It is told that long ago when the brave Admiral Cheng Ho sailed in one of his grand voyage, he anchored off the shore of Bali. On one of his ship was a cong po or cook in Hokkien language. The misty hills of Batur captured his imagination, so much so that he decided to stay. He brought with him some clothing, a pair of slippers, a bamboo smoke-pipe, a meat-chopper, and some groundnuts, lychees, and white onions. Later, a Balinese woman captured his heart, and soon he asked for her hands in marriage. After his marriage, he settled in Batur and had a very beautiful daughter which he
named Kang Kim Hoi or Golden Flower. In turn, she captured the King of Batur’s attention and became his queen. It was said that when her father - the cook- passed away, a temple was erected outside a Balinese temple complex in his memory. But then, an epidemic swept the village and causing many deaths. The people said that the old cook was unhappy that his temple was built outside the temple complex. And so, a temple once built for the cong po was rebuilt inside the temple complex, where it still stands until today.

Pura Ulun Danu Batur was intact and the people thought that it was a good sign to continued living there. However, on the year of 1926, a powerful eruption happened again. This time, the only remain of the temple was the highest shrine of Dewi Danu. They decided to rebuild the temple on a much higher ground, where it is currently located. The story of Pura Ulun Danu Batur and its Chinese shrine is one of the best illustrations on how the acculturation of Balinese and Chinese culture has developed over the centuries. There, on the misty highland of Kintamani, a temple is standing tall, a concrete reminder on how all of us can learn from the past.

Pura Ulun Danu Batur is considered as the second most important temple after the mother temple, Besakih. It is where the Goddess of the Lake, Dewi Danu, is said to reside. The high, eleven tiered meru or pagoda is the first thing that we see when we visit the gray stoned temple. The Balinese believe that the purpose to pray on this temple is to strengthen their spirituality in building the prosperity. To achieve prosperity, men must toil on their land, trade or farm. All of those efforts are impossible without the presence of water. Hence, the temple of the Goddess of the Lake, where the island’s resources of water supply comes from, is considered important. Before the Mount Batur eruption on 1917, the temple was located on the north west of the mountain. The volcanic eruption destroyed thousands of houses, temples and took so many lives on its trail. Magically,

“We call the God in Cong Po Kong as Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar,” explains a worshiper to us. She is a Balinese lady, clad in white brocade top and sarong. She said that the Chinese shrine or Kongco Cong Po Kong is venerated by the Balinese as well as the Chinese Balinese community. “Everybody who comes to this temple, also pray here, whatever their faith may be. There is no different,” said the lady, who after putting her offerings on the altar, kneel down and pray. The musky fragrant smoke from the incense sticks fills the cold air. A mangku or priest, received her offerings and put it inside the inner edifice, where only the priest can access. At the top of the edifice, a signage titled Cong Po Kong is carved on wood with a golden lettering. Two stone dragons are guarding the stair to the inner shrine, while on the porch, a set of Chinese soldiers statue are staring at the worshippers with alertness. A beautifully red and gold carved door is kept locked, keeping its magical secret from preying eyes. The architecture of the shrine is unmistakably Balinese, and yet the wooden pillars and its tied fabrics are the red synonymous with Chinese culture.

Layangan Pecukan
Layangan Bebean
kiting Doesn’t matter from which part of the world you are from, flying a kite is always a fun thing to do. Some days of our childhood were filled with both sweating and running with pulling kites to make it airborne or perhaps running with friends chasing a loose kite. Kites were literally inseparable from our life, either it’s in the past or even some adults do still love to rise one these days. As for people in Bali, kites perhaps did not have a strong line of history background compared to other cultural activity such as ogohogoh. According to Endang Ernawati; founders of Museum of Kites Indonesia, tradition of flying a kite or “melayangan” in Bali are related with the end of

harvesting season. After farmer’s families are done with harvesting activity, most of the time is for rice field, the kids will use their extra time to fly a kite.
Until this day, melayangan is still a big part of an outdoor activity for Balinese, young or adults are draw into this activity, especially during the mid of the year period, from June – August when the winds are usually strong, and these periods are when the traditional kiting competition took place. Hundreds of “sekaa layangan” or kiting group representing each “banjar” or local community meet up at the competition place, which usually either it’s a beach or a wide empty land.
The kinds of kites for this event usually the 3 main kites for Balinese, they are “Bebean”; a kite shaped like a fish, which it will move and flow in the wind like a movement of an actual fish. “Pecukan”; a four cornered kite with its distinctive character, which is able to be “steered” so the kite could move-swing and even making radical movement, this required a skilled control person. While third one would be the infamous “Janggan”; a kite that resemble a dragon, with it’s super long tail that could reach 20 meter in length and require up to 20 adults to make it fly. Janggan are the great yet graceful one, due to its long tail and the style it’s airborne with full of charisma.
