Derek Visser Biography

34 year old Derek Visser was born in Holland in 1974 to parents Anna-Marie, a chef and restaurateur, and Hendrik Visser a psychologist. His family moved several times and eventually settled opening a country resort, Centrum Commanster [www.mediardenne.com/centrumco] in the sleepy Belgian town of Vielsalm near the German border. As a young boy, Derek spent a lot of time with his Grandmother [on his mother’s side] and she often told him stories and recalled fond memories of her beloved country and birthplace, Indonesia. It was from her that Derek learned to speak Bahasa Indonesia, making it the fifth language he speaks. After listening to his Grandmother’s stories Derek was very intrigued and dreamed of the day when he could come and see everything Indonesia had to offer. As a teenager along with playing sports, making and performing music and studying martial arts Derek began taking over responsibilities at his family’s business. Along with stables, horses, and a hotel, Centrum Commanster has its own

Indonesian restaurant which Derek would soon become head chef and manager of. Derek’s mother would teach him to cook Indonesian cuisine with the traditional recipes passed down to her by her Great Grandmother, Derek’s Great Great Grandmother, owner of the famous “Hotel Des Indes” in Batavia, arguably the first 5 star Hotel and restaurant in all of Indonesia. Derek’s experience at the Centrum Commanster would allow him to move around Europe and work as a chef in several Hotels and Restaurants in Holland, Germany and Luxemburg. In 2002 Derek made his first voyage to Indonesia where he met up with some Belgian acquaintances in Jakarta. He fell in love with Indonesia immediately after arriving and soon fell in love with a local girl named Tio. Derek converted to Islam and married Tio and together they now have one son named Indy. 2006 Derek returned to Jakarta to visit his wife’s family and was doing a side job re-designing a menu for a small South Jakarta café. It was there that Derek was befriended by a television producer, who was impressed by his attitude, ambition and skills in the kitchen, together with Director Joshua Sutojo they would eventually go on to develop, write, create and produce the “Dapur Campur” pilot. After several trips back and forth between Belgium and Jakarta Derek sought after and eventually found a position as a restaurant/bar manager at a Dutch café in South Jakarta. He finds it very funny that after living in Belgium and running an Indonesian restaurant he is now living in Indonesia running a Dutch restaurant.
