Frequently Asked Questions

First Year Abroad FAQs What is the First Year Abroad (FYA) Program? The FYA program allows students to spend the first three semesters (Fall, Spring, & Summer) of their Florida State careers studying abroad in any of FSU’s four study centers in: London, England; Florence, Italy; Panama City, Republic of Panama; and Valencia, Spain.

Who is eligible for FYA? All students admitted to FSU for the fall or summer terms, or through the Seminole Pathways program, are eligible to spend their First Year Abroad. Early application is advisable as program enrollment is limited and acceptances are offered on a rolling basis.

Students spend the fall and spring terms in the same location and may opt to change locations for the summer term, though visa and travel restrictions may apply.

Certain majors (Dance, Music, Interior Design, Nursing) may be incompatible with FYA due to strict academic mapping requirements. Contact IP-Freshmen@fsu.edu for more information.

Why Should I participate?

What are some tips for getting accepted to FSU?

The benefits of First Year Abroad include small classes, engaged faculty, exceptional student support systems, and co-curricular cultural experiences that allow students to make the world their classroom. Plus, non-Florida residents who successfully complete the program with 36 credit hours and a cumulative 3.0 FYA GPA qualify for FYA Tuition waivers – allowing them to pay in-state tuition rates for the remainder of their first undergraduate degree at FSU. Florida residents, who take 14 credits per semester abroad and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher will receive up to $3,000 off the FYA program fee.

Florida State receives applications from all 50 states and over 130 countries. Admission is competitive, and students interested in FYA should apply early to FSU. FSU admissions typically open in the summer with priority application deadlines in mid-fall. For specific deadlines, visit admissions.fsu.edu/first-year/deadlines/

How do students apply to FYA? FYA acceptance is granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Upon receiving an FSU acceptance decision or Seminole Pathways offer, students select their preferred study center by applying via the IP website on or before May 1: international. fsu.edu/FYA.aspx

What is included in the FYA program fee? Program fees vary by location but are comprehensive and include up to 49 credit hours; housing; international health insurance; day trips, overnight excursions, site visits, and cultural activities; on-site pastoral support; meals & group dinners (variable by location); and visas (Florence, Panama, and Valencia). 2023-2024 FYA Program Fees: Florence London Panama Valencia
