The connotation of “sister island” seems like bringing the image of “slightly lower in something” compared to the main island. But for Lembongan island, the sister island of Penida, things gone the other way around. Lembongan island obviously smaller in stature compared to Penida, but for some unexplained reasons, Lembongan are peppered with tourists attraction compared to her bigger sister. Last weekend, FunBali Magazine had a weekend trip to Lembongan and have a first hand experience on what she had to offer. www.funbalimagz.com

Interview with Chinese diving instructor in Lembongan
Vivian
What make you choose diving as a career? Water covers 70% of the earth’s surface. And anywhere there is water, there are divers wanting to explore. I have chosen diving as a career, because I feel so proud that when I teach people diving, it is more like I hand in the key of the 70% of the world to them, for that moment when they have a license for diving , their world becomes complete. It really feels great that your office is right in the deep blue water. Where did you get your dive master/instructor certification? I took my dive master training in Koh Tao Thailand, bali is the place that I took the IE exam and became an instructor. Dive affiliation? I am Padi and SSI Instructor Reason of choosing Bali as your base Here you can enjoy impressive wall dives, often find sun fish (mola mola) in season and dive with manta rays on Manta Point or Manta Bay. Explore the Liberty Wreck in Tulamben and enjoy the wonderful critters of Puri Jati. And the local Balinese culture is also amazing. People here always smiling and friendly. What’s the highlight of your diving career that you get in Bali? I spend most of my time diving around Nusa Lembongan. A lot of divers said here lots of the dive sites has strong current and it become the reason that they are afraid to dive here. But for me I love play with the current, only here you can experience a real drift dive and your diving experience would be improved. Here, diving with the breathtaking mantas on Nusa Penida’s Manta Point or discover the beautiful reefs, so much to see. www.funbalimagz.com
| 017
Where’s your favorite dive site in Bali? Manta Bay and Crystal Bay Favorite dive site in Indonesia? Not yet been to all of them, still exploring. So far, love all the places I have been diving in Indonesia. Where else in the world that you’ve been dive? Thailand, the Philippine and Australia Dream dive site that you want to visit soon? Rajah Ampat and Wakatobi Lembongan and Penida are notorious for it’s strong current, how do you explain this to your guests without making them scared? A detailed briefing before diving is very important, and I always focus on the safety during the dive. Current is not scary at all once you know how to play with it and there are a lot world best dive sites with strong current, like Maldives, Komodo and Galapagos in south America. If you never experience the current, how can you go to those places ? What do you see the progress of diving business in Bali? Bali has been a popular destination for diving for a long time. The diving business here is quite developed, that is why it attracts divers from all over the world. Do you see a bright future of Chinese market in diving business in Bali? Yes, I do. Before, Chinese people only know Bali as a tourist spot, but right now more and more divers coming to dive. I wish more divers from China could come but meanwhile we should have the sense of diving safety as well as protecting the ocean here. Any last words about people who want to have their first dive in Bali?

The diving seasons are here, the sun is up, and water is warm. You arrive at the dive resort, get your diving gear prepared to suit your size, tanks, BCD, mask, fins, wetsuits are loaded up to the van and you heading to Sanur. Get on the boat, engines revving and you find yourself and few others speeding across the Badung straits. Heading to Lembongan and Penida for a diving excursion with a mission. A mission for Mola-mola and manta rays is on the go. Plenty of scuba divers headed to the Lembongan and Penida island this period, aiming for diving session hoping to meet these giants; Mola – Mola and Manta rays before their own eyes So, here are some quick details and fun facts about these wonderful creatures: 1. Manta Rays (Manta Birostris) - These beautiful creatures can be found almost all year long at manta Point and manta bay - Their average size can reach from 400cm to 600cm from wing to wing. That is 4 to 6 meters span - Sometimes they make a spectacular leaps above the waters, these act are could be either their way to communicate, getting rid of body parasites or simply a playful act - They do not represent a significant threat to humans - Their food usually consists of mainly zooplankton
2. Mola – Mola / Sun Fish - The largest sunfish ever measured are 4m across, and weigh 2,5 ton. Average weight are 650kg - Sunfish don’t really have a normal tail like others, instead they have appendage called a clavus, which is the result of the fusion of dorsal and anal fin rays. - Even they don’t have tail like others, they do able to leap above the water - Their food are preferably jelly fish and plankton - Despite their gigantic size and menacing look, they are purely harmless to human. www.funbalimagz.com

King Sri Jayapangus is head over heels in love. The heart that belongs to the ruler of Panarojan kingdom, which area is spanned from the north coast of Bali to the mountainous Kintamani, is beating nervously. He fell in love with Kang Cing We, a Chinese merchant daughter who visited his kingdom. In his eyes, Kang Cing We is perfection. Her beautiful features, her small tiny almond shaped eyes, her porcelain white and soft complexion, her sweet smile as well as her gentle voice. There are no women in his kingdom comparable to her beauty. His heart fell apart. Kang Cing We continuously appears in his mind and he is determined to have her as his wife. His advisor, Mpu Siwagandu, refuse his wish. According to his counsel, the marriage should never take place because of the religion differences between the King who worship Shiva and the Buddhist Kang Cing We. Other than that, the King already have a wife, Queen Sri Parameswari Induja Ketanayang of Lake Batur, often praised for her noble wisdom. Mpu Siwagandu warns the King, if he continued with his plan, the kingdom will be doomed. photo courtesy by Timur Angin
Instead of following the counsel of his loyal advisor, King Jayapangus fired him and continues with his wedding. Witnessed by the Shiva and Buddhist priests, his ministers and royal consort, King Jayapangus weds Kang Cing We, Her father presents two pieces of Chinese coins, or pis bolong in Balinese, for her daughter, as a token of her endowment as a wife. The story is more folklore, than an actual history. There are several version of the story that still being retold among the Balinese. In one version, it is said that Kang Cing We was a daughter of King Jayapangus’s other advisor, Mpu Lim. While another version said that she was a stranded daughter of a Chinese merchant whose ship was wrecked on the north coast of Bali. There is even a version that mentioned Kang Cing We as the daughter of Admiral Cheng Ho’s cook, who decided to live in Bali. www.funbalimagz.com

The end of the love story of this couple is varied. In one version, it is said that they lived happily ever after, reigning successfully over their joyful subjects. While another version said, because the couple has had no children, the King went to Mount Batur to ask the God for a gift of lineage. On the way, he was enchanted by the beauty of Goddess Danu, had an affair with her and managed to sire a son named Maya Danawa. Kang Cing We who has been anxiously waiting for her husband to come back, started to get worry and decided to go to Mount Batur to find him. She found him in the arms of Goddess Danu. The Goddess angered by King Jayapangus’ lies, for he admitted to her that he was unmarried, killed the King and the unfortunate Kang Cing Wei. Their subjects, who have loved the royal couple deeply, built a statue and named it Stasura and Bhati Mandul. This statue is later known in different form as Barong Landung or tall puppets. Inside the Pura Dalem Balingkang, one can find Ratu Ayu Subandar shrine, which has become part of the temple’s structure. The shrine is believed to be the place of worship for Kang Cing We and a place to ask for blessing until now. From the viewpoints of history, as mentioned in the book History of Bali by I Wayan Ardika, I Gde Parimartha and AA Bagus Wirawan, the existence of King Jayapangus did appear in the lineage of Ancient Balinese Kings. His title was Paduka Sri Maharaja Haji Jayapangus and he reigned on the year 1178 – 1181 AD.On the Cempaga stone inscription, the name of Sri Maharaja Haji Jayapangus and his two queens, Bhatari Sri Prameswari Indujaketana and Sri Mahadewi Sasangkajacihna, were mentioned. On the Sukawana inscription, the village of Sukawana was mentioned being destroyed by thunder storm which wrecked the palace of Jayapangus, and therefore jong les moved to Balingkang. The existence of Pura Dalem Balingkang as a temple as well as the palace of an ancient Balinese King was also written on “Pengeling-eling Desa Les-Penuktukan, Tejakula, Buleleng” which was issued by King Jaya Kasunu around the 11th century. He was known as the heir of King Jayapangus Harkajalancana.

Regarding the harmonious relation between Shivaism and Buddhism on the 11th century, prove can be found in the saying “namasiwaya namoduddhaya” inscribed on the Landih A and Nongan A stone inscription. These two stones were issued during the reign of King Jayasakti, a king who ruled thirty years before King Jayapangus. The saying referred to the King’s devotion to not just the God of Shiva but to the Lord Buddha. In a larger context, it showed that the King at that time was attentive and protective toward both of the religions. Jayapangus and Kang Cing We’s tale are believed to be the beginning of Chinese influence in Bali. The usage of Chinese coins or pis bolong were also known as a legal barter tool in the past, and are still being used by the Balinese, as part of the ceremonial or religious rites. The history can be traced back all the way to China, from the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 24 AD) to Qing Dynasty (1644 -1912 AD). Here in Bali, the coins from Han and Qing Dynasty can both be found. “Baris Cina” is a folk dance that describes the strength of Balingkang soldiers. Even, in the area surrounding Pura Dalem Balingkang, there are villages with vaguely Chinese names such as Ping-gan or Saikin. The historian and archeologists are unable to prove the truth of the love story. There is simply not enough evidence. In spite of that, the experts are able to conclude that the relationship between the Balinese with the Chinese was harmonious and long standing. That relationship was not just made in the economic context, but also socially, politically, religiously and culturally. The tale of Jayapangus and Kang Cing We can be seen as a symbol of highly important marriage of culture. Indeed, in the history of Chinese in Bali, marriage has been a vital medium in a marriage between two cultures. The Chinese merchants and immigrants who came to Bali were mostly unmarried and dominantly consisted of men. When they arrived in Bali, they wedded the Balinese women and raised their children in two cultures and tradition. This could happen because both sides were praying to their own ancestors. One prayed on the table to the Chinese ancestor of the father’s lineage while the others went to the shrine, to pray to the mother’s Balinese ancestor. Custom, belief, ritual, traditional and cultural attributes are infused, completed and strengthen each other. It is universally acknowledged, that in the every tradition of advanced civilization, marriage is the best way to unify diversity. (*)

Most of the indigenous people of Nusa Lembongan are successful seaweed farmer with good gaining such as big house, temple and large bale banjar (village townhall), but these people on the otherside also anxious about losing the next generation who willing to continue the tradition as the next seaweed farmer. The reason is the young generations tend to choose for a career path in tourism industry. Second reason is the inconsistent weather and water temperature, which will make the seaweed farming become one delicate industry. Plus the pollution coming from household waste and tourism waste that will make the seaweed business getting tougher. The seaweed plantation are pioneered by the late Made Kawijaya or so called Pan Tarsin who at first providing food for his family simply by hunting turtles and collecting rare ocean corals to sell. Later on one day a person from Farming Department of Klungkung Regency came over and introduced the seaweed farming technique to the local villagers. “The person came over with two different seaweed seeds weighing 5kg, since the turtle are less profiting then the people start to turn their hope to this seaweed farming” add Wayan Tarzan, the son of Pan Tarsin, which later receiving the governmental award named Kalpataru, an award given to citizen whose considered as environmental hero. The first two years, the seaweed farming have not showing good response, until one day a buyer from Sulawesi came over and bought the dried seaweed for Rp 300/kg, since that day, the business of seaweed growing fast and to these days, the price reaching up from Rp 5000 – 8000 per kg and this natural commodity have big buyer from either Taiwan or Japan market for their FnB and cosmetic needs. 40 |

Beside seaweed farming, Pan Tarsin and his son also saw an opportunity about tourism in his area and decided to build a simple homestay called Johny Losmen, one of the oldest homestay in Lembongan. These days, Lembongan island is officially a heavy contender for Bali island herself because of two big attraction that this island owned; diving and snorkeling, and not to forget the scenery of seaweed farmer with his small dinghy and hundreds of it scattered on the beach are unbeatable.
Once upon a time in Penida Island, the island were ruled by a powerful king named Dukuh Jumpungan, he is a master in architect, maritime and spiritually strong. He have a son named Aji Dalem Sawang who later on have two sons I Renggan and I Renggin. LEMBONGAN The Sister Island of Bali
Great Days! Finally we launch the second edition of the magazine. I truly didn’t expect the market response would be this big. We even have to restock our magazines to pick up points in just in matter of days I would give the biggest gratitude to our readers whose accepting our debut edition. Thank you also to all of our friends and partners who helped us in distributing this edition. We will launch our online edition of this magazine in weibo and wechat, in a way for our reader could participate in the future editions. In this edition we will ultimately talking about Lembongan island, a small sister island located in the east part of Bali. In the last few years, Lembongan gained it’s popularity amongst the tourists, this island is the new destination of interest. In this island you’ll find a traditional and quite environment. The main activity in this island would be water sports, diving, snorkeling or simply a play in the shore. We also talk about the history of Lembongan, from back in the day to the current day. There still be Balichinesia, an article about the cultural history of Chinese in Bali, which in this issue will talk about the the great temple of Balingkang, a temple with heavy Chinese influence.
