Descriptions of the Innovations Showcase Presentations, Assessment Workshop and Academic Spaces Tour The Innovations Showcase features a series of visual presentations by architects, librarians and corporate stakeholders who have successfully worked with libraries, college and universities to develop academic learning spaces. The showcase will offer real-world innovations and ideas for you to take home, and an opportunity to speak with colleagues with experience in developing and working in academic learning spaces.

The Space Assessment Workshop is a hands-on opportunity for attendees to learn and practice a variety of assessment techniques successfully used in academic space planning, including charrettes, personas and two types of photo studies. The workshop will include case studies with students as mock subjects, allowing attendees to practice each technique in a small group setting. Attendees will also develop student personas as a method to communicate study results to administrators and other stakeholders.

The Academic Spaces Tour offers participants an opportunity to explore a variety of academic learning spaces.

Tallahassee Community College’s Learning Commons is a comprehensive, integrated learning center providing learning assistance and resources to students in the areas of math, science & communications.

•

The Albert J. and Judith A. Dunlap Student Success Center opened in 2008 and includes 47,000 square feet of classrooms, meeting rooms, and computer labs. It is home to the FSU Center for Leadership and Civic Education and the Career Center.

Opened in Spring 2002, the Maguire Medical Library at the Florida State University College of Medicine is the first academic medical library created in the 21st century.

FSU’s Strozier Library houses two distinct commons. The Scholars Commons opened in December of 2008 with staffing, services, resources and spaces developed specifically for faculty and graduate students. The Learning Commons opened in March 2010 with staffing, services, resources and spaces to support undergraduate student success. Both developments are grounded in ethnographic research of user needs. FSU Libraries has a unique staffing model, with audience-based departments rather than functional departments.

About Our Keynote Speakers Alan Cattier is the Director of Academic Technology Services at Emory University. He has led this division of University Technology Services for nine years. He is responsible for providing strategic coordination and operational management for faculty and student academic computing support across the University. Alan is an avid outdoorsman and co-author of An Outdoors Guide to Bartram's Travels. Whenever the computers decide to give him a rest, he teaches in the English and Environmental Studies departments where he lectures on literature and the environment. Alan holds a BA from Dartmouth and an MA from Middlebury.

Crit Stuart recently retired as ARL program director for Library Roles in Research, Teaching, and Learning.

His office assisted ARL member libraries in developing and implementing imaginative and practical strategies to promote and facilitate the integration and use of research library resources and services throughout the research institution. Prior to 2007, Stuart’s career was spent at Georgia Tech Library and Information Center. As senior associate director for public services, he coordinated the evolution of library as place, emphasizing enhancements to spaces, technologies, and services to support student productivity and success in a 24-hour environment. He also expanded partnerships between the Library, students, student support services, and faculty. Georgia Tech Library received ACRL’s University Library of Excellence Award in 2007. Stuart has consulted extensively with research libraries to create learning spaces imbued with programs, information resources, staff, and partnerships to facilitate student and faculty success. He has been a frequent program and workshop speaker at EDUCAUSE Learning Initiatives, Project Kaleidoscope, Society for College and University Planners, and various research library venues.

Lisa Waxman, Ph.D., is a professor and director of the graduate program in the Interior Design department at Florida State University. She has a BS in Interior Design from Florida State University, an MS in Interior Design from Oregon State University, and a Ph.D. in Art Education from Florida State University. Her current research includes the design of third places and spaces that foster community, as well as housing for people with special needs. She is a NCIDQ certificate holder, a LEED AP, and a licensed interior designer in Florida. She is currently the President-Elect of the Interior Design Educators Council. She teaches research methods, computer-aided design, environment and behavior, sustainability, and graduate studio.
