Twice in a quarter of a century the province of Liège had the tragic misfortune of being on the front line of major clashes that involved Belgium – and, beyond that, the whole of Western Europe and even some of the world – in a disastrous and furious war. Constructed at the end of the 19th century, the «Fortified Position of Liège» consisted in six big forts: Barchon, Fléron, Boncelles, Flémalle, Loncin and Pontisse, and six smaller ones: Evegnée, Chaudfontaine, Embourg, Hollogne, Lantin and Liers.
In the frame of the commemoration events of the centenary for the begin of WWI, the Tourism Federation wishes to remember our army's heroic combative spirit, the enormous suffering experienced by our people and is also a reminder of how lucky we are today to be living in peacetime Europe.
