Before we get started here, I would like to take a few minutes to touch on our biggest event of the year, our annual banquet. Preparations, planning and putting those plans into action takes on a huge undertaking as each season there is a time frame that has to be met with no exceptions. This year was no exception but thankfully FTR had our one and only Darlene Riggs at the helm and with her group of ladies behind the scene, it was another stellar event. So, a Big Thank You to all of you that volunteered and helped with all that goes on before, during
and after the banquet, FTR is blessed to have all of you and we can’t thank you enough. Also, a big Thank You to Moose Racing, FMF, Engine Ice, Seat Concepts and HBD Graphics for your continued support. Scott Dawson and crew at Eastcoast Screenprinting knocked it out of the park once again with the awesome awards , along with Central Florida Powersports, TFracing and the Batchie family for adding to the special night for our members. Special Thanks to Randy Hawkins and Zach Osborne for helping out with the awards presentation along with some of our own members gracing the stage while
acknowledging our winners with some awesome interviews, Thanks guys.
As the start of the season is just weeks away with two enduros coming up pretty fast, we also might see a few more additions to our schedule as a couple clubs have made some inquiries with new properties. Stay tuned and watch the schedule as they get the go ahead, we will add those additional events as they are confirmed.
Thanks for listening
Words: Jim Edleston
To do that, you need a Plan. Practice, exercise, mental focus are all required to help you complete your purpose.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
2 Timothy 4:7
The 2023-2024 season is underway!!! Over the summer, many you (I hope) started preparing, physically, mentally and mechanically.
First, you identify your Purpose. Your goal is to be the best you can be and, with that, win races!
Finally, you need a Program. An organized schedule, blocking off a daily/weekly timeframe for riding. Daily exercise to include running (to build stamina), weightlifting (to build strength) and meditation (visualizing the victory) are all necessary to succeed.
Jesus also followed this pattern. He has Purpose. In Luke 19:10, Jesus said of Himself, “For the Son of man came to seek and to save that which was lost”. As the Son of God, He knew His purpose from the beginning.
Jesus also has a Plan. Matthew 17:23, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill
him, and he will be raised on the third day.” Jesus predicted and announced His plan and followed it. By believing in Him, He will “save that which is lost”… That means you and me.
Finally, Jesus has a program. The most famous of all verses in the Bible shows it clearly. John 3:16; “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and everlasting life.”
Jesus loves you so much and He is waiting to show you that love. Just call His Name and He will be there!!!!
Blessings on and off the road, Jim and Betty Edleston CMA
Some good news coming from the Big Scrub Trail Riders club as they have found some land to hold an enduro on this year. The event will take place on December 3rd in Lake Butler, Florida. This will bring the enduro series to eight races total. Rumor has it this could be a potential Hare Scramble property in the future, but for this year it will be enduro only. This is great news as new property is getting very hard to find.
The Hare Scramble Committee is accepting nominations for all positions.
Nominations and appointments/voting will be at the first HS committee meeting at HS#1, CFTR, in Bartow. The positions up for nomination and their current holders are as follows.
Chairman-Randy Rash
AA/A displacement classes-Ryan McCarthy
B/C displacement classes-Roy Culbertson
Specialty A and B classes-Paul Lucas
Specialty C classes and Women’s classes-Holly Langford
Saturday classes-Kurt Lucas

Hello FTR Family,
We are quickly approaching our first FTR Hare scramble hosted by CFTR! I am excited to see you all there. This month I wanted to carry the shoulder theme a little further by covering another commonly overlooked source of pain and or riding impairment at the posterior back and shoulder. This month we are going to discuss the latissimus dorsi (lats) and how it may affect your riding.
The lats are large fan shaped muscles that originate on your spine, ribs, and thoracolumbar fascia and attach all the way up to the base of your humerus (upper arm bone) in the front of your shoulder.1 This muscle is sometimes called the swimmers muscle and has been studied for its impact on the kinematics of high level overhead athletes such as baseball players, swimmers, and rowers.2–4 The action of this muscle is to extend your shoulder joint and rotate your arm internally and also return your arm to your body (adduction). The lats are one of the main muscles that help you hold on to the handlebars and keep your body in place while you are attacking rough terrain in
the correct standing position. Additionally, your lats are an extremely important accessory muscle for respiration.
If the lats are tight it limits shoulder elevation, which you need while you are in standing attack position rowing the handlebars.3 Tight lats can also cause your shoulder blades to move abnormally which will change the load to other weaker muscles around your shoulder blade. If you ride and after a long section of sand whoops or towards the end of the race you start to feel tired or cramping just behind your arm pit or across the back and side of your ribs it could be your lats causing these symptoms. Here is the test to see if your lats are tight. Lye on the floor flat on your back with your legs straight. Next, keep your elbows straight and raise your arms all the way up and over your head and see if your elbows can touch the floor (see photo 1).
Photo 1 Reference: https://sport. onehowto.com/article/how-tostretch-your-abs-after-a-workout-12083.html
Hopefully those arms are lying on
the floor, but your elbows are still straight. Next, flex your hips and knees to slide the soles of your feet up until they are close to your glutes (see photo 2). Make sure your back is flat on the floor and you are not arching like the guy in photo 2.
Photo 2 Reference: https://flabfix.com/ how-to-do-lying-overhead-reach-exercise-properly/
If your arms never touched the floor or only touch the floor when your legs are straight you have tight lats. Here are some suggestions on how to stretch your lats. If you are familiar with yoga, a child’s pose with your arms stretched out in front of you is a great lat stretch, especially if you externally rotate your arms so your palms are facing the ceiling sit your hips away from your arm. A more aggressive stretch is hanging from a pullup bar. Somewhere in the middle is a standing lats stretch where you grab the doorway with one arm, thumbs up. Then you sit back and pull your hips away and to the opposite side while rounding your back.
Why is all this so important? Because if you have tight lats it can
make it difficult to breathe, especially when you are in the correct standing riding position on rough terrain. Imagine what it would feel like to be in the attack standing position, railing a set of whoops, your lats are fully engaged to help you row the handlebars, but you can still take a full breath as necessary. It can be a gamechanger for some riders. Before acting on any information in this article, I highly recommend you consult a physical therapist or physician for a general health and physical activity readiness screening. If you are experiencing pain while riding, it is always beneficial to have a complete evaluation by a physical therapist or physician. If you have any questions or comments, please email me at contact@motopt.com, or call 904-395-5379. Let's IMPROVE YOUR MOVE so you can ride pain-free with MotoPT.

THANK YOU ROCKY MOUNTAIN ATV M/C FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT OF FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS
OVER $150,000 IN RACE GAS GIFT CARDS EACH YEAR!
To me there is no better way to kick off the FTR race season than the Little Brown Jug Enduro. Located in Union, South Carolina (about an hour south of Greenville) this event provides a nice change of scenery for us Floridians. The ground is hard, the dirt is slick and well for this year the weather was cooler. I will say it is always tough at the beginning of the race with the terrain being very different than the typical Florida sand. By the end of the race, you get used to the orange clay and really start to enjoy the trail.
Test 1: Test 1 was a nice short 5.5 miles long. Which was enough time for the dreaded arm pump to settle in. I really enjoyed Test 1; it was smooth with nothing too tight. In my opinion it was the best possible test to start a long enduro with. After the test the transfer took you on what felt like a 5-mile ride through the back county roads this part of the country had to offer. I would be lying if I said I never thought I was lost and missed some arrows though.
Test 2: Test 2 was the longest test of the day, being just over 13 miles. Quite a change from the previous
test. Test 2 had a little bit of everything from tight switchbacks, jeep roads, technical hills and fast and flowing trails. I struggled a lot in Test 2 mainly from a vision standpoint. There was some dust that lingered, combined with the sunlight popping through the trees and I had a hard time seeing the trail. Luckily as the sun continued to rise the vision issues went away.
After Test 2 the riders headed back to the parking area for a “lunch break”. It is always hard for me to eat at this point as the adrenaline is flowing and I know if I eat too much, I will be very sluggish for the last few tests. So, I tried to eat what I could, chugged some pickle juice and drank water before heading back out for Test 3.
Test 3: Test 3 was another long one just short of 12 miles. This test was probably my favorite, it started off right in the parking area and took you through a motocross section with some jumps and fun corners. After that you ripped through some fields and then into some of the most flowy wood sections on the property. I felt good through here and was catching riders I hadn’t seen in the
previous tests, which is always a good feeling.
Test 4: Test 4 was the shortest test of the day at 5.1 miles long, it was also the fastest test. It was over so quickly I couldn’t believe it, I thought for sure it was a mistake. I hadn’t realized it at the time, but they were just sparing us for what was to come in Test 5.
Test 5: 12 miles of hell. That is what I would rename Test 5. I’ve done this event 3 times now and every year I dread this test. First off, it is the last test of the day, so everyone is beat. If that isn’t bad enough it is so tight you must slow to almost a stop and put one side of the handlebars through the trees, then the other. It feels never ending, as the test nears the end, they run you next to a road which is the biggest tease in the world! I will say there is no better feeling than seeing the checkered flag after this one.
Huge thanks to the Greenville Enduro Riders Association for putting on a fantastic event! If you have never done the Little Brown Jug Enduro I highly recommend this event!
