The Chinese and Balinese relationship is more than just a social relationship between settlers and the natives. There has been a solid marriage of acculturation. The Balinese saw the early Chinese settlers as the ‘older siblings’ and unhesitantly incorporated the Chinese culture into their art, tradition and rituals. Chinese Lion Dance, Barong Landung (Tall Puppets) and Gong Beri, an ensemble orchestra, are some of the example of the influence of Chinese culture in Balinese art performances. While in the literature, the love story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai or locally known as Sampik Ingtai was transformed into various form such as pupuh or Balinese chanting, Arja Dance, Drama Gong and today’s popular pop song. A renowned folklore in Bali is of a marriage between King Sri Raja Jayapangus with a Chinese princess named Kang Cing Wei on the 12th century. There are several version of this story, referring to the Balingkang Temple in Kintamani as the royal palace of this interracial couple. There are still plenty of other evidences. The Balinese architecture adopted the Chinese tradition, in the carvings and decoration. Also, the usage of Chinese coins or ‘uang kepeng’ , the crossbreed of Chinese dog with local dog that produce the Kintamani Dog species and even the existence of longan trees in the Payangan area, brought long time ago the early Chinese settlers. The Chinese-Balinese community are spreaded all around Bali, such as Kintamani, Klungkung, Pupuan, Payangan, Gianyar and Denpasar. They arrived in
groups on different centuries. Some of them lived in the town as traders, while the others lived in villages as farmers like the natives. Quite a lot of them converted to Hinduism while still practicing their ancestral rituals from China. The marriages between Chinese settlers with Balinese (usually, women) did not eliminate each other’s tradition and beliefs. It is common to find two altars in the residences of Chinese-Balinese families, a Chinese ancestor altar and pelinggih or home temple. Both altars receive equals respects. In few of Bali’s biggest temples like Ulun Danu Batur Temple and Besakih Temple, a special Chinese altar called ‘Ratu Syahbandar’ can be found and worshipped for prosperity. Through the ages, the Chinese and Balinese community have been seamlessly lived together in harmony. During the discriminating reign of President Soeharto (1966-1998) toward the Chinese ethnic group, the Balinese community did not pay any heed. They have received and embraced the Chinese community as an inseparable part of the family. Unfortunately, there is hardly any publication about the Chinese-Balinese community. This is the opportunity for public to get to know the stories and figures of this essential community, as well as strengthening the multicultural bond that have been interwoven for centuries. It is also a positive campaign for Indonesia and the world about how multiculturalism does exist and actively working in Bali. FunBali FunBaliMagazine Magazine| 017 | 17

Culture Balichinesia research started from one simple question, popped by Dicky Lopulalan after a brief chat about our love for culture and history. “Do you have a book about the history and culture of Chinese community in Bali?” asked Dicky to me, a Chinese – Balinese myself. No, was my reply. I told him that I do have books about Chinese community in other places in Indonesia, but not a single book about the Chinese-Balinese community. “Why don’t we write it?” asked Dicky. Of course, I said yes. It propelled Bali Lite Institute to work together with a photographer from Jakarta, Timur Angin. Together, we gave birth to a baby, Balichinesia. Since two years ago, we took our time to travel around the island. With a simple camera, borrowed tripod, cool mixtape and a list of sources, we began our journey. We started with the familiar sources, family members and the friends of friends, the elders, connecting them one by one. Drinking countless cups of of black coffees. Exchanging stories about the past, either bitter or sweet. We have visited the coastal area, old graveyard, clan house, shophouses, food kiosk, temples to private houses.
I thought I knew enough about the life of a ChineseBalinese. The trips I took proved otherwise. We also learned that time is now crucial. The longer we took, the more stories are missing. The first and second generations of the Chinese pioneers are long gone; the third generation is reducing fast, while the generation after them is getting further away from their origins. This is our first article out of a series of article that will be published in Fun Bali magazine. Our wish is when you visit Bali, you will find an interesting perspective and experience about the identity of Chinese community diaspora on this Island of God. In the next articles, we will share our findings about the aspects of ChineseBalinese heritage such as architecture, tradition, history, culinary, myths and its people. Feel free to contact us if you have a story or simply would like to contribute to this research at apakabar@litebali.com Enjoy Bali!

amasan Art Village
Kamasan art village in Klungkung regency are located 29km outreach of Denpasar city, with the newly built “Ida Bagus Mantra highway, the traveling time could be cut down to almost 1,5 hours, from previously could took possibly for more than two hours. This village stood proud in this cool climate area, having coined as an art village that become the housing of many painting artists, whether it’s the seminal new comer or the mentor.

Fun Bali Magazine manage to come and had a chat with Bapak Nyoman Mandra, a 70 ++ years old artist who also mentor to many of art students, either local or International students. An aged person with full of persona spoke softly with glistening eyes.
FBM: So since when you involved in this art scene?
NM: Started from when I was in 3rd grade of primary school, those time I was using bamboo media such as farmers hat, hand fan, clutch bag and so on, then from 7th grade I start to paint on canvas.
FBM: What set the difference between Kamasan painting styles compared to other paintings?
NM: Basically Kamasan style is the first form of painting in Bali, the seminal kind, with its classic style, 2 dimension. This style have the highest level of difficulty since the drawing have single line of outline, all drawing have to be done in a single swipe of brush, can not be undone or covering it by overlaying.
Bapak Nyoman Mandra 70++ yrs Kamasan Artist
FunBali Magazine | 023
Art 除了用帆布,您还用其它来作画么? FBM: What other painting you do outside on a canvas?
NM: I handle the refurbishment of Kertha Gosa ceiling (Balinese pavilion/courtyard built back in 18th century in downtown Klungkung) back in 1981, supervising the painting on the ceiling of Fakultas Sastra Udayana. FBM: what story usually your paintings tell about?
NM: plenty and it depends on request, but mostly Ramayana epos, some are Sutasoma since it hold some of Buddhist mindset FBM: tell me more about the character of Kamasan artwork
NM: we don’t jump color, as in no contrast coloring since we honing the classical coloring technique. Fine outlining and natural coloring. FBM: natural coloring?
NM: yes, we use some specific oceanic coral, or “Pere” as Balinese says. These kind of coral are hard to find these days. Usually we search for it at Serangan island, but since the island are being reclamated, all the corals are gone, so we preserve the stock we have strictly for painting temple only. But for commercial need we use acrylic paint.
So, there’s some interesting facts about Kamasan art village. One exquisite humble village but packed with talents, and the talents that been passed trough generations. Spare your holiday time to give a brief visit. It would be a remarkable one. Painter in the traditional style, Kamasan (Klungkung regency), Bali 24 | FunBali Magazine

Gourmet’s World The full day of torrential rain that bring down the city’s temperature into 28’C had made Denpasar city Hong Kong during monsoon, and with Garoupa’s outdoor signage christened wit neon lights, it is feels like Hong Kong. The wide – bright yet clean appearance are truly impressive, Rudi, the friendly Operation Manager greeted us and being straightforward with the situation where the kitchen and floor staff are in frenzy due to Chinese New Year period, even it can cater 200 seating customers. “On the Chinese New Year day, we have to give 2 hours time for guests to enjoy their diner, otherwise we can not cater everyone who come and need to be seated”. Just like a floodgate being opened, and with crowds flowing like that, they don’t lie about the food. Let’s start with the Garoupa, the reef fish which name are chosen to be this restaurant’s title are 100% fresh, steamed to perfection, where this method lock it’s meat tenderness and then smothered in secret sauce. The seafood spring roll with strawberry are succulent, the strawberry touch gave a good swing of new taste into this perfectly deep fried crispiness roll. While the Fried prawn with barley, it’s where the slight sweetness of the prawn muddled nicely in breaded coating with heavy amount of barley for extra crispiness without giving a bland taste on your palate.

Spiritual World
Galungan & Kuningan Days In Western world, Christmas are being celebrated as a moment where all family members get together, dine the special comfort food, practically, a festive time of the year. Here in Bali, the Balinese also have a similar day, it’s called Galungan and Kuningan, a day where the period which span roughly for a week; three days of Galungan which usually fall from Tuesday to Thursday and Kuningan usually fall on the Saturday on the following week. The date is calculated according to the 210 day Balinese calendar, which also means, these festive days are celebrated twice a year. A particular day where coined as a winning day where Dharma (good) defeat Adharma (evil). The core meaning of Galungan is to unify the power of own spirit in a way to be able to think and act with clear mind within, which symbolize the Dharma side in each of us. Happy belated Galungan and Kuningan our fellow Balinese friends.

Nyepi Day
036| FunBali 36 | FunBali Magazine Magazine
Some call it “Black Day”, “Silent Day”, or even “Quite Day”, but nonetheless it’s all referring into one particular day that is “Nyepi Day”. This special day that only exists in Bali come up once in every year as Balinese New year. Why so special? Well, obviously this would be the day where all noises, activities; even lights are prohibited in Bali. This is the form of the beginning of Caka New Year/Balinese New Year according to Balinese calendar. One day before Nyepi, its a day is called Pengerupukan or Bhuta Yadnya, a ritual activity is performed by family by walking around the house making noises by beating frying pan/ canister in order to ward off the bad spirit and vanquish the negative elements. In the evening of this day, the yearly awaited parade; Ogohogoh will take place. Demonic statues made of bamboo and paper symbolizing the demons and bad elements will be paraded around the city. Usually a short theatrical performance will take place once each ogoh-ogoh hit the city’s main intersection road, and later after all performance, these carefully handcrafted masterpieces will be burnt down. The Nyepi day itself will commence from 6am till 6am on the next day. The day is aimed for the Balinese Hindu to do self-reflection as they entering the new Caka year; anything that will distract them is purely restricted. These prohibition factors would cover no working, no entertainment, and no traveling; even for some they would include full day fasting. Therefore, Nyepi will be the only day where the city lights switched into a pitch dark, intersection road riddled by cars will turn into ghost town and the only noise you’d hear might be from either dogs, birds or roosters. It’s truly a special day to enjoy, even for some are frantically trying to leave the island beforehand. But somehow, silence is what we need amidst this hustle-bustle life.
