ON THE COVER Craig Maddox weaves around a tree at the Far Reach Ranch Hare Scramble in Tavares, Florida. Craig would go on to finish eighth in Vet B. Turn to Page 16 to read more on the event.

EDITORS NOTE As I type this out I am just finishing up an awesome Thanksgiving feast capped off with some pumpkin pie (race food) and some lowfat vanilla ice cream (fitness is my passion). As I sit here, belly full and still sore from the Big Scrub race I can only help but be thankful for all the friendships and memories FTR has produced for me over the years.

Riding is about the only thing that has stayed consistent in my life. My first memories are from me on something with a motor. Like crashing my 50cc quad into a canal or burning my leg on a header pipe. My mom was stoked...not. I’ve gotten to travel the country all in the name of riding dirtDECEMBER 2020

bikes, spending quality time with my father and brother. Quality time that I feel is unmatched in other sports/ hobbies. I also want to reflect on all the friendships I’ve made throughout the years. It is pretty crazy to think I am still hanging out in the same cow pastures with the same great people for over 20 years now. The best part is there are plenty of FTR members that have the same experiences as I do. Okay, enough of the sappy stuff. Let’s go racing! Kurt Lucas Magazine Editor

PREZ SAYS still. The enjoyment of watching these kids come up through the classes is a true blessing and something that will always stay in my memory.

Keeping Memories As we are in full swing of both the Enduro and H/S series, we have some time during the holidays to regroup and get ready for a very busy second half. I mention the holidays, can you believe that it is December already and that another year is about over with! I don’t know where the time is going but it is moving right along. It wasn’t that long ago that all these little kids running around the campsites are now graduating and getting ready for life. Parents like the Lamb’s, Cone’s, Chambers’, Berard’s, McAfee’s, Rash’s and so many more FTR families bringing their children up around an environment like no other. Savor these moments in time and make memories as we continue to grow as life does not stand

I have been so very fortunate to experience and watch so many of our FTR children grow and mature. Many I have become very close with, but they’re all part of me. I must pick on one here as he was a little short chunky mini rider that was shy and quite. Now he can show up in AA and run lap times that would overall the day and give another “born in FTR rider” a fit known as the Sandman. Garrett was another mini rider that was brought into FTR as a kid and has wrapped up so many championships that he probably has lost count. There is also Jesse Ansley that has come through the ranks as a multi time champion and now resides in the XC2 Pro class in GNCC, he also started in FTR. Oh, and that short chunky mini rider that I forgot to mention, Jack Chambers. Jack is a full blown AMA title contender that can throw down in the moto world and his parents also started him in FTR many years ago as the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. GOOD STUFF

anymore. Not in a bad way, but our clubs are running out of real estate and we need to think about our parking. FTR has exploded with new members, old members coming back and our regular members renewing. With all this comes parking/camping and the acreage we used last year is not big enough this year. It’s a problem but a good one to have as it makes FTR stronger and we are able to do more for the membership. I ask this for our clubs sake, please park in parallel, side by side or a way where we don’t use up any extra room. You can still park awning to awning but try not to park in big squares and have an acre of land in the middle. Some of our events coming up are very limited on parking and with these 50/60 footers coming in the gates, parking will start being an issue. See you at the races, Randy Faul

On another note pertaining to our weekends, we may not be able to circle the wagons much

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER claim that we experience a shared life with him and continue to stumble around in the dark, we’re obviously lying through our teeth—we’re not living what we claim. But if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another, as the sacrificed blood of Jesus, God’s Son, purges all our sin”. Starting Line to Checkered Flag… “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7 At the Big Scrub race, we experienced the effect of the time change from Daylight Saving Time to Daylight Standard Time. The Quad race on Saturday afternoon ended at 5:01 with sunset that day at 5:30. The last riders and the sweepers returned in the dark! For most of us, 2020 has been a season of darkness. A year of chaos, confusion and uncertainty and with that, the underlying fear of the dark. God is all about beating the darkness. He is all about light! In John 1: 5-7 the author wrote,” This, in essence, is the message we heard from Christ and are passing on to you: God is light, pure light; there’s not a trace of darkness in him. If we

That light, through Jesus, is so powerful God compares it to the beginning of creation where His word says, “God spoke: “Light!” And light appeared. God saw that light was good and separated light from dark(Genesis 1:3). That darkness, the chaos we see around us, is addressed in Psalms 46:6-10. Godless nations rant and rave, kings and kingdoms threaten, but Earth does anything He says. God fights for us, God of angel armies protects us. Attention, all! See the marvels of God! He plants flowers and trees all over the earth,

9:6, For a child has been born—for us! the gift of a son—for us! He’ll take over the running of the world. His names will be: Amazing Counselor, Strong God, Eternal Father, Prince of Wholeness. His ruling authority will grow, and there’ll be no limits to the wholeness he brings. He’ll rule from the historic David throne over that promised kingdom. He’ll put that kingdom on a firm footing and keep it going With fair dealing and right living, beginning now and lasting always. That love of God for us is shown in John 3:16, “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting (eternal) life. Get to know the Jesus who loves you. Blessings on and off the road, Jim and Betty Edleston CMA

Bans war from pole to pole, breaks all the weapons across his knee. "Step out of the traffic! Take a long, loving look at me, your High God, above politics, above everything." God brought His Son, Jesus into the world just for that purpose. Isaiah

FAR REACH HARE SCRAMBLE RACE REPORT The Big Scrub Trail Riders put on a great event at the Far Reach Ranch in Tavares, Florida. This is the third year for this property and the club continues to find new ways to challenge the racers. It is no secret that this course is one of the most physically demanding on the schedule. “It is as tough mentally as it is physically,” says Chris Sprayberry, BSTR Club Member. This course features elements of a true Florida hare scramble, the kind our parents used to tell us about. The obvious is the soft, end-

less sugar sand that forms sharp and deep whoops that will swallow up even the best riders. In addition, you can find technical palmetto sections, slick black dirt, shiny roots, and tight pine sections. 2020 added another twist with a deep mud section that seemed to form out of thin air Sunday afternoon. Say what you want about the Blueberry Farm but just finishing this race is an accomplishment. On Saturday we saw FTR’s newest class go into effect,

Peewee Beginner, with 11 total riders. This class is for 50cc air-cooled bike (think PW 50 and CRF 50) and allows for the Peewee C line to be split, due to a high volume of riders entering this class. Usually, new class changes take at least a season to go into effect but this was deemed a safety issue, therefore an Emergency Rule Change. In Peewee A we saw Dustin Steffey continue his dominance winning his fourth race in a row. I’ll tell you what, if you have the chance head over to watch the little

guys and girls race because these kids absolutely shred. Big shoutout to David Couto, Maria Jose Tilleria, Gentry McBride. Owen Franckowiak, Tyler Griffin, Bentley Loudermilk and Kaden Hamilton for taking the win in their races as well. On Sunday afternoon we saw “The Sandman” Garrett Edmisten on an unfamiliar color. The longtime Kawasaki rider, and more recently Suzuki, borrowed a KTM 350 and took it to a victory in the AA

class beating Scott Gawler Jr. by less than a second! Glenn Currey, Kyle Turnis and Blake Yahraus would take the win in A 250, A Open and A 200. Sunday morning saw another intense battle between Shawn Clark and Clay Lyons in Vet A. Clark would eventually pull away at the end to claim the win. Huge shoutout to Chad Hunter with a win in Master A and a fifth overall! That is pretty fast for an old man! The Saturday 12:15 race saw

Logan Crawford claim the top spot in Mini A over Linkin Bischoff and Clayton Browning. Tyler Lamb would take the win in 65 A and finish up sixth overall on his KTM 65. Jacob Berard looked great on his YZ250 to claim the Pre-Modern A win and Saturday 2pm overall over Evo rider Kyle McAfee. Korbin Dinkel made it two wins in a row for him in Junior A. Brandon Frazier took home the quad overall over Chuck Piper and Michael Relyea.

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD “What is your favorite FTR race and why?” Tyler Bergen

Definitely back in the day 10+ years ago, when Gatorback had the huge woods loop throughout all of the limestone mining pits. It was off the chain!

Amber Trapnell

I’d have to say Mondon Hill (Brooksville) because of how technical the Sunday course is. I love challenging myself with the hills and mx section.

Editor’s Choice

On the current schedule I’d go with the NCTB Dade City race. The track has some awesome flow and is a blast to ride. Of all time, it has to be OSDR at Carlton Ranch in the early 2010s. That property had every type of terrain from slick black dirt to deep sugar sand.

CATCHING UP: TYDARIUS JONES Hey Tydarius, how has your season been so far? The season has been going great so far. The goal for this year is to stay consistent and so far we’re doing just that. You spent last year in A 200 and A 250, now you are in A Open on a 450. Why the change? My coach (Dustin Morgan) suggested that I’m at the age and speed where I should be on a bigger bike, something that I can’t blow up or wear down. You’ve definitely gotten faster this season. What have you been working on in the offseason to find some more speed? After last season Dustin put me on a Honda 450. It was something different from what I’m used to

power wise on a dirt bike. Off the bike he has me flip tires and do sprints up and down the road. It’s something we just started and I’m already feeling the results when I ride. You won your first A class race this year at Hog Waller, how did that feel? It felt really good, it’s something I’ve been pushing for ever since I started riding. I felt like I had a lot of eyes on me coming into the season with the new bike and team so I think the win shows what I’m capable of. How did you get hooked up with Dustin Morgan? I met him through his stepson Jayten. I have seen Dustin riding dirt bikes around the neighborhood before but I never actually knew who he was. He has taught me a lot.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

You recently graduated high school, what are you up to in that regard? You get a fancy job or something? Just riding, racing, training and working. No fancy job just working at Waste Pro. It was one of the only jobs that doesn’t work on the weekends so it allows me to go to the races. Who do you want to thank? I would like to thank Seminole Powersports, Williamson Custom Jewelry, Viral Brand Goggles, Ol’ Red, HBD Motografx, Randy Faul and Seat Concepts, Fly Racing, Motion Pro, Moto4Play, IMS Products, FMF, DT1 Filters, Mika Metals, Ashley Morgan, my family, and a huge thanks to Dustin Morgan for giving me the chance to start riding and racing.

RACING MY FIRST HARE SCRAMBLE

By Caleb Salazar

I first met Caleb at the Croom Motorcycle Area in October, the Ohio native had his Honda CRV loaded down with with his KTM 300 and he seemed like a pretty cool cat. After a short rip and conversation I convinced him to come try out his first race at the SADRA Headless Harescramble. Caleb went on to finish 10th out of 28 riders in C Open and was instantly hooked. I asked him to do a breif write up on his experience at his first FTR event. Hello everyone my name is Caleb Salazar I’m from Dayton, Ohio. I first started riding when I was 13-years-old. Inspired by Red Bull Romaniacs, live enduro races and Nitro Circus I began to build my enduro course in backyard and always dreamed of racing someday. As I focused on hockey and football throughout middle and high school, racing and riding were put on the back burner. Soon after the ball sports were over I began my time at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida to further my education and I started riding again at Croom Motorcycle Park. After three years of riding at Croom I met a guy named Kurt Lucas who invited me to come race the SADRA Hare Scramble in Bartow. Finally my

dream of racing was about to come true! Saturday rolled around and I could not contain my excitement. I had the opportunity to make some new friends while I was watching the race on Saturday and getting registered for the race on Sunday. I had no idea all the things that went into putting on a race. I am extremely thankful for FTR and how well they are organized. Race day rolled around and went through my first practice lap ever and I was ready for the start at 1pm. My start sucked. I later found out I started on the wrong row, but hey I was living my dream of racing. After the first lap I was missing the Ohio packed dirt but could not wait to get to the pits and go at it again. After the second lap I had no idea my bike weighed as much as it did. The third lap rolled around and I went over the bars once, dropped the bike three times and then finally saw the checkered flag. Overall I had a great experience, met great people and have been looking forward to every race since then. Thank you FTR for putting together great courses and for Kurt inviting me to live out my dream!
