Women in the Wilderness WICKERSHAM DOME HIKE

5/4, 0900-1600 Fee: $10/person Ladies, the days are getting warmer and the snow is mostly gone. It’s time to spend a beautiful Saturday hiking Wickersham Dome. All you need to bring is a lunch, snack, and something to drink. Participants will meet at the Outdoor Recreation Center.

QUARTZ LAKE SPRING FISHING

5/4, 0800 Fee: $45/person Dust off the old fishing pole and relax at the lake for a day of spring fishing. As the ice recedes from the shore of the lakes, the fish come alive for the catching. Quartz Lake is known for Rainbow Trout, Landlocked Silver Salmon or Arctic Char. So break out your own rod or we can provide one for you. An Alaska State Fishing License is required!

FAMILY INDOOR ROCK CLIMBING

5/5 and 5/12 1200-1500 Fee: $5/person Enjoy a nice Sunday afternoon climbing at an indoor rock wall. No previous experience needed, This is a Family friendly event and kids of all ages are welcome to participate.

All you need to bring is a snack and water.

GEOCACHING IN THE FAIRBANKS REGION

(Moose Creek) 5/11, 1300 No fee. Now take the knowledge you learned from the 101 class to the local community and go out and search for some of the hidden caches. This is a great way to see how geocaching really works and learn about different areas in your community. Makes for a fun filled Family day activity.

BOATER SAFETY COURSE

5/18, 6/1, 6/15; 0900-1200 and 1300-1600 No fee. This class can be done by taking the online Boater Safety Course at www.boatus.org/ onlinecourse.default. asp. Print your certificate and bring to the ORC for your Boater Safety Card to rent nonmotorized boats. For motorized boats bring your certificate and attend one of our Boater Safety Clinics to get the river portion of the class. This course is conducted rain or shine so be sure to bring a raincoat. A Boater Safety Card is issued at the completion of the course and is valid for four years. Everyone renting a watercraft from the Outdoor Recreation

Center is required to have a Boater Safety Card issued from the ORC on Ft. Wainwright. There are no exceptions!

ATV SAFETY COURSE

5/5, 5/19, 6/2; 1300 No fee. Outdoor Recreation will be conducting an ATV Safety Course. This course is required for any of the ATV programs we will be running this summer. This ATV Safety Institute course is provided to promote safe and responsible use of ATV’s, thereby reducing accidents and injuries that may result from improper operation. Be sure to bring gloves and a good pair of over the ankle boots. Tennis shoes are not allowed!

MT. HEALY HIKE

5/19, 0800 Fee: $10/person Hiking up the slopes of Mt. Healy with us, just north of Denali National Park. Wildlife and amazing views are sure to greet us as we venture up the mountain. Be sure to bring water, lunch and snacks. This trail is steep, but well worth the effort!

HARDING LAKE EARLY SUMMER FISHING

5/24, 25, 26; 0900 Fee: $75/adult; $50/youth (15 and under) Prior to the salmon runs

and the halibut moving closer to shore, the lakes are coming alive with fish-a fisherman’s primer for what lies ahead. Although the Northern Pike fishery is closed year round there are still Arctic Char (Dolly Varden), Burbot and Lake Trout for the catching. An Alaska State Fishing License is required!

BEGINNER ROCK CLIMBING 5/24, 0800 Fee: $10/person Come on a day trip to one of the nearby climbing sites to try your hand on some real rock! Outdoor Recreation provides all climbing equipment including helmets, harnesses, shoes, ropes, belay devices, and carabiners. Be sure to pack your own lunch, snacks, and drinks and be prepared for a fun day on the rocks!

ALASKA RANGE MOUNTAIN HIKE

5/25, 0700 Fee: $10/person This day hike will take us into the high country in the mountains where we will see glaciers, soaring mountains and amazing vistas. Don’t forget the camera on this trip, as wildlife abounds in this area as well. Be sure to pack some water, snacks, and lunch. This trip will be one to remember!

(Students will complete 1 glass project, a sun catcher for ages 10+, or a glass mosaic tile for ages under 10.) while learning the steps needed to learn the art of working with stained glass using the copper foil method.

HIRED! APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

Positions with ACS, SKIES, and CYSS now available! The HIRED! Apprenticeship Program provides 15-18 year-old youth with meaningful, professionally managed career-exploration opportunities in Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) operations. The program is open to dependents of active duty, DoD civilian, and retired military personnel. • Candidates must be 15–18 years of age • Must be registered with Child, Youth & School Services (CYS Services) • Must have and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or better • Chosen participants are required to work 15 hours/week for 12 weeks • Additional options and requirements may be offered during the Summer Term • Apprentices may complete up to 2 terms/year for 3 consecutive years For more information, call the MWR Partnership Specialist at 361-9897.

BABY SIGNS: SIGN, SING, AND PLAY CLASSES Thursdays, 0900-0930 at LFCAC Hands on Parent and Child classes that are designed to improve communication with young children. Families will learn signs through song and play–keeping it fun for everyone! This basic signing series of six classes will be offered on a rotating basis and is appropriate for families with children 9 months to 5 years of age. No cost to attend. I’M ALONE WORKSHOP

5/28, 1600-1800 Youth Center, Bldg 4109 The parent portion covers the installation home alone policy, how to determine if your child is ready to be alone, how to ensure the safest home alone experience for children, and what the children are covering in their classroom. Parents receive a workbook to assist in this process. The student portion covers safety, family expectations and house rules, the policy on the installation, and some basic snack ideas. Each student receives an imAlone workbook to assist in preparing for being home alone and to keep all of their important information together.

CYSS BABYSITTER’S COURSE

5/22, 1000-1600 Youth Center, Bldg. 4109 Open to participants ages 13+ American Heart Association CPR (infants, children and adults) and First Aid, and the 4-H Babysitter’s Course. Successful completion of the course offers participants the option of being added to the CYSS Babysitter’s List.
