though erotic happens in the head for the most part. FSHN: Lately, we have seen a lot work of yours that include men photography. Is this a new direction in your career? AP: Right now, I would like to increase my photography of men in fashion, portraits and nude. A good image of a man must appeal to everyone regardless of the viewer's gender or sexual inclination. And once again, imagination is the key. Of course, I will still enjoy photographing women, but the massive hype over beauty and anorexic looks made me discover my passion for men photography." FSHN: How important are the settings and locations you do your shoots? AP: Of course, the location plays a big role in the composition of an image because it influences ev-

erything. I also do studio work but I prefer to shoot on location, and at places, where I have a flexibility to alter the surrounding to my preference. The most fun I have by seeing the growth of a great outcome with only simple input. Of course, it's great to be at the most beautiful locations, shoot the fanciest model and have the most professional team behind you; but the feeling that you have pulled the almost impossible into something great, is the most rewarding part of this job. FSHN: Jaques Toffi was your mentor, back then when you started your career. What other photographers have influenced your work the most? AP: My absolute favorite photographer will always be Peter Lindbergh, a true genius in his field. He just knows his craft and creates amazing basic images full of emotions, and he has this special sense for beautiful women. Günther Rösser is my inspiration when it comes to nude photography; the only workshop I ever visited was his, during analogue times, but it was a great experience. I even got to know one of his biggest muses by chance, and heard nothing but good about him. It shows that he was a good person in private, as well; a fact that I find very admiring, meaning when the art is as beautiful as the artist behind it. FSHN: What has been your favorite photo location or session? AP: My favorite shooting was definitely with my freckled muse in an antique Opel. It was very spontaneous, we only had one hour to shoot. It has been a while but I truly love her. A few weeks ago, I had an amazing shooting with a great male model in pouring rain, all black and white, but still unpublished. He was amazing. And my current favorite shooting session is one with my new muse, an erotic male shooting in a shell construction. FSHN: For the amateurs and camera lovers among our readers, give us some details about the type of cameras you shoot with, the lighting and other accessories you find necessary to have. AP: My favorites are analog cameras. I started using Nikon for the digital section and I like it a lot. For 2016, I will start using a Leica middle format, so, I’m looking forward to that experience. But my all-time favorite is an analogue Hasselblad. As far as the lens is concerned, I would always recommend Nikon, definitely 85 1:1, 4 – I love the objective. I love natural light and playing around with it. Last year, I worked a lot in a studio, which is fine with me by now, as I mentioned before. But I’m really in my elements when I can work with natural light. My favorite light is during rain showers, with actual rain. I always use sun bouncer. However, very often I just walk around with my camera and one objective looking for natural highlighters and lighting effects.

FSHN MAGAZINE

FSHN: How important is Photoshop in your final images? AP: My perfect picture does not require Photoshop. I try to apply this to my nude photos, as little retouching as possible, or none at all. But for fashion magazines and fashion clients, Photoshop is inevitable. For a while, I really refused to use it and tried to stick to my undercutting style. And then, last year, I found a picture editor who related to my concerns, and taught me how to dose the amount of retouching with my images. Ever since then, I have been using Photoshop a lot, and I’m actually getting better at it. It has become like a meditation for me and I always look forward to retouching images from great photo sessions. FSHN: How important is a website and social media for your business? AP: I wish I could say something different than the fact that it has become the most important tool for advertisement and networking, and it should never be underestimated. I have been way behind with my own social media and have to invest some serious time and work to catch up. FSHN: Do you listen to music while doing your shooting? How do you keep the team motivated, and the atmosphere right? AP: I usually do, yes, even though I haven’t listen to anything in a while; so, it is definitely about time again. My absolute favorite music is by Jamie Woon; it’s perfect for retouching, even though a photographer friend recommended to listen to audio books. Therefore, I have been listening to plenty of crime stories while retouching in the middle of the night. I prefer this a lot to a movie night out. We don't always have the chance to play music while on location because it might be a nature setting. Then I have to use all my sense for teamwork and empathy to inspire and motivate the whole team. Motivation is all, you can see it in the images afterwards if the mood was not right, you can see it in the faces of the models, their posture, just the whole composition. So, in addition to finding that perfect angle, perspective, setting and facial expression, I also have to make sure that the mood stays positive at every shoot. That's one reason why I often feel like I have completed a half marathon after most shoots even though it was fun in the making. FSHN: What’s the craziest/funniest thing that ever happened in one of your shoots? AP: The craziest shoot ever I experienced was in the middle of Berlin. We shot nude images, so the model was completely naked. My dog "Frau Fruggel," who is always present, was running around without a leash, and all of a sudden a police car came up towards our direction. I literally saw myself in handcuffs. The model was half way hiding behind me, so imagine

230

the scene. And at the end, the policemen just rolled down the window and asked us to put the dog on the leash and drove off!! FSHN: You currently live in Berlin together with your little twins and your dog, "Frau Fruggel", a Weimaraner who can be seen in many of your images. Is Berlin, where you want to live for the rest of your life? AP: I was born in Munich, so I grew up near the alps. I love nature, and I only really feel home when I can smell the mountain air again. My favorite city is still New York, but I also have a connection with Paris. In an ideal world, I would live on the country side, and also spend a lot of time in New York. I would love to live in Ticino, Italy, right at the Coma Sea. The Italian mentality and their lifestyle is so admiring to me. But I haven't had the chance to travel the world yet, so maybe I will find my dream location to settle soon. My mobility was limited back then due to my horses and equitation; and now photography provides the opportunity for me to travel and experience new cultures. I had no idea what I was missing. I truly discovered a new passion as my profession allows me to work and travel to other countries and cities. FSHN: What are your plans for the next few months? AP: I am planning to travel more in the near future. We are in contact with multiple agencies and magazines in the US with whom we plan to collaborate with, so my next trip will be to the US. We also have a few artists in Italy, England and Austria that I will shoot, so I cannot wait to share the finished images soon. We are also discussing steps to get more involved in social media and all options it provides for brands and artists but I cannot reveal too much yet. All in all, it will be a busy year for sure.

HOROSCOPE

GEMINI

TAURUS

A P R I L 2 1 - MAY 21

Just like their female counterpart, Taurus men are ruled by Venus and governed by the element Earth. It makes them very loyal, peaceful, practical and sensible but also very serious and thoughtful about every step of their life. Taureans do not like changes, and inconsistency; and life-changing decisions could take forever unless they appear to be reasonable. That is the main reason why it takes Taurus men the longest to propose or enter a relationship even though they might be completely in love. However, once they love and decided for you they will stay around forever and share with you their love for a luxury lifestyle, and surprise you with gifts.

M AY 2 2 - J U NE 2 1

Gemini men are very social, and they love to communicate and explore. They are ruled by the element Air, which makes them open for anything new and very spontaneous in their decisions and actions. Gemini men are not ruled by any sentiments; instead their decisions are based on logic, even though they have a kind and loving heart. They love cleanliness, and prefer to see tidiness on their choice of women. Any gentle woman that can keep the relationship adventurous without being dramatic or jealous has a slight chance to end up happy with a Gemini guy, if she manages to read through his controlled emotions and avoids arguing or confrontations in any form.

Your Zodiac Guide To

GETTING WHAT YOU WANT by JOYCE DARKOH You can believe or not believe in horoscope, but a majority of us has read descriptions of their horoscope and probably discovered some surprising consistency. Not counting moments, when first date nights abruptly ended after one of the two fatally revealed its zodiac sign. This is no coincidence at all, because behind the short descriptions of zodiac characters lies a centuries-old collected information about the mutual influence of planets on each other, their relationship to the Sun and Earth, and the impact of the outer space processes on human beings and their life path. Despite the fact that each of the twelve zodiac signs describes the same talents and abilities of a person within the same period, every person develops his/her own individual and unique characteristics at birth due to individual life inducements, but also because repeating the combination of the planets exactly in the same manner is simply impossible. In this Menswear issue, we focused on typical zodiac characteristics of men and their love life hoping it will help you chose your next date wisely.

CANCER

J UN E 2 2 - JULY 22

If you are dating a Cancer man then you are in for guaranteed caring and endless emotions. Even though he appears a bit arrogant at times, he has sensitive personality traits that he often hides. These guys are often misunderstood because of their inexpressive behavior, and often react harsh in moments when they feel offended or betrayed because they possess a strong protecting barrier ruled by moon. When in a relationship, Cancer men are romantic heroes who protect and pamper their woman with all their love. But they will never express their desires and needs to you; so it is up to you to understand their feelings and prevent them from getting hurt.

248

LEO

J U LY 2 3 - A U G U S T 2 2

These people-loving guys are very confident and love to attract others to themselves, which makes them very popular, charming people with an excellent sense of humor. Ruled by the element Fire, Leo men take it up on themselves to set it right and keep things in control when they see something wrong. They are fascinating men even though their physical appearance may vary from small to big bodies; but their confident personality makes them to such fascinating individuals. Conscious about what people think about them, they are very precise about their relationships, which also makes them very picky. But once they have made the choice they will love their partners for the whole life.

MENSWEAR ISSUE 2016

VIRGO

AUG US T 2 3 - S E P T E M BER 22

Virgo men are ruled by the element Earth, which makes them very grounded and rational in their actions, but also very much intelligent and attractive. They can be very old-fashioned beings and are not good with modern changes. It is almost impossible to resist the cool and attractive ways of Virgo men, especially since they are also creative and extrovert in social conduct. The women they pick are carefully chosen under their critical judgment, and is often urged to undergo several changes to fit his ideology. If a woman does not like to be changed by her partner, then a Virgo man is not for her. But if she is willing to adjust and commit to these ongoing changes then the Virgo will be a truthful and loyal partner for life.

LIBRA

SEP T E M B E R 2 3 - O C T O B E R 2 3

Being social beings, Libra men are all about balance and harmony in their lives. Ruled by the element Air, these guys know exactly what they want and how they get it done. Libra men are very famous for their diplomatic skills; they speak and act only after weighing out the pros and cons of the consequences. In relationships, these men are one step ahead; in other words, they cannot be easily dumped because they can see their partner’s mind. It is said that there is always a connection of mind between a Libra man and his partner. Therefore, a Libra man can surely find his true love and love her truly. He often seems to act like a bad boy to his partner but the reality is that he wants to be true in his love.

SAGITTARIUS

The Sagittarius is the ninth sign of zodiac and it is a Fire element. Men born under this sign are very enthusiastic, energetic and confident to a point where they feel they will never lose. They are also very generous, and intellectual; and they love to help out inconsistent people. Their overconfidence often leads them to taking things for granted and ending up making mistakes. In relationships, Scorpio men search for that perfect mate even if it takes longer; but when they find her they strive hard to get her. Once they find that special one they will take her on an adventurous journey and take care of her and their family.

AQUARIUS

If you are looking for a relationship without the consideration of tying the knots then you should definitely pick an Aquarius man. Guys born under this Aquarius zodiac sign, which is based on element Air, are very intelligent, often called genius, and very patient listeners. However, the downside of it is that they are also very moody, very hard to comprehend and extremely sensitive about their feelings. They are freedom loving people, very independent, and they prefer their surroundings to be quiet and lonely. Even though they have many friends and share their feelings with others, only a handful are considered to be close. Their sense for family and bonding is very rudimental; one reason why they will look for a lover rather than a wife. But once they give their heart and fall in love, this feeling will last forever, and they will express their strong feelings in any which way.

Out of all star signs, the Scorpio is the most serious one amongst all. Scorpio men are influenced by the element Water and are known to be very passionate, caring and reliable despite their arrogant and reserved presence. Scorpio guys are very careful about keeping their secrets; and their mysterious nature seems to attract people to them. They avoid emotions and tend to be very dominant and controlling in relationships at times, but will always leave a distance to people even to those who are close to him. Most of the time, they are very caring and respectful to the women in their lives with love-making memories that no woman will ever forget.

CAPRICORN

NO VE MB E R 2 3 - D ECEM B E R 22

JA N UAR Y 2 1 - FE B RU A RY 19

SCORPIO

O C T O B E R 2 4 - NO V E M B E R 2 2

DE C E M B E R 2 3 - J A NU A R Y 2 0

Capricorn men are ruled by the element Earth and are considered the most ambitious and mature star sign out of all. They show a high grade of responsibility in all aspect of their lives, and never take stupid risks. All of their actions are carefully measured and calculated to gain the most efficient outcome, which makes them excellent business people. The two sides of a Capricorn man are business and fun; the main reason why he loves intelligent and rich women, who are a bit old-fashion and shy. And even in his relationships, his main interest is focused on work and business, and how to maintain wealth for a proper lifestyle with his spouse.

PISCES

F EB RU A R Y 2 0 - M A R C H 2 0

Emotions and sensitivity run the life of Pisces men. Ruled by the element Water, these guys are very social, sharing and intellectual people. At times, they appear to be arrogant and shy; but deep inside they have a kind heart and helpful nature. Their golden heart determines their actions and social activities; they are often drawn to people who need help, which in return, gives them a feeling of being needed. In relationships, Pisces men love to see interest for them in their spouses' eye. They will flirt and tickle to keep that small flame burning; and their emotions can be easily read by their facial expression. Sometimes, sadness over not getting the desired emotions or care from their partner impacts their whole activities, which almost makes them appear as tragic and mellow.

ARIES

MARCH 21 - APRIL 20

Nothing is easy with these guys; the more they have to fight for your attention and love the better, just as if they need to earn it. After all, they have a loveable childish side underneath their rough shell with a kind and loving heart. Once you conquered his heart, an Aries man will protect and take care of you forever, as long as you keep him entertained. Aries signs hate to be bored especially if they are not aroused sexually. But they are friends for life once you have captured their heart and keep them enthusiastic and engaged in excitement.
