On Top of It

As I write this, you could kick the dirt and expect a dust bowl but that has finally ended with the rain we are receiving now. As everyone knows, the summer time blues are in full force but with this much needed rain there is hope of getting us to the start of the new season by allowing us to hit our favorite riding areas and not have to wear a dust mask. Crooms comes to mind which can take rain all the time and brings everyone out as

we have a few spotters that live just down the road that puts the word out. In the meantime, getting all the chores done early will open up more dirt scooter time down the road so check off those items off of that honey-do list and things will be good.

Speaking of checking off the list, those that have campers, fifth wheels and enclosed trailers now is the time to service those brakes, hub bearings and the suspension linkages/bushings. Our campers are

made for going from campground to campground on the paved highway, not down rough dirt roads, pastures or mud pits. Of course, like myself, most of us are over loaded and that adds most stress and wear on components, so proper maintenance is a must. Now that I got my list knocked out, I need to load up and get some seat time in. See you in the woods.

Thanks for listening, Randy

CHAPLAIN’s CORNER

Starting Line to Checkered Flag…

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

What an amazing way to close out the season!!!!!

God was moving with the riders, through the families and in our hearts.

In Ephesians 1:18, the apostle PauI stated, “ pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

Betty and I have been praying for all of you, not only during this season but since we began with FTR 14 years ago. We has seen the hope and thankfulness in the hearts of the riders when we hear “thanks for praying for us” or “thanks for praying over us before our race”. We continually lift all of you up for safety, protection and that you are alert to see His hand on you.

Saturday night was the greatest blessing Fuel Ministry, Betty and I have every experienced at a race. In the middle of a cow pasture, in the back of a pick-up truck, four of our riders told the world the change in their hearts because of Jesus. We baptized these four young men with 50-60 witnesses, all applauding and cheering!

In Romans 1:16, Paul wrote, “For I am not ashamed of this Good News (the Gospel) about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes”.

As you enjoy your summer break, please take the time to thank God for the protection supplied during the season. It is my prayer for all my FTR family that you find the peace that only a personal relationship with Jesus can provide.

Blessings on and off the road,

Jim and Betty Edleston

Desde la línea de salida a la bandera de cuadros... "He peleado la buena batalla, he terminado la carrera, he mantenido la fe". 2

Timoteo 4:7

Jim y Betty Edleston

MOTO PT IMPROVE YOUR MOVE

Call the POLICE: A Physical Therapist’s Guide to Acute Injuries

Hello FTR Family,

Often, during race weekends, I get asked the best way to manage an injury that has just occurred. You should always seek medical attention for serious injuries, but when the injury is less severe, you have probably heard of the PRICE acronym to help you manage your injuries. The PRICE acronym stands for Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. The PRICE guidance has been around for a long while and has recently been improved to the POLICE guidelines. Physical therapists often recommend the POLICE protocol, a comprehensive and modern approach: Protection, Optimal Loading, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. This method replaces the older RICE approach, providing a more dynamic and active recovery strategy.

Protection

The first step in managing an acute injury is to protect the injured area from further harm. This might involve using braces, splints, or other supportive devices to immobilize the affected part temporarily. The goal here is to prevent additional damage while still allowing some level of movement to avoid stiffness and promote healing.

Optimal Loading

Unlike the old "Rest" recommendation, "Optimal Loading" encourages controlled, gradual use of the injured area. This means engaging in activities that maintain movement and load within a pain-free range. Optimal loading helps in maintaining muscle strength, flexibility, and promotes the formation of strong, healthy tissue during the healing process. Your physical therapist will guide you on how much activity is appropriate and help you avoid overloading the injury.

Ice

Applying ice to the injured area helps reduce pain and swelling. Use an ice pack wrapped in a cloth and apply it for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours during the first 48 hours post-injury. This helps to numb the area, decrease

blood flow, and reduce inflammation. Always ensure that ice is not applied directly to the skin to prevent frostbite.

Compression

Compression is essential in managing swelling. Elastic bandages, compression wraps, or specialized garments can provide the necessary pressure to minimize fluid accumulation in the injured tissues. Proper application is key, as too tight wrapping can impair circulation, while too loose won't be effective. Your physical therapist can show you the correct technique to ensure optimal results.

Elevation

Elevating the injured body part above the level of your heart helps reduce swelling by encouraging fluid to drain away from the injury. This is especially important during the initial stages of the injury. For example, if you've injured your ankle, lying down with your leg propped up on pillows can significantly reduce swelling and pain.

The POLICE protocol is a balanced approach to acute injury management that emphasizes protection while maintaining mobility and function through optimal loading. Integrating ice, compression, and elevation effectively reduces pain and swelling, paving the way for a quicker and more efficient recovery. If you've sustained an acute injury, consult your physical therapist to tailor the POLICE method to your specific needs and to ensure a safe and effective healing process. If you have any questions or comments, please email me at contact@motopt.com, or call/text 904395-5379. Let's IMPROVE YOUR MOVE so you can ride pain-free with MotoPT. I will see you at the races!

A Thank You to Can-Am,

As we work our way through the 2023 – 2024 season, I want to take a minute and give a huge thanks to CanAm. For many of us racing/riding is not just a hobby, but it becomes a lifestyle. We pack our home on wheels, load our racing machines and make our way to a cow pasture to spend another weekend with our racing family. We all know that this sport can be dangerous but that never stops us. Unfortunately, we do have racers and even some spectators that get injured or ill during the race weekend. Central Florida Powersports – Jason Ennis reached out to me before the season started to let me know that Can-Am was interested in providing the safety team with a side by side. From the start, the dedication to improve racer/spectator safety from Can-Am was evident. We received a 2023 Can-Am Defender XT HD9 to add to the safety team’s arsenal of tools to provide care to Florida Trail Riders members. This unit comes to FTR at no cost to the organization which is a huge benefit, and it was delivered to the team at the first race of the season. So why is this a big deal? The addition of this side by side provides another means in the ability to provide rapid response of medical crew and equipment to an emergency. It furthermore provides a secondary means of transporting the injured/ill racer/spectator back to camp. As we all know when an injury or illness happens, seconds count. Being able to emergently get to that person can be the difference between bad and really bad. Our hope is that you never need to ride on it but know that we have you covered should you need it.

So again, a huge thank you to Can-Am for their dedication to membership safety. Also thank you to Jason for his work with this endeavor. Would also like to give a shout out to HBD Motografx – Ronnie for the EMS wrap.

See you all at the track. Braaap!!
