Hired! Apprenticeship Program

Positions with ACS, SKIES, and CYSS now available! The HIRED! Apprenticeship Program provides 15-18 year-old youth with meaningful, professionally managed career-exploration opportunities in Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) operations. The program is open to dependents of active duty, DoD civilian, and retired military personnel. • Candidates must be 15–18 years of age • Must be registered with Child, Youth & School Services (CYS Services) • Must have and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or better • Chosen participants are required to work 15 hours/week for 12 weeks • Additional options and requirements may be offered during the Summer Term • Apprentices may complete up to 2 terms/year for 3 consecutive years For more information, call the MWR Partnership Specialist at 361-9897.

PRESCHOOL CHILD FIND DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENINGS For children ages 3-5

August 7, 8, 9 Preschool Child Find is a FREE program offered by the FNSB school district. An evaluator will work with your child ages 3-5 to identify their individual needs prior to entering school. A comprehensive developmental screening will be conducted to determine what resources are needed and available for your child to have a fun and successful school experience. Dall River Pike Hunt

8/2-8/4, 0800 Fee: $200 An Alaska State Fishing License is required! Bring breakfast, fishing rod and reel, tackle, small cooler, bug dope, rain gear, sleeping bag and pad. We provide transportation, tents, coolers with ice, lunch and evening meals.

Overnight Float Trip

8/3-8/4, 0800-1700 Fee: $90 Venture out onto one of Alaska’s countless rivers for a weekend of relaxing and floating fun. All you need is good clothing (NO COTTON!) and a desire for adventure. No previous paddling skill is required!

Gulkana Glacier Hike

8/3, 0700-1900 Fee: $15 Head to the Alaska Range and hike to the fantastic Gulkana Glacier. Bring a lunch, snacks, and something to drink.

Alaska Range Hike

8/4 & 8/30, 0700-1800 Fee: $15 This day hike will take us into the high country in the mountains where we will see glaciers, soaring mountains and amazing vistas. Pack water, snacks, lunch and an extra pair of shoes (old sneakers are great!) to cross the river in.

Family Archery

8/9, 1700-1900 Fee: $3 Learn the basics of archery and shoot with the family. No experience needed. We provide all necessary equipment for this fun afternoon outside.

Women in the Wilderness Glacier Hike 8/10, 0700-1700 Fee: $15 A women only installment of our amazing Alaska Range Hike! Bring lunch, snacks and water, we’ll provide the adventure!

Beginner Rockclimbing

8/10 & 8/24, 0900-1700 Fee: $15 All climbing equipment including helmets, harnesses, shoes, ropes, belay devices, and carabiners is provided. Be sure to pack your own lunch, snacks, and drinks and be prepared for a fun day on the rocks! No previous experience necessary.

Quartz Creek ATV Run

8/10, 0800 Fee: $75 We will depart the ORC at 8:30 a.m. Outdoor Recreation will provide the ATV’s, helmets, goggles and transportation. You bring a lunch, gloves, over the ankle boots, drink and snacks for the trail, daypack with bungee cord to strap to the ATV. An ATV Safety Course is required prior to the departure date.

8/11, 0900-1700 Fee: $10 Come along as we head into the hills to collect berries and enjoy the outdoors before winter comes.

Boater Safety Course

8/11, 0900-1200; 1300-1600 This class can be done by taking the online Boater Safety Course at www.boatus.org/onlinecourse. default.asp. Print your certificate and bring to the ORC for your Boater Safety Card to rent nonmotorized boats. For motorized boats bring your certificate and attend one of our Boater Safety Clinics to get the river portion of the class. This course is conducted rain or shine so be sure to bring a raincoat.

Family Day Hike

8/17, 0900 Fee: $15 This will be an easy trail that both kids and parents can enjoy. Bring a lunch, water, and a sense of adventure.

Pinnell Mt. Trail Overnight

8/16-8/18, 0700 Fee: $90 Spend three days and two nights traversing a series of alpine ridge tops entirely above timberline. ODR will provide the transportation, food, and equipment needed for this trip. All you need is good clothing (NO COTTON!) and a desire for adventure.

Valdez Silver Salmon

8/23-8/25, 0800 Fee: $225 An Alaska State Fishing License is required! These salmon are not only fun to catch but also make for some tasty eating. We provide transportation there and back, campground and Charter. You will need to bring camping gear, food, refreshments and fishing license. Reservations must be made by August 8.

Wickersham Dome Hike

8/25, 0900-1700 Fee: $15 Don’t miss your chance to get one last hike in before the snow arrives! We provide the transportation so all you need to worry about is packing a lunch, snacks, and something to drink.

Family River Kayak

8/31, 1100-1400 Fee: $10 No previous experience necessary. We provide the equipment and the know how to get you paddling in no time. Don’t forget to bring a snack and something to drink.

Fishing in Seward, Alaska 8/4-7; 8/11-14; 8/18-21; 8/25-28

This is great chance for all those with a love for fishing! All soldiers who attend will be required to have a fishing license, and pay for their own meals. Family members are welcome to join but at their own cost. Open to all soldiers on post. For information, call 353-7648.

Home Alone

8/13, 1600-1800 Youth Center, Bldg. 4109 Parent portion: covers the installation home alone policy, how to determine if your child is ready to be alone, how to ensure the safest home alone experience for children, and what the children are covering in their classroom. Student portion: covers safety, family expectations and house rules, the policy on the installation, and some basic snack ideas.

Romp and Stomp Playgroup

Baby Signs: Sign, Sing, and Play Classes

Mondays, 0900-0930 at LFCAC Hands on Parent and Child classes that are designed to improve communication with young children. Families will learn signs through song and play–keeping it fun for everyone! This basic signing series of six classes will be offered on a rotating basis and is appropriate for families with children 9 months to 5 years of age. No cost to attend. Parent kits available for purchase.

Strong Beginninngs

8/28, 1130-1300 & 1700-1800 CDC I, Bldg 4024. Parents of children who will be entering into our kindergarten readiness program come learn what the strong beginnings program entails. Also a great time to meet all the teachers.

Child, Youth & School Services provides limited child care for FAME programs. Child care is provided on site at Melaven Gym. When: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Cost: $28 per child per month Sign up for September sessions begins August 20. Please note that sessions in September will be held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 09001030 or 1030-1200. Cost will resume at $35. Children must be pre-registered at Parent Central Services, Bldg. 1049, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. August registration opens July 20.
