Denpasar is often being ignored when a visitor comes to Bali. Despite being the capital city, it has nothing of the Bali that people have in mind. There is no beach or dramatic green ricefield. It is still not long ago when “let’s hang out in Gajah Mada” (or in Bahasa Indonesia, “jalan-jalan di Gajah Mada) was often uttered by the Balinese, for it was the most “happening” stretch of road. A few decade ago, Gajah Mada was once the center of trade for the whole island. There was a large food market, art market, restaurants, a cinema, and plenty of shophouses selling everything one might need, from medicine to electronics. Cars, motorbikes, horse carts, jeepneys, and bicycles were competing against each other on the narrow stretch of the road. Tall shophouses with eclectic styles were the backdrop for the hullabaloo, late into the night. They are the silent, imposing witnesses of the transformation that have happened and will continue to happen on Jalan Gajah Mada.

The historical development of Gajah Mada did not happen overnight. The occupation of the Dutch interfered with the making of the area as a trading hub after Kuta ceased to be the main port of Bali after 1849. After the fall of Buleleng kingdom, the Dutch turned the coast of Singaraja as the port, while Kuta was transformed into a tourism destination. On 1907, the location of the market that belongs to the Badung kingdom was moved to its current position as Badung Market. Back then, the Badung Market was inhabited by the Javanese and Madurese community. Later, they were given a place on Wonosari or “the Javanese Village” (Kampung Jawa), as it is now known. The area of Badung Market continued to flourish. Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan Sulawesi later were occupied by the Chinese, Arab and Indian traders who eventually settled, opened their business and lived there. The descendants of those early immigrants still live in Gajah Mada until now. Some of them have left the shophouses, leaving some shophouses permanently closed and bereft. Walking down the recently named “Gajah Mada Heritage Area”, one can catch some
glimpses from the past. Busy Chinese medicine shops that seem as old as the street itself, like the Saudara or the Po On are still swarmed by the locals. Textile and electronic shops are selling their wares side by side. Classic Chinese restaurants such as Atoom Baru and Hong Kong also are part of an indispensable story of Gajah Mada. Truly, one can still shop for everything on the long stretch of the street, including coffee. It is one of the most successful business story born in the close-knit Chinese community of Gajah Mada. The aroma of freshly grounded coffee wafting from Bhineka Jaya is legendary. The small coffee shop concealed the fact that the company is one a successful coffee producer in Bali, if not in Indonesia. It was founded by Bian Ek Hoo who has managed to export coffee beans to Singapore during the Dutch occupation. On 1935, he finally managed to build his factory. The company is now being managed by the third generation member of the family, although some of the older generation of Chinese Balinese still refers to the shop as “Bian Ek”. A cup of this historical coffee will certainly make a visit to Gajah Mada as a memorable occasion.

The Minikino Film Fest the 2nd finally come to a closing in the island of Gods. A festival dedicated for short movie enthusiasts were held in 11 different venues in Bali, which ranging from the northern coastal part of Bali to the southern part of this island consisting four different regencies; Badung, Karangasem, Gianyar and Buleleng. All the films that were screened throughout the festival are complete with age rating guide and film information, aiming for suitable space for public to get entertaining treats or movie enthusiasts especially those whose are into short movies. All festival programs are free of charge, this are to ensure that the educational and entertainment part are well delivered to the market and all the way to the grass roots. Biggest gratitude to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa - God Almighty for his abundant of blessing that PT Akasa Media Aksara successfully issuing a free magazine containing tourism information of Bali which having bilingual concept; Chinese and English as a connecting hub to promote spreading promotion and information for business owner in Bali to Chinese tourist. The vibe of Bali are getting stronger and become top of mind and favorite destination for tourists especially from China. As been told by the Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya, that there are 85 percent of tourists from China choose Bali as their place of Interest. The rest 15 percent are spreaded to Jakarta, Manado, Singkawang, Batam and Central Java. The 3 greaters are heavily promoted in Chinese market, the Three Greaters destinations are great Bali, great Batam and great Jakarta. Based on visitor track record of Chinese tourists that provided by Tourism Department Bali that in the last 4 years there are significant rising interest, therefore we fully support and celebrating the issue of FunBali Magazine that will increase the information and promotion of tourism in Bali. So the target of reaching 20 million of tourists can be reached in 2019. And Chinese become the potential market beside Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Japan and Korea. In the event of Chinese New Year, the vibes are strong and suddenly become the agenda for welcoming many tourists in Bali. At least 70 thousands tourists from China visits Indonesia. Deputy of Abroad Marketing Development explains Garuda Indonesia as national airline gained 65 charter flight from 11 cities in China and Bali as the main destination who posses a proper infrastructures and goodwill in tourism
