Meet The guides
The knowledge, personality, and experience of our incredible team of devoted guides is the icing on the cake of our adventure tours. They are dedicated to making your trip a complete success.
Our guides take a great deal of pride in sharing Alaska with you. Well-versed in the destinations you’ll visit, each ensures that you’ll have a rich, authentic, and safe experience so you can relax and enjoy your trip of a lifetime. We sat down with Justin Baugh and Chad Cole, two Outdoor Recreation enthusiasts, and found out just how passionate they are about outdoor adventures.
Chad Cole
Q: How long have you been with the Outdoor Recreation Department and what inspired you to join the team? A: I have been working within Fort Wainwright Family and MWR in many aspects since 2006, where I started as a Recreation Assistant. I love the outdoors; I grew up in the outdoors. What better than to have a job in a field where your possibilities are almost endless, and you have that balance of working in an office but the ability to go outdoors and still complete your job.
Q: What is your favorite outdoor activity? A: I wouldn’t say I have a favorite, because I love to do them all. But I would say that I am probably having the best time if I am fly fishing, hiking, camping, or hunting. If you’re lucky you can put all of those into one trip.
Q: Have you ever had a scary moment while out guiding or exploring? A: I have not had a scary moment out while guiding, nor in my personal experiences. That could be due to luck or it could be the way that I plan and inform all of my participants or friends of the expected outcome. I am very practiced for emergency situations and follow safety protocol before, during, and after my trip, so that if things don’t go as scheduled, protocols can be initiated. 6
Q: Which Outdoor Recreation Center trip are you most looking forward to this summer?
A: Probably the trip Wrangell-St. Elias because it leads to amazing opportunities in just one location.
Justin Baugh Q: How long have you been with the Outdoor Recreation Department and what inspired you to join the team?
A: I have been with Outdoor Recreation since November 2016. I decided to join the team at Fort Wainwright to explore Alaska while expanding my knowledge of the outdoors during the winter months.
Q: What is your favorite Alaskan outdoor activity? A: Definitely dip netting in the Copper and Kenai Rivers, fishing in Valdez and Homer, along with hiking in the greater Fairbanks area.
Q: Why is Leave No Trace such an important part of your outdoor experience?
A: Leave No Trace is an important concept that everyone should follow because it allows for wild animals to strive in their local ecosystems. When I am in the wilderness I practice Leave No Trace by bringing trash bags and totes so that I can pack the trash that I use out with me.

Out of the gate
The views are vast and the fun is endless, so get out of the gate and explore the state! Alaska offers boundless opportunities for outdoor adventure— from rock climbing to paddleboarding, fat tire biking to fresh water fishing, and everything in between. The experienced guides at Outdoor Recreation can lead you on an adventure to remember!
W
e’ve picked out a few of our favorite Outdoor Recreation trips that we think you’re really going to enjoy. Whether you are new to the activity or a seasoned pro, there’s a trip for you! Each trip is lead by one of our expert guides who is there to make your trip comfortable and enjoyable.
Spaces tend to fill up fast— we highly encourage you to reserve your space by calling the Outdoor Recreation Center at (907) 361-6349 or in person at 4050 Glass Drive, Fort Wainwright.
1Chena River King Salmon Quest
The world’s largest salmon species are right under our noses! The trick to finding these fish is to venture into the central waters of the Chena River. Let the Outdoor Recreation Center help by piloting the boat while you do the fishing. 3 days of fishing are available. Don’t forget your fishing license and King Salmon tags!
2Half and Full Day Floats on the Chena River
Floating the Chena River is a classic Interior Alaskan adventure. Whether you choose to float the upper sections of the Chena, or the meandering flow of the lower Chena, Outdoor Recreation is ready to take you there. With shuttles available at put-in and take-out locations, you can customize your activity to fit your schedule.
3Angel Rocks Hike & Soak
The 3.5-mile Angel Rocks Trail loop is a familiar hike to most Interior Alaskans. However, far fewer travel the 8.7 mile trail that ends at Chena Hot Springs. Venture from the top of the loop trail and find yourself in the wilderness. We’ll travel along ridge tops and valleys until we find ourselves at a rewarding end to the day— soaking in the naturally warm springs before being shuttled back home.

3 “don’t miss” trips this season
Silver is Gold T
here’s a gem in Alaska that’s rarer than gold. Even more precious than platinum. It’s the silver salmon and its four close relatives, the King, Sockeye, Pink, and Chum salmon.
If you’ve spent any time in Alaska, you know that salmon are a precious commodity to the state’s inhabitants. The rich meat is full of healthy fats and protein, and delivers a rich flavor known only to Pacific salmon species. Enjoying salmon is easy. Catching it, on the other hand, takes some work. That’s where the Outdoor Recreation Center comes to the rescue! We know the good fishing spots and have the expertise to help you land a lunker at the end of your line. Multiple outings are planned throughout the summer — including day and overnight trips — to the salmon-rich habitats of silver salmon. Many of the locations we have chosen for this year’s trips are to places that may be unreachable unless accessed via boat or special equipment.
Valdez for the Silvers August 24–26
Head out to sea and take home silver salmon! Don’t miss out on the Silver Salmon Derby while you’re in Valdez— come back with the largest catch of the day and cash in on awesome prizes and tall tale fishing stories.
Silver Salmon Fishing on the Delta Clearwater River September 20, 21, 22, or 23
Located a few hours south of Fairbanks, the Delta Clearwater is a crystal clear river that offers incredible silver salmon fishing in the fall. With four trips to choose from, this adventure is great for those looking to get out in the wilderness and experience nonstop biting action.

By traveling and camping on durable surfaces, we can reduce our impact on the environment, and confine the deterioration to a smaller footprint.
14
Leave no trace
We all want that sense of discovery— that sense that no one has been here before us. Leave No Trace allows us to have that experience.
W
e, as users of the land, are responsible for keeping the land looking and feeling untouched so that others that come after us leave with the same feeling of discovery.
We don’t have to impact the land in order to have fun on it. By practicing the Seven Principles of Leave No Trace, we can enjoy our natural world in a sustainable way that avoids humancreated impacts. These principles apply to your backyard and your backcountry.
Plan Ahead and Prepare • Prepare for extreme weather, hazards, and emergencies. • Use a map and compass to eliminate the use of marking paint, rock cairns, or flagging. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces • Durable surfaces include established trails and campsites, rock, gravel, dry grasses or snow. • Good campsites are found, not made. Altering a site is not necessary. • In popular areas: • Concentrate use on existing trails and campsites. • Travel single file in the middle of the trail, even when wet or muddy. • In pristine areas: • Disperse use to prevent the creation of campsites and trails. • Avoid places where impacts are just beginning. Dispose of Waste Properly • Pack it in, pack it out. Inspect your campsite and rest areas for trash or spilled foods. Pack out all trash, leftover food and litter. Leave What You Find • Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them. Do not touch or remove cultural or historic structures and artifacts.
Minimize Campfire Impacts • Campfires can cause lasting impacts to the backcountry. Use a lightweight stove for cooking. • Where fires are permitted, use established fire rings, fire pans, or mound fires. • Burn all wood and coals to ash, put out campfires completely, then scatter cool ashes. Respect Wildlife • Observe wildlife from a distance. Do not follow or approach them. • Never feed animals. Feeding wildlife damages their health, alters natural behaviors, and exposes them to predators and other dangers. • Protect wildlife and your food by storing rations and trash securely. • Control pets at all times, or leave them at home. Be Considerate of Other Visitors • Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience. • Be courteous. Yield to other users on the trail. • Take breaks and camp away from trails and other visitors. • Let nature’s sounds prevail. Avoid loud voices and noises. The following are a selection from the Leave No Trace Seven Principles. © 1999 by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics: www.LNT.org.
EXPERIENCE ALASKA
“
Went on a charter fishing trip through them. This was my first time ever fishing. They were very helpful; ensuring everyone was able to catch something. They offered suggestions and very, very friendly. It was like going on a boat with all friends. I highly recommend them and would go again next year. We caught a variety of fish and had to buy an extra cooler to hold them!

The wild life
W
e are in prime Alaska wildlife viewing, and there is no better place to see wildlife than on the Kenai Peninsula. The Peninsula — roughly 100 miles wide and 200 miles long — boasts every wildlife habitat in the Last Frontier except tundra. That collection of ecosystems provides an excellent opportunity to see creatures of all shapes and sizes. There also is an extensive network of roadways, hiking trails, and waterways that hep get you closer to nature and everything it has to offer. We’ve picked out two of our favorite locations to get wildlife photos from the Peninsula. Don’t forget your camera!
Resurrection Bay What to see: Sea otters, bald eagles, seals, whales, killer whales, salmon, shorebirds This region contains deep fjords, shallow coves, estuaries, and beaches. The relatively protected waters and shoreside state parklands attract an array of marine wildlife. It’s not uncommon to find more than a dozen species of birds on a single beach area at a time, while eagles frequent the towering Sitka spruces of this coastal temperate rainforest climate. Located adjacent to the harbor town of Seward, he bay is a favorite for kayakers and recreationists. Getting there: Seward and nearby Resurrection Bay are located at the southern end of the Seward Highway.
Kenai Fjords What to see: Sea otters, whales, marine life, shorebirds The fjords and islands of Kenai Fjords National Park and the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge showcase the best of the state’s marine world. Puffins and other seabirds perch and nest along cliff faces just above the swells. Otters float belly-up eating mussels and clams, while harbor seals haul out on icebergs off Aialik and Northwestern glaciers. Humbpack and killer whales spend the summer fattening up on herring and salmon. This truly is a wildlife enthusiast’s dream! Getting there: Several companies offer half-day and full-day excursions to the Chiswell Islands and Kenai Fjords National Park. Charter boats, water taxis, and sea kayak tours offer options to spend more time in remote areas. While the trailers are not equipped with running water, there is a modern bathhouse with hot showers located within walking distance of the trailers. Each trailer is equipped with a stove, refrigerator, microwave, and sink. Customers are responsible for providing their own bedding, linens, pillows, towels, kitchen utensils, etc. Group Rentals Nestled close to the waterfalls within the campground, large group areas provide plenty of room for group camping, reunions, birthday parties, weddings, and other family events. Inquire upon reserving for pavilions and grills. Advance reservations are required.
