Belly Dancers Showcase Talents By Kestrel L. Ambrose
The FSU Belly Dancers will host their spring showcase at Café Shisha on Friday, April 8, at 7 p.m. The mission of the organization, founded on FSU’s campus in 2005, is to enrich the lives of students by promoting cultural diversity, self-esteem and good health. The dancers offer free beginner’s classes, and intermediate classes are offered for $2 per session. They also offer free workshops to other RSOs. “We aren’t just a dance group, “said Ebony Olivier, who serves as the groups fundraising chair and a co-instructor. “Our purpose is to promote women’s health and induce the love of your body.” The Belly Dancers teach and mentor a group of young girls at Raa Middle School on a regular basis. There will be a Belly Dancers showcase on Tuesday, April 12, at 1 pm. Students can take a belly dancing workshop on April 16 at 12 pm for $5. Another showcase will take place on April 16 at 7 pm in Moore Auditorium. “In order to become a member of the FSU Belly Dancers, students can take the beginners and intermediate classes and learn a routine to audition for the troupe,” Olivier said. Auditions are held at the end of each semester. The next audition will take place on Tuesday, April 12, at 6 pm in Union Room 302. Paintball Team Targets Victory at Championships By Yanique Banton
Team member dodging a paintball
Tournament Paintball at FSU hopes their teamwork and problemsolving skills will result in victory at the National Championships. President Ryan Bixler said the team will compete in the tournament April 16 – 17 in Lakeland, Fla.
“We play up to six tournaments a year, five conference tournaments against other schools from the southeast, finishing with the National Championship Tournament in April, where we compete against teams from all over the country,” said Bixler. The club’s 14 members meet at the beginning of each semester in the Union and during the semester at the field before practice. They practice in Tallahassee and at tournaments all over the southeast. “Our goals are always to win tournaments and gain the highest national ranking possible,” Bixler said. “Currently we are ranked 21 in the nation and looking to improve that ranking after the conference and national championship tournament.” Bixler got involved with the club, founded in 2004, in the fall of 2008 initially as a player. Later, serving as the club’s secretary, he coordinated and planned travel to and from tournaments. “The experience has been fantastic,” he said. “Being part of the club has helped to introduce me to many other students who share similar interests. It also allows for travel around the south to tournaments in places I normally would not have traveled to.” For more information, visit the Facebook group Tournament Paintball at FSU.

Chuck it for Charity is a program of the FSU Sustainable Campus Initiative and Housing and Residence Life to collect all the “stuff” that is usually thrown out during student move-out. The material is weighed, sorted and redistributed to Tallahassee area community agencies in support of their work and the people they help. This year the FSU community is invited to donate personal items gathered during any “spring cleaning” efforts on Saturday, April 23, from 9 am - 3 pm at the collection warehouse (1238 Crate Street, off of Airport Drive & Eppes Drive). For a complete list of items to donate, visit http://sustainablecampus.fsu.edu/chuckit.html **Please NO broken items or hazardous waste. TIPS, SGA Student Publications, April 2011, Vol. 3, No. 12
