What you need to know to enter the Cruise or Show

Saturday, June 4, 2016 Hours: The Show ‘N Shine is held from 8am until 4pm. The Cruise runs from 6pm until 9pm. Awards ceremony is at 3pm and raffle winners are announced at 3:30pm at the booth on 6th Ave. and Greenwood St. Registration: Open from 8am until 7pm in downtown Junction City on Greenwood St. between 4th Ave. and 5th Ave. Pre-registration is now available through May 14, 2016. After May 14, registration forms must be filled out on the day of the event - no exceptions. Drivers must be licensed and must present vehicle registration for proof of eligibility. Eligibility: In the Show ‘N Shine, all makes and models are invited! In the Cruise, vehicles must be 1974 and older. Sorry, but no 4-wheel drive vehicles and no motorcycles are allowed in the Cruise. Event Rules: All local laws will be enforced. While cruising you must follow all traffic laws, including all traffic lights. No breaking traction, no hydraulics and no open exhaust during the Cruise is allowed. All passengers must remain seated. If any rules are violated, you are at risk of being kicked out of the cruise and may be ticketed by law enforcement.

Welcome to the Function 4 Junction

he biggest car show in the Southern Willamette Valley grew a little bigger once again in 2015 as more than 400 cars parked downtown during the Show ‘N Shine and at least 800 rolled the streets in the Cruise. We added another city block to the Show venue to make room for all those new entries, and we’re prepared to expand a little more again this year if needed. It’s our hard-working volunteer crews who make this all possible. Volunteers control traffic and parking, they operate barricades, provide information and register the vehicles. Board members and volunteers sell raffle tickets and distribute this free magazine in the month before the Function; they set everything

up on the morning of the event; they judge the Show ‘N Shine entries and they even clean up the downtown streets afterwards. The local business community plays a huge part in making the event possible by advertising in this magazine and by contributing a wide range of goods and services that is too long to list here. Their commitment helps make the Function a safe, fun and successful day for everyone. A special thanks goes out to Jeff Prociw of the state Transportation Dept.; Jennifer Paugh with the county Public Works Dept.; Junction City planner Jordan Cogburn;

and the crew at the city’s Public Works department. They make sure we are in compliance with all rules involved in staging an event of this size. The Junction City Police Department and Chief Mark Chase have always supported the Function. They keep the event safe for 15,000 folks, more or less, who spend at least part of their day in Junction City enjoying what has become one of the most popular car shows in Oregon. rom its beginning in 1995, the Function 4 Junction has been a celebration of the history of American automobiles – a history that extends back more than 130 years. It also serves as a showcase for the challenging craft of auto restoration as well as an expression of the passion that many people feel towards their favorite make and model of classic car. But mostly it’s a chance to have some fun while taking in the scene, talking about cars and in the process, doing good things for the community. Since 2006, both the Show ’N Shine and the Cruise have been held within the Junction City limits, using the main drag of our small Willamette Valley town as a cruise route. The Show A brief history ‘N Shine has moved from the often-muddy high school of the football field to the paved streets at the center of town. Function 4 Junction More than 10,000 people come every year to enjoy the day, watch the cruisers and inspect the show cars. It’s the second largest event held in Junction City and it’s grown into one of the most popular car shows in Oregon. The Show is open 8am-4pm, centered at the corner of 6th Avenue and Greenwood Street. Awards are announced and presented around 3pm, and then everyone gets ready for the main event – the Cruise! Spectators line both sides of Ivy Street, the city’s name for the four lanes of Hwy. 99 that run through the center of town. The Cruise traditionally begins at 6pm with two antique fire trucks leading the way. Automobiles of every make, model and vintage cruise up and down the main drag until 9pm and the Cruise officially ends. A volunteer board of directors now manages the non-profit organization that stages the events and continues the mission of offering scholarships and grants that are made possible through registration fees, shirt and poster sales, and other fund-raising efforts. With the support of thousands of classic and custom automobile fans, many local businesses, local service groups and volunteers – and with hundreds of cruisers from near and far – the 2016 Function May 30, 2015 4 Junction promises to be another memorable day! he Function 4 Junction is a non-profit organization that not only runs a great car show but also raises money which is used “4 the Children, 4 the Schools, and 4 the Community”. Every year we make donations to local charities and work with the Education Together Foundation to provide scholarships and educational grants to students from Junction City. Over the years the F4J has made regular donations to the Junction City Tiger Auction, Tri-County Chamber of Commerce, Viking Sal Senior Center, Bethel Booster Club, local sports teams and our local Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs. Those donations are possible only because so many people offer their help in so many ways. All of the wonderfully supportive people who live and work in our small town of Junction City deserve the most recognition for the way they deal with the inconvenience of street closures and the dawn-to-dusk presence of as many as 15,000 visitors with a great amount of patience and very few complaints.

The business community throughout the southern Willamette Valley supports the event when they place an advertisement in this magazine. Some businesses trade goods or services for advertising space, which helps keep down our costs of staging the Show and the Cruise. The F4J directors want to thank those sponsors, along with all of the great people who buy raffle tickets that help fund everything we do. The downtown business owners of US Bank, Citizens Bank, Oregon Neurosport Physical Therapy, Pacific Continental Bank and Tri-County Insurance all donate the use of their parking lots. Bi-Mart also sets aside 38 of their parking spaces for our volunteers to use, while Dari-Mart allows us to use their beautifully landscaped parking lot as a backdrop when we photograph the Show ‘N Shine award winners. About a dozen riders from the Oregon High School Equestrian Team help out every year with Cruise and Show registration. The Tiger cheer squad, Tiger football players and members of the Veneta/Elmira 4H club are a big help with the demanding job of controlling the cruise route. The regional chapter of the Girl Scouts fields a team of Scouts and volunteers who join in the hard, unglamourus, late-night and early morning task of cleaning the streets and sidewalks after all the cruisers have gone home. Three board members and two other volunteers also take on the crucial and challenging task of judging vehicles in each of the 30 categories of awards and trying to choose a winner from an abundance of deserving entries. F4J President Dan Alley said that no single volunteer or group stands out, as they are all willing to jump in and help wherever needed. He pointed out that all of the board members are also volunteers who do an outstanding job on the committees they run. “Without them we wouldn’t be where we’re at today,” he said. “It’s the board members who put this all together.”

Dennis Huntley brought his picture-perfect, highperformance 1960 Corvette to the 2015 show and took home the top award

he Chevrolet Corvette convertible is one of the all-time, iconic, American-made automobiles. It has a distinct body style that helps the car look fast even when parked, and most ‘Vettes tend to go pretty fast when given an open road. Dennis Huntley of Thurston Hills learned that truth about Corvettes at an early age and knows it full well today. “I’ve owned ‘Vettes ever since I got a ‘57 when I was 18,” Dennis said. “I’ve always had one. I like altered Corvettes, so that’s how I build them. You have to build a package.” “I tell people that I build them now ‘...like I woulda when I was a kid, if I coulda’...”

some serious competition. There are no extra points awarded for entering local cars in the show, but this particular car does have some deep local roots. Dennis found it and acquired it back in 2002, but it was in this area long before that. “The car originally was an old white Corvette that came from a grass seed farmer off of River Road near Junction City,” said Dennis. “It was sitting in the office of a big metal barn next to a desk and TV, with critters living in it. I took it home, tore it apart and started reworking a lot of broken fiberglass.” “The car has a Jim Myers Racing front end,” he said. “The 383 cubic-inch

“In August of 2006, I was attending a show at the Shedd Cafe. A differentlooking car caught my eye; at first I thought it was an older Chrysler. On close examination it turned out to be a ‘37 Plymouth Business Coupe that the owner had brought from Sweet Home.” “It had a Buick 3.8 V-6 engine and a GM 400-R4 transmission. It has a one-piece welded steel body so no fenders can come off, making an engine swap more difficult. The gaps are filled and additional lines have been created, giving the car a smooth, sinister look. It’s a piece of artwork with a sense of depth that is hard to quantify.” continued on page

“The headlights are mounted in the fenders and blended in. The license plate revolves and can be hidden. An art deco, stylized sailing ship has been hand-filed into the body above the rear window with a red lens for an additional stop light. This fits in well with the art deco sailing ship hood ornament. The interior is gray tweed upholstery on the original seats.” “The car seemed to cry out for a high-quality remake. A small-block Hemi seemed to be a perfect upgrade. I was living in Gig Harbor, WA at the time and found a complete 1952 DeSoto 276 small block on a pallet at the Corvette/performance car swap meet in Puyallup.” “I chose Green Enterprises in Kent to do the engine rebuild and installation because Bill Green is an authority on Hemi engines. The engine was blueprinted and rebuilt with a mild cam and 4-barrel Holley carburetor.” Bob picked up a ‘82 Buick Regal to provide some donor parts as he continued to renovate and reshape the Coupe into his own unique design. “A 727 Torqueflight transmission was added along with an 8-inch Ford rear end and a 4-link,” he said. “A new firewall was added along with new floor boards. The dash board was painstakingly modified with new vents and all new classic instruments.”

F4J president Dan Alley explains his choice: “I look for something out of the ordinary. I look for sleek body lines and lines that you don’t see very often. With this car, I liked the way the roof rolls up and over with the little window in the back, and the fins that stick out of the side of the hood with the name written on it. There’s also the top of the grill and how the headlights are set way out from the fenders that give it a different look.” “This was the first time I’ve seen this car. As I was walking up and down and around the Show, it really jumped out at me. The fact that it was totally finished plus the shine and gleam it had made it stand out compared to several other cars I was considering.”

Bob moved to Yachats a few years ago and brought the Coupe with him. It was handed over to the fellows at MetalWorks Classics in Eugene for some additions such as fuel injectors and a few final special touches. “After the rebuild I realized the car

needed a name,” Bob said. “Looking at the revolving license plate and other features, I realized the car was close to being a stylized moonshine runner. Those cars only came out at night, so ‘Dracula’ was the perfect name and provided a sense of identity to the car.” “I contacted Chris Crank, a car artist, who looked at the coupe and said, ‘Just listen to me, I have an idea how to do this.’ His beautiful design was perfect for the car hood, and now the car shares an identity with a piece of 120-year old mythology.”

This coupe is so finely finished that it has won 28 awards in the 30 shows it’s been entered in so far, including Best of Show at the Oregon State Prison Car & Bike Show in Salem last year. The final painting by Kevin Harding (silver and black with red pinstriping, all true new Ford colors) and interior work by the father-son team of Jamie and Jason Jenniches (three shades of light grey with red stitching) was completed in 2015 just two days before they loaded the car up and rolled down to Redding, CA for Kool April Nights. They came home from that show with the Nostalgia Pick. “It was in fair shape when we first saw

it but it was painted solid black,” Joe said. “My friend Bob Wood and I spent five days a week for six months over the course of two summers working on the car. This car wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for him; I just was the helper on most of it. His wife even knitted about 18 little sweaters for the Greyhound

hood ornament.” “We started by rebuilding the entire front end and changing the electrical system from 6 volt to 12 volt. We found a guy who has a parts store in the middle of nowhere near Silverton who had a 1940 steering gearbox that we bought and rebuilt.” When Joe and Sherri first brought the car home it had 1948 continued on page

wheels in a different shade of red. After changing that color to a more traditional fire-engine red, Joe then found some ‘35 Spyder hubcaps and chrome rings to go with a set of ribbed and chromed hot rod rings and Coker whitewall tires. Their strong record of success at winning hardware at shows with the Ford is a little surprising as the Davis’s are fairly new to auto restoration as a hobby. “We used to ride Harleys and rebuild them to suit ourselves,” Joe said. “About five years ago I started having trouble with my balance, and four wheels became much easier to drive than two, so we started restoring classic autos in a small shop behind our house.” The coupe has interesting features that were a bit unusual even during the 30’s era of car design. The rear window

actually rolls all the down while the front windshield cranks open just a bit – and, of course, it has a rumble seat. In order to display the engine better Joe removed the side panels along the front compartment. He then designed his own tie-down strap system to keep the hood secure while allowing a good look at the motor. The coupe isn’t his first rebuild and won’t be his last one, either. He began with the restoration of a 1972 Chevy pickup that he painted in sea foam and white, but Joe has far more ambitious project car for this year – he’s working on an allstock 1954 Crestline Victoria 2-door hardtop painted in cameo coral and sandstone white. With the Davis’ attention to detail and to the small, fine touches – plus Bob Wood’s expertise – they are sure to have another high-quality classic in the garage when it’s finished.

Every car holds a story for the builder to tell, while often the car reflects the story of the builder and the passion that poured into building the car. In 2010, Kenn Hawes and his father, Rich, were living in Tahoe, CA and reeling from the grief of losing two beloved family members in a short period of time. The two men began to build out a project car, working together as a form of therapy,

using a 1935 Plymouth Coupe they had acquired decades before as a starting point. The result of their efforts over the next few years was a truly unique vehicle that received the most votes from more than 400 entries to win the People’s Choice award at the Function 4 Junction in 2015. “The ‘35 is a model year all by itself, it’s very different from ‘34 or from the years that followed,” said Kenn, who has been in the car and truck business all his life. “Going beyond that, our car is highly modified. The car’s interior detail work is immaculate and the exterior detailing is nearly perfect. It has features that only certain cars can offer, like a windshield that cranks open and deep, wide running boards you could stand on and ride at town speeds. And, as Kenn describes it, the car is clearly a custom job from front grill to rear bumper. “From the firewall forward the metal is from a‘37 Ford pickup, including the original fenders, grill, badge and headlights,” said Kenn. “It sits on a Mustang II front end and has a Chevy 350 QuadraJet engine. So right there you have Ford, Chevy and Plymouth parts.” Kenn and Rich will be back at the Function this year, but they won’t bring their current project, a 1937 Plymouth pickup truck, because it won’t be ready. As usual for the Hawes, it’s being built to suit their particular, award-winning taste in custom cars based on a classic style. They will, however, bring back the coupe, so we all get a second look at a car that is truly like no other... The woodgrain-on-steel dashboard and window trim pieces all were handpainted by Eric Tapley, a lifelong friend of the Hawes and owner of Harry’s Auto Signs in California.

The crowd-pleasing annual downtown car show added to its traditions in 2015

aturday, May 30 in 2015 was a fine spring day in typical Oregon style – cool and cloudy in the morning, sunny and warm all afternoon. That excellent weather and a growing reputation for a great classic car show and cruise brought a record number of entries to the Functon 4 Junction Show ‘N Shine last year. There’s probably no other show in the Northwest where viewers have all of a downtown district to stroll at their leisure while they enjoy a close-up look at a such a large number and wide range of automobiles. The people who came out 2015 saw more than 435 classic and custom cars, ratrods, pickup trucks and specialty vehicles on display, spread out over an area that covered six city blocks

long and two blocks wide. From muscle cars of the 1970’s going back to vehicles built more than a century ago, there were automobiles in every category imaginable – including more than a few that belong in a class all their own. As always, the tree-lined streets of Junction City kept things shady and cool while shops and vendors offered food and drink to the folks who strolled by. Veteran crowd-watchers estimated that once again more than 10,000 car enthusiasts walked through the show during the day-long event. A half-dozen photographers documented every car in the show while a drone buzzed around overhead, providing an aerial view of of the entire venue for the first time...

ore than a half-century ago in small towns all across America, on a warm early evening in the springtime you would see local folks out cruising Main Street in the family automobile. The younger crowd would rumble around in hot rods and roadsters while dozens of other residents sat near the street and watched, waved hello to neighbors and chatted with whoever dropped by. It was a time when television only offered three channels, a computer took up an entire building and telephones were always attached to a wall. For free entertainment dozens of people got into their cars, went cruising and hung out together downtown. They still do all of that in Junction City for one evening every year, only they do it by the hundreds. More than 800 cars were registered in 2015 to cruise the four lanes of Hwy. 99 that run through the center of town with loops through the business district at either end of the closed course. Or at least it does when you’re Jerry Szerlip... by Rob Lafferty

ome people have a natural-born talent for building things. Most of those folks use their skill in pursuit of a career while others use it to enjoy their hobby, to pursue their passion. Jerry Szerlip is one of those fellows who tends to seek joy and meaning before profit when doing stuff he loves to do. Working together with his wife, B.J. Bennett, Jerry created a sweet little homestead they call Old Tower Grove, just off

of River Road in Junction City. The house and outbuildings look as if they’ve been in place for half a century but all were built – or rebuilt – during the past two decades. Jerry had his hands deep into all of that carpentry and construction, and his skills show when you climb the angled stairs of their unique Tower guest quarters. His talent is most evident, however, when you walk into his garage and take a good look at the 1946 Packard Clipper Limousine that he’s restored into better-than-new condition using all original parts. According to Jerry, this story should be all about his car and nothing about him, but it must at least be

said that he managed an auto body shop in Southern California in his younger years where he once painted a car for John Wayne, and is a past president of the Emerald Empire Vintage Auto Club here in Oregon. He’s also kind of a genius when it comes to problemsolving in general. When Jerry first found the Packard it was a former funeral home limo that had been stored in Mar Vista for nearly 30 years after suffering an electric fire. He bought it and stored it for two decades more before starting the restoration in

2010 with the intent of making the car a driver rather than just a show piece. Jerry did a full body-off restoration and he’s logged a few hundered miles on it since it was completed. At a friend’s suggestion he chose a Classic Car Club of America event that offered a very high level of judging as the first place to show it. “I’d never entered a 100-point show before so I got the 23-page rulebook and started reading. As it turned out, taking the Packard to show level didn’t require too much more work.”

That’s easy for him to say, but it’s only true because of the attention to detail that Jerry brought to the project from the start. It’s also true because what looks like a major amount of work to most people just looks like another project to Jerry. The chromework on the Packard is one example. continued on next page

“Each door has 18 pieces of chrome,” he said. “All told there are 181 trim pieces on the car that I removed, re-chromed and then reinstalled – using the correct screws, of course.” Jerry and his crew finished the Packard on a Thursday night, trailered it up to Forest Grove on Friday and showed it the next day. It scored 98.75 points and won the CCCA Primary Division award. Gabby Lund of Emerald Auto Upholstery is responsible for the fine, tight carpet and upholstery work. The seat covers are leather and naugahyde in front, just as in the original, while the rear section is covered with a rich, deep blue fabric. The color is difficult to describe – there’s a density and depth in the Coral Metallic Blue paint that makes it look almost black in certain lighting. The quality is of the finest kind, producing a mirror

The powerful 356 cu.in. straight-eight engine is almost whisper-quiet, thanks in part to nine main bearings and a double-counterweighted crankshaft. Lever-hydraulic front shocks make the car very smooth to ride in, especially when rolling at highway speeds. It’s a big, roomy car inside that looks even larger when standing at curbside. “The car stands tall,” Jerry said. “It rides almost as high as a modern SUV or big pickup.” A compelling feature of the Clipper is that it’s pretty much a one-of-a-kind automobile today. Packard only manufactured 3,011 of the long wheelbase Clipper model while only about 300 of those were sold as formal limousines. But you might see one rolling the roads around Junction City on a nice summer day. If you do, remember that the fellow behind the wheel isn’t a limo driver – he’s the builder...

Every year a small crew of visual artists take their cameras out into the Show ‘N Shine and along the Cruise. They come back with the heart and soul of this magazine. We asked some of them to choose their favorite photo and tell us why...

or me, the Function 4 Junction cruise is about more than great classic cars. It’s about a single day when the city overflows with people of all types, styles, and ages; gathered together enjoying a summer evening. Skirts and T-shirts. Beards and tattoos. Old men and kids. Some stand and watch. Others do a slow stroll down the sidewalk littered with families sitting on beach chairs and curbs. It’s a bumper-to-bumper art show cruising through the business district in a festival of pure Americana. And yes, it’s about the cars for sure. Bright colors, classic forms, beautiful restorations, and creative (sometimes outrageous) one-of-a-kinds all driven by proud owners with their friends and families in a celebratory mood. That’s why this photo was one of my favorites from the hundreds I shot last

year. It encompasses everything I love in one story-telling image. I shot it in the early evening when the soft light tames detail-hiding shadows; yet is still directional enough to highlight the couple standing on the right. And it has all the elements of design that make a compelling image. The strong diagonal lines formed by the street leads the viewer’s eyes up through the photo; stopped by the tree branches at the top of the frame and pulled down by the side-lit couple in the foreground. As we inevitably follow their eyes looking back towards the street we notice the diverse collection

of spectators in chairs on the sidewalk; and then our eyes travel back up the diagonal again as they continue moving in a circle, round and round the image. And each time they go round we notice something new. In events like this there is always a danger of so much information that the eye can be overwhelmed and leave. But the bare gray surface of the street and the couple on the right act as anchors where the eye can rest. To experience this effect for yourself, block out the right side of the photo and you’ll see what a difference their presence makes.

his is one of my favorite hood ornaments, and was my favorite photo that I shot at the 2015 Function 4 Junction show. The picture reflects the grace and class of the pre-World War II hood decorations as well as the cars themselves. Our Flying Lady shows simplified elegance as she leads this lucky owner down the road, almost as if floating in air. Photographically, I am struck by the stark contrast of bright chrome and the softness of the flying goddess. With her head held up proudly, and her hair blowing in the wind, can there be a better representation of the power and sophistication that was the 1940’s Cadillac? She was shot with a Canon 7D, using a macro 2.8, 100mm Canon “L” lens.

rystal Freeman is on the F4J Board; she and her husband, Nate, are excellent photographers and owners of Willow Creek Creative, an interactive web design firm. Every year they each take a hundred photos or more then upload all of them in one batch. We never know who took which shot, so we always try to credit them both. We know that Nate took this photo of stylized flames because Crystal said so when she chose it as her favorite. To keep it fair, we chose as well her self-portrait reflection in the mirror finish of a truck tailgate.

Shoot ‘em all and let an editor sort ‘em out...

ill Haney lives in Cheshire, but he spends a lot of his time in Junction City or nearby towns, usually in places where automobiles have gathered. Like an avid birdwatcher, Bill will be there with his cameras and long lenses, always ready to take five hundred photos and then upload every one for us to choose from. He’s at his best when photographing sports events, but he doesn’t discriminate – he’ll shoot just about anyone doing anything, anywhere, in any conditions. Bill chose the photo at left because of the threedimensional illusion created by a masterful bit of painting. To us, this photo shows his attention to detail and his eye for the small touches that make for great photographs.

Local DJ provides the sound track for the Function every year

hether you’re srolling around at a car show or rolling around in a car cruise, the right kind of music needs to be playing to make the experience complete. Andy Manuel plays exactly the kind of oldies that set the right tone for a day of car watching and cruising. That would be, of course, music from the ‘50s and ‘60s, with a few ‘70s tunes thrown in. Andy is a DJ for KOOL FM – 99.1 on your radio dial – and has been the announcer and musical director at the Show ‘N Shine and the Cruise for nearly a decade now. “It’s a whole lot of fun to do both events,” Andy said. “ I enjoy watching the families and kids dancing on the sidewalks or in an open car or the bed of a truck. It does make for a very

long, 15-hour day, but I have my grandson Troy to help now. He’s my muscle for moving equipment from the center of the Show up to the Cruise route. He might become a DJ in the future and he likes the music we play at the Function as much as I do.” Andy now has a trailer built just for him and his equipment. He uses the speaker system installed for the ScandiFest during the Show but switches to big, full-range speakers when spinning tunes for the Cruise. He keeps the air filled with the best sounds to accompany the parade of automobiles that cruise his booth all evening long. So when you come to the F4J this year, be sure to let Andy know how much you like the atmosphere he provides...

The Truck Function Show & Cruise continues to be one of the most unique events in the state. The 2015 Function brought out dozens of big rigs and antique trucks for a show at JC High School followed by a closedcourse cruise through the center of Junction City. In 2016 the Truck Function will be held on Saturday, July 16.

On Oct. 1, 2015 at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, a gunman on a shooting rampage killed nine people and wounded nine others. Everyone connected to the Function4Junction was impacted by this senseless tragedy. The victims were our neighbors; some were friends, or friends of people we know. “Hey, Bud - Mom and Dad got your truck back!” When Matt Hansen was 12 years old he wanted a 1956 Ford F-100 pickup truck. He and his father, Gary, found a yellow one in Portland, brought it home to Cheshire and worked on it over the next five years.

When the truck was finished Matt was more interested in a 4-wheel sand machine than a classic pickup, so Gary sold the truck to Florence Auto Body in 1996. Ten years later, on their way to pick up a ‘53 Chevy BelAir from Myron Aho in Florence, Matt asked Gary if they could go and try to get that ‘56 Ford back. But after loading the BelAir Myron showed them his new project car and they

couldn’t believe what they saw it was Matt’s old truck! Soon after that day Matt was diagnosed with brain cancer. Over the next few years, Matt returned to the Florence show every year and told everyone that some day he would get that truck back. But his time on Earth ran out first; Matt passed away in 2013. The following year when Myron decided to sell the truck, Gary and his wife Kaye didn’t hesitate; the truck has now come full circle 24 years after Matt first saw it...

Herb Nill

In March of this year the Junction City community heard the sad news of the passing of Herb Nill at age 87. Herb purchased Guaranty Chevrolet in 1966 and built the dealership up before expanding into truck sales and RV sales and service. His family-owned and operated businesses are now the cornerstone employers of the nearby area. The Nill family has supported the F4J from the beginning, and Guaranty Chevrolet remains a primary sponsor today. Our feelings about Herb are perhaps best expressed in these words from his biography: “Herb’s love of family, dear friends, and the entire community was evident in his words and actions. He lived a life full of gratitude to be shared with everyone he encountered.” And he will be missed by all...

The F4J Board of Directors want to recognize the passing of Dennis Bendickson last fall and offer their condolences to his family and friends. A Junction City resident, Dennis was also a long-time volunteer with the F4J who could often be found helping direct traffic to the registration area.
