PUBLISHER´S NOTE
S
ummer brings us outdoors into the sunlight for activities, sports, and social gatherings. This calls for a total change in attitude as well as wardrobe. An easy summer wardrobe should mainly consist of clothes made from cotton and linen as both fabrics are lightweight with a loose weave allowing for a free flow of air. I also suggest a color palette inspired by the summer shades of nature to best harmonize us with the mood of the season. Use clothes as a layer of protection against the strong summer rays, replacing the harsh chemicals we have become accustomed to using on our skin. Be smart by gradually adjusting your body to longer days outside filled with sunlight, fun, and laughter. This is the time to refill on minerals and vitamins for the year with the help of sunlight, fresh air, and water - the natural gifts of life that we very much need to live. Make sure to nurture your mind with the exploration of new and exciting adventures, activities and energy we encounter during summer travels. Much Love,

surreflections
Surreflections is a Berlin-based creative photo production label aiming to unite the virtues of photography, art, fashion and film to form surreal reflections. The masterminds behind the label are model/media science student Maria Knofe and artist/set designer Natalie Deutsch. By using mixed media, the duo aims to achieve an exceptional combination of all the different forms used. From fashion related productions over music videos to advertisements of unique art pieces, they give each of their client's' pieces and products significance and tell their story visually captivating. The client range includes fashion and jewelry designers, bands, concept stores, hair and make-up artists as well as photographers.hair and make-up artists as well as photographers.

FSHN: How and when did you come up with the idea to start a production label? Maria: We met about 15 years ago, back in school and we were always doing all sorts of handcraft work for school projects. After finishing school, I got into modeling and started exploring the fashion world while Natalie went to art school. Since we were still hanging out a lot we did the first few projects together combining our passions for art and fashion. Two years ago we finally decided to team up for real and found a production label.
fashion shows. My head is always spinning with these images, which helps me formulate my vision.
FSHN: What was the trigger for that decision or when did you realize that this will be your path for the future? Natalie: During Fashion Week in the summer of 2014 we were invited to showcase some of the work we did for a jewelry label in an offspace exhibition. The feedback was quite overwhelming, so I guess this was the starting shot for surreflections.
FSHN: What makes surreflections special? Maria: Since we were both born and raised in Berlin we have a very strong connection to the city and try to include as many other native artists in our work as possible. Also, we want to exhibit all sorts of products as works of art and constantly finding new ways to do so is our mantra. For us, fashion is a form of art. On top of that we are nice people. (Laughs.) #downtoearth
FSHN: What exactly is it that a production label like surreflections does? Natalie: Presenting the client or his pieces in the best possible way, but in a new, artsy context. For example, telling their story through mixed media that best suits their passions for their product.
FSHN: What do you wish for in the future? Maria: An intern. Haha. Natalie: A fancy tool belt.
FSHN: Where do you get your inspiration from? Maria: I’m obsessed with the Japanese Vogue and always ask my friends who visit to get me a copy. Also, I spend about 80 percent of my day staring at my phone (laughs) looking at beautiful editorials and

Natalie: I am mostly watching things around me. I also love to try out techniques on different graphic programs to see if I know how they work or not. This way I can create unconventional approaches to pictures since all roads lead to Rome. (Laughs.) And in the evening, when we are having a girl’s night, our other guests usually get annoyed because Maria and I are still brainstorming our ideas. Haha.
Maria: All kidding aside we are currently very focused on Berlin and the scene here. It’s a great place with great people but we would love to expand and explore other places for our work in an international context in the future as well.

ZEHNHOCHACHT
MAXIMUM CONTRAST - when something ordinary like paper becomes something special At a time in which the flood of visual stimuli shapes city life, there is an increasing tendency for minimalism in many areas. Less is more - more rest for the eyes.
Whether it concerns photography, layout designs, home interior or structures in a museum: A perfect arrangement is characterized by a radiation of harmony and calm. With these ambitions in mind, ZEHNHOCHACHT creates high-quality wrapping paper and postcards. New designs and products are in their development phases already and evolve with adherence to highest quality standards. Manufactured in the company’s own country, the products stand out thanks to their uniqueness and pure elegance. The design includes the laws of harmony, the golden ratio and Feng Shui. Besides ZEHNHOCHACHT is the very first brand to design wrapping paper exclusively in black and white. »ZEHNHOCHACHT« which literally means »ten to the power of eight« is a young design label from Dortmund, Germany, which was founded in December 2015. The brand name reflects and emphasizes the attitude of the two young entrepreneurs who stand behind it. Evi Spies and Fedor Bräutigam want-
ed to create an ode to the existence and converted the meaningful number 108, which is a symbol for life itself: To be (1) and not to be (0) in infinity (8/∞). “We see elegance as a result of an inner attitude of peace.” Creating a peaceful and harmonious order in black and white, the strongest contrast ratio is the declared aim in every new creative process and becomes apparent in every single design of ZEHNHOCHACHT. ”Contrasts seem to be conflictingly at first sight, though in truth they operate like two poles in mutual support. ZEHNHOCHACHT is an attempt to show the harmony that lies within such supposed contrasts in a multifaceted, beautiful way.“ The German startup offers more than excellent products. ZEHNHOCHACHT shows how it is possible to unite contrasts in harmony. With an attitude of peace and extraordinary beautiful wrapping paper. www.zehnhochacht.com

ITZENGA
Knowing each other from the early beginnings of their studies, Theda and Denise, joined as ITZENGA, a young jewelry brand from Berlin. Combining traditional goldsmith techniques with innovative product design, they strive for an elegant approach creating contemporary handmade jewelry. FSHN: Tell us a bit about your brand. What is ITZENGA? I: Itzenga’s signature work mainly is creating conceptually designed jewelry based on European crystal vintage glass from the 50s and 60s. Using complex forms and structures and transforming them into contemporary fashion pieces by casting and deforming technique, we aim to deliver well designed, handmade products that are ethically produced. FSHN: Where do you get your inspiration from? I: Definitely from the vintage objects themselves, we love the aesthetics of the geometry that is captured in these old-fashioned glass works. Berlin is full of flea markets and thrift shops, where we find lots of old crystal glass with all kinds of shapes and structures. It’s a never-ending source of inspiration. The latest collection we created was strongly inspired by Art Deco, which again focusses on geometry and symmetry. But if you are open-minded, you can get inspiration from everywhere. Plus, we love to learn new techniques from different departments, like old crafts and new technology, mix them up to see if something interesting comes out. FSHN: Your pieces do not only come from a vintage background, they also have those oldfashioned names, like Frida or Margot. What is this about? Do you want to outline your German
58
roots? I: This is more a question of detail and concept. If you look at the finished pieces, you wouldn’t actually guess that vintage background. With the names we try to preserve their heritage, so to say. And besides, we think they’re beautiful and should not be forgotten. FSHN: How would you describe your style? I: Itzenga offers a variety of both fashionable everyday jewelry and the more eloquent, outstanding and elegant it-pieces. Although the designs are strictly conceptually related to the vintage theme, we always try to manage to create pieces that fit into modern fashion. We, as a designer-duo, are constantly searching for new opportunities to express our desire for form and structure. And as the main focus of our work is transferable to a lot of disciplines in design, we now started to bring Itzenga to a next level, experimenting with leather for example. FSHN: What do you think is essential for a young fashion brand to be successful? I: Keep on going and never lose focus on what you want to achieve. You should enjoy the journey at any times. For us both it’s very important to be able to rely on each other not only as partners but also good friends.

ABLY SPEAKING by Joyce Darkoh
THE AGE OF SUSTAINABILITY Sustainability has become a topic that matters lately. Even to me. I have to admit that I have been quite careless about global warming, our energy resources and where my plastic waste goes to. Of course, I would look disgusted when someone would litter their gum or plastic on the street. And yes, often times I would stumble over video clips of mammals that were found with plastic stuck in or outside their body, and feel terrified for a moment. And then again, I work in an industry, which uses sources that harm our economic system, our environment and take the slaughtering of animals for the sake of luxury clothes and beauty care. The first time I heard about sustainable clothes or eco-friendly fashion, I thought of Woodstock, hemp fabric in its natural tan and matching braided slippers. It was not until I googled "sustainable suits" out of curiosity that I realized how off my thinking was. In 2013, the British department store Marks & Spencer introduced their first "green suit" made out of Global Organic Textile (GOTS) certified organic wool, recycled polyester canvas, and lining made out of recycled plastic bottles. In other words, M & S had constructed suit completely made out of waste that you usually find in the corner of some streets. And you couldn't see any difference. The theme of this year's annual MET Gala, an important red carpet and fundraising event to support the Metropolitan Museum of Art´s, Costume Institute in New York was Fashion In An Age Of Technology. It gave a majority of eco-friendly designers a chance to show off their sustainable designs on high-rank celebrities, who wore amazing robes and gowns made out of recycled material on the red carpet.
60
So, how important is sustainability nowadays, especially since it has affected a field that is known for its lavish and know-no-boundaries luxurious products? It's very important, actually, it has become a necessity to preserve that last piece of functional eco-system for the sake of our survival and that of our children, and their children. Anyone who still believes that increasing natural disasters and dying off species are the result of a natural eco cycle should look again because these losses are irreparable. All it really takes is a conscious mind for what is waste, what is natural, what can be avoided and what is a necessity, and what is an unnecessary addition. The next time you buy your grocery, check the packaging of some of the products and ask yourself if that second layer of plastic was necessary. The next time you buy a shirt under $15 and you feel as if you made a pretty good deal, ask yourself, how much was left to pay for wages to sew this piece after you deduct the cost of fabric and the profit. The next time you buy your cosmetics, ask yourself, which human being would volunteer to test out the allergic side effects of the product when the label states "clinically tested". Sustainability starts in our mind way before we notice the effects of our negligence. It starts by being aware, asking questions and being critical. Our nature and children will be thankful for it one day. Email me your thoughts about sustainability, and how you contribute to keeping our environment clean: joyce@fshnmagazine.com Until next time, Stay FSHNable Joyce

POLITICALLY CORRECT
power of fashion One must harness the power of fashion if one is to be successful visually. There are a few out-of-the- ordinary people who are so brilliant or so spectacular that they have no need to dress in accordance with the rules of fashion etiquette. They leave us lesser people to follow the rules and create a presentation of themselves that is powerful. To have a properly powerful ensemble, one must dress politically correctly. Women have a much more complex approach to dressing with a powerful flair than gentlman. One must maintain standards depending on the circumstances. If one is to dress for power, one must not emphasize too much of a sexual note in one’s outfit. With evening wear, this choice is more flexible. For example, with evening wear one can choose a dramatic neckline or hemline to create a strong impression. However, during the day and in the working community, one must use other tactics to exploit the power of fashion. Those tactics include choosing a strong color or a statement piece such as an acces-

sory or underpinning. To dress with power means to dress in a style that is so visually dominating it cannot be ignored. Men have a much easier time than women when dressing for power. Men’s fashion is inherently minimal. A well-tailored suit and strongly colored tie is the epitome of a strong gentleman when it comes to fashion. There are small details men can follow to create a stronger appearance. Personally, I believe pinstripes present a sharp visual impression. Striped ties, tie pins, and a sturdy briefcase always create a powerful look. If one has an important meeting or event or is competing for a client, one cannot expect to show up in a dull outfit and make a strong impression. Visual appearance is the strongest aspect of a first impression. Dressing with power and conviction will help one succeed.

DESIGNER DREAMS
“I dreamt I was falling, as if I was falling down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland, but this hole had velvet upholstered and tufted walls. I arrived in this magical garden where all the trees and flowers were made out of fabric in the most vivid and lush colors. Sitting in the garden at a table were three of my favorite decorators talking shop: Renzo Mongiardino, Henri Samuel, and Jeffrey Bennison. I sat down with them and drank their tea. They said to me, "Live, believe, dream, and create fantasies for people to enjoy. What does this mean?" Alex Papachristidis, Manhattan, New York
THE INTERPRETATION
Dreams of falling are usually concerned with the need to let go. For when one falls there is nothing to hold onto. In this scenario, faith and trust are often called into play: Someone or something will catch the dreamer and soften his fall. In another view, dreams of falling...such as falling asleep, or in love...indicate a headstrong surrender to the emotions. On every level, there is the wish to give up control. That the downward fall leads to Wonderland puts the dreamer in good stead: He has found a fascinating place in which to explore the symbolic, imagistic world of the unconscious. Whereas falling through a hole often references the intrauterine birth memory and expresses the wish for rebirth, the hole herein is more whole than empty... sumptuous with its upholstered, tufted walls. As such, nothing missing here; there is no ellipsis to worry over. The interior designer has managed to fill space in an imaginative way, to continue working at his trade while asleep. The fabric trees lend texture to the visual and reveal the aesthetic sensibilities. Having tea with ones mentors signifies the collaborative wish for creative inspiration, but also recognizes the need to pause and reflect...to sip, and not gulp ...while taking it all in.

BLOGGER
Sweden Got STYLE
- Meet Blogger UMIT OBEYD
"Less is more" is the best way to describe the fashion scene in Sweden. It does not mean that there is any lack of creativity at all as it can be seen with this month's blogger Umit Obeyd (@umitobeyd). His tasteful style is the product of an almost practical and yet trend following approach to fashion. Followed by almost 80k people on Instagram, this personal trainer gone blogger always has a cool look to present without needing a blog. His styles are easy to reproduce, which may be the secret of his success. Although his schedule was very busy so close to fashion week season, Umit took some time out to tell the FSHN readers a bit about himself, his view on blogging and fashion.
FSHN: What encouraged you to start blogging? And when did you start? UO: I started in 2013. Actually, I wasn’t so into the blogging thing, I never had ambitions to get more likes or followers. I just used to share pictures of my everyday life first, then I started to post pictures of my outfits and I realized that my pictures got more and more attention and many big accounts started to post my pictures, which gave me a lot of followers. Then I started to get several collaboration inquiries, many brands started to email me or wrote to me on DM asking me about promoting their brand. Nowadays I use Instagram more for promoting brands. FSHN: What type of men do you address with your images? Who are your average followers? UO: Those who have a passion for fashion, like to stay classy and idolize men like George Clooney and David Beckham – as I do. FSHN: Can you describe your personal style? How do your roots influence your way of dressing? UO: I love to mix and match to create different outfits
168
with some of the same pieces. And wherever I go I want to look classy. I have a lot of suits and often wear one, no matter where I go. It’s important for me to be well dressed. And it’s also important to wear clothes with good quality. My dad also used to dress in a suit, I remember how I as a child used to think that I also wanted to wear clothes like him, and so I think his style gave me inspiration when I got older. FSHN: There has been a drastic change among men and Fashion in the last few years. What are your thoughts on this? UO: I see Instagram as a big reason as to why men care more about their style now. It is an easy way to find inspiration - what other men wear and where to buy. FSHN: Your Instagram feed also includes traveling and lifestyle. Which one of your travels has been the most impressive one for you so far? UO: The most impressive travel I have had is the one to the Caribbean. I was there for a TV show on Swedish TV.
SUMMER FASHION ISSUE 2016
FSHN: How do you get inspired of what to wear and blog next? UO: When it comes to choosing clothes I never think about what other will think – if it will look like “too much” for where I am going etc. I want to be stylish and practical at the same time, I’m not that type of guy who wears jeans and a t-shirt because I’m thinking that “I will be at work the whole day.” I think every moment in life is worth looking good for. As I said above, I get a lot of my inspiration from David Beckham and George Clooney. FSHN: Who is Umit when there are no cameras around? What do you do in your spare time? UO: I work as an insurance agent and also as a personal trainer whenever I have spare time. When I’m not at work I shoot for my Instagram account and I spend a lot of my time with my family and fiancée. I am really interested in entrepreneurship, personal leadership and as you already know; fashion. FSHN: Lately, a lot of young guys are starting their own menswear blog with more or less success. What is your recommendation and advice for them? UO: Be yourself! As I mentioned in the beginning; my first few pictures were from my everyday life. I shared
and people liked it. I didn’t try to look like someone else; I think this is really important to think about. It’s a big difference between being inspired and copying. Those who see your pictures will see it quickly. Shortly: have your own style, wear what you like. You can have your uncle’s sweat and match that with a pair of nice pants and still look fabulous! You don’t have to always have the most popular things. If you like it, wear it. Pictures with good quality are another important thing to think about if you take your blogging seriously; it makes a difference. FSHN: What are three must-have items that every fashion-conscious guy should have in his wardrobe this season? UO: White trousers, double breasted blazer and cotton linen shirt. FSHN: What are your next projects and goals? UO: My biggest project right now is to move to Germany and build a life with my fiancée. A future goal of mine is to maybe one day to have my own brand in fashion industry. To connect with Umit , check out his Instagram @umitobeyd

Tenacity is the New Black
184
As an actress and a musician, Jackie Cruz has been acting and singing almost her entire life. “From when I was 6 years old to about 15 years old all I did was play the saxophone, learn how to sing, and how to act. I’ve always wanted to be the center of attention because I was an only child,” said Cruz. Flash-forward to 2016 and that dream is now a reality. The now 29-year old actresssinger is currently starring on the critically acclaimed Netflix original series “Orange is the New Black,” as Marisol Gonzales, better known as Flaca.
Unfortunately, Cruz’s journey hasn’t always been an easy one. When Cruz was 17, her dream of becoming an actress and a musician nearly came to an abrupt end when she was involved in a near fatal car accident that left her in need of emergency brain surgery. She also suffered a collapsed lung, two broken vertebrae, and ended up falling into a coma for 72 hours. Despite the bleak outcome, Cruz was determined to get back on her feet. With the help of some rehabilitation she was able to persevere and relearn how to walk.
While Cruz was born in Queens, New York, she was actually raised in the Dominican Republic, where her mother was studying to become a doctor. It wasn’t until Cruz was 15 years old that her mother decided to pack up their things and move from the Dominican Republic to Los Angeles in order to help her pursue a career in the entertainment industry.
After attending countless auditions in Hollywood, Cruz decided to move to New York. “I moved to Hollywood thinking that it was the place where my dreams could come true but it actually chewed me up and spit me out because of my car accident. The moment that I left Hollywood is when things started happening for me,” said Cruz. Ironically, it was while living in New York that she landed the role of a lifetime on “Orange is the New Black” as the feisty Latina, Flaca, in her very first New York audition. The show, which is centered on a minimum-security women’s prison, boasts one of the most diverse casts in television and is a favorite amongst both fans and critics alike.
When describing her character, Cruz said, “She’s this really sensitive gothic chick. My character surprised me a lot because I imagined a whole different story. They don’t tell you anything until you get your back-story.” It wasn’t until season three that Cruz finally received her character’s backstory. As Cruz’s importance in the series continued to grow she was promoted to a series regular in the recently released fourth season after being credited as recurring from seasons 1 through 3. Aside from acting and singing, Cruz enjoys giving back to her community. Just recently she attended a premiere party for the Women’s Prison Association where she gave a live musical performance and screened the first episode of season 4 to help them raise money. However, Cruz is also passionate about sharing her story with others and gave a TEDx Talk on “Cruzing Through Adversity” in May 2015. Over the past year the actress-singer has emerged a trailblazer for Latina’s everywhere and is definitely one to watch.

FSHN: First things first, how would you describe your style? JC: I don’t know how to describe my style because I like to stand out and I like to be bold. I don’t like to wear the same thing as someone else. I like to go thrift shopping and if I see something in a magazine that I like, I will send my aunt a picture of it and she will make it for me. I also really love leather jackets and vintage so I would say that my style is very retro rocker chic. FSHN: You obviously love wearing hats a lot, is that your go-to fashion accessory? JC: Definitely! I’m a hat girl. I have always been obsessed with headbands and hats. It first started because my bangs look better when they’re flat so that’s why I would wear hats and then I just started to really love it. FSHN: Who are some of your favorite designers? I love Alexander Wang, Christian Siriano, and Nicole Miller.
FSHN: What type of research did you do to prepare for your role on “Orange is the New Black,” prior to filming the first season? JC: I didn’t get the opportunity to go to a real prison so instead I would watch shows such as “Beyond Scared Straight” and documentaries about women in prison. It wasn’t until after I had filmed the first season that I started getting involved with the Women’s Prison Association. FSHN: What were you able to take away from working with the Women’s Prison Association? JC: I was able to meet some of the women who were in prison and I learned a lot about second chances, especially how corrupt the system really is since you can go to jail for just about anything. It was just really interesting getting to work with them because I was really judgmental before and now I don’t really judge anyone or think that if you were in prison that you must be a bad person. Things can happen to anyone, some people get caught and some people don’t. FSHN: Where do you see yourself in five years? JC: I hope to have my own film company as well as have a few films out by then. I also hope to be on the big screen and maybe even have my own show.
190
FSHN: Is there any specific type of film that you’d like to star in? JC: I have always wanted to do a film that is based on a different time period such as the 1920s or 1940s. My dream is to tell wonderful stories about women that move you. I love watching movies that make you think and understand things better. It would also be fun to do a film based on a comic book. FSHN: Are there any actors that inspire you? JC: Robert Downey Jr. and Meryl Streep. Robert is one of my favorite actors and you cannot go wrong with Meryl. She is the queen of acting. FSHN: Several of your co-stars have performed on Broadway, is that something that you ‘d be interested in pursuing as well? JC: Absolutely! Broadway is also a goal of mine. I actually heard that they’re writing a Broadway musical based on Cher’s life and career and it is my dream to play her on Broadway. Cher is another person that really inspires me in terms of fashion and I love her style.

SUMMER FASHION ISSUE 2016
Hello Beauties,
This time, it's about puffiness, dark circles and bags under the eye. Many of you ask what is the cause of it? There are a number of reasons that can cause puffiness and/or bags under the eyes. It can be a hereditary condition. It can also occur by leading an unhealthy lifestyle, for example, a junk food diet, smoking or excessive alcohol intake. Also causes are a lack of sleep or fluid retention from not drinking enough water. Additionally, as you age the fat under your eye will naturally soften and begin to sag under your eyes. The good news is there are ways to treat the puffiness and bags. First, it is important to consume enough water and keep yourself hydrated. It will correspondingly help balance out the water retention in your eyes if the cause was from consuming too much salt. You can also gently massage the under eye area to help the lymph drain - especially, if you believe the swelling is from allergies, sinus congestion, or a deviated septum. I suggest visiting your doctor if the puffiness does not subside. An easy at home remedy to try are green tea ice cubes. Use them in the morning after you wake up. The coldness, caffeine, antioxidants and tannins in the green tea ice cubes will help reduce the swelling, dark circles, and constrict capillaries and blood vessels. If you are looking to purchase a stronger product, I highly recommend one of these: 1) Anne Semonin Eye Express Radiance Ice Cube; 2) Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Dark Circle Eye Roller; 3) Clinique Repairwear Intensive Eye Cream; 4) Origins GinZing; or 5) Dermalogica Ultrasmoothing Eye Serum. I suggest starting at an earlier age with eye cream, it doesn't have to be a very expensive one, but it will provide extra support to keep the skin strong and maintain its youthful elasticity. In the end, the first step is maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a clean diet, exercise, drinking lots of water and getting enough sleep.
Love, Y vi

MODEL OF THE MONTH MEET
DENNIS DRÖMER @VIVA MODELS
FSHN: Dennis, thank you for taking the time out for this interview. Tell us a bit about how it all started. Dennis Drömer: Quite frankly, it started early for me. I got discovered at the age of thirteen when I was still in school. Obviously, I didn’t know better at the time, but my first shooting was for Quest with Rankin. It immediately felt natural to me as I knew the business through my parents, who met while both were modeling at the same job. They never pushed me in this direction, besides a small catwalk show when I was six, but it was rather a side experience in my mind. Anyway, it seems it must run in our blood…. ;)
212
FSHN: What are you doing professionally next to modeling? DD: I was always also interested in the business side of the fashion industry. When you stand in front of the camera it is easy to understand that it takes a lot more to create the product and strategies. So I've started working for a few befriended fashion agencies. I love to build up a brand and develop a new product. I never went to college, but it is an autodidact performance, which people seem to appreciate. Also, the exchange with people and the contact to buyers is very interesting. As a native to Berlin, who loves music and good vibes, I've also started hosting and planning my own events and spinning records from time to time.
SUMMER FASHION ISSUE 2016
FSHN: How do you stay in shape? Are you eating healthy or do you snack once in a while? DD: Food is my pleasure and my fridge is never empty. I just love fresh food and a good steak. Also, a personal trainer and nutritionist created some guidelines and a work-out plan, which I follow closely. But I must say that I enjoy my daily visits to the gym as a balance to my busy everyday life. FSHN: You stated that you love standing in front of the camera, what exactly are you enjoying so much? What were some of the fun moments you experienced? DD: Being a model is my job, which I take very seriously. It is my business. I am very fortunate to work with such a great booking agency such as VIVA who transformed my career to another level. The brands and products I have represented in the past year really speak to me and I've started to develop great relationships. Interestingly enough, the more success I receive the more I work on myself rather than leaning back and seeing how things come and go. I deeply believe in constant improvement.
FSHN: And what is the most beautiful thing on earth for you? DD: To live the way of ONE LOVE. This means respect, love and soul. Small things make the world bigger. I represent that statement also with two tattoos on my wrists. FSHN: So what is next for the model Dennis DrÜmer? DD: The future holds a few great things that I unfortunately can’t talk about right know. But I will surely go to the fashion capitals of the world for the next season and continue to grow my portfolio. FSHN: What advice do you have for fellow models? DD: Once in a while take a breath and realize what great opportunities we were given. Don't take yourself too seriously, while taking your work seriously. Try to give everyone a positive feeling about themselves. We have a great responsibility to represent a sense of time and taste. Be respectful and keep on smiling.
FSHN: What does beauty mean to you? DD: Inner beauty is everything, outer beauty helps, but nothing is better than a beautiful soul.

REPLETE
NEW SKIN INTELLIGENTLY by ELISABETH THIERIOT
Replete Skin Care facts with Dr. Mardirossian As we go into the summer months our interaction and exposure to the sun are our major concerns. The message from top facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Vartan Mardirossian makes it very clear that "skin care is important at any age, many people don’t realize that the way they treat their skin during their late teens and 20s will have an effect on how it looks later on in life." Wrinkles, sunspots, and skin cancer don’t appear overnight, which is why it is crucial to take the best possible care of your skin during this stage of your life. Dr. Mardirossian says he regularly receives the same questions and concerns: Are using the right skin care products crucial? Are quality products better than quantity? Should you see a dermatologist in your 20s to prepare for your 50s? "We have board certified dermatologists and facial experts in NYC, Boston, Palm Beach, FL and Springfield, MO available to answer these questions. They can explain how important proper skin care is and when to begin to the prevention process to prepare for ageing."
All products are free of allergens, fragrance, coloring, animal testing, parabens, and glycols. All vegan food quality ingredients. Safe for children under 3 years of age. Replete is EU certified.

He is double Board-certified in both Facial Plastic surgery and Head and Neck Surgery and has authored many studies on pivotal topics within the realm of Facial plastic surgery. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Padua in Italy, where he graduated Summa cum Laude in 2000. Dr. Mardirossian completed his Residency in Head and Neck Surgery in Padua, Italy and moved to Boston where he performed research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Later, he completed an internship
FSHN: How do you interact with the sun? Do you use sunscreen? Dr. Mardirossian: Since I was a young boy my exposure to the sun has been strategically timed to build up a gradual natural resistance. It was important to never suddenly overexpose my skin due to the high amount of skin damage caused by sunburns. My mother would bring us into the strong Black Sea sun at the beginning of summer season in June starting with 5 minutes the first day and then would add another five minutes to each day till we reached 30 minutes of exposure to the sun in one day. After that we were ready to play outside as much as we wanted, never using any sunscreen or other chemicals on our skin. By the end of two months in the sun, we made a point to stay outside less when the sun was at its strongest in the month of August. FSHN: When is the sun strongest to damage us? Dr. M: Strangely enough most people plan their va-
in General Surgery, followed by a residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Boston University. Further, advanced training was obtained with a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery through Boston University with the world-renowned facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Spiegel. During the Boston marathon bombing, Dr. Mardirossian was part of the team of Surgeons who took care of the victims and thanks to his determination and prompt decision-making he saved a young patient from permanent facial disfigurement. Because of his contribution, he was awarded a certificate of appreciation from Boston Medical Center and the City of Boston for his service during the tragedy. www.PalmBeachPlastics.com www.RepleteSkincare.com
cation in the month of August when the sun is the strongest and most damaging to our skin. We have watched people expose their skin to the sun all day long for ten days straight and get burned to a crisp by the end of their vacation. This is the perfect way to cause damage. FSHN: Is too late to rebuild skin after 30? Dr. M: The good news is that our skin is repaired and rebuilt every night as we sleep - from the nutrients we have provided our body with, during the day or in our nightly skin care regiment. So it is never too late to change habits and repair our skin with some help from inside and outside. The goal is to have resilient skin and to build this resilience with natural intelligence from natural plants in combination with our own smart behaviors that give the skin time to adapt to the environment of each season. We and our actions and decisions play a major role in the skin we have.

FSHN: You were working as a high school teacher before you started your brand evyï. How did that happen? evyï: I’ve always been passionate about fashion and decided to make my own scarfs to protect me from the cold German winters! I made a few and was stopped many times in Frankfurt by people asking where they came from, and when the famous blogger and owner of Hayashi, Kerstin Görling (http://www.journelles.de/ author/kerstin/) (http://hayashi-shop.com/) asked, I decided to start my label evyï. In early 2012, Kerstin took my first scarfs into her product line at Hayashi, where my first pieces were sold in-between brands like Acne, Helmut Lang!
Most importantly each product is hand-knitted here in Germany, ensuring the labels high degree of individuality.
FSHN: Your brand does not stop growing. What are the key facts about your products and your brand philosophy that makes it so successful? evyï: What evyï stands is very straightforward: highquality accessories and clothing. The clean and minimalist lines of the contemporary designs coupled with the soft, open mesh knit creates a feeling of warmth and lightness for everyday urban life.
FSHN: What are your plans for the future? What will happen next? evyï: We’re very excited about the future! We’re currently working on an upcoming kid’s collection of accessories and clothing for next season, we want to offer a mother and child look.

FSHN: After 4 years - where do you still get your inspirations from for your new collections and the new designs? evyï: I get inspired every single day as daily life in Berlin is so unique and engaging. I’m both subconsciously influenced and inspired by the colors and styles of clothes I see daily. The more patterns and colors catch my eye, the more I have to use them for future collections!
Additionally, we are expanding our production from the current family business to allow us to look at the kid’s collection and keep focused on our key product line.

MONTHLY MENSWEAR
Men and Fashion:
the revolutionary change
by Joyce Darkoh
Once upon a time, people believed that menswear fashion would only bloom in fashion induced cities like New York. "For a long time, Manhattan was the epicenter of all creative thought," says Josh Peskowitz, "but now I feel like that’s changed." Peskowitz is the former men’s fashion director of Bloomingdale’s, who opened Magasin, the first independent retail store for menswear in Los Angeles, on February 20th. This month we asked a true expert about his styling and spending habits when it comes to fashion, Ryan Beyer is the style coordinator for the famous menswear store Stitched Las Vegas.
FSHN: How important is fashion / “dress to impress” to you? Ryan Beyer: Fashion to me is paramount in so many ways. On one hand, it is an outward expression of my personality. I'm usually mixing colors and patterns, and trying to have fun with my clothing. On the other side, when you really put yourself together, the world looks at you differently. The world takes you seriously, and I think you have more confidence when you're put together. FSHN: Describe your favorite outfit. RB: My favorite suit is probably a navy suit with a
228
white windowpane. I'll usually throw a check shirt underneath, with a bold stripe tie. I love to combine red, yellow and blue. FSHN: How much money do you spend on clothes per month on average? RB: I buy about 3 suits and 2 jackets each season, but I wear a suit or jacket daily. I sell custom menswear, so I try to be a walking advertisement. I'd say I average about $1000 each month. LOVE
In Consideration of Consideration by Jason Martineau
Recently a friend of mine shared a story about breaking up with the man she was dating because of a sandwich. I thought, “That must have been a seriously awful sandwich.” She then clarified that it was because of the lack of a sandwich. Apparently she had done some thoughtful things for him earlier that day, laundry, paying for breakfast…then later, as she napped in his bed while he was away, he came home with some food for lunch and proceeded to eat it right in front of her. He didn’t bring any food for her, however. Nothing. Didn’t even ask. So quickly it became clear that this was not about the sandwich that was missing, but about the consideration that was missing. This highlighted a deeper, underlying problem in her feeling appreciated or cared about by the guy. It seemed as if he only thought of himself. Of course, when she aired her grievance, perhaps, let’s say, a tad strongly, his shocked response was simple: “You’re breaking up with me because of a sandwich?!” It was as if he didn’t get it at all. So what does it mean to be considerate? Is it the adherence to a set of vague and unspoken moral imperatives, externally imposed upon us by some questionable authority? Is it the reflection of a capacity to take perspectives other than our own, to genuinely care about another person, and to express it? Is it mere politeness and etiquette? Something in between? Another friend shared with me his repeated consternation with the virtual interactions between him and his new girlfriend. He said that he would send her things like “goodnight,” “I miss you,” “I love you,” “I’m thinking of you,” randomly at times, throughout a given day. Not very often, just here and there. Most of the time her text replies were the same: “Thank you.” “I’m good how are you?” “See you soon,” or at other times, silence. He began to wonder if she
256
even liked him, sometimes, even though when they were together the issue didn’t seem to come up as much. Whenever she would reply coolly, or not at all, he felt a slight sense of disappointment, and after a while it hurt his feelings; because, as he revealed, he felt close to her. It was like offering a handshake, and getting a “dead fish.” One time, she even asked him why he says, “I love you” on the phone at the end of a call. “Is it because you need reassurance? Are you insecure? Of course I love you, why do I have to say it every time you say it? Why do you keep bringing it up?” He was completely bewildered. At first I wondered if this was just a symptom of a deeper problem, so I asked if it was a long-term relationship. It turns out that they’d been together just 5 months. Long enough perhaps to fall in love, and short enough to not have reached the phase when miscommunications or misunderstandings start to happen. He then shared with me that when he brought this up with her – not angrily, and without blame, but simply drawing her attention to the seeming discrepancy or lack of balance in consideration – she felt like he was complaining. In fact, she had no idea what he was talking about, and to her it seemed that he was perpetually unhappy with her, which ultimately would make her mad. She felt criticized. She’d withdraw for a while, berate him for saying such things, blaming him for what to her appeared to be some kind of inner emptiness which he was attempting to get her to fill. To her he seemed to be judging her, no matter how he worded things, even when he expressly pointed out that this was not how he felt about her, and that he loved her. It was as if she could not understand him at all. I thought about these two friends and their stories for a while. I then reflected upon the notion of a “social contract” – a very loose set of behavioral anticipations we all have when dealing with others. For
SUMMER FASHION ISSUE 2016
people in public who are strangers to each other, it’s much more basic: give others space, don’t hurt them, and so on. Society functions in part based upon this mysterious code of ethics, and the police and people with smartphones are around whenever we deviate too far. When the code doesn’t function well, things go badly. When we are intimate with someone, naturally the stakes are far higher, and the kind of treatment and consideration we wish for ourselves we generally equate to the level that we are willing to offer. And every time, the one who is willing to offer more, is the one who eventually becomes the disappointed one. If you feel as though your partner lacks consideration for you at times, either your feelings, your welfare, or your hunger – then it might be time to decide whether you want to try and help the person learn (if they are willing), or if they in fact just have a different internal rulebook from yours. If you really think about it, the kinds of things we feel are missing when we are experiencing a lack of consideration, are usually
things we feel we should not have to ask for. The joy in being considered by another is that they do it freely, of their own intention and desire. To ask for it, and then receive it, lessens its impact, and even calls it into question as to whether it is sincere. The reality may be, that people are just wholly different in this arena. Some are more considerate of others, some are not. Some are more empathic, some perhaps more narcissistic. There is a long list of reasons for this, whether cultural, formative, or behavioral; it’s a complex equation. I’m not going to rank these styles of relating, I think people are allowed to be however they are – but in seeking partners with whom we want to feel close, and safe, it is ideal that whatever level of consideration they naturally tend toward, that it be aligned with our own level. Consider, then, that consideration, at whatever level, is best served mutually, and naturally…

ACTOR SPOTLIGHT
INTRODUCING
Malcolm Goodwin by Olivia Soto
Acting is an impressive talent in itself. But acting, producing, and directing takes some serious skill. Meet Malcolm Goodwin, the triple threat star who many would recognize from The CW’s comic book inspired television series, iZombie.
258
SUMMER FASHION ISSUE 2016
Giving The Walking Dead fans a comedic relief, the show is about an ex-medical student (Liv Moore aka Rose McIver) who got invited to a party that turned into a zombie chow down. After waking up from the dead, Liv learns that she has to feed on human brains in order to maintain her humanity. As she consumes corpses’ brains while working at a coroner’s office, she gains their memory and assists Detective Clive with murders, playing it off as a psychic. The comedic drama was recently picked up for its third season and seriously how could it not when it consists of an All-Star cast, which includes David Anders (The Vampire Diaries, Once Upon A Time), Aly Michalka (Easy A, Hellcats), Rose McIver (Once Upon A Time, Masters of Sex), and Robert Buckley (One Tree Hill). Goodwin plays the role of Detective Clive Babineaux and explained what makes his character very easy to portray. “He's a straight talker, extremely patient, and has tunnel vision. I can be a straight talker at times but I'm more patient than Clive, and I definitely have tunnel vision,” says the American Gangster actor. “Once my mind is set on something, it's hard to distract me with anything on the peripheral of that particular task.” No wonder why the man is so motivated to tackle three jobs! Goodwin holds an impressive and packed resume as he has directed and produced over 50 projects ranging from music videos to infomercials. To name a few, he has directed a coming of age film called A True Story, a romantic comedy called Construction and most recently, a family/faith flick called Pass the Light that is set to premiere later this year. “Most of the films I've worked on have been too mature for my nieces and nephews to see, so I wanted to make a film that they could watch alongside other young people,” the director describes as his motivation for making this movie.
“It's about a 17-year-old kid who tries to run for Congress because he's unhappy with the message of intolerance that the current candidates are preaching. It's a film I am extremely proud of that has received standing ovations at hundreds of screens throughout the country and has been critically acclaimed.” Although he has a lot to be proud of, one particular accomplishment stands out from the rest for the actor. “My proudest moment was booking Miracle at St. Anna,” Goodwin humbly states. “When I made it to the final auditions in front of Spike Lee, my focus was at an all-time high. Growing up in Brooklyn, Spike Lee was a hometown hero and we loved him and his work in the neighborhood.” “As a black actor, I thought working in a Spike Lee Joint was a rite of passage because some my favorite actors growing up like Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, Samuel L. Jackson, and Giancarlo Esposito worked with him. When I booked that job, it was a rite of passage in my mind so it allowed me to dream bigger and believe that I could have a career in this business.” Catch up on the suspenseful and hilarious iZombie series here to watch Malcolm in his most unique role yet. “Things are about to hit the fan in a big way,” says Goodwin. “There are quite a few story lines playing out this season with, Max Rager, The Chaos Killer, Mr. Boss, Blaine's Lucky U product, Ravi trying to find the cure to stop a zombie outbreak, Clive trying to solve the Meat Cute Massacre with Bozzio and poor Liv caught up right in the middle of it all.” “All of these story lines come to head in a very shocking and crazy way so the fans should definitely stay tuned.”

CELEBRITY FEATURE
Eugene Kim
The man who gives "The Bachelor" a run for his money with his humor, brains, and A-list costar by Olivia Soto
If someone had told college boy Eugene Kim that he would one day be cast in a movie that consisted of A-listers like, George Lopez and Octavia Spencer, well, he would probably just laugh in your face then proceed to study for his finals that contain big words like, “idiosyncrasies.” You see, as a graduate with a BA in psychology from Pepperdine University, acting was not in the cards for him at all until he got into his senior year and witnessed his cousin audition for commercials. “I thought ‘That could be fun,’” Kim says. “I auditioned to study at the Groundling Improv School and got in. From there I got into a sketch comedy group where I met my current VO Agent and Commercial Agent. I booked a few national commercial spots and did some voice over work. I got into stand-up shortly after.” And the rest is history [in the making]. But before the journey to acting began, a young Eugene used his time for another fulfilling passion of his. “In high school, I volunteered at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and worked with kids with mental and physical disabilities. I fell in love with it,” says the accomplished actor. “The work was challenging and extremely fulfilling. I also volunteered at the Maryland State Attorney Generals Office’s Consumer Protection Division and shadowed mediators. That sparked my interest in couples and family therapy. When it was time to choose a major, it made sense to study both child psychology and therapy.” Kim’s degree hasn’t gone all to waste though; in fact he considers it an advantage when studying new characters. “I now get to use what I studied when I need to understand who my character is, his idiosyncrasies- how he ticks,” Kim says. Fast-forward to present-time and the actor’s resume is fully loaded with voice-overs, a successful career in stand-up comedy, and a leading role in a SXSW film, Sake Bomb. The list continues to grow. Sake Bomb was the catapult for the actor as television and film

opportunities were of abundance. A group of Arizona State University students created a script for a movie called Car Dogs that got the attention of a variety of A-list actors, such as George Lopez, Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), Patrick Adams (Suits), and Octavia Spencer (The Help). Kim was cast as a cars salesman who has a hard time making ends meet. “My buddy Josh Hopkins (Cougartown, Quantico) sent me the script and asked me if I wanted to be a part of the project. After reading the script and a lot of thought (actually, practically no thought), I agreed. It was the easiest booking I’ve ever experienced,” says the comedian. Also on Kim’s plate is a role on Showtime’s television series “Dice”. The show focuses on the comedic legend that was Andrew Dice Clay, who was the first comedian to sell out Madison Square Garden two nights in a row. Now, Dice is attempting to change his image into the legend that still is (only as a character of himself on the show, not in real life). “My character, David, marries into Dice’s family. David is introduced in the show as a gay man who isn’t fond of Dice because of his stand-up act. He represents all of the men and women who think Dice’s act embodies who he really is. I loved playing
him. He’s genuine, blunt and passionate,” says the educated psychologist. Rewinding back to his familiar roots, Kim is currently making his way back into comedy clubs doing what he has been itching for in his life. “I love being on stage, there’s nothing like it. I love entertaining, and stand-up is entertaining to the extreme. It’s such an adrenaline rush,” says Kim. “I love acting on-screen for different reasons. It’s like taking a picture with an old-school, film camera. You have to wait, learn patience, and hope the final ‘picture’ is great. Someone has to look at the negatives, retouch where needed, and develop the film. There’s an art to it.” “You film, and then you have let it go. The gratification happens way after - sometimes years after. That said, there’s so much pleasure in seeing it turn out great after doing the work, walking away and surrendering to patience.” Kim’s comedic inspirations are Louis CK, Jim Gaffagan, and Ali Wong. MUSIC EVENT
bottlerock review With a winning three-day formula that included great weather, a sold out attendance of over 120,000 people from all walks of life, top wineries, impressive food hosted by rockstar chefs and of course some of the World’s best artists, the 4th annual BottleRock Music & Arts festival soared to new heights, leaving little doubt that one of the Nation’s youngest music festivals has found its groove in Wine Country. It was clear from the time you stepped into the Napa Expo, which has hosted the festival since its inception, that things were far more organized, which immediately gave you a sense of ease that this was going to be an exceptional holiday weekend. Organizers, Latitude 38 Entertainment out did themselves with a great stage production, far more food options then previous years that included also a great food truck courtyard, more arts and exhibits and even though there was a larger attendance, there seemed to be more room to move around and breathe. “BottleRock Napa Valley fans have proven that this is a must-attend event,” said Dave Graham CEO & co-founder of Latitude 38 Entertainment. “The fans are the reason why BottleRock is what it is today.” Over three days and multiple stages, music fans were treated to incredible music with highlights from Fantastic Negrito, who brought his Oakland bluesy rock flare to the family stage, Michael Franti and his good vibe music on the Jams Cellar stage, followed with incredible hit fueled sets by superstars Lenny Kravitz and headliner Stevie Wonder who owned night one and drew one of the biggest crowds. Days two and three were no exception as the great weather continued, musical highlights belonged to Walk The Moon, The Struts, Bob Marley’s oldest offspring Ziggy Marley, Atlas Genius, Misterwives and ended on high notes with a magical performance by vocal powerhouse Florence + The Machine as a sea of eager fans swayed along. Of course the weekend wouldn’t be complete without Anthony Kiedis, Flea and company – the Red Hot Chili Peppers – who brought their A game, playing some of their biggest hits to a massive jam packed crowd that stretched out from the Jams Cellar stage all the way to the end of the park on closing out the festival and leaving fans cheering for more. Other festival highlights included the popular Williams – Sonoma Culinary stage that hosted daily cook-offs pairing celebrity chefs with musicians that included a rare appearance by, “Up In Smoke” comedians Cheech & Chong who cooked up smoked salmon with Chef Chris Cosentino, Chef Michael Voltaggio gave RHCP’s Chad Smith a firsthand cooking lesson and a Vietnamese spring roll cook-off with Chef Charles Phan competing against members of Misterwive’s & X-Ambassadors.
Other attractions included local wineries and breweries on hand to showcase their newest selections, the silent disco which seems to get bigger each year, the elaborate VIP and platinum areas that included a tented lounge bar where major & local artists played acoustic stripped down sets and of course the location itself, which sits right smack in the heart of downtown Napa Valley, California, considered the Countries wine mecca. All in all, BottleRock Napa delivered on all levels and fans made their appreciation known with screams and applause, as 2017 dates were announced on the jumbotrons (May 26, 27 & 28, 2017) and leaving everyone in anticipation of what BottleRock and Latitude 38 Entertainment has in store for next year! Hello, everyone. The year continues to heat up with new festivals launching and lots of great tours including the highly anticipated Guns & Roses reunion. It's going to be a great summer in music, especially for The 1975, Deftones, Gwen Stefani, M83, PJ Harvey, Katy B, Kygo, and Pet Shop Boys. In music news, Swedish superstar DJ Avicii has announced that he will be retiring from touring. In a heartfelt letter to fans, he states he has been struggling with this decision but has finally decided that his upcoming tour will be his last. As one of EDM’s brightest stars, with massive hits like “Levels”, “Wake Me Up” and “Hey Brother,” Avicii has headlined the biggest festivals worldwide, played at the best clubs and is still one of the highest paid DJ’s in the world commanding as much six-figure paydays. His decision came after many challenges on and off the road that included health problems and most recently a need to make a change in his lifestyle. Only time will tell if he will return to the road, but for now, fans can still catch him headlining upcoming festivals like EDC UK, Creamfields and a slew of other dates this year. In event news, San Francisco’s Outsidelands festival returns to Golden Gate Park on August 5th for its 2016 edition featuring Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, Lana Del Rey, Duran Duran, Ryan Adams, Air, Major Laser and many more. Okeechobee had an epic 1st year with over 40,000 fans flocking to South Florida to camp and listen to great music that included stellar performances by Kendrick Lamar, Portugal The Man and an awesome PoWoW! that featured members of Arcade Fire, Skrillex, and Miguel. In other event news, Ultra Music Festival also had one of their best year to date with a sold out attendance and lots of great live performances from Chet Faker, Miike Snow, Pendulum & Knife Party, which featured a surprise guitar set from Tom Morello.
