ON THE COVER JessLynn Caban has been mixing it up with the boys in the Mini B class all season. I decided to catch up with the Lakeland native to learn more about how she got into riding and what her goals are for the year. Turn to page 24 to read more. Photo by Mariah Lacy
EDITOR’S NOTE Can you believe we are already halfway done with the season? I know I can’t. It has been an unreal season for FTR with historic numbers across the board I have seen a lot of new, and old, faces at the races and I hope we can keep this going throughout the season. One thing that I wanted to touch on is the clubs that make up FTR. With FTR numbers continuing to grow our clubs need to grow as well. None of this would be possible without the hardwork and dedication that each club, and its members, put into each event. Photo by Tyler Miller
Our wonderful Business FEBRUARY 2021
Manager, Darlene Riggs, has decided to create a segment in the magazine called “Club Corner” where she will highlight the individual clubs in FTR and give insight on what these clubs actually do, and how to join them. I am also working on an article that will go into detail on what goes into putting on a Hare Scramble event. You can expect to see that in the March issue. Thanks for reading! stellar events coming up with the “Southern Swing “ part of the series and then we head back up the state with some events that didn’t get to go last year.
Pulling a Tearoff As we move into the New Year with hopes of getting somewhat back to normal, we still are reminded that we have a ways to go. We are so very fortunate we are able to continue with our events with very little interruption that sometimes we start taking things for granted. As I write this, the reality hit as we had to postpone one of our oldest, if not the oldest running event in FTR history, the Richloam Enduro hosted by CFTR. As our hopes were high that the Forestry Department would issue a permit, they had different ideas and told us to come back later and re-apply. As we roll into the second half of our season, our fingers are crossed that we continue on schedule and are able to complete our series without any cancellations. We have some
Making all of this happen takes an unreal amount of time from our clubs and volunteers with weekends and months sacrificed to allow all of us to come enjoy our sport and hang out with our family. We have an excellent organization that is proud, consistent and dedicated to provide riding opportunities for everyone that from the littlest to the oldest that wants to experience the off-road world. Along with offering all of this, the opportunity for change and improvement can come from anyone. Moving forward with positive thinking with ideas to make our organization solid, strong and keep the vision of promoting our sport is just a few things that keep FTR one of the best role model organizations out there. Staying positive and looking to make changes for the betterment of the members and FTR is always front and center. We have members and officials coming up with ideas and proposals to make our weekends the best they can be and to improve the workings of both FTR and the clubs. We have a dedicated member that is giving up a tremendous amount of time coming up with ideas

and possibilities to improve our scheduling and efficiency by presenting them so the entire world can see. Whether you agree, disagree or you have ideas to add to his proposals, do so with respect and professionalism. We all have opinions on how we think something should be done, how you convey those opinions is what is important, especially on a social media outlet where everyone is an expert and the entire world forms an opinion on our organization. Keep it cool and keep it positive. I would like to thank all of those who put their name in the hat for an Area Director position, Kelsey for stepping up and handling the secretary position, and to Kyle for volunteering to come back on as a member of the EC. Also to the rest of the members of all the committees in FTR that devote their time and effort to make our organization the best in the nation. Thanks for listening, Randy Faul

COYOTE REVENGE RACE REVIEW There is no better way to start the new year than to head to Brooksville for the Coyote Revenge Hare Scramble. This event is always a favorite as the Mondon Hill property provides unique challenges. It is an old mining pit, so it features plenty of hills, hard ground and slippery soil.
some victims (see below), but for the most part it gave riders a chance to show off their skills and provided the spectators an excellent place to watch.
These factors, along with the cooler weather and holiday weekend, always draw a large amount of entries. In 2021 we saw 1,056 entries, which sets a record for this event.
After the motocross section riders made their way through a short woods section before heading out to the fields. The fields at Mondon Hill were tricky on Sunday. We saw some rain early Sunday morning which made the fields very slick. Throttle control was key in navigating through the fast sweepers.
The Suncoast Trail Blazers put together an awesome course. The start of the loop brought you straight into the motocross track, which featured a few small doubles, tapletops and the infamous step up. Unfortunately the step up claimed
Exiting the fields, riders made their way into some tight, technical hill sections before heading into a flowy section through a gulley. It is sections like these that make this event so great. After a few more technical sections riders entered a flowy

pine section and some fast switchbacks before taking the “Daytona 500” to the slag pile, where they would encounter some more technical hills before finishing the lap. The Peewee Course is also one of the more technical in the series. We saw Dustin Steffey grab another win as he continues his Peewee A domination. Cody DeKlyn took the win in Peewee B, Juan Quintero in Peewee C and Gentry McBride in Peewee Beginner. Two Brooksville natives would take the wins in the Quad Super Peewee classes, Avery Collins in A and Noah Slocum in B. Beau Collins, another Brooksville native, won Quad Peewee A and Jayce Hart took the win in Quad Peewee B.

We saw an excellent battle for the Mini A win between Logan Crawford and Jimmy Moore. The two swapped positions all race and in the end Crawford would beat Moore by just nine seconds. Tyler Lamb put in another impressive showing on his KTM 65, finishing first in 65A and 9th overall. The Saturday 2pm race had a couple of heavy hitters join in on the fun. Flat track racer Jesse Janisch took home the overall from the Sportsman 2 line,
ahead of Enrique Varela. Landon Lynn and Clay Lyons duked it out for the Pre-Modern A victory. Lynn would outdeal Lyons and take the win by just two seconds. The Quad race saw an influx of GNCC guys show up and try their hand at an FTR Hare Scramble. Hunter Hart would dominate the Quad AA class over Josh Merritt and Brandon Frazier. The battle for the overall of the

Sunday AM race was shaping up to be a good one with Shawn Clark and Clay Lyons going at it. Unfortunately for Shawn, and the spectators, his race would end early with a flat tire. Lyons would take the overall win over Barry McCarty and Jon McCabe. We capped off the weekend wiith a AA showdown between Jesse Ansley, Jack Chambers and Garrett Edmisten. Ansley would take the Sunday PM overall ahead of Chambers and Edmisten.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT 20/20 MX Goggles was founded in April of 2020 by current FTR member, Matt Karwat. Matt grew up racing motocross in Florida with aspirations to turn professional. Unfortunately, as many know, this sport is tough to make a living off of. So Matt decided to find a new way to have a career in the

GOGGLES
sport. That is when he came up with the idea of 20/20. After trial and error, Matt decided to go with the magnetic lens concept for his product. After 17 years of racing he knew all too well the hassle of changing out traditional “pop and lock” goggle lenses.
20/20 MX Goggles feature a magnetic lens that allows the user to switch out lenses in a matter of seconds. “I hated having to swap out lenses in traditonal goggles, it was the biggest pain and you end up smudging the new lense in the process,” says Matt “With the magnetic lense it makes the decision to go from tinted to clear, or vice versa, that much easier.” For 2021, 20/20 MX Goggles is adding five new styles as well as an updated frame. To find out more about 20/20 check out their website www.2020mxg.com and follow them on Instagram @2020mxgoggles The “Flamingo” is new for 2021

CLUB CORNER
The Florida Trail Riders schedule is made up of over 15 events put on by individual clubs who work tirelessly to prepare the race sites for our Hare Scramble and Enduro series. They work many days out in the woods before the event, during the event as course workers and after the event for property cleanup. All is not work, during the year clubs have monthly meetings, gatherings and club trips. As the membership of FTR continues to grow, our clubs need to grow as well. If you would like to join a club and be a part of making FTR events even more succesful, then look for a club in your area (next page), contact them with any questions you may have.

CATCHING UP: JESSLYNN CABAN JessLynn Caban arrived on the FTR scene in 2019 winning every race she entered in the 65 Girls class. After winning the 65 Girls Championship Jesslynn decided to move up to the Mini C class and race the boys. That lasted two races before getting promoted into Mini B, where she would finish second in her first race in that class. I decided to catch up with JessLynn to learn a little bit more about the rider from Lakeland. Hey JessLynn! How are you? How is your season going so far? Hello! It has been
going good! I am currently in Mini B having a good time mixing it up with the boys. When did you first start riding? I first started riding two years ago on Christmas. I got into riding through our friend Cody Neff. I was instantly hooked, I won my first race. What has been your favorite race so far? My favorite race is definitely Mondon Hill in Brooksville. I really like the motocross section with the jumps. FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS
What are your goals for the rest of the season? My main goal is to win a race in the B class. What is your favorite part of racing FTR? I really enjoy being able to hangout with my friends. I definitely missed them during the break. It was a bummer we had to end the season early. Who would you like to thank? My family, Stripped Down Motorsports and WMR.
QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD “Who is your pick to win the 2021 450 Supercross Title? Cody Wilson
“I have to go with Ken Roczen, he took the motocross season off last year to get his mind and body right. He looks more focused than ever before.”
Johnny Lawrence “Bam Bam (Barcia) all the way. New team, new people around and a new bike. All around a new and more mature rider which I believe will keep in the hunt. Plus he is from New York, like me.”
Cody Thomas “Ken Roczen, from what I’ve seen so far he’s the most consistent guy, with a lot to prove. He’s taken some time off the last few years but he hasn’t lost speed.”
