As we continue to grow and new families discover our organization, our footprint becomes more important than ever. Being able to project a positive image in today’s society requires a little effort from all of us in many ways. With so many platforms and sites available to showcase our organization and sport, curious minds want to know who we are and what all the excitement is all about! Being mindful of what we share and bring to the table goes a long way in not only producing positive experiences, but it also shows our sport as a whole and the type of content that is being paraded all over cyberspace. FTR has become one of the most looked at off-road or-
ganizations in the sport with many of our procedures being copied or duplicated in other organizations. Our association with the leading manufacturers in the industry brings a new meaning to the word sponsors and what they bring to the table.
The support from Moose Racing, FMF, Engine Ice, Rocky Mountain Race Gas program and the manufacturer’s contingency programs all benefit our members and our presence in the off-road world. As you read this, there is a tire manufacturer looking at us with interest and possible future involvement that could really up the level of support and promotion. All this comes from the continued positive outlook that we achieve on a daily
basis while offering a superb weekend of camping, racing and camaraderie within the membership. The continued efforts of all involved with the weekend activities makes our series one of, if not the best in off-road. The consistent results from our schedule times, our sign-up procedures and the scoring operation with over 99% scanning results makes our race weekends something we can count on. I know that is the level that other organizations are striving for as we continue to raise the bar.
Thanks for listening,

Starting Line to Checkered Flag…
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
As we just celebrated Resurrection Day (Easter), I again enjoyed the movie, “The Ten Commandments” with Charlton Heston as Moses. I grew up watching this movie and yet each time, I see something new.
As I was watching the scene with the burning bush, I noted the Name of God…I am!
“I am”… not I will be, or I was. He is eternally present. He has always been, He is now and He will always be. God speaks about His eternal presence with you. He is present to help,
comfort, guide, and so much more… His presence never leaves and He will always be with you. That is the greatest comfort we can ever find, and we learn it from the very name of God: I AM.
In John 8:58, Jesus applied the name of God on Himself. He shocked the religious leaders of Israel, when He made a statement that was unheard of since the beginning of time. Jesus Christ declared that He Himself is God, when He said:“Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”
When the Jewish religious leaders at the time heard Jesus say this, they tried to kill Him. By applying the very name of God on Himself, Jesus declared that He is God.
In the Revelation 1:7-9Jesus reveals Himself to the apostle John with a name that is very similar to ‘I AM”:
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who
is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” .
Jesus made it clear that He is the I AM, who appeared to Moses, He is the One who always existed and He is the one and true God who will always be.
Jesus used the Name of God as His own to show the way to God. In John 14:6-7 Jesus said, “I am the Road, also the Truth, also the Life. No one gets to the Father apart from me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him…”
Jesus is waiting to bring you to His Father. He wants to forgive your sins by you placing your faith in Him. Your next Resurrection Day will be the greatest you ever had!!!
Blessings on and off the road,
Jim and Betty Edleston Chaplain FTR
SPANISH VERSION
Línea de salida hacia la bandera a cuadros…
“He peleado la buena batalla, he terminado la carrera, he mantenido la fe”. 2 Timoteo 4:7

Hello FTR Family,
Let me share with you a recent example of a situation that I encounter regularly which demonstrates how imaging can negatively shape a patient’s belief system. I was helping a patient, “Mrs. Smith” with longstanding (10 years) shoulder pain. Sometimes the shoulder pain is severe, and she feels a click around the back of her shoulder which gives her immediate pain and stops her in her tracks. She has trouble moving her shoulder after that due to fear of pain and reports increased soreness after the snapping/clicking sensation. Mrs. Smith has had some other health issues over the past 5 years that have caused her to become deconditioned and increased her shoulder pain. After a thorough evaluation, I diagnosed her with joint laxity (looseness) of her right shoulder which sometimes causes a specific tendon which crosses that joint to get pinched which causes the sharp click/pain. I felt confident in my diagnosis as I was able to both recreate and
improve her symptoms at the evaluation.
What happens next is she sees another healthcare provider because she already had the appointment set before she saw me and gets a set of x-rays. I had already advised her against any need for imaging such as x rays, but she believed she needed it. The x-rays were negative, but the other healthcare provider believes her shoulder pain is due to her shoulder being too tight and stretches her shoulder which makes her feel worse. He also gives her shoulder stretches which she reports increase her pain. She decides not to go back to that healthcare provider and instead stays the course with me and physical therapy. She gradually gets better and reports her symptoms are 90% improved over our 6 sessions. However, she has an annual evaluation with her primary physician and mentions her shoulder pain to the physician's assistant during her session who orders an MRI, which her physician agrees to. The MRI reveals two early signs
of minor shoulder arthritis and a thickened tendon in her rotator cuff. The patient panicked and called me for advice on how to modify the treatment plan based on that latest information from her MRI. She asks me if she needs surgery or at the very least an injection to help fix these conditions that were seen on MRI. We may never be able to overcome the belief she now has that something is “wrong” with her.
She was doing great and now these MRI findings have her doubting her progress. Here is the great news that I shared with her…none of that MRI information has bearing on your treatment plan and is normal! You stick with the plan which has given you 90% improvement over the past 6 weeks for a problem you have had for 10 years. The conservative treatment (physical therapy) is working and depending on which study you cite a majority of MRI’s ordered in the United States are not medically necessary! And I shared with her a summary of
my favorite MRI comparison study from 2019 by Barreto et. al which I will share with you now.1
For this study they looked at 123 people aged 18-77 with shoulder pain on one side. But they did an MRI scan on both their painful and nonpainful shoulders and found abnormal MRI findings were highly prevalent in both shoulders! Here is the abnormal finding prevalence on each side.
- Rotator Cuff Tendon Pathology
92% in the painful side, 88% in the pain-free side.
- Rotator Cuff Tears: 26% in the painful side, 20% in the painfree side.
- AC Joint Arthritis: 91% in the painful side, 89% in the painfree side.
- Shoulder Bursitis: 54% in the painful side, 56% in the painfree side.
- Labral pathology: 44% in the painful side, 41% in the painfree side.
- Glenohumeral (Shoulder joint) Arthritis: 1.5% in the painful side, 1% in the pain-free side.
- The researcher’s conclusion stated, “Most abnormal MRI finders were not different in frequency between the symptomatic and asymptomatic shoulders.”
This study reinforces a couple of points about imaging. Firstly, if you put anyone through an MRI, they will see some sort of pathology. Secondly, the pathology found on the MRI may be a normal part of the aging process. We know this because we have studies like this one that show pathology in the absence of any pain. Lastly, even if pathology is present, this does not mean it is the cause of your pain. Look at all the pathology that was seen on the non-painful side. Heck there was even more bursitis on the non-painful side! If you were to put 100 people through an MRI, and 50 people had shoulder pain and 50 did not, there is no way for the radiologist to differentiate one type of patient from the other since they will see pathology on both patient films.

PRODUCT REVIEW: STARK VARG
Words: Kurt Lucas
The future is now. The Stark Varg has created some buzz in the moto world, and I was excited to get my hands on one of these electric machines to “test” for this article. Huge thanks to the guys at MyPowersports, Mike Hall (Sarasota Powersports) and Jason Ennis (Central Florida Powersports) for the opportunity to ride one of their demo bikes.
I think it took me about three seconds after unloading the bike
to turn it on and go for a rip around the neighborhood. I was blown away at the instant torque on this machine and I almost had my hands ripped off the bars numerous times. The next day I swapped out my gas can for a Predator 3500 generator and headed up to the Croom Motorcycle Area to see what the Stark Varg was all about.
On the handlebars of the Stark
Varg is a detachable cell phone like device that allows you to adjust power output and engine braking. The max power you can go up to on the bike is 80 horsepower, which is not needed for 95% of riders. It is insane how fast this bike can go and with no clutch I found myself getting whiskey throttle more times than I would like to admit. I chose Croom because it has a wide variety of trails from wide open
jeep roads, flowy whooped out trails, tight single track and even a small motocross track.
I decided to leave the bike as it was from the dealership. I made no changes to the sag, clickers and even left the power settings alone. I wanted to see how this bike performed straight from the manufacturer. The first thing I noticed when riding the bike is that I kept grabbing for the clutch and trying to shift gears, it was quite an adjustment. I started out with the 30-horsepower setting and man that was smooth as butter, it reminded me off one of the Beta Xtrainer with how the power was delivered. Next, I switched to the 40-horsepower setting and found this to be the best option for the tighter, more technical trails as it was just enough power to pull you through the corners, but the bike would not get away from you. The 50-horsepower setting was
great for the faster trails and would probably be the best setting for a hare scramble race as it was still very smooth but had plenty of top end speed to play with. Anything over that was a bit much for the dry sandy conditions, the only time I really enjoyed the higher horsepower settings was at the infamous Croom pit or the wide marked trails.
The bike weighs 252 pounds but feels very light and nimble in tight switchbacks and technical, slow sections. To me, the bike felt very rigid through the sand whoops and faster sections, but again I left the suspension alone so I am sure this could be fixed with some adjustments.
There were some things I did not like about the bike, however. The first thing I noticed was the sound, or lack thereof, of the bike. The bike produces a faint,
RC car-like, sound that makes you really feel like you are zipping around. The only problem is that this sound gets drowned out by the chain slapping, tires gripping, plastics flexing and forks compressing. I am telling you that you will hear everything, and it drove me crazy. Every root I hit I thought I was going straight over the bars. You don’t realize how much noise the chassis, suspension, and everything else makes when it is drowned out by the motor.
The other thing I did not like, and it is a big one, was the battery life. Sure, if you ride in the lower horsepower settings you could probably get a decent days’ worth of riding in. But every increase in horsepower is a decrease in battery life. The display sits right on the bars so I could watch as the battery rapidly lost life when in the higher settings and to be honest it was a bit disappointing. It was very dry that day at Croom so I would like to think the conditions played a role in how long the battery lasted. After I drained the battery the first time I hooked the bike back to the charger and let the bike charge for around two hours, only for the bike to get to 55% battery. Obviously, this makes it tough on a ride day to recharge your bike. I am hoping this will only get better with time as technology improves. It is looking like FTR will have an
electric bike class on Saturday’s next season and with the shorter race time the Stark Varg will be a popular bike in that class.
I decided to reach out to some other riders who have either spent some time on the bike or purchased a Stark Varg themselves to get some other opinions on the bike:
“Within 100ft I had an ear-toear grin on my face. I did a few warmup laps and adjusted the suspension and set sag for what I liked, and the bike just felt amazing. I turned some of the fastest laps I’ve ever done at my local track… you are always in the right gear and always the right rpm range. Also, the bike pulls forever without having to shift, it’s just endless power that doesn't run out. So, after a full day of riding the Stark, I'm sold and will most likely be buying one soon.” – Sean Daugherty
“It’s probably the best all-around bike that I have ever purchased. The ability to adjust the horse-
power settings and ease of maintenance is great. If only the battery would last two hours or more at the higher horsepower settings.” – John Hardiman
I think it’s a phenomenal bike right out of the box, especially from a new company in the industry. I don’t think it’s a replacement for the gas bikes but it’s definitely a great option for some people and if you’re an addict like me then it’s definitely worth having in the arsenal of toys. The only negative is battery life, but I knew that before purchasing one and know that the technology will only improve in time.”
- Derek TremainYou can purchase the Stark Varg from various dealerships, the MSRP is $12,900. For more info visit starkfuture.com
