EDITOR’S NOTE
First off just want to say we are thinking about those members whose lives were im pacted by Hurricane Ian. What a nasty storm that wreaked havoc on Southwest Florida. The damage caused by the storm throughout the state has left us in a bit of uncertainty as far as our race schedule goes.
Luckily Hog Waller will go off as planned, as well as the Gobbler Getter Enduro the first weekend in November. After that it we are really up in the air. It is looking like CFTR will take
over another clubs date and we may have more switching as the series goes on. This years schedule will be like no other.
Luckily FTR and the clubs have great people involved and will work their hardest to ensure we get a full schedule this year!
Can’t wait to see every one at the races!

Load the Tear Offs
As I start this article before the Croom Enduro and the Peace River Hare Scramble, I hope that all went well with our sec ond Enduro and our first Hare Scramble. With the weather and the constant afternoon showers I’m sure the Croom Enduro had pristine conditions and can take just about any amount of rain, but the rest of us might be a little concerned as hurricane season is still in effect. I know everyone is ready to throw some dirt and the excitement is off the chart, but remember the famous words from the one and only Clint East wood, “A Man has to Know His Limitations”.

Riding within your ability will sure make the season an enjoyable one and one you can reflect back on in a positive way. I get it, everyone’s excited, pumped up and ready to see how all that practice during the summer will pay off, or lack of practice.
I had the chance to participate in the WMR Ride Day down at the Snake River property last month and it was a great event with epic trails and witnessed some not so epic riding skills. The majority of the riders were FTR members with a few MX guys and a few non racers hitting the course. Seemed like everybody was fast at the beginning but as the sand
and dirt started to dry up and whoop out, things really started happening. No names or numbers will be mentioned but there were a lot of riders struggling. Hopefully you guys have worked through the issues, got your bike sorted out and are ready for the new season.
Lots of good times ahead with our family and friends as we pull into the cow pastures, just remember it’s all about making memories, being with your fam ily and getting to ride our dirt scooters. Everyone have a safe, fun season as we get this circus started.

A message from Florida Trail Riders
President Randy Faul:
I want to personally thank everyone that reached out to fellow FTR members that were affected by Hurricane Ian. Many of us were in the path of the storm and took a big hit during the 120+ mph winds that lasted up to eight hours as Ian slowly crawled across the state. Once com munication started to open back up after days with no service many members called to check in and offer their assistance. As I write this on October 4th I, like many others, are still running on generator power. Living in the country, with no neighbors and cows and orange groves for miles, has its benefits but also its downfalls. As we go head down the road to normalcy, it is a light at the end of the tunnel that everything will get better and the roads will start to open back up.
On the FTR side of the things we are working on a revised schedule that will help us continue on our series uninterrupted. There are multiple clubs working together to switch their dates in order to have the same schedule, just at dif ferent locations, on the previously scheduled dates. We know many of you have taken the time off work, made plans and are itching to get back on a dirt scooter, myself included. With the next few events coming at a time of uncertainty in many members personal lives I can’t stress enough the importance of having patience, respect and appreciation for the effort put forth from our fellow members just so we can race and have fun. With the possibility of being un derstaffed please have your paperwork ready, membership up to date, minor release cards in hand and consider pre-entering.
This was a humbling experience that could have taken a lot more than just electric, shingles, trees, roads and disruption of our lives. To all my fellow members who are out there helping in any capacity, thank you!

Starting Line to Checkered Flag…

Betty and I have been praying for our FTR family continuously through this heartbreaking challenge of Hurricane Ian!
All of us are trying to wrap our minds and hearts around the devastation we see on the television (if we have power)… and out are front doors. Some of us no longer have front doors or homes.
With all this around us, it can be very easy to lose sight of who is watching over us and is still in full control. Deuteronomy 31:6 states, “Be strong and coura geous. Do not be afraid or terri fied…for the Lord your God goes
with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.”. He has promised, no matter the situation, He will never leave us. No matter our fear, He is with us.
Matthew 5:4 puts it this way, “ “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
There is comfort in the Lord for those who are mourning this tragedy. Calling upon Him in our times of need is not acting on weakness, it is showing that our trust has been put within Him and that He is who we seek out in our times of grief.
For many of us right now, hope is some distant feeling long lost by what we see. “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him.’” Lamentations 3:21-24.
God knows us and the pain we are feeling right now. We just need to turn to Him. Psalm 40:1-3, “I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to
stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in Him.” Placing your trust in God through His Son Jesus will bring that peace, comfort and an everlasting HOPE. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.” .1 Peter 1:3
Just as Ian moved over Florida and out to sea, the tragedy left behind will heal. It will take time, love, patience and prayer. Jesus is right there with you and He won’t leave you ever! Just trust Him.

DATE AND LOCATION CHANGES
Due to Hurricane Ian the following dates and loca tions have been changed:
CFTR: Originally supposed to be the first Hare Scramble on the schedule, CFTR will now take over DDR’s date of November 12th and 13th and will be held in Bartow.
SADRA: SADRA was originally supposed to be held on October 29th and 30th but after a property assesment and with a majority of club members residing in storm affected areas they have decided to reschedule their event for later in the season.
DDR: Due to extensive storm damage on their race prp[erty DDR has decided to surrender their date in November, with CFTR taking over. DDR plans to reschedule their event later in the season.

Dead Lifts-The Perfect Lift for FTR?
The deadlift exercise, and mod ified versions of it, might be the perfect exercise for FTR racers. The deadlift position overlaps with a correct upright riding po sition while standing and works many of the same muscles. If done correctly will strengthen your back and core and im prove your standing tolerance on and off your bike or ATV. In fact, some researchers have proven the benefits of deadlifts for low back pain. Aasa et al. (2015) completed a random ized control trial where the experimental group received the deadlift exercise because it activates the stabilizing muscles of the spine and focuses on optimal spinal alignment throughout the motion. They found that patients with low back pain that were put through a graded deadlift program had similar improvement in their low back pain measures as patients put through a traditional spinal motor training program (Aasa et al., 2015).
A set of researchers combed the literature last year and found three ad
ditional studies that supported using an exercise program that includes deadlifts for low back pain (Fischer et al., 2021). This doesn’t mean that everyone with low back pain should be performing deadlifts, but it appears to be more helpful if you are already functioning at a high level. Either way, we can con clude that it might be a good exercise when incorporated in the management of low back pain and is comparable to other modes of physical therapist management of this condition.
Don’t get too excited just yet. Deadlifts are complicated multijoint movements that require coordination, flexibility, and mo bility. So, before you go load ing that Olympic barbell, lets start with some simple checks. 1. Can you bend forward and touch your toes with your knees straight? 2. Can you touch the ground if you bend your knees but keep your back straight? 3. Hold a broomstick or golf club vertically against your back and keep your back straight. Do you feel how your back contacts the stick at multiple points? Keep the stick in place, bend forward and see how close to parallel you can get your back to the
ground without losing contact with the stick to ensure spinal alignment. You can bend your knees and your hips, but not past your normal standing rid ing position. Don’t worry if you failed any quick mobility checks above. The mobility check becomes your new warm-up exercise to restore the motion needed to deadlift form and improve your standing riding position. A good start is 5-10 seconds of movement through each position for 10 repetitions to loosen up.
Don’t want to wait for good form to add deadlifts to your routine? Are you the type who can’t wait to start a new ex ercise? You can start now but you will need to modify. Mean ing whichever position you can correctly lower yourself down to in the number 3 mobility check above, that is the posi tion you should stop lowering the weights before returning to an upright position. The best way to accomplish a modified deadlift safely is to use dumb bells instead of the barbell and not set the weight down on the ground until you are done with a set. Go light and work on endurance of these exercises.
Forget counting reps and in stead set a timer. Can you do 1 minute of continuous controlled and steady deadlift motion with a light dumbbell? What about 3 minutes? 10 minutes? It might seem like a lot, but our sport is one of significant muscle endurance, watch the GNCC XC1 or our AA riders during a race... they stand more than half of the time.
Another good alternative exercise is the bent-over dumbbell or barbell row. Assume the same end range position the start of your deadlift or modified deadlift. While you are in this starting position engage your core by drawing your naval in toward your spine and hold this contraction the duration of the set. Now instead of standing up with the weight, use even less weight or resistance and row the weight up to your chest. Do this with your arms in mul tiple positions: shoulders at 90 degrees of elevation as in full attack position, shoulders at 45 degrees of elevation such as at corner exit, arms against your body as if doing a low row. The entire time you are bent at the hips, waist, and knees, as you do in your standing riding po sition. If you need a break, try, and take a short break between each set. Shorten the rest break over time to build endurance. Need some motivation? Think of all those sand whoops that are way easier to ride when you are standing and powering through them rather than sitting down
and letting the bike bounce around. Build that endurance for those sand whoops. Go to your handlebars and measure the distance between your grips. Set your hands at this distance when you are perform ing your bent-over rows until this position becomes second nature. This will help you build endurance in your natural riding position.
Whether you decide to add in endurance training with dead lifts or bent-over rows, I be lieve you will see an immediate improvement in your standing tolerance when riding. Some things to think about while performing these exercises. What area of your body did you feel the most strain and lactic acid build-up? Where did you feel like you were working the hardest? These can be great hints at underlying impairments that, if treated and unlocked, can significantly improve your riding efficiency. And of course, if any of this hurts, either during the mobility checks, during, or after the exercise, please stop. It is important you don’t push through pain and maintain spi nal alignment and engagement throughout the duration of these exercises.
Before you start any new exer cise program, I highly recommend you consult a physical therapist or physician for a gen eral health and physical activity readiness screening. If you are experiencing LBP, it is always
