Jasper, the manager of the Cazbar, turned his sleepy head slowly in our direction. In the past hour that I was talking to this journalist from LA, he had been quietly doing his own stuff on his computer. My LA visitor was Griselda who, together with her Dutch cameraman Amando, were in Indonesia to do the finishing touches on a book about the Belanda Hitam, or Black Dutchmen. Sitting at the long table in Cazbar, we had been talking about Endjie, my exwaitress in BuGils, who looked like an African and who had been the reason for my investigation into her African roots some years before. Griselda talked about her own search of descendants of the 3000 Ghana slaves that were turned into Dutch KNIL soldiers in the first half of the 19th century. For the past 5 years she had managed to trace back some of these black KNIL descendants, who nowadays were shattered all over the world. A very few descendants were still here in Indonesia, mostly in the region of Semarang or Purworedjo, where there is still a Kampung Africa.

the last chapter of her book Black Skin, Orange Heart, that will now feature Jasper as a direct descendant from the imported Africans to the Indies. After some research in the past week it turned out that he is not a descendant from just one side, but two!

He moved the computer towards Griselda, who was still white faced sitting with her hands for her mouth. “Oh my, God...”, she repeated, “Den Dekker is the one African I have not been able to trace any descendants from.. This is scary.... This cannot be true....”. The picture of the old Den Dekker, Jaspers’ grandfather who had died a few years earlier, showed a weary old-but indeed very dark man. and as far as I knew, he was a typical Dutch boy from the city of Arnhem. And although he was known for sleeping a lot, who would ever believe he was a long lost brother of Khofi Annan!? “I believe I am a Zulu...”, he said calmly.

My grandfather was born in Indonesia, and the rumor in the family was that he was from African descent, but nobody ever gave me details...”. Griselda bowed for-
names on the trip from Africa to the Dutch Indies and a short course in army training. It is an interesting part of history not many people know about. And here we have one managing Dutch bars in Indonesia!

covery at the Stammtisch (German word for something like “regular’s table” or “regular get-together”) in Cazbar, I found - by complete coincidence - a lithograph printed in 1840, of an African soldier in the Dutch Indies. I was looking for some frames in a print-shop in Kemang and just pulled a drawer, when this African soldier in KNIL uniform was smiling to me. Griselda had never seen this particular print before, obviously a rare item. It felt like I had hit jackpot. The print is now proudly on display in Bartele Gallery (4th floor above the Cazbar). News Indonesia improves its often criticised visa on arrival system

At long last (and almost three years after VP Jusuf Kalla first announced it), it seems that Indonesia’s Immigration Department has listened to the complaints of international tourists regarding the visa on arrival scheme. Source: Indonesiamatters.com Many complaints centered
on its short duration (maximum 30 days) - which made travel to more remote parts of the archipelago virtually impossible. Some tourists also suggested very long queues at airports to buy them was not exactly the most positive or welcoming first impression of Indonesia, particularly after a long flight.

Visas On Arrival Up To 60 Days. As reported in The Jakarta Post, starting 26 January 2010 tourists can now have their $US25 30-day tourist visas extended by another 30 days. However, the details are not yet forthcoming from the Department of Immigration about where/how this could be done, nor how much it would cost. It suggests tourists - like their expat brethren - may need to use an immigration agent/fixer/broker to make it happen in a reasonable period of time. It was also announced that the $US10 7-day visa would no longer be offered.

The same newspaper has also reported that Indonesia’s national airline Garuda Indonesia also recently introduced a new visa service at Narita Airport in Tokyo, Japan. It allows visitors to avoid long queues at the airport’s visa counters and buy their visas on arrival before they arrive, i.e. before they board the plane. It is not known whether this service will also be rolled out to airports in the 63 other countries eligible for VOAs, or to other airlines flying to Indonesia. However, as Tourism Minister Mr Jero Wacik recently discovered on an impromptu visit to the international terminal at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport, it would probably be a good idea.

first casino in the city-state was officially opened on the resort of Sentosa Island. Resorts World Sentosa, owned by the Malaysian Genting group, is the first of only two casino’s that will be opened in the little country. This should bring in millions of new tourists. A second casino, Marina Bay Sands, will be opened in April and is owned by Las Vegas Sands. “Because of these new casino’s in Singa-
pore, an entirely new market is opened up for Southeast Asia. A new market where most likely billions - dollar’s that is, not Rupiah’s - can be made,” said Jonathan Galaviz, analyst in Las Vegas. Many Indonesians can now go to a casino just around the corner in Singapore, so the ever important traveling time is greatly reduced. Of course the Indonesian Council of
Islamic Scholars (MUI) just had to react on it. They said that gambling is a big no-no, complete sin and 110% haram for Islamic Indonesians. Sarjiyo, who is known by a single name or by the alias of Zaenal Abidin, recently sent a letter to the Denpasar District Court requesting that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono set a fixed sentence for him to serve, court official Posma Nainggolan said. The same court sentenced him in 2004 for helping assemble the bombs and planning the attacks on two nightclubs on Oct. 12, 2002.

Recipes of the Week CHICKEN CURMA Ingredients to use: Chicken 1 kg Sliced onion 1 cup Poppy seeds 2 tbsps Coriander seeds 1 tbsp Cumin seeds 1 tsp Fresh grated coconut ½ cup Curd (yogurt) 1 cup Garlic cloves 2 no Ginger paste 2 tsp Green cardamom 3 – 4 Dry red chili whole 2 Fresh cream ¼ cup Oil 3 tbsps Salt To taste Directions: 1. Cut the chicken into small pieces. 2. Soak poppy seeds in 1 cup warm water for 10 minutes. 3. Grind soaked poppy seeds with deseeded red chilies,coriander seeds, cummin
seeds, garlic, green cardamom and grated coconut. 4. Heat oil in a pan. Add sliced onions and cook till they are translucent. Add Ginger Paste and stir for 15 seconds. 5. Add chicken pieces and cook on high flame for 5 minutes stirring constantly. 6. Stir in the ground paste and add 1 cup of water. Add salt and bring it to a boil. Reduce flame and add beaten yogurt. Simmer for 5 minutes. 6. Finish with fresh cream.

A PRINT IN DETAIL - Waterboarding Practises by the Dutch Waterboarding Practises by the Dutch – The Amboyna Massacre The debate over the simulated-drowning technique may be new, but the practice is not. It predates the Inquisition and has been used, off and on, around the world ever since. The other technique — the one more widely used today — involves choking the victim by filling their throat with a steady stream of water — a sort of “slow-motion drowning” that was perfected by Dutch traders in 1622. They used it against their British rivals in the East Indies, who were suspected of plotting to capture the Dutch headquarters in Amboyna, East Indies. Wrote one observer about the Amboyna tortures and massacre: “They bound a cloth about his neck and

The annexation of the Dutch colony New Amsterdam (New York) was justified with a rather farfetched reference to the Amboyna Massacre. Waterboarding may be widespread,
but it has not been used everywhere. There’s no evidence that either the Nazis or the Soviets used the technique. These regimes weren’t concerned about public opinion, and so they often used harsher methods that left permanent scars or killed their victims.
