Pre-registration is now available through May 13, 2017. After May 13, registration forms must be filled out on the day of the event - no exceptions. For the Friday evening Cruise, register at the Bi-Mart parking lot on 6th Avenue. Saturday registration is open from 8am until 7pm in downtown Junction City on Greenwood Street between 4th Avnue. and 5th Avenue. Drivers must be licensed and must present vehicle registration for proof of eligibility.

Eligibility:

In the Show ‘N Shine, all makes and models are invited! In the Friday evening Cruise, vehicles must be 1975 and newer. In the Saturday evening Cruise, vehicles must be 1974 and older. 4-wheel drive vehicles and motorcycles are not allowed in the Cruise.

Event Rules:

All local laws will be enforced. While cruising you must follow all traffic laws, including all traffic lights. No breaking traction, no hydraulics and no open exhaust during the Cruise is allowed. All passengers must remain seated. If any rules are violated, you are at risk of being kicked out of the cruise and may also be ticketed by law enforcement. No throwing of candy!

Welcome to the Function 4 Junction

he biggest car show in the MidWillamette Valley just got a whole lot bigger! This year will feature the first annual Friday Nite Cruise, a special event that a lot of folks have been asking us to put together. The process has taken a long time, but we’re finally ready to grow into a two-night event in 2017. The old format and times haven’t changed at all; we’re adding to event, not modifing it. As always, cars of any year, make or model are eligible to enter the Show ‘N Shine, our Saturday street show held in downtown Junction City. Also as usual, the Cruise that follows the Show ‘N Shine is restricted to any make or model of automobile from the year 1974 or older. And once again, no 4-wheel drive vehicles or motorcycles are allowed in the Cruise.

What’s new is the Friday evening Cruise, restricted to vehicles made from 1975 right up to today’s latest models. All the other Cruise rules apply; it will run from 6pm until 9:30pm, no breaking traction or burnouts, no hydraulics, no open exhaust allowed and all passengers must remain seated. We’re doing this for two reasons – there are a lot of car owners who want to cruise in their newer model rides, especially today’s younger car owners, and there are a lot of beautifully customized cars from the 80’s and 90’s that deserve to be seen in front of a crowd. So a new era in the history of the Function 4 Junction begins, bringing with it a new generation of automobile enthusiasts and one more night full of visitors to our quiet little town. ver the years, it’s been our hardworking volunteer crews who make the the Show ‘N Shine and Cruise possible. This year they will be doing more than ever. Volunteers control the flow of traffic and monitor all parking areas, they operate barricades, provide information to cruisers and guests and register every vehicle. Board members and volunteer groups sell raffle tickets and distribute this free magazine in the month before the Function; they set everything up on the morning of the

event; they judge the Show ‘N Shine entries and they even clean up the downtown streets afterwards. The local business community plays a huge part in making the event possible by advertising in this magazine and by contributing a wide range of goods and services that is too long to list here. Some close up shop and take the day off, while others stay busy and have their best single day of sales all year. The commitment of the business owners helps make the Function a safe, fun and successful day for everyone. special thanks goes out once again to Jeff Prociw of the state Transportation Dept.; Jennifer Paugh with Lane County Public Works; Junction City planner Jordan Cogburn; and the crew at the city’s Public Works department. They make sure we are in compliance with all rules involved in staging an event of this size. The Junction City Police Department has always supported the Function. A brief history of the Function 4 Junction

rom its beginning in 1995, the Function 4 Junction has been a celebration of the history of American automobiles. It also serves as a showcase for the challenging craft of auto restoration as well as an expression of the passion that many people feel towards their favorite make and model of classic car. But mostly it’s a chance to have some fun while taking in the scene, talking about cars and doing good things for the communityin the process. It started with a cruise up and down River Road south of town and an informal show in whatever empty field could be secured. Since 2006, both the Show ’N Shine and the Cruise have been held within the Junction City limits, using the main drag of our small Willamette Valley town as the cruise route in the early evening. The Show ‘N Shine has moved from the often-muddy high school football field to the paved streets at the center of town. As many as 15,000 people come every year to enjoy the day, watch the cruisers and inspect the show cars. It’s the second-largest event held in Junction City and it’s one of the most popular car shows in Oregon. The Show ‘N Shine goes on all day Saturday, centered at the corner of 6th Ave. and Greenwood St. in the heart of town. Awards are announced and presented around 3pm, and then everything changes as everyone gets ready for the main event – the Cruise! Spectators line both sides of Ivy Street, which is the city’s name for the four lanes of Hwy. 99 that run through the center of town. The Cruise traditionally begins at 6pm with two antique fire trucks leading the way. Automobiles of every make, model and vintage cruise up and down the main drag until darkness falls and the Cruise ends. And 2017 will mark the inaugural Friday evening Cruise as the Function keeps growing. With the support of thousands of classic and custom automobile fans, many local businesses, local service groups and volunteers – and with hundreds of cruisers from near and far – the 2017 Function 4 Junction promises to be another memorable day!

money – and expenses keep increasing each year – but as our motto states, all profits are allocated “4 the Children, 4 the Schools, and 4 the Community”. Every year the F4J directors work with the Education Together Foundation to provide scholarships and educational grants to students from Junction City. Over the past two decades the F4J has made regular contributions to the Junction City Tiger Auction, the Tri-County Chamber of Commerce, the Viking Sal Senior Center, the Bethel Booster Club, several local sports teams and local Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs. Those donations are possible because many people volunteer their help in so many ways. The supportive people who live and work in our small town of Junction City deserve the most recognition. They deal with the inconvenience of street closures and the dawn-todusk presence of as many as 15,000 visitors with great patience and very few complaints. Members of the business community support the event with their advertisement in this magazine. Other businesses trade goods and services for advertising, which keeps the costs of staging the events at manageable levels. The F4J directors want to thank every one of those sponsors, large and small, for their financial support. The owners of US Bank, Oregon Neurosport Physical Therapy and Pacific Continental Bank all donate the use of their parking lots for staging the Show ‘N Shine. Citizens Bank and Tri-County Insurance loan us their parking areas for the Cruise announcers. Bi-Mart also sets aside a big section of their lot for our volunteers to park in, while Dari-Mart

Each year, horses and riders from the Oregon High School Equestrian Team help out with Cruise and Show registration. The Tiger cheer squad, Tiger football players and members of the Veneta/Elmira 4H club all play a big role with the demanding job of controlling the cruise route. The regional chapter of the Girl Scouts fields a team of Scouts and other volunteers who join in the hard, unglamourus, late-night and early morning task of cleaning the streets and sidewalks, long after everyone else has gone home.

Delta Sand & Gravel of Eugene always loans us the use of an electronic reader board that is posted on the highway south of town several weeks in advance. Three board members and two other volunteers also take on the crucial task of judging vehicles in each of the 30 categories of awards. Trying to choose a winner from an abundance of highlydeserving entries in each class always turns out to be very challenging. F4J President Dan Alley said that no single volunteer or group stands out, as they all jump in and help wherever needed. But this year he wants to acknowledge Steve and Dodi Langham, who owned and operated D&D Automotive for many years. “They donated hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars every year, far beyond what their ads were worth,” said Dan. “The restoration

of the cars used as raffle prizes was just one of the ways Steve has helped the Function succeed. We look forward to many more years of working toigether.” Dan pointed out that all of the board members are also volunteers who do an outstanding job on the committees they run. “Without them we wouldn’t be where we’re at today,” he said. “It’s the board members who put this all together.”

Function 4 Junction Scholarships Helping young people gain a higher education

he Function 4 Junction is always free for spectators, but we do raise money through entry fees, raffle tickets and ad sales in this magazine. Since 2005 a large portion of those funds have gone to support our college scholarship program, which is administered by the Education Together Foundation. Every year an amount ranging between $1,000-$2,500 is awarded to several students who live within the Junction City School District. The number of scholarships and the amount of each grant depend on the funds raised that year and on the number of eligible applicants. In 2016 the Truck Function in Junction joined the program and awarded a $1,500 scholarship to Devon Locke. “This scholarship helped me pay for tuition and books for my third year of college,” said Devon. “I’m studying nuclear medicine and molecular imaging at Oregon Institute of Technology and will graduate in 2019. I am thankful for all of the support that our community has shown to me as I pursue my career.” All scholarships awarded by Education Together’s committee require students to have high grade-point averages, plus they submit a personal essay and a summary of their future goals. Although it’s not a requirement, the F4J scholarship gives special consideration to applicants interested in pursing a career in automotive-related industries. “A personal essay is the most crucial element in determining scholarship winners,” said Gary Nelson, president of Education Together. “It gives the best insight into the character of each individual and what they hope to accomplish

in the near future.” Awards Night 2016 was held in May at the First Baptist Church. F4J board member Crystal Freeman presented an Educational Award of $2,500 to Joseph LeGendre. Joseph now studies mechanical engineering at OSU. In addition, $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Garrett Brown and to Joaquin Rodriquez. Garrett is now a full-time student at Lane Community College where he is focused on computer science classes. Garrett plans to move on to OSU in the fall and work towards a bachelor’s degree. “This scholarship has helped with my tuition and taken some of that financial burden from my family,” said Garrett. “I sincerely appreciate the opportunity it has provided me.” Joaquin is enrolled in a a two-year welding and fabrication technologies program at LinnBenton Communiy College in Albany. He’s a part-time student while he works a part-time job at Western Pneumatics. “The scholarship was a huge help to me,” Joaquin said. “The books I need can get pretty expensive, but I was able to get them with that money.” Last year, thanks to the generous and unwavering support of fund sponsors, Education Together Foundation was able to award a record $86,967 in scholarships and grants to 59 deserving students, and ten community educational organizations. “In the past three years we’ve widened our parameters,” said Nelson. “I can say, however, that we wouldn’t exist at all if it weren’t for individuals and groups like the Function 4 Junction who provide the scholarship money that funds our awards.”

Viper Red and black. Camel and chrome. Those are the only colors you’ll see when you take a close look at the Function 4 Junction 2016 Best of Show award winner, owned by Ben Hogevall of Siletz. But more than anything, you’ll see Viper Red everywhere you look – even on the undercarriage. Ben has the hot rod that every high school gearhead dreams of driving. It looks fairly fast just standing still, but runs down the road a lot faster than that. Best of all, a driver will always look cool sitting behind the wheel of this immaculate automobile.

The car was built in Los Angeles more than a decade ago and came to Ben by way of New Zealand in 2014. Its history includes a fine pedigree. “Mickey Thompson’s company selected this car for its 2006 SEMA

show display, which is a huge honor,” said Ben. “Then they set it out for SEMA 2007, too. That’s like getting struck by lightning while winning the lottery.” Ben added that Summit Racing Equipment displayed it at their Super continued on next page

Barry Meguiar showed the Coupe on Car Crazy Central on the Speed Channel, and it was also the junior judges’ favorite at the prestigious Glenmoor Gathering of Fine Automobiles. Later that same year, a car lover from New Zealand bought the Coupe and shipped it home. Under the hood is a balanced 392 cu.in. early HEMI bored to .030, the kind of moter made famous by Don Garlitz in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. There are Ross pistons and an Iskenderian cam with Hot Head stainless valves. A tunnel ram holds a pair of Holley 390’s topped by a polished and finned “sugar scoop” air cleaner. “I grew up in the era of muscle cars with big engines,” Ben said. “Guys were pulling big Chrysler engines out of junkyard cars and rebuilding them. In 1964, Garlits was the first to build an engine that could do

It starts with a Lobeck frame that’s either painted in the same perfect Viper Red as the body or is covered in chrome. The 9-inch rear end is smoothed and painted red as well. There’s a transmission cooler for the ATI-built Turbo 400 that can handle up to to 800hp. Stopping power comes from polished Wilwood 4 piston disc brakes at all four corners. “I found the Coupe online and it was everything I dreamed of in a car,” said Ben, who once owned a 90 ft. ocean trawler and spent much of his life fishing off the Alaskan and Oregon coasts. “I basically bought the car sight unseen, and that was a little spooky. But I was able to talk with the original owner after seeing his name on a photo of the pink slip just by calling information in Ohio. What are the chances of that?” He was also able to track down the car’s builder, who was then in Arizona, to learn more about the beast. After Ben committed to buying the Coupe, it took a brokerage firm to get the car shipped across the Pacific and wrangled through customs. “It showed up on my doorstep in an enclosed trailer,” said Ben. “I put in a new battery, cleaned the carbs and replaced the fuel, then it was good to go.”

He plans to return to the Show ‘N Shine this year and bring the Coupe with him, so if you missed your chance to see this fine vehicle up close last year, look for it again in 2017. There’s a a very good chance it will show up at the awards ceremony again...

Robert Breaux brought the cleanest family truck you’ll ever see to the 2016 Show ‘N Shine...

...where winning a top award is a family tradition

It was back in 1975 when Jay Breaux bought a brand-new Chevrolet Scottsdale shortbed 4x4 pickup truck from the Uncle Bud’s dealership in Cottage Grove. To the best of anyone in the Breaux family’s memory, it cost around $4,500. He named the truck “Big Red” and drove it daily for the next twenty-five years before giving it to his eldest son, Jerry, who also used it as a work truck, a daily driver and an off-road vehicle. Another decade or so passed. In 2013 Jerry was going to get rid of what was now a well-used vehicle, but Jay still saw value in the truck. Jerry gave it back to his dad, who took the next couple of years restoring the truck to the better-than-new condition it’s in now. By the time of the Function last year, the forty-one year-old Scottsdale was completely refinished and the keys were now in the hands of Jay’s younger son,

Robert. Not long after the restoration was finished, Jay was diagnosed with a lifethreatening form of cancer. Sadly, Jay lost his battle with the disease last summer, only two weeks after he had the pleasant surprise of seeing his old truck displayed at the 2016 Show ‘N Shine, then later learning that it had won the People’s Choice award. Robert’s mother, Rochelle, who knows a lot about the art of car restoration, had conspired with her sons and the rest of the Breaux family to make sure Jay got a nice surprise that day. “They asked Dad if he felt like heading down to the show, and he jumped up and continued on next page

said ‘Yeah, let’s go’,” Robert recalled. “He didn’t know I had put the truck in the show under his name.” Jerry and Rochelle took Jay to the spot where his truck was being shown. and pretty much all worn out,” Robert said. “Dad restored it as close as possible to original condition after straightening the body, plus adding a few special touches to the interior. I suggested he paint it with a 2015 factory GM Maroon, which is pretty close to the original color.” The 2016 Show ‘N Shine is where Jay Breaux’s expertise in auto restoration was recognized one last time, which is more than what his family had hoped for. Having the truck win the People’s Choice award, which is often the most coveted prize given out at a car show, was beyond anyone’s expectations – and it all happened just in time for Jay to enjoy it, too... The truck was not in the best condition when Jay’s son gave it back, because he liked to drive it into places like this water-filled ditch near Low Pass...

1934 Ford 3-window Coupe

he Ford 3-window Coupe is the most recognizable model of street rod ever built, and one of the bestknown cars in automotive history. With sleek lines and a low profile, it attracted drivers who liked to go fast. Because relatively few of these models were made, the car was somewhat rare even when new, and is highly desirable within

the classic car community today. One of Ford’s best designs, it became such a popular style that dozens of companies began to build fiberglass replicas. Larry and Jane Brown of Springfield have an original 1934 Coupe, and it’s beautifully restored. They brought their coupe to the 2016 Show ‘N Shine where it caught the eye of Dan Alley,

The ‘34 Model 40B had some subtle styling changes from the previous two years. The front grille was flatter with a wider surround, and the hood louvers were straightened. There were two handles on each side of the hood, smaller head lights and cowl lamps, and a reworked logo. The bare metal dash insert was replaced by painted steel. That famous V8 released in 1932 was powered up again, this time to 85hp. It’s still possible to find rusty, original Henry Ford steel bodies of the ‘34 Coupe for sale in the $10,000 price range, but it takes some searching. It’s

also not easy to find genuine original parts for a coupe. Plenty of fiberglass kits and reproduction steel bodies are being sold, however, and a new allsteel reproduction body recently sold in Portland for $35,000. We weren’t able to interview the Browns or learn the story of their car,

but F4J president Dan Alley had this to say about his choice: “The way the lines of the fenders flowed, the running boards, the maroon and silver paint combination, the unique body style and the fact that it’s a twopassenger hot rod made this car stand out above all others in the Show.”

ay back in 1957, a Chevy Suburban Carryall configured with the full NAPCO 4x4 package – just like the one Doug Peters drove from Springfield to last year’s Show ‘N Shine – would have sold at a dealership for less than $3,000 if you could find one. Without the four-wheel drive option, the cost of the all-steel eight-passenger station wagon would have been half of that. Today, six decades later, it’s just a bit more. You can buy Doug’s award-winning ride for a mere $47,000 through several car sale websites. Prospective buyers can go online to

After getting it here, I shipped it off to Arizona where a friend of mine, Damon Bruns, is one of the country’s top experts in NAPCO 4x4 conversions.” The original automatic transmission was replaced with a correct 4-speed manual transmission, Spicer transfer case and Selectro heavy-duty lockout hubs. for a ‘56 with an inline-six Thriftmaster 235, standard steering and drum brakes. Everything is in working order except for original radio, which is still intact.” Prior to 1957, if you wanted a 4x4 Suburban you would start with a standard two-wheel drive wagon. NAPCO (Northwest Auto Parts Co., a

parts shop in Minnesota that specialized in four wheel drive systems) would ship you a 1,400-pound crate that held the 4x4 kit. It was relatively easy to install, as it only need four holes drilled to start turning a truck into a ‘mountain goat’, as they were called in those days. Suburbans came equipped with a bench seat wide enough to accommodate the driver and a middle passenger, with a separate seat for the right-side passenger that slid forward and improved access to the removable bench seats in the middle and third rows. It was a popular choice for hotels and resorts, who used the wagon to pick up guests from airports and train stations. It would be hard to find a fully restored Suburban Carryall this clean that’s for sale at any price. If you’ve ever dreamed of owning an award-winning off-road vehicle, then Doug Peters might have just what you’re looking for. Custom hot rods, like rat rods, are easy to spot - they look nothing like a showroom vehicle but a lot like something built in your neighbor’s garage, only cleaner.

The biggest difference between a rat rod and a custom build is often the paint. Rat rods are seldom painted by professionals and they generally come in only two colors – flat black or primer gray. A custom rod might be painted in wild colors, usually with professional quality.

Tales of the Rat Fink

Ed “Big Daddy” Roth fathered a new style of automotive art

hen he was a young boy growing up in Beverly Hills during the ‘30s and ‘40s, Ed Roth could do homework and keep up with his classes while he drew a lot of pictures of airplanes, hot rods and monsters. His dad was a cabinet maker, and it was in his workshop where Ed learned how to build things. He bought his first car, a 1933 Ford Coupe, in 1946 while still in high school. He went on to college and majored in engineering so he could pursue his interest in automotive design. By 1955 Ed owned several vehicles, was married and had five sons. While holding down a day job at Sears, he started pinstriping cars after work. Before long, using junkyard parts and a new product called “fiberglass”, Ed began creating automobiles in his garage. Move ahead to 1960 and Ed had become “Big Daddy” Roth, a hot-roddin’ gear head, mad scientist, and struggling artist who financed his inventions by selling drawings and t-shirts at drag events, fairs, and car shows. Big Daddy Roth would draw cartoons of monsters and pictures of cars, but when he airbrushed t-shirts with monsters driving cars, people went crazy and would line up at his booth. His most popular monster was Rat Fink, a character that started as a drawing Ed had put on his refrigerator. By 1963, teenagers across America were buying Rat Fink model kits and mass-produced Rat Fink T-shirts.

When Ed got so busy that his garage couldn’t handle the work, he hired several employees to help him build and produce more custom cars and t-shirts. Revell American produced model car kits that featured the Beatnik Bandit, Road Agent, Rat Fink, Drag Nut, Mother’s Worry, Mr. Gasser and a whole gang of hot-rodding monsters. During 1963, Revell paid Ed a one-cent royalty for each model sold – he brought in $32,000 that year in royalties. There were also several record albums produced. The band was called “Mr. Gasser and the Weirdos,” featuring Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. The songs on these records told stories about the Roth gang and their favorite pastimes, like hot-rodding and surfing. The general message was that being different was OK, and being weird was cool. “Big Daddy” artwork can be found throughout the late 80’s and mid-90’s in underground comics produced by Roth and Sloane. You can also find his art in tattoo parlors and in art galleries, as many consider his work to be fine art. Rat Fink and the gang, driving their hot rods, have become rock-art icons. Originally adopted by surf musicians, today images of the gang can be found everywhere. Ed Roth passed away on April 4, 2001 following a heart attack. His designs still appeal to young adults today. Rat Fink and the gang continue on, capturing new “Finks” both young and old with every decade that passes.

We Remember Herb Christensen

Herb Christensen is no longer with us, and he will be missed among local car enthusiasts as well as the larger community. He passed away last August. Herb was a longtime Junction City resident, a lover of classic cars and a regular participant in the Function 4 Junction from its very first days, when cars were shown in whatever empty field was available while drivers cruised up and

down River Road. He spent a total of thirteen years on the City Council during two different eras of public service, and he helped the Function team get permissions they needed as the event grew over the years. “I first met Herb when I was working as the local police chief here in town,” said former chief and former mayor Mike Cahill. “I was acutely aware of his great interest in cars and I especially coveted his blue Plymouth Barracuda.” Jim and Karen Leach both worked

with Herb over the years during their terms on the Council, and they have fond memories of him. “Herb was always wheelin’ and dealin’ in cars,” said Jim. “As far as his work on the Council, I know that whatever he did, he thought it was best for the city.” “He was a strong voice for the Function on the Council,” said F4J president Dan Alley. “We owed Herb a big debt of thanks for his help every year.”
