Grammy nominated children’s singer and songwriter Red Grammar joins the stage and performs a wonderful show for children and parents alike! White Mountains Snowmachine

4/6, 0800 Cost: $75 per driver (must be 18+), $10 passenger Take a snowmachine run with the Outdoor Recreation Team to the vast and beautiful White Mountains National Recreation Area. Women in the Wilderness XC SKI

4/6, 1000-1500 Cost: $5/person Ladies, here is your chance to hit the trails and enjoy the last bit of Alaskan winter before the snow melts. No previous experience necessary. We will provide the equipment and transportation. Make sure you bring warm clothes, water and a snack.

Geocaching 101 4/13, 1300 No cost. An introduction to a growing leisure activity around the world. Geocaching 101 will teach you the basics on how to use a GPS, from setting up way points to navigating your way to find the hidden treasure. You can use your own GPS or Outdoor Recreation can provide one for you.

Family Snowshoe/ Game Day

4/13, 1100-1400 Cost: $5/person Join us as we strap on our snowshoes and head outside for an afternoon of hiking and playing games with Family and friends in Glass Park. We provide the snowshoes; all you need to bring is warm clothes, a snack and water.

Family Archery

4/19, 1300-1500 Cost: $3/person Learn the basics of archery and shoot with the Family. No experience needed. We provide all necessary equipment for this fun afternoon.

Family Hike and Soak at Chena Hot Springs

4/20, 0900-1700 Cost: $20/person Enjoy a fun day away from town at the beautiful Chena Hot Springs Resort. We will start the day with a leisurely hike on one of the trails and then spend the rest of our time relaxing and soaking in the hot

spring. We provide the transportation; just don’t forget to bring a lunch, swim wear and a towel. Kids under 18 are not allowed in the outdoor hot springs rock lake.

Bear Safety Clinic

4/20, 1100 Summer time in Alaska means endless daylight, warmer weather, and bears. Don’t let the bears stop you from enjoying all that Alaska has to offer. Our Bear safety clinic will teach you the skills you need to be safer in bear country.

Summer Activity Clinic

4/20, 1300 Summertime in Alaska is what makes the winter bearable. With millions of acres of land and miles upon miles of rivers, there is no end to the amount of awesome activities you can do! Stop by building 4050 and Outdoor Recreation can help you plan your own adventures.

ATV Safety Course

4/27, 1300 This course is required for any of the ATV programs we will be running this summer. This ATV Safety Institute course is provided to promote safe and responsible use of ATV’s, thereby reducing accidents and injuries that may result from improper operation. Be sure to bring gloves and a good pair of over the ankle boots. Tennis shoes are not allowed!

Rock Climbing

4/27, 0900 Cost: $10/person Come on a day trip to one of the nearby climbing sites to try your hand on some real rock! Outdoor Recreation provides all climbing equipment including helmets, harnesses, shoes, ropes, belay devices, and carabineers. Be sure to pack your own lunch, snacks, and drinks and be prepared for a fun day on the rocks!

Family Indoor Rock Climbing

Sundays, 1200-1500 Cost: $5/person Enjoy a fun and unique Sunday afternoon climbing at an indoor rock wall. No previous experience needed, we provide all the necessary equipment and the know how to get you up and climbing. This is a Family friendly event and welcome kids of all ages. All you need to bring is a snack and water.

Women in the Wilderness Wickersham Dome Hike

5/4, 0900-1600 Cost: $10/person Ladies, the days are getting warmer and the snow is mostly gone. It’s time to spend a beautiful Saturday hiking Wickersham Dome. All you need to bring is a lunch, snack, and something to drink. Participants will meet at the Outdoor Recreation Center.


Quartz Lake Spring Fishing 5/4, 0800 Cost: $45/person Dust off the old fishing pole and relax at the lake for a day of spring fishing. As the ice recedes from the shore of the lakes, the fish come alive for the catching. Quartz Lake is known for Rainbow Trout, Landlocked Silver Salmon or Arctic Char. So break out your own rod or we can provide one for you. An Alaska State Fishing License is required!

5/5 and 5/12 1200-1500 Cost: $5/person Enjoy a nice Sunday afternoon climbing at an indoor rock wall. No previous experience needed, we provide all the necessary equipment and the know how to get you up and climbing. This is a Family friendly event and kids of all ages are welcome to participate. Geocaching in the Fairbanks Region (Moose Creek) 5/11, 1300 1300 No cost.

Now take the knowledge you learned from the 101 class to the local community

and go out and search for some of the hidden caches. This is a great way to see how geocaching really works and learn about different areas in your community. Makes for a fun filled Family day activity.

Boater Safety Course

5/18, 0900-1200 and 1300-1600 No cost. This class can be done by taking the online Boater Safety Course at www. boatus.org/onlinecourse. default.asp. Print your certificate and bring to the ORC for your Boater Safety Card to rent non-motorized boats. For motorized boats bring your certificate and attend one of our Boater Safety Clinics to get the river portion of the class. This course is conducted rain or shine so be sure to bring a raincoat. A Boater Safety Card is issued at the completion of the course and is valid for four years. Everyone renting a watercraft from the Outdoor Recreation Center is required to have a Boater Safety Card issued from the ORC on Ft. Wainwright. There are no exceptions!

ATV Safety Course

5/19, 1300 No cost. Outdoor Recreation will be conducting an ATV Safety Course. This course is required for any of the ATV programs we will be running this summer. This ATV Safety Institute course is provided to promote safe and responsible

Mt. Healy Hike

5/19, 0800 Cost: $10/person Hiking up the slopes of Mt. Healy with us, just north of Denali National Park. Wildlife and amazing views are sure to greet us as we venture up the mountain. Be sure to bring water, lunch and snacks. This trail is steep, but well worth the effort!

Harding Lake Early Summer Fishing

5/24, 25, 26; 0900 Cost: $75/adult; $50/youth (15 and under) Prior to the salmon runs and the halibut moving closer to shore, the lakes are coming alive with fish-a fisherman’s primer for what lies ahead. Although the Northern Pike fishery is closed year round there are still Arctic Char (Dolly Varden), Burbot and Lake Trout for the catching. An Alaska State Fishing License is required!

Alaska Range Mountain Hike

5/25, 0700 Cost: $10/person This day hike will take us into the high country in the mountains where we will see glaciers, soaring mountains and amazing vistas. Nordale Float

5/26, 0900 Cost: $10/person Join us for a relaxing day on the river as we float the Chena River from Nordale Road back to Glass Park. We’ll enjoy lunch along the way as we look for wildlife and enjoy the natural beauty of the interior. It’s your choice if you canoe or kayak so sign up today to come have fun with us.

Apprenticeship Program provides 15-18 year-old youth with meaningful, professionally managed career-exploration opportunities in Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) operations. Romp and Stomp Playgroup

This Month’s Focus: Recycling Mondays and Thursdays, 0930–1130 LFCAC, Bldg. 1044. This activity is a partnership between CYSS and ACS. For more information, call 353-7372.

NEW! Baby Signs: Sign, Sing, and Play Classes

Thursdays, 0900-0930 at LFCAC Hands on Parent and Child classes that are designed to improve communication with young children. Families will learn signs through song and play–keeping it fun for everyone! This basic signing series of six classes will be offered on a rotating basis and is appropriate for families with children 9 months to 5 years of age. No cost to attend. Parent kits available for purchase.

Emotion Coaching

4/4, 4/11; 1130-1230 LFCAC, Bldg. 1044 This workshop assists parents and caregivers in helping children understand and deal with their emotions in healthy ways.

Parent’s Night Out

Homemade Baby Food

4/10, 1830-2030 CDC I, Bldg. 4024 This two hour, hands on workshop will teach you the tips, tricks and guidelines of introducing solid foods to your infant. Participants will receive a food mill and a collection of baby food recipes.

Cuddle Cure Class

4/20, 1000-1200 CDC I, Bldg. 4024 Learn to soothe your fussy baby in 5 minutes or less. Topics covered are: joys and challenges of being new parents, what to expect, and the five steps to calm your baby and extend their sleep cycles.

Raising a Healthy Eater 4/8, 22: 1600-1730, Southern Lights Chapel, 8th and Neely. Take the stress and power struggles out of meal-time! Recognize children’s cues for hunger and fullness, and learn healthy feeding habits for your Family. Educational courses are based on Ellyn Satter’s “Feeding with Love and Good Sense.” Each class focuses on a different age group (infants through adolescence). Army Emergency Relief The Army Emergency Relief Campaign starts March 1st and runs through May 15, 2013. This is an opportunity for Soldiers to help Soldiers by donating to the AER Fund by contacting the AER Campaign Coordinator at 353-4311.
