T
his thesis concerns a Wooden Boatbuilding School and Sailing Centre in Hermoupolis, Syros. The islands long history and tradition in maritime and boatbuilding makes it an ideal place for such an endeavor. With particular emphasis in sailboats, this project tries to blend the tradition of boatbuilding, that employs the island from 1824, with modern sailing and the technology concerning it.
related on the subject, the history of the industrial ruins and the location, were used to experiment. Elements like the wind and the cloth-fabric topology were studied in interaction with the 3d model of the remained building via CFD and dynamic simulations. Furthermore, an investigation upon monocoque shell structures through examples, simulations and 3d prints were part of the research.
The complex consists of three separate building sections. A Wooden Boatbuilding School, a Museum and a modern Sail Loft. The school provides specialized workshop for building and repairing wooden boats and teaching classrooms. The Sail Loft equipped with cutting-edge technology for the construction of modern sails, the lighter and stiffer composite cloths ever made, will provide innovative performance oriented construction methods. The Museum will host maritime heritage exhibits of the island, as well as material about sailing in the modern era. The location is in the southern part of the port of Hermoupolis, in the ruined textile factory of Ladopoulos family. The factory is located at the end of the city’s industrial zone, filling a series of industrial buildings. Foundations such as the Industrial Museum of Hermoupolis and the Nautical Club of Syros, can be crucial to the dynamic of the island to support such an effort.
These elements articulate a wider dynamic system that reflects multiple factors, such as functional requirements, local conditions and materialities. Thus the main idea of the synthesis is a museum that ‘articulates’ both the tradition (Wooden Boatbuilding School) with the high-end technology (Sail Loft), in a single space under a monocoque concrete shell structure and around a unique atrium. This dialogue is reflected in architectural space, in tectonics and in relation with the existing ruin building.

ABSTRACT
F
rom the dawn of the digital network revolution until today, Architecture has entered a transition process. It seems that gradually, the conditions towards the rise of a new paradigm for design mature; ‘Design 2.0’ will be based on less static, more dynamic methods and rules, in order to connect with the ever-changing needs of the built environment and its users. In an effort to trace the direction of these changes, our ‘vehicle’ is the dynamics of music; music with elements of dialogue, improvisation, action and generative interactions. The theories that are ‘networked’ to support

‘Design 2.0’ come from a wide range of knowledge fields; systems logic, cybernetics, mathematics, biomimetics, artificial intelligence and chemistry. We shift from designing objects, to designing relations between parts within the framework of systems, not necessarily architectural. Through the scope of these approaches, the role of the Architect, the essence of creativity and the relation of Architecture with time is redefined. Quo Vadis?

he main aspiration of the workshop was to introduce participants into contemporary discussions of formal exploration in Architecture and Art, through technical attainment of design and production. My goal in this project was to explore innovative, potential architectural expressions of the current discourse around form through technique elaboration, material intelligence, formal logic efficiencies and precision assemblies as an ultimate condition of design. The first phase of the design was focused on research and inspirational strategies that were going to lead to the first approach of the geometrical exploration. These strategies were based on topological analysis of skin, surface and mass efficiencies. The geometries that first created started mutating and emerge different components of the same matrix. I started exploring different qualities of skins and mass and play with the idea of the “inside-out� which led me to an expression of a wireframe exterior. These skins inside their frames could now affect their neighbors and the whole structure can become an efficient hybrid system.

he Industrial Design Center is a proposal for a new iconic architectural object at the heart of the industrial area of Gazi, near Athens city center. A series of sites in the surrounding area linked to Piraeus Street, like theatres, exhibition halls, the School of Fine Arts and more, are ideal backround of such endeavor. The buildings innovative program has the potential to host exhibitions as well as creators-artists, in fully equipped laboratories around the field of industrial design. The 2.770 sq. meters of the lot includes the following spaces: reception, administration, cafeteria, exhibition halls A and B, laboratories, amphitheater. The program is structured around a grid and below six disparate corrugated strips represanting

the different uses. The emerged strips conversing with the topology and topography of the urban fabric enhance the connection to the central square of the area while keeping the scale along Piraeus Street. The flowing space created internally is organized into sections according to specific uses, while the floor plan can change and adapt to diverse needs.

he initial triangular unit, created by the process of subtraction, when repeated generates multiple combinations which provide the space for diverse architectural functions. This is accomplished by rotating each solid either 60 or 120 degrees in the axis X, or 180 degrees at the axis Z, respectively. The combined units are integrated in space according to urban characteristics and qualities of the surrounding landscape, due to the complexity of their composition. The units can be arranged in several ways, extending in length

and in height when combined in two levels. This way socialization and communication is enhanced between different users and the need for relaxation is facilitated. A molded construction (preferably concrete) which is not only functional, but can also withstand harsh weather conditions.

he proposal is based on the concept of transparency and semi-permeability, both in functional organization, and materiality of the building. Our aim was to create organic links with both the city and its inhabitants, and the interior of the building. This gesture is actually a way to rethink the threshold of a public building and the city, relying on visual contact and human movement. The building attempts to connect to the existing urban environment, but also to highlight the presence of the existing town hall, acting as a homogenous, neutral background. ​ The building volumes create are cantilevered in order to signify the entrance and the auditorium, while additional deformations on the floors , create semi-open outdoor spaces and terraces, which are planted and help sustain a cooling microclimate.

The three uneven parts of this straight line, when assembled creating obtuse angles, emerge from the ground constructing a prismatic form. The resulting solid, characterized by its complex geometric design, is a firm “gesture” in space. In the cavity a wooden surface where the pedestrians can seat, lie down, or just relax, is placed, as well as a prismatic area for planting purposes. The decisions for the materials used were taken in consideration of low manufacturing costs, of the parts’ mass production and of easy transport and assembly possibilities (smart design).

his Architectural Competition is the second one I participated, together with two more members, with equal roles in the design process and the desicions made. This was during my studies at the NTUA School of Architecture. The lot #686 that hosts the existing cultural center of Eptagonia is today characterized by a sharp elevation of about five meters with the new lot, #677. The stone wall that surrounds it, retains only a portion of the slope at the base of the hill, and stresses the strict demarcation between the two properties. As a symbolic gesture, the perimeter wall was broken down into smaller fragments or “debris” which slide within the surrounding space. The fragments now become stone walls and yards - a reference to traditional stone walls - while holding the

soil and organizing the whole park area. The individual volumes of the museum follow the gentle slope of the existing terrain, creating an “organic” connection to the landscape. Finally, the programmatic areas of the museum appear as independent fragments that make up a larger whole. Their volumes are unfolded into surfaces that embrace and hold the program. This gesture also created interior spaces that are protected from the intense summer sun , while having gradual, smooth transitions and circulation among them.
