Sean Murray Obituary T
reasured for his kindness, generosity and dedicated service across decades, the Irish community of London will remember and sorely miss the late funeral director, hailing from Boley, Ballycullane in County Wexford. amie Doyle of Doyle’s Funeral Home, The Old Rectory, Rosbercon, New Ross was quick to lament the loss of a man considered a true credit to the funeral industry, both in Ireland and across the United Kingdom. Since opening their new Funeral Home a little over four years ago Sean was very encouraging, and it was an immense honour for Doyles to be chosen by Sean and his family to return him to his final resting place in his beloved County Wexford. Huge numbers travelled from near and across the water to pay their last respects. Sean sadly passed away on November 25th past, following an illness, aged 72. He is survived by his wife Mary; sons, Larry and John; daughters Joanne and Julie; grandchildren; brothers; sisters and friends. Born to Josie and Larry Murray, he emigrated to London aged 16 where he found work in an undertakers, before opening his own business in Fulham in 1982, a busy Irish community at the time, where he set up home with a Sligo woman, Mary. There was little time to get used to things for Sean, who devoted the majority of his time to catering for 250 funerals in
J
his first year in operation, predominantly Irish folk. The years and decades to follow saw the business develop into a household name and genuine institution, within the Irish community especially. A proud and devoted family and community man, Sean was always at hand to help those who had just moved to London as they found their way. It was this care and consideration that ensured every funeral was carried out to perfection, with the same sensitivity, respect and care shown to all who crossed his door, regardless of social standing or appearance. Despite holding down the notorious 24 hour life of a funeral director, Sean’s wife and children were always uppermost in his mind, as were his grandchildren in more recent times. Such a demanding career is often made easier if you have something to take your mind off things; for Sean this was buying and fixing vintage cars and tractors. He also kept a house back in his native Wexford, which the family would travel to via ferry from Rosslare Harbour at least four times a year. A gentleman until the end, he will be sorely missed. Golden Charter and Independents: Partners in 2019 Golden Charter began 2019 with a widened range of support for independent funeral directors, and Konrad Wilkinson, your Area Business Manager for Ireland, is on hand to help you get the most benefit possible from the changes. Support across your business Supporting independent businesses is what separates Golden Charter from the other funeral plan providers in the market. The organisation is owned by an association of independent funeral directors, who benefit from its scale and reach to support their work locally. Across Ireland, that involves working with more than 200 independent funeral directors, around 100 of whom actively offer funeral plans to families through Golden Charter. This year, the company is broadening what that support means, going beyond plan sales. Konrad said: “In 2019, the focus is on partnership. Beyond supporting you to provide a funeral plan product, and even beyond helping you reach as many families as possible to help them plan ahead, we want to assist you with any aspect of your business that could benefit from additional support. “The fundamentals are still vital: we are continuing to use our trusted name within national advertising as well as direct regional marketing support such as leaflet drops. If anything, that is more beneficial than ever, as our work in recent years has led to more recognition of the Golden Charter name than ever before. What is new is the broader work and expertise we can now offer alongside that core work.” Golden Charter business managers like Konrad are being equipped with the skills 6 | FuneralTimes
Konrad Wilkinson to offer specialised support to independent firms of all shapes and sizes, and one key focus already has been local marketing. Every area has its own unique properties. In one funeral director’s case, staff were required to work out of a temporary structure sitting in front of the usual main entrance while redecoration was carried out inside the building. The temporary cabin looked out of place sitting on the high street, and less people were coming over the door to what didn’t appear to be an office. The funeral director enlisted Golden Charter’s help and a solution was agreed to ‘wrap’ the building with imagery that incorporated the Independent’s branding while fitting in with the high street and making it clear that the structure was an office, turning a business concern into a unique talking point. From one-off marketing challenges to
assistance complying with stringent new regulation like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the partnership approach enables Golden Charter act as a flexible problem-solver for any area of your business that you want to develop. To take advantage of that support, or to discuss what is possible locally, simply speak to Konrad. The importance of Independents The importance of protecting and growing Independents’ share of the funerals market is becoming clearer all the time. Not only do independent funeral directors make up most of the sector, their benefits to families are increasingly undeniable. Recently the UK Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) became the latest to support this point, acknowledging that some “smaller funeral directors have sought to keep their prices low” while the larger businesses have enforced “consistently high year-on-year price increases”. In September, insurer Royal London identified a 10% gap between what Independents and “the large corporates” charge. And it is not just through pricing that Independents prove their value, also priding themselves on their service standards. Golden Charter’s own plan holders’ satisfaction echoes this, sitting above 90%, and its latest quarter of plan holder surveying shows that 19 out of every 20 new customers are satisfied with their decision*. With plan holders happy with their experience, and The Golden Charter Trust
continuing to carry out its long-established job of looking after plan holder funds independently of Golden Charter (as of the latest actuary’s report, “the Trust’s assets were over 100% of the funds required to meet funeral costs covered by the plans in the Trust” allowing for increases in line with CPI-measured inflation), Golden Charter’s key focus now is building on its effective partnership with Independents. Konrad concluded: “All the latest indications confirm how independent funeral directors and Golden Charter are both doing the right thing for customers. If we keep growing our support for those Independents, that leads right through to the families they serve. “2019 is about making our support all about what you need, and helping with areas you might never have considered relevant for Golden Charter in the past. I hope to work with all of you throughout the year to make things better for you and for the families you serve.” Independent funeral directors in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland can contact Konrad Wilkinson on konrad. wilkinson@goldencharter.co.uk or (+44) 07715 038 663. *Golden Charter Plan Holder Satisfaction Research, CJM Research, October-December 2018 †Actuary’s Report, The Golden Charter Trust, 2018 https://www. goldenchartertrust.co.uk/statementsreports/actuary-report/

Full floral service T
he placement of flowers at burial sites is a ritual etched throughout our history, and in fact, prehistory. Floral evidence has been discovered at some of the very earliest known burial sites. While it can be difficult to articulate your message of sympathy when saying goodbye, with grief and, at times, simply awkwardness playing a role, flowers require little verbal accompaniment. As symbols of compassion and kindness, funeral flowers promote a warmth and grace at a funeral. Sharkey Funeral Directors offer a complete florist service through its flower shop, All Seasons Florists. Should you wish to have fresh or artificial flower arrangements, bouquets or wreaths provided, the Co. Roscommon business offer a complete and professional floristry service. Operated by Tom Sharkey & Sons Ltd., the family have been Funeral Directors for over a century, stretching back to the late 1800's and across four generations. As such, there is a long tradition and understanding of the role of floral bequests at funeral services, in the home of the deceased and in the church. All Seasons Florists carry a wide selection of silk flower wreaths and arrangements as well as offering fresh flower wreaths, bouquets and many other arrangements. Customised floral tributes are also a speciality, so please do not hesitate to ask for a floral tribute which reflects your own remembrances.
Sharkey Funeral Directors also offer for wholesale, their contemporary range of artificial funeral wreaths and bouquets in addition to their custom wreath creation service. Please complete the wholesale wreath enquiries form on their website and they will contact you regarding your enquiry as soon as possible. www.allseasonsflorists.ie

he 39th AGM was very successful and well supported by members from all parts of the Country. Prior to the meeting a number of suppliers exhibited their merchandise or services which provided members an opportunity to view and hear about new products and systems in the marketplace. The AGM followed the normal format which included a full review of the Association’s affairs and reports from the various Committees. A highlight of the meeting was the presentation of Certificates by Joanne Cooney, Course Co-ordinator to this year’s FDCA Students. Immediately following the meeting there was a very informative presentation by Mary Carroll and her colleague Edmond O'Donnell from Bank of Ireland Bereavement Support Unit. The Dinner Dance in the evening included a speech by Senator Marie Louise O’Donnell, author of “Finite Lives” a report which examines State Services around dying, death
and bereavement. Senator O’Donnell gave a very humorous and entertaining account of life in her home town in the West of Ireland which was very true to life in the 50’s throughout the country. She recognised the extraordinary work of Funeral Directors and complimented the profession on its continued commitment to their communities and the wonderful work they do.

Celebrating 10 years in the industry H ailing from Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, Gary Currie Repatriation Services were recently thrilled to celebrate their 10th year in business. Consistently regarded as one of the most popular and trusted repatriation services in Ireland, Gary and his wife Ciara have had the privilege of working alongside a vast number of funeral companies throughout the country and currently repatriate loved ones as often as five times per week from all parts of the UK to Ireland. In bygone days repatriation by air was a more common choice as this was customary in Ireland. Most funeral directors in Ireland will contact Currie Repatriation if their services are required and can rest assured that all documentation, liaising with coroners and hospital mortuaries, will be handled immediately to ensure a shorter time frame when repatriating a loved one, therefore the engagement of a UK funeral company will not be required. With our
Husband and wife team, Ciara and Gary Currie private ambulance we repatriate by road and sea directly to the funeral premises, eliminating any journey to airports. Gary and Ciara value the continued support from all their loyal customers. For any quotations or to simply find out more about our services please call Gary on 07789 134798 or Ciara on 07425 156451.

For the attention of all Northern Ireland Funeral Directors From Declan Finnegan Dear All Funeral Directors in Northern Ireland Lakelands Crematorium, Dublin Road, Cavan welcome all funeral directors from Northern Ireland. With easy access and hassle-free paperwork, we have had a large volume of business to date coming from the North. Four forms are all that are required - Form A is filled in by the Funeral Director, Form B by a family member and witnessed by the funeral director, no JP required, just an out of state certificate (which can be got from the coroner’s office in Belfast once the death is registered) and a copy of the death certificate. We will then organise Form D from the Irish coroner. We accept a faxed or emailed copy of each document but the original forms must be handed into our office on the day of cremation. There is no extra charge for the weekend or Bank holidays. We are open seven days a week and can arrange a cremation at any time during the day or evening. We like to give family time in the crematorium, so no service is ever rushed or set to a time limit. It’s nice for family to meet and talk to friends and relations that they might not have seen in a long time and to talk and listen to stories of their loved ones who have passed away. We can also download a favourite song or Hymn and this can be played during the service. The service can also be viewed on our web cam by family and friends who cannot attend the service. We provide clergy or civil celebrants and we facilitate for all needs to the best of our ability. For further information on booking a cremation, including our price list and the documents required to book a cremation with us, please contact Declan or Grainne 0n 00353 49 4362200. akelands Funeral Home and Crematorium is a family run business proudly serving the people of Cavan as well as those much farther afield. Giving back to the community which has supported the firm since its inception in 1938 means a lot to Declan and the team at Lakelands. This was further evidenced by their recent presentation of €6,000 to the local St. Christopher’s Hospice.
The funds came as a result of recycling residual metal from the Cremation process (coffin nails, metal implants, etc). Declan and his team sent these items to be recycled through a specialised Dutch crematoria metal recycling company called Ortho Metals. Monies received back from this recycling process are donated by Lakeland Crematorium to St Christopher’s Hospice, Cavan.

T
he steel Memorial Tree in the gardens of Colliers Funeral Home offers a new way to remember our loved ones. By dedicating a leaf in their honour and placing it on this beautiful ‘nature’ inspired monument, people are given a meaningful way to celebrate the lives of those they love and leave a lasting legacy in their name. In ‘full bloom’ the tree will hold 600 individually engraved memorial leaves and the proceeds from each and every one will go to Purple House Cancer Support to help grow and sustain their support network in the local community. The beauty of this monument is that it offers an additional or sole way of honouring someone special regardless of how much time has passed. Today, many families are opting for cremation and the scattering of ashes and so the tree allows them a special place to remember those no longer with us. Purple House has been selected as benefactors of the proceeds of this tree due to their strong local origins and bonds within the immediate community.
“A life remembered, a life cared for and a lasting tribute to someone special.”

Former BIFD President, Clive Pearson, chooses Coleman Milne

S
tarting out life as a joinery business in 1920s Huddersfield, Pearson Funeral Service continues to grow and evolve as its 100th year of trading draws nearer. Founded by Alfred Bagley, the business was later handed down to his son Peter and has been in the capable hands of Clive Pearson since 2003. As former National President of the BIFD, Clive understands only too well the need for excellence in the industry. All of his staff receive full training in their relevant areas of the business meaning that their services are provided with efficiency and care. Pearson Funeral Service has truly established itself as a trustworthy business and continues to grow with the help of local recommendations. While our main business area at Coleman
Milne is manufacturing quality vehicles, we also have an in-house team who look after our Approved Used range, acquiring only the best pre-owned vehicles. This range is ideal for customers who want to upgrade their fleet but may not necessarily have the budget to invest in a fleet of brand new vehicles. Clive opted for a pair of Jaguar vehicles – a hearse with matching limousine – to join the existing fleet of elegant vehicles. “Huge thank you to Eddie and the team at Coleman Milne for helping to source these vehicles. I like to go for the classic look with our fleet and these Jaguar vehicles fit the bill perfectly. This was my first Coleman Milne experience and I’d definitely consider them in the future.” FuneralTimes | 31

NAFD News NAFD meets with CMA to discuss interim report into the funeral sector I n December, the NAFD met with the Competition and Markets Authority to discuss publication of the CMA’s interim report and its consultation on the launch of a full market investigation. The NAFD reiterated in the meeting that the Association and its members would like to see greater oversight of the funeral profession and that it welcomes discussions about improving transparency, identifying a consistent minimum set of industry standards and what kind of regulatory structure should be adopted. However, the Association also made it clear that it does not accept many of the sweeping
statements made about funeral directors in the report - as they simply do not tally with the evidence not only presented to, but also commissioned by, the CMA over the course of the Market Study. As a consequence, the NAFD responded to the CMA’s consultation, which closed in early January, that it believes a full market investigation is necessary to ensure that the CMA is able to reach a greater understanding of what consumers want and how funeral directors operate. The NAFD also sought reassurance about how the CMA will ensure balance and fairness during any market investigation.
The NAFD’s Class of 2018 graduates at Birmingham City University Each December, all successful students of the NAFD’s diploma qualifications in Funeral Directing and Funeral Arranging & Administration, as well as successful students of the Certificate of Education for prospective tutors, are invited, along with their family and friends, to a graduation ceremony at Birmingham City University - to celebrate their achievement and receive their Diploma. The 2018 event saw the highest ever number of students attend to collect their award, with more than 80 graduates donning their robes to mark the culmination of studies. This year’s Scales Awards for the highest exam scores went to Amy Swinbourne (Dip FAA) & Alexis Nicklin (Dip. FD). FuneralTimes | 33
NFE 2019 – the final countdown! I
t’s show year! With just six months to go, we’re on the final stretch of the road to Stoneleigh Park and the National Funeral Exhibition 2019. The exhibition, which takes place at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire on Friday 7 – Sunday 9 June 2019, is more than just the only major funeral exhibition in the UK – it is also rated as one of the most important events of its kind worldwide, attracting more than 4,000 visitors from 19 nations. From the end of January, visitor registration is open on the NFE website – www.nationalfuneralexhibition.co.uk. Attending the show is free, so why not plan ahead and skip the queues on the day? It will only take a few minutes to enter your details, and you will also have the opportunity to register in advance for education sessions taking place over the course of the three days. You will receive an information pack nearer to the date of the exhibition containing e-passes that can be scanned when you arrive at the exhibition. If you have a smart phone you won’t even need to print off the e-passes. It’s a much simpler, cost-effective way of getting you into the exhibition as quickly as
possible and all designed to make your day enjoyable, seamless and focused on the main thing - networking, meeting colleagues and seeing what is new within the industry. When the registration section of the website is launched, we will also be revealing the speakers who will be sharing insights and expertise in their field and providing educational seminars within the NAFD Lecture Theatre. If you would like to be considered for a speaking slot, please contact Kirsti Clifford on 07710 668 377 or email kirsti@nafd.org.uk.

in Parliament. Ms Pattenden also thanked Mark Pawsey MP for serving as the Group’s Chair over the last three years. Mr Pawsey will continue to serve as an officer of the Group. Despite the ongoing Brexit developments, the lunch was well attended by parliamentarians, including Diana Johnson MP, Sir Peter Bottomley MP, Sir Edward Davey MP, Lord Dykes and Baroness Burt. Former Labour MP and Chair of the APPG, Bill Olner, also attended the lunch. The
event provided an opportunity for MPs and Peers to discuss issues currently affecting the sector with representatives of the NAFD, including the Competition & Markets
Authority investigation, pre-paid funeral plans and Social Fund Funeral Payments. Steven Wibberley, Chief Executive of Cruse Bereavement Care, was also in attendance.
NAFD responds to three-year delay on EU formaldehyde ban T
he announcement of a delay of three years in implementing the ban on use of formalin, part of the EU’s Carcinogens and Mutagens Directive, has been welcomed by the NAFD to allow funeral firms to continue the search for a feasible alternative to formaldehyde. As funeral directors know, even with refrigeration, the human body will begin to deteriorate significantly within a couple of days and so embalming plays an important role in helping families to come to terms with loss by enabling them to see their loved one, in death, without this deterioration causing even more distress. Currently, only embalming using formalin (the liquid version of formaldehyde) is able to achieve this. Although studies have shown possible links between formaldehyde and serious illness, this has been at much higher levels of exposure to the heavily diluted levels of formalin used in embalming. It has also been proven that there is an ambient level of formaldehyde present in most British homes and commercial buildings because it naturally occurs in wooden furniture and flooring, is used as a preservative in the manufacture of other products such as carpets, and is used as a fungicide and germicide in consumer cleaning products among many others. It is also present in exhaust emissions from cars. As the main trade association for the
profession, the National Association of Funeral Directors requires its 4,100 funeral home members to abide by a Code of Professional Standards which includes a requirement to adhere to all official guidance on the safe use and storage of all chemicals used in the care of bodies, including formalin. These include meeting requirements for upgraded ventilation in mortuaries, the use of appropriate protective clothing and equipment, ensuring all HSE and COSHH health and safety standards are met, and a strict adherence to manufacturers’ instructions. In addition, many NAFD funeral directors study for the professional qualifications offered by the British Institute of Embalmers, to ensure they are doing everything possible to be able to provide embalming as a service whilst protecting their employees from any possible harm. Jon Levett, Chief Executive of the NAFD said: “We welcome the three year delay. Our aim remains to ensure that, in the future, we do not find ourselves in a situation where the window of opportunity for families to visit their loved ones, or decide if they wish for them to be dressed in their own clothes for the funeral, is reduced significantly because of an inability to delay deterioration effectively. This would, in effect, restrict choices which are known to have an important impact upon the grieving process.” FuneralTimes | 35

Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust receive incredible donation F
ollowing the death of Co. Tyrone man Tiarnan Rafferty (22) an incredible £185,000 has been raised in his memory which was then presented to Colin and Eithne of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust. Galbally man Tiarnan, sadly lost his life in a motorcycle crash in February last year in Australia. Tiarnan’s family and friends held an event at Galbally Community Centre recently where representatives from several groups presented a cheque to Colin and Eithne. The Newry couple set up the charity following the death of their 26-year-old son Kevin in a suspected hit-and-run in New York in 2013 and help relatives bring home the remains of Irish people killed abroad, each year providing assistance to dozens of devastated families. Colin was hugely surprised with the amount raised in less than a year in memory of Mr Rafferty, echoing a similar donation from three years ago when €207,000 was handed over in memory of Martin Cadden (22) from Co Cavan who passed away following a road crash in New Zealand in 2015. The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust will use the money to assist families in the future who
will receive the same news as Tiernan's and so many others. The £185,000 was the result of a mammoth effort by Tiarnan's family and friends in his local community as well as in New York and Australia, who organised fundraising events and donated money, including a tractor run, 10km walk and run, raffle, skydive and function. To date the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust has been involved in bringing home the bodies of close to 500 people, with Colin receiving the Points of Light award from UK Prime Minister Theresa May in recognition of the charity's work last August. Obit Update January 2019 2018 was a year of firsts for Obit - many clients were able to review a full years history and so we did a lot of work developing suitable reports, such as creating a list of all clients from the previous year in order to invite them to a special memorial celebration as well as the more usual reports summarising the year’s activities. To support this, we added a number of new export tools that allow you to create printed reports or send results to spreadsheet or other electronic formats. Just before last Christmas, and responding to the feedback from Users, we released a slew of improvements that make Obit more responsive and easier to use - it was a timely coincidence that this was technically
version 3! In particular, we have made it transparent if an invoice has been produced or sent or indeed has been paid. Looking into the details of a funeral you are able to see at a glance if an item has been included in an invoice or not or if a payment has been lodged. In short, you are guided to those elements where work is needed. In addition, in the Finance area we have incorporated some logic checks to focus attention where it is required. We would like to thank all for their continued support, encouragement and feedback and look forward to continuing to develop Obit throughout 2019.

evolution.coleman-milne.co.uk
European styling lands on UK shores thanks to Coleman Milne With a rich history spanning decades of design and manufacture of ceremonial hearses and limousines, Coleman Milne have announced the launch of a new hearse, based on the latest Mercedes E-Class. The new hearse has been expertly redesigned by the company’s in-house engineering team and draws inspiration from the modern design styling of continental European vehicles. Part of the design brief was to maintain the striking good looks which accompany the E-Class as it leaves the Mercedes factory. To achieve this goal, the re-engineered upper body retains the existing Mercedes windscreen and standard front doors of the base vehicle to give a sleek and streamlined appearance. While it is certainly sleeker than its predecessor, any concerns about the size of the vehicle are unfounded. The dimensions of the new hearse mirrors its classic counterpart in all but height, which has been cleverly reduced by 75mm. To compensate, the deck has been lowered by the same amount in turn, offering a generous internal deck space. The reimagining of the lower deck set up means underdeck storage facilities are still available as well as the option of a two or three bearer deck. The latest design builds on the same high specification of its classic counterpart thanks to the technically excellent underpinning of the Mercedes E-Class. The newest vehicle in the Coleman Milne stable also boasts a range of innovative features and options including a no-cost glass roof and a choice of petrol or diesel powertrains to suit your business. Due to be unveiled at this year’s NFE at Stoneleigh Park, the vehicle will be available for demonstration from late June. BIE News Southern Division Hi all, First of all a very happy new year to you all. Let me take this opportunity to remind of the 90th AGM and National Conference which will be held this year at the Grand Hotel, Malahide, Co. Dublin, on Saturday, April 27th and continue until Sunday, April 28th 2019. It’s not every year we get to have a National President from the Irish division and for the previous year we have seen Barbara Fowley MBIE carry out her duties in a manner we should all be so proud of. She has been an exemplary ambassador for our division and I would ask every member to attend at least some element of conference and give Barbara the support she deserves. So many important decisions are made at the AGM and this year, because it is on our very doorstep, we have the opportunity to be
involved in these decisions. Also can I please encourage as many members as possible to attend our divisional meetings. There are so many people working behind the scenes to make these events more interesting. This year we should have some surprises in store and some very interesting guest speakers. But remember, without members support, we do not have a division. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at conference and indeed at our own divisional meetings. Thank You.

BEREAVEMENT is what happens to us. GRIEF is what we feel, and MOURNING is what we do. L
ast year, one of the largest undertakers in the UK carried out a survey looking into attitudes around death and dying. The survey revealed that 41% wanted their funeral to be a celebration of life rather than a sad occasion. As a civil funeral celebrant, I guide and help a family structure a funeral service for their loved one - helping them say farewell, as we weave together the ceremony, just as they want it. And while the majority want a funeral that celebrates a life, it doesn’t mean that I think funerals should be turned into parties. In my experience, putting fun into a funeral service rarely helps anyone with the heartbreak of death and the complexities of grief. We as a society tend to keep our grief suppressed, and the majority of funeral poems and reflections tell us not to feel what we are really feeling. We are asked to smile rather than cry, and to forget our sadness as if nothing has happened - to toughen up and not to show our fragility. But when a loved one dies, everything changes. Unless we find a way to openly express our grief, it can manifest itself in other ways anger, depression or addiction. We need to find a new way to mourn, one that says it’s OK to cry, to feel the sense of loss, and to be supported by funerals that let us mourn. We need poetry that encourages us to express our feelings, whatever they may be on a particular day. A civil funeral can offer a highly person54 | FuneralTimes
alised, emotionally intelligent, sensitive and creative service. I believe that personalising a funeral involves much more than just red or white flowers. It’s about a coloured coffin, a balloon release, acknowledging the deceased interests or hobbies. Or it could simply be a funeral that allows people to express their sadness while paying tribute to a wonderful life. Funerals are about the dead, but for the benefit of the living. Grief can be a complicated mix of all emotions with no structure. As a funeral celebrant, I understand the importance of allowing space for all those emotions to be present at a service. Death is often described as the last taboo, but lots of people want to talk about it. In recent years, I’ve noticed that people are more open around their emotions, and they have a desire and curiosity to explore their mortality. From this will come a more hopeful future, where funerals will become more emotional, brave, and honest. Funerals, and how they are conducted, can play a very important role in a family’s grief. So I say yes to celebrating a life, but also not to forget to mourn a death. Padraic Cawley MICF, Civil Funeral Celebrant Tel: 087 267 6050 email: padraic@padraiccawley.ie www.padraiccawley.ie

ith a history stretching back to the 1830s, the Heart of England Cooperative Society has continually served the communities of Warwickshire, Leicestershire and South Northamptonshire, operating very successful food and funeral businesses and a strong property portfolio. Heart of England’s service caters to grieving families at the most difficult of times, providing the compassion and traditional values of an independent regional Society with the modern approach of a professional corporation. Late Nights and Early Mornings A
s those who work in the funeral industry know, it is not a 9 to 5 job, a call can come in at any time and on any day of the week, especially Bank Holidays and the times when others are peacefully enjoying time off from their jobs. It is the same for Civil Funeral celebrants; once they are asked to look after a family they are on call for those people to help them through what can be a very difficult and stressful time. Mary Elizabeth Dillon from Civil Funerals Ireland is very familiar with these situations. Before becoming a full time celebrant she did indeed have a 9 to 5 job but those days of signing out at 5pm are now a distant memory. Recently, she recalls her day began at 10.30am and finished at 12.30am the following day. I received a call to visit a family in north county Dublin and sat down with them at 10.30am to plan a funeral to take place the next day at 3pm. The meeting went well and, as is commonplace, Mary Elizabeth left the family with a list of items to be confirmed, including titles of music and names of speakers. They promised to get back by phone by 6pm that evening. Mary Elizabeth takes the story up, by 6pm I had heard nothing but that didn’t worry me, I like to be flexible and fully understand
the pressures people are facing in these situations. But as the evening went by without contact I began to get concerned, I finally managed to make contact with the family about 10.30pm and to cut a long story short managed to get most of the information I needed at 12.30 midnight. It was only then that I finally got to sit down and put the ceremony together. It was far from signing out at 5pm! That said, Mary Elizabeth accepts this as all part of the job, a very fulfilling and worthwhile job. She remarks that when the ceremony is complete and the family are happy and satisfied that they have done their loved one proud it is all worthwhile and the lateness of the hour melts away. ‘I never want a family to feel pressurised when making arrangements but there is always time pressure and my only concern is to create the very best possible ceremony which will be fitting and true to the deceased.’ As for finishing at 5pm, well that is in the past and Mary Elizabeth has no regrets, she says, ‘being a Civil Funeral Celebrant has brought me into contact with wonderful people and into work in a unique profession, and I wouldn’t change a thing.’

A plethora of funeral stories By Mattie Lennon
I was at a funeral in Blessington before Christmas. An acquaintance of mine, a man of few words, who is shy and retiring, was obviously having difficulty bringing himself to offer his condolences to the grieving widow. Eventually he approached her with a concise, “Plethora”. She was obviously pleased because she replied, “That means a lot.” A Valleymount carpenter was sick and, thinking he was on his death-bed, he sent to Naas for a solicitor to draw up his will. The lawyer arrived and set to work at the bedside. The inconsolable wife was listening in the adjoining room. “Now”, said the solicitor “Tell me exactly what is owing to you.” “Sorrell Hill Construction owes me 500 Euro for doing a roof.” “Malachy Davenport owes me 100 Euro.” The wife is thinking,” Mick is rational to the last.” The supposedly dying man says, “And a lad of the Lennons owes me 50 Euro“. Now the wife is thinking, “Fair play to you Mick.“ Next he says “And I owe 200 Euro to...” With that the wife rushes into the room and says to the solicitor, “He’s raving now.”
There’s a woman in Listowel and it is believed that she was widowed thirtynine years ago. But... before Christmas a group from north Kerry went on a shopping trip to New York. A sharp-eyed woman from Drumcluck claims that she saw the “dead” husband in Macey’s. This revelation prompted respected journalist Billy Keane to offer the following advice in his Post-festive column, Keane’s Kingdom, “The next time you see a dead man shopping with his new girlfriend, please, please don’t go telling his widow.” 75% of people suffer from glossophobia. That, as you know, is fear of public speaking. According to studies, people’s number one fear is public speaking. Death is number two! Does that sound right? I had time to think over Christmas and I was wondering; does this mean that if you go to a funeral, you’re better off in the coffin than doing the eulogy?
“Often when I pray I wonder if I am not posting letters to a non-existent address.” (C. S. Lewis.)
I’m not going to tell you where either of these pictures were taken!

Michael Healy-Rae is one of our most colourful and hard-working politicians. In his first book Time to Talk, recently published, he introduces us to some informative “Funeralrelated” essays. Such as the time his father, the legendary Jackie, turned a hackney car into a make-shift hearse by carrying a coffin complete with corpse on its roof. And of course there was the time that Michael himself got a late night phone call from a Hospital Matron. The request was to collect an amputated leg. The amputee had stipulated that the leg was to be collected by Michael Healy-Rae and that it was to be buried with a priest present to say a few prayers. Michael collected the leg and... ah, I’ll let him take the story from here, “With no priest to say the prayers I did Sean and Paddy were walking home after a party, in Poulaphouca, and decided to take a shortcut through Baltyboys graveyard. When they were right in the middle of the cemetery they were startled by a tap-tap-tapping noise coming from the misty shadows. Catching their breath and trembling with fear, they found an old man, with a hammer and
the next best thing. I phoned the most religious member of my family and asked them if they would fill in and do the honours. We all duly did the task and buried the leg in the plot. Let there be no jokes about having one foot in the grave, I won’t have it. The proper prayers were said for the quick recovery of the person who had lost the limb, and of course for the parents interred in the grave we were after opening. We even had some holy water on hand so that everything could be done accordingly. The moral of the story is that when you’re a politician, you never know what favour someone will ask of you when they ring your phone, but after having buried a leg for someone in the middle of the night, well I doubt there’s any favour you could request from me now that would have me bat an eyelid.” chisel, chipping away at one of the headstones. ‘Holy God, Mister,’ said
Sean, his voice quivering, ‘You scared
us half to death. We thought you were a ghost! What on earth are you doing working here so late at night?’ “I was a Ballyknockan stonecutter”, the old
chiseller grumbled, “And those eejits have misspelled my name.”
A well-organized couple in south County Dublin had a busy day ahead of them. They were
going to pray (at the funeral of a friend) and to visit a relative in Tallaght Hospital. Before leaving the house they filled out the two appropriate cards. A sympathy card for the
bereaved and a “Get Well” card for the patient. Neither recipient was impressed. Yes. You’re way ahead of me. Didn’t they mix up the cards.

Coleraine Funeral Director in act of generosity T
he start of this year saw Hugh Wade, the well respected Coleraine Funeral Director step forward to assist the community once again. In 2009, workmen tearing down a derelict house in Portstewart came across the skeletal remains of a newborn baby in the attic, wrapped in a London Evening Standard dating from 1935. Ultimately, despite investigation and trips to the UK Home Office, identification proved hopeless. This January, a local man walking his dog through Flowerfields Cemetery came across a simple wooden cross surrounded by flowers and a teddy bear with the inscription ‘Unknown Child, known only by God’. The same man raised awareness through Facebook and collected £750 to cover the
cost of a replacement headstone. However, before this could occur, Hugh Wade Funeral Director stepped forward, promising to provide the stone and engraving, with the money raised now intended for Coleraine’s Angel Garden – a remembrance garden for the parents of stillborn children.

Wilcox Limousines Launches Jaguar XF Funeral Range
W T
he UK’s leading funeral vehicle coachbuilder has introduced a new range of Jaguar Hearses and Limousines. Wilcox Limousines, the UKs only Jaguar Cars approved convertor is a third generation family business with over 70 years of coachbuilding experience, has supplemented the Jaguar XJ range with a Jaguar XF based UK hearse and limousine, after the huge success of XF 3 door launch internationally. The new range includes a 5 door Hearse and matching 6 door Limousine which have been designed for the UK Market. Based on the Jaguar XF, the vehicles boast a number of updated features, including on the hearse a double deck with a high roof, large side windows, long deck, three bearer and for the limousine a raised roof, an extralong rear door, a widened interior width giving 3 extra inches. The vehicles are available with both petrol and diesel engines, also for the first time all-wheel drive. The vehicles have satellite navigation, leather trim, walnut door capping, cruise control and rear parking aid, all as standard. Paul Wilcox, CEO at Wilcox Limousines said: “We’re delighted to launch this new and exciting range - opening up our vehicles to a wider range of clients. The industry called for this vehicle, and so we have
listened and created it. The new XF Range have all of the traditions of the exisiting XJ range, along with the very modern underpinnings, such as its base structure is aluminium and carbon fibre and is constructed using techniques usually reserved for the aircraft industry. The options available include a glass roof and panoramic LED rear lighting. The limousine features a rear door, which is longer that a standard saloon for easier access, the limousine is also wider inside than a standard saloon.” Paul Wilcox concluded: “We’re always looking for ways to innovate and improve on the design of our funeral vehicles. They may have a traditional appearance, but that’s not to say we don’t constantly look to modernise in line with demand. The bespoke nature of what we do means that we are happy to incorporate specific customer requests where possible. The introduction of this model will serve to improve on our already extensive coach coachbuilding capability.” “This new model offers amazing value for money starting at £114,950 inc VAT and mainland UK delivery and features a number of detail changes which increase the already high specification of the vehicle.” For further information please visit http:// limousines.co.uk/ or email enquiries@ wilcox.uk
