runction 4 Junction is a day-long auto Show ‘N Shine that celebrates the craft of auto restoration followed by an evening Cruise to showcase those automobiles and many more. Guests have a chance to talk with people who know a lot about classic and custom cars, have some fun and do some good things for the local community. The F4J has evolved from the River Road Show & Shine organized in the ‘90s by Graffiti Alley owner Bob White and a cruise which followed that show for more than a decade. The show became known as the Function In Junction before it moved to the football field at Junction City High. It soon outgrew that space. After being reorganized as the non-profit Function 4 Junction to manage the growing event, the show relocated to the side streets of downtown. By then the evening cruise had already taken over Ivy Street, the main drag through town. As many as 10,000 people show up each year to get a close look at more than 400 parked classic and custom

cars. More people come in to watch as perhaps 600 cruisers roll around town into the evening. It’s become the second-largest event held in Junction City and one of the most popular car shows held anywhere in Oregon.
On a Friday evening in 2018, the first open Cruise with newer car models began motoring up and down the streets of Junction City. The Show ‘N Shine still goes on all day Saturday in the heart of town with awards presented in the afternoon, but then things change as everyone gets ready
for the evening event. Whole families of spectators start to line both sides of Ivy Street as they get ready for vintage models from dozens of car makers to start cruising up and down the streets of town until darkness falls. None of that happened in 2020 as the global pandemic prohibited large gatherings in public. The F4J board of directors wisely chose to cancel the event instead of trying to modify it to fit ever-changing regulations. By the time May arrived last year, many restrictions had been removed. That’s the case again this year – life in downtown Junction City is back closer to normal, so the Show ‘N Shine and evening Cruises are ready to roll. With incredible support from classic car fans and dozens of local business owners, along with the efforts of community service groups and weeks of work from a small army of volunteers, the 2022 Function 4 Junction is ready to create another memorable weekend for everyone!
Live at the Show Local cover band Riffle will play a variety of rock, blues, R&B, country and pop hits at the Function 4 Junction on Sat. June 4, from 1-2:30pm near the corner of 5th Ave. and Greenwood St. After the awards presentation, they’ll come back to perform for another hour or so...
For over 37 years Riffle has been known as a band that has fun and puts on a great show!

Puttin ’ on the Show & Cruise There
simply would not be a Function 4 Junction without the small army of volunteers who handle every aspect of staging more than 400 cars into an allday Show on the streets of a small town – then adding a couple of hundred more classics and helping them cruise the town until dark. And with two Cruises to manage now, those folks are doing more work and investing more time than ever before. You see them all over the route during a cruise – the women and men, young and old, who control car and foot traffic, staff the barricades and keep everything flowing in the right direction. They donate their time to monitor parking areas and provide information to everyone after registering every vehicle for each event. The non-profit Function continues to grow every year, as does the need for more volunteers. Positions may be available on the board of directors for anyone willing to help with the planning that goes on during most of the year. F4J board members work with local groups to sell raffle tickets and distribute this magazine in the weeks before the Function.
They manage the crews who set Working at the everything up at the crack of Show or during a dawn and then clear the streets Cruise can be more after everyone has gone home. fun than being Local and regional businesses part of the crowd! help to cover the cost of events when they buy an ad or donate goods or services. Some downtown stores close up and take the day off to join the fun while others stay open, get real busy and have their best day of sales all year. It makes a successful day for everyone – the wide variety of cars in the Show, the 600+ autos that roll around town during the Cruises, and an estimated 10,000 visitors who come into town to watch. A special thanks goes out once again to Kathy Tourtillott of ODOT; Jennifer Paugh at Lane County; Junction City employees Gary Kaping and Kitty Vodrup; Brandon Nicole of the Fire Department and all Public Works crews. They make sure we comply with all the rules for an event of this size. The Junction City Police always keep the event safe for all, with special thanks this year to Chief Bob Morris. A variety of youth groups such as Girl Scout Troop #20315 help control the cruise route as well as doing the big job of cleaning up afterwards. US Bank, Oregon Neurosport Physical Therapy and Pacific Continental Bank all donate the use of their parking lots for showing cars. Citizens Bank and Hagen Hamilton Insurance offer space for Cruise announcers while Dari-Mart lets us use their headquarters to photograph the award winners. The list goes on and on. The people who live and work in our small town deserve the most recognition. Local residents seldom complain about the inconvenience of street closures and they exhibit great patience over the dawn-to-dusk presence of so many visitors. Without their support the F4J would be a much smaller event and nowhere near as much fun for everyone...

Every year at least a few folks add to the Show by arriving dressed in a variety of very cool period costumes, but 2021 marked the first year an official Costume Contest was held. You don’t need to have a car in the show to enter the contest or to win a prize. You do, however, need to sign up at the registration booth near the clock tower downtown at the heart of the Show. Be sure to register before 2pm, as the judging begins at 2:30 at the announcer’s booth across from the clock. So dress up and get ready to pose for dozens of photographers all day long!

What’s New in Junction City?
12 by Margaret Foster
What’s new in Junction City? Growth and change. There’ve been new businesses opening up all over town in the last year. Here’s a highlight of just a few of them: Celtic Storage is located on Elm St. behind Bi Mart. Jason and Keri Flores started Celtic Storage in Keizer in 2018, and the Junction City location will open around mid-May this year. They offer short-term and long-term storage units in a variety of sizes, plus moving supplies at affordable prices. For information on their storage units or services, please call Jason or Keri at 971-273-0565 or email to office@ celticstorage.com. Competition Auto Sales is located on Hwy 99 just south of 1st Ave. Jake Fisher moved his business from Eugene to Junction City about 18 months ago. He specializes in diesel pick-up trucks and he buys, sells or locates vehicles for his customers.
Junction City Point S Tire & Auto Service is on Hwy 99 at the corner of West 12th Ave. Kolby and Tia Clay both grew up in Junction City and opened this family owned and operated business on Sept. 21, 2021. They service tires and perform light auto repairs such as oil changes, alignments, breaks and installing lifts and steps on vehicles. Ministry Construction can be found on Hwy 99 just south of 1st Ave. Rob Adams actually has three businesses in that one location – Ministry Construction, Devine Gutters and Noti Cabinets. With Ministry Construction, Rob is a general contractor who handles big and small projects and handyman work. Devine Gutters can handle all home gutter repairs or replacement. Noti Cabinets build custom cabinets without the custom price. Rob also sources his materials locally. Oregon Community Credit Union has moved up to the north end of town into the shopping center at the junction of Hwy 99E and Hwy 99W. This new office will be open in midMay of this year and offer all the services a traditional bank usually offers.

Never
in the 25-year history of the Function 4 Junction had all events been cancelled, but the onset of a pandemic made 2020 become that first time. A Show ‘N Shine and Cruise in 2021 wasn’t certain until the first week of spring, which left little time to plan and organize, both for the people putting on the Show as well as the folks who planned to compete in it. An early morning rain shower added to the scramble for contestants who were preparing for the judges to come around, but the customary crowd of perhaps 10,000 visitors missed any wet weather and enjoyed a cool spring day with plenty of sunshine.
photo by Jen Blue Once again more than 400 classic and custom automobiles were on display, and guests could get a free, up-close and personal look at every vehicle in the wildly diverse assembly. A quarter-mile of Greenwood Street and a block or two of every cross street were lined with cars of nearly every make or model imaginable. Dozens of entirely unique custom builds and rat rods were on display. Showgoers could talk with the owner or builder of almost any car to learn about its creation or restoration. They could take close-up photos or even make an bid on some of the cars offered for sale.

story & photos by Helen M. Davis
For Al Wilson, it has been a nearly life-long love affair. Back when he was 18 and drove a restored convertible roadster down the roads of Southern California, he knew hot rods were something special. Later, life got in the way and any pursuit of a roadster was deferred in favor of work and raising a family. But the need for speed never left and in the late 1990’s, Al acquired a 1930 Model A that he intended to dismantle. He soon concluded that the car was “too perfect” and he “didn’t want to screw it up.” After he repaired the wiring and got the old car running, he took it out for a drive. As luck would have it, he ran out of gas just down the road from his home in Elmira. While stalled, another man stopped to offer help and wound up buying the car from Wilson, which allowed him to buy the body of a 1929 Model A Roadster in Grants Pass that would
become the hot rod of his dreams. To bring this transformation about took Wilson 17 years. A rolling ‘29 chassis was purchased as were new running boards and a trunk lid. The battery is now located in the trunk, as there was no room left in the engine compartment after duel 8-gallon fuel tanks and a driveline were added. The hot rod also has independent suspension, custom heated leather seats made by Billet Automatic, a rumble seat, dual exhaust, and a removable top that doesn’t often get removed. Night rides are lit by a pair of motorcycle headlamps equipped with built-in turn signals, and the front end locks for “spinning and
playing.” Painted a shade of grandeur blue, the rod sports seventeen coats of paint and clear. Wilson himself didn’t know just how special the paint job is, despite multiple compliments about the “candy job” from passers-by while out and about in the car. rod doesn’t get taken out in inclement weather. They hit rain heading south, followed by hail in Grants Pass and then heavy snow in the Siskiyou Mountains. When they reached the summit, they had to pull over because
the only wiper in the vehicle is handoperated. In no time at all at least two inches of snow accumulated on the hood. Once they were able to resume driving and left the mountains, the Wilsons confronted more rain that was so heavy water was seeping in beneath the hot rod’s top. Of course, when one is on a road trip in a hot rod, one needs the appropriate music and Al keeps handy a Beach Boy’s CD full of cruising tunes such as “Fun, Fun, Fun.” However, it’s not quite so good, good, good, “...when you’ve heard
it at least 50 times,” as Peggy is quick to point out. The car sat idle for the past two years, but the Wilsons hope to change this, perhaps beginning with the Function 4 Junction. They’ve driven the Junction City cruise many times and they hope that with restrictions easing, this may be the year to bring the hot rod out to be enjoyed by a host of new admirers. It’s been a labor of love, this deep blue car that roars to life with the turn of a key and a push on the accelerator, and every bit of effort, every bit of expense, every bit of frustration has all been worth it. A dream that had to be pushed aside for so long now not only brings the Wilsons such pleasure, but brings pleasure to so many others as well.

It’s one of those incredibly clean cars
where a casual observer is reluctant to touch the doors and even less willing to open them and actually sit on the upholstery while wearing street clothes and shoes. Kan & Kristina Rogers of Creswell own the car chosen last year by our team of judges as the one vehicle
that stood out above all the rest. Kan offered a short description of features the judges certainly noticed: “This was a long-term, frame-off custom build. The chassis was stripped and powder coated gloss black. The car rides on air ride suspension, Wilwood 6-piston front and 4-piston rear disc brakes, one-off custom 20”
Modulare forged 3-piece wheels and Bridgestone Potenza low profile tires.” “The exterior is finished in Candy Apple Black featuring front and rear glass trim complete with shaved accents including drip rails, side view mirrors, door handles and cowl panel. The front of the vehicle is equipped with a handmade custom grill and Dapper Lighting HID halo headlights,” he said. continued on pg 37

1957 Ford Thunderbird Convertible Cindy Harris with Gypsi
Cindy Harris owns a car that looks
as if it was pulled out of time when it was still brand new and then dropped back into the world 65 years later – and that’s almost the true history of last year’s coveted People’s Choice Award winner. The original Thunderbird designers created one of the truly iconic
American-made vehicles recognized by just about everyone, everywhere. Cindy’s T-Bird is impeccable inside and out, so it’s no surprise at all it turned out to be the most popular car in the 2021 Show ‘N Shine. It’s also an Oregon car, having stayed in the state from its first arrival on July 2, 1957. The manager of a Eugene Ford

dealership purchased the T-Bird for his wife. It clear;y wasn’t driven much, as it came back to the dealership in October of 1986 with just 33,000 miles on the speedometer. That’s when Cindy first saw the car, because that’s when her father became its second owner. He drove it even less than the first owner. Aside from taking it to a few shows, where Cindy says he never came away with less than a second place award, her dad mainly kept it stored and covered in Springfield over the next 35 years. During all that time, only 900 miles were added onto the speedometer. continued on pg 40

That’s why the T-Bird is in original condition today, except for the radio, which was stolen long ago but has been replaced. It has both a soft top and the hard tonneau top shown here. Cindy convinced her dad to sell her the car just last year in April. She
didn’t drive it much, either, at least not right away. The longest trip prior to last year’s F4J was actually the drive from Springfield to Junction City for the Show. Friends had advised her to bring the car up to town and enter the Show ‘N Shine. It was the first time
attending the Function for Cindy and her husband, Frank, and both were surprised to win an award. There was no preparation done to show it, aside from wash and polish and filling the tank. They stayed for the Cruise that Saturday evening because they were having so much fun with all the folks

they met who wanted to know the T-Bird’s story. A few months later Cindy was out cruising when the speedometer rolled all the way over to 34,000 miles. It’s over in Lincoln City today where they live now. She’s been asked to sell it more than once, and even had one fellow pull out his checkbook and ask what amount he should write a check for. The car just isn’t for sale, Cindy insists, as she intends to give it to her adult daughters someday in the future – just not anytime soon. You might get another chance to see this truly special automobile this year at the show, as Cindy and Frank expect to return to Junction City with the Thunderbird. The People may well choose to honor it once again.

1964 Ford Thunderbird Coupe ~ Dennis & Pam Fiske
photos by Jamie Hooper

here are people living in Junction City who remember when this 1964 Ford Thunderbird Coupe first arrived on the showroom floor at Gibson Motors 58 years ago. Others remember it from later years as a display car sitting on the showroom floor. Pam and Dennis Fiske remembered this classic – and they had a chance to bring it back to town. “We purchased the Thunderbird in 2018 from Scott Knox, a childhood friend and the son of Frank and Bess Knox, owners of the old Gibson Motors in town,” Pam tells us. “Scott’s relatives, Gayle and Carey continued on pg 48

Strome, bought the car new from Gibson. They traded it back later, then it had one other owner before it made its way back to Gibson. “When the business closed in 2008, Scott bought the car and took it to Ashland, where he kept it stored and took it to a few shows. My dad, Bud Carpenter, worked at Gibson Motors for 37 years, and I always saw the car sitting under a cover there. Scott was excited when he learned that we wanted to return the car to where it came from.” “The T-Bird is a 2-door hardtop coupe, with a 390 V8 automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes, swing-away steering wheel, power seat and dual side mirrors with remote control,” Pam said. “It has just over 46,000 original miles, is in mint condition and has been well cared for – it runs and drives great.” Our editor, Scott McKinley, remembers the Fiske family and their T-Bird rather well, as he was a classmate of Pam and saw the coupe on a regular basis for years. “I’ve known of this car since 1972 or earlier, but the people connected to it I thought was also interesting,” said Scott. “Gibson Motor Co. was started by Angus Gibson in the 1920’s. Scott Knox is the grandson of Angus Gibson. The Stromes were his great-aunt and great-uncle. On a side note, Carey Strome was the mayor of Junction City at one time. “The connection to Scott, Pam and myself is the fact that the three of us lived just houses apart on Prairie Road, started school together in first grade and graduated from Junction City High School, class of 1974. It’s amazing how this car’s history connects with so many people from this area,” Scott said. “So congratulations to Pam and Dennis Fiske and their 1964 Thunderbird, for being the 2021 Editor’s Choice winner.”

Gone , yet never to be forgotten ...

We lost more than a few members of the classic and custom car community over the past year, including two long-time local automotive professionals – Ken Jamieson, Sr. and Sam Steinhauer. Both men are gone but the business each man started remains in their family and continues operating today.
Ken Jamieson came to town in 1971 and opened Junction City Muffler Shop in an old A-frame building just south of town. June 1, 2022 will mark 51 years of JC Muffler having its doors open for business in that location. Ken’s life-long passion for racing came from the Southern California desert racing scene, which he got into with his brothers in 1955. He also went racing with the Lost Angels motorcycle club against other clubs across the country. After crashing a motorcycle and shattering his ankle in five places, he switched over to racing four-wheeled speedsters instead, starting with a 1952 Buick. He made a living as a welder and opened his own shop, creating art from wrought iron and building fuel-efficient dual exhaust systems for custom racing machines. Ken Sr. met Mary, an Alabama beauty who agree to marry him, and their son Kenny was born during those years down south. As Kenny got older he did quite a bit of racing, mostly stock cars and sprint cars. In 2011, Kenny spoke of his parents in the F4J magazine, saying, “My dad is my hero. I’ve always wanted to follow in his footsteps and take over the shop. Mom keeps us all on the right track. She’s been a tremendous help for the business, all of the race teams, and for the Function 4 Junction.” Sam Steinhauer was known to most people in the local car community not just because he could diagnose a problem over the phone or repair their custom build or find parts to renovate an old classic. Sam is remembered by all of us because he was a kind and gentle person with everyone he met. He worked for 36 years at Gibson Ford in Junction City, starting as a lot boy at 16 and ending as the service department manager. When Gibson closed down in 2009, Sam quickly opened Steinhauer Automotive because former customers kept calling up to ask when and where he planned to start his own repair shop. Those customers were like family to Sam, he often said. His strong sense of family can be traced through 133 years of Steinhauers living on the same land in the Coast Range near Deadwood on
Ken Jamieson Sr. started Junction City Muffler Shop in 1971. Five decades later the shop remains open for business. Ken Sr. raced his last car when he was 71 years old, and died late last year at the age of 87. Kenny runs the shop now, walking in his dad’s footsteps every day. He passed his father’s legacy on to his children – son Mitchell and daughter Lacee both raced cage carts – marking the third generation of speed racers in the Jamison family. Kenny said, “The F4J is my favorite night of the year. I love that night so much that I lose sleep the night before! I love Junction City. I know everybody, and it’s such a good town for raising kids that I can’t imagine living anywhere else.” land recognized by the state as a Century Farm. Jadine is Sam’s wife and she’s kept the shop open despite the difficulty of doing so without him. She said that she’s been able to do that because of what she learned from Sam’s vast knowledge of cars which came from his lifetime of working on and around automobiles of every make and model. He collected a few very fine classics himself, like the red Model A that sits inside the shop and the ‘55 Chevy that Jadine calls “Sam’s signature car” because he’s always owned one since he was 15 years old. There’s also an unfinished 1922 Ford Model T project at home, the same model as the car shown in all their advertising. Sam won’t be at the Function this year in person, but his presence will be all over and memories will be shared among those who knew him.

F4J board members get real busy during the weeks before the Function every year, so they rarely get to show their own cars or join the cruise. Here’s a quick look at a few of those folks and their rides.

“The grey Dodge is my husband Mike’s daily, a 2012 Ram 3500. It’s one of our work horses used to tow our toy hauler or kids! “The 1970 Chevelle we call ‘Trudy’ is our summer cruiser. We adopted her about 4 1/2 years ago with 43k original miles. She enjoys long cruises to places like Reno for Hot August Nights or Tacoma for Wings and Rides. The kiddos enjoy taking Trudy to get ice cream on summer nights. “The green Dually is Sarah’s daily, also a 2012 Ram 3500 named ‘Fancy’. It took Sarah several years to find the truck, patiently waiting for the right one. “Owning South Valley Auto here in Junction City is a large part of what brought us to be involved with F4J, but the biggest motivator was growing up attending the event as a kid. Lots of memories watching the classics take over our town and seeing so many different folks flood our streets to enjoy the past. Having the opportunity to give back and doing our part to keep this event happening is a huge honor for us.” ~ Sarah Fay

After looking for a few months we brought her home in September, 2018 from Washington. “We started working on her right away and had her on the road in about two months. We do a little work each year to upgrade her. I love driving her as often as I can.” ~ Mischele Rue

story and photos by Jim Foster
I got my first car, a 1968 Ford Mustang, in September of 1976. And yes, I still have it after 45 years and 600,000 miles. After I got the car, I installed a Pioneer stereo which I bought before my car. I also installed dual exhaust with the turbo mufflers, which gave my car a classic sound. A friend and I installed a new Holly 600 carburetor, and I added Mag rims and air shocks. A little while later, my car got its name – DaBeest. For a detailed story of Jim’s car, look online at www.dabeest.com I kept up the mechanical since it was my transportation, but after 19 years of cosmetic neglect, it looked awful. Fortunately my future wife Margaret didn’t mind its appearance much. Gary and Joyce Compton: Then came a fateful day on my birthday in 2006 – “We bought our ACCIDENT! The damage to the back end of DaBeest 1965 Plymouth was so severe that the body shop would need to “back Belvedere in 2016 half ” the car. Adams and Mike Adams, two brothers who owned Top Flite Automotive in Junction City, have been hosting a regular Wednesday night Cruise-In for years. It’s a chance for people to bring their hotrods, park and visit with friends to talk about that one thing we all have in common – classic cars. I became involved with this group when my dad, Ron Larson, and I restored an F100 that he’s had since I was a kid. I started going to Top Flite every Wednesday night to join the cruise-ins. A short time after, Dave and Mike decided to retire and sell their business. Where are we to go? Abby’s Pizza in Junction City, for starters. They love having us. We started just as the Top Flite tradition started, Wednesday night cruise-ins with pizza and chicken, bring your chairs and sit with friends and family. Then it grew. It grew because we have so much fun! We plan cruises, we network, we plan lunches outta town. Lunch in Sisters. Lunch at Crescent Lake. Lunch in Cottage Grove. Wednesday nights at
Abby’s Pizza during the winter has become a regular thing. We also get together every Tuesday morning for Coffee & Lies; where we meet depends upon the time of year. We have a private Facebook page called the Topflight Cruisers, which is the name
we voted to call our little club. It’s a perfect place to network and organize get-togethers, and a tribute to Dave and Mike. We carry on their tradition...

It’s fun to walk through the Show and check out all the custom rides, but it’s a different kind of fun to watch unique vehicles cruisin’ the streets of a small town...

Best Truck Stock ~ 1949 Chevrolet 3100 Mary Corrington ~ Eugene
Mary Corrington bought her 1949 Chevy 3100 pickup in 2008 from a co-worker. It was his grandfather’s and Mary is just the second owner. “It was in rough condition and needed a complete overhaul. I went all-out and restored it myself. I’ve shown it three times at the Roadster Show (and won) and was Best in Show in Lebanon. I’ve won awards at the F4J in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2021.”

Best Interior 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Derek Dmochowsky, Eugene
We weren’t able to get any photos of Derek’s car at the show last year, so he sent these in with a short story of his car: “My dad bought the Chevelle in 1997 for he and I to work on together. It was a shell with a motor and parts. I hand-sanded it down to bare metal, but paint and body work credit goes to Jim Peters. The car was completed in 2018. My thanks go to Jim Valenzuela at V34 Custom Interiors for his
show-winning interior work. I also want to offer special thanks to my parents for assisting me, and to my wife and kids for being a part of this journey of restoring the Chevelle. Thank you to JD at Ntouch detailing for being Lane County’s premier detailer. He is the only one I trust to get my car show ready. There were many great cars at the Show ‘N Shine. I’m fortunate to have come away with the award for Best Interior.”
